What feature did you like best? Do you think they're overengineered? Let us know in the comments and give the video a like to see more overengineered stationery!
Also, I think the lead window is actually not the silliest but most practical feature of all! The others may be hit or miss but knowing when you're about to run out of lead is priceless IMO.
@jetpens I have a Pilot Dr Grip multi pen with the .5 mechanical pencil. I have started using .38 ink refills that I LOVE. Is there a way to change the mechanical pencil portion to be able to use. 38 lead?
Almost makes me wish somebody would start a Japanese style stationary store at the nearby mall. The quality of stuff they get seems rather nice, and you normally don't see all the various options with what's normally available in U.S. stores.
As a former kid who used to carry like 6 mechanical pencils around at all times (in school) because I never knew how much lead was left in them, the pencil with a lead warning made me gasp haha! 😅
All you need to do is to hold the pencil horizontally to shake it and feel/hear the lead inside, and keep a pack of lead in the pencil case at all times... Backup mechanical pencil is more to do with if a pencil got stuck and no time to fix...
Yess! I did too! I'm still in high school and my pencil case has all kinds of pencils, mechanical (5 that are 0.5mm and one that's 0.7) and non mechanical, from HB all the way up to 8B😅😅
The nicolo would be perfect if it was 0.5 and 0.7 leads (for drawing) because most colored leads are 0.7 and you could switch between graphite 0.5 and colored 0.7
I’m not an artist but I bought the Nicolo thinking that I would be really cool to have different weight, but the pencil itself is very light and rattley which makes it difficult to maintain a consistent dark line. I ended up buying a darker lead grade to make up for lack of weight
While I guess it's _possible_ for pencils to be overengineered, I can appreciate all the features here (even though several of them may not be things I need). But I'm *so glad* to know about the Uni Alpha Gel Switch!!! I'd liked the idea of the auto-rotating lead in a pencil, but I hadn't bought one because I thought, "There's times I LIKE having the lead stay a certain way." Being able to turn that feature on and off is amazing - I'll be getting one of those!!
Is it weird that I found every pencil in this video really cool? And I just tried out my very first Blackwing wooden pencil. Is there a "Stationery Anonymous" group therapy for this? 😁
I LOVE overly-engineered pencils, but I will never get a shaker. The benefit seems to be not having to move your pencil hand position to extend the lead (which honestly I kinda hate) but I usually just use my other hand to click the lead forward if I don't want to move it. Also bringing my hands together reminds me to stretch out my arms and/or hands when I've been writing awhile.
if you like a standard pencil feel but slightly heavier for cheap the zebra tec2ways exist it has a shaker lock much like the monograph but is a separate mechanism or kinda like a decocker for the shaker weight so you can adjust your pencil weight if you want it to be tip heavy or clip heavy I absolutely adore the mujified version of it when they were being offered
While I absolutely don't mind having separate pencils for different situations, I can see how some of these would really help with saving space on the go or something But also my hands are constantly burning, I need that pencil xD
I have one of pencils from last video. Got to love those Japanese engineers! They must love a good pencil as much as I do. My original Pentel black plastic standard lasted for nearly 15 years! Now that’s fine work but I do love my new 0.2 mm that I don’t advance the lead
I recently bought the Uni Alpha Gel Switch Mechanical Pencil, the comfort, handling, quality is absolutely amazing! I'm going to go replace all my stuff with Japanese tools.
i'm actually not too surprised by these features. japanese people use pencils a lot. some professions requires them to use pencils for hours. and these features would really help in each of those specific professions.
Man! I don't know what it is. I have terrible hand-writing and for the last five decades have overwhelmingly used a typewriter, word processor, or computer but I just can't resist pen and pencil videos.
So happy to know that I’m not crazy 😃 bc I have gone through countless writing tools to find what suits me best! Plus, as I gain more life experience, my grip choices have changed as well. Thank you for providing detailed information to help me find what works best for me so I can donate those that don’t.
The problem I have is the 0.7 has been forgotten or at least have been ignored. It's the goldilocks between 0.5 and 0.9 but don't have the selection as the 0.5 does.
I don’t have the shaker pencil but I have a 0.3 lead uni kuru toga, the lead can’t be too extended or it breaks, so I have to stop and get more lead really often. I see the shaker pencil being really useful for this :)
Zebra has a really cool looking shaker pencil. They have sorta chunky bodies and have a nice rubber-ish grip throughout most of the barrel. If you don't want to use the shaker part, you can simply advance the lead. It's also a nice and weighty pencil
I think the Japanese are a cut above the rest when it comes to stationery. They think of everything! Even something that would never occur to you. And then when you discover that thing they did, you're like "where has this been all my life?" Looooove!
I went through junior high and high school using the simple Bic Mechanical pencils. I'd use a separate eraser so I could easily remove the eraser in the pencil and refill them. Nothing spectacular by any means, but they were cheap and worked just fine, if I lost one or wore one out, I simple grabbed another from my bag. I hated using regular wood pencils because of having to sharpen them usually after braking the lead from being in my bag being jostled around from classroom to classroom. I still don't have any fancy mechanical pencils, I still use those cheap Bic Mechanical pencils.
the zebra sarasa multi clip was great for taking notes in college. loved having the chunky body + pen/pencil switch option, and refill options were super nice :~)
I found similar (and cheaper) mechanical pencil like Pilot S30 mechanical pencil if you want automatic lead advancement and not into drafting pencil, it is Faber Castell Grip Matic; and as I know, it's come only with 0,5mm lead size only. The price is very affordable for all user (under US$5) and the availability should be available everywhere (as Faber Castell is available globally). I'm from Indonesia and it's available everywhere, in a pack that come with a bonus 0,5mm lead refill & eraser. The pencil construction is from plastic, but it's quite durable. The tip pipe had a soft spring, so a little bit push on the tip will extend the lead a little bit. Unfortunately the pipe cannot retract back so it will stay extended outside, but again, i love how the tip help the lead extending automatically. The cons is: 1. it had a little bit rattling sound, and it's quite vibrate on grippy textured paper, but it's very smooth and quite nice on smooth paper. 2. the grip is not as comfy, as it's made from hard plastic rubber. so if you a strong gripper, you should add additional grip rubber with more cushioning (I see some of those sold online). 3. The tip pipe is help protecting the lead, but not so much. If you press down too hard or drop the pencil, the lead still had a chance breaking (usually in the between the clutch & the tip pipes), but still it is way better than Pentel Caplet (that pencil is lead breaker on my hand TwT).
I want the the wood one, but I say every mechanical pens need the break prevention one. That’s a common problem I have when writing. It is super annoying that I stop writing using .5mm and always go .7mm to lower the rate of breakage.
I am looking forward to our family trip in March. Along with seeing the typical tourist attractions, I want to go to a stationary store and just wander and look.
I've used mechanical pencils for years and every time i shop for one i ALWAYS try to find perfection but i usually end up with something that would disappoint me in the long run. that is until i found the zebra delguard, its honestly too good
Used a zebra delguard and a kuru toga advance but I have a tight grip (i broke the kuru toga). Love my new alpha gel switch!! It's the perfect pencil for me as it combines the kuru toga mechanism with the super cushy grip. Now if they just made the alpha gel with the same tip type as the Uni Jetstream edge, I would be in heaven.
@@redemissarium I think it depends on how you hold the pencil. I broke leads with the delguard when I had the lead extended too far and it broke at the angle I held the pencil. The delguard is not a guarantee. I have to remember to hold my pencil more vertically. The kuru toga is more for keeping the lead sharp as opposed to protecting it from breaking. I think it just depends on what you want from your pencil.
i was scrolling through youtube when i saw this video had a mechanical pencil the exact same as my favourite mechanical pencil on the thumbnail ! turns out my favourite is called the pilot mogular mechanical pencil , i really like it because the pencil makes it feel so nice when writing or drawing , also i never knew that you can shake it to increase the length of the lead ! def learned something useful !!
I have had an S30 for over a year and a half. The wood is delicate on the top section. I also find the lead advance is not that consistent. It's an amazing device though.
The ottor 3 pencil has a bit of over engineering as well you flip it onto its side you see three different sizes 0.7 0.5 and also 0.3 hold the pencil vertical on that side so you can see the number then press the button for lead then there is another button to reboot the lead and choose a different one
It's not overengineering if it fulfills a practical purpose effectively. You can call it fancy, luxury functions, but they're not overengineered. To explain it in a way that you might understand, think of overengineering the same as writers who write 2 full pages to describe just the texture on the wall just to set the scene when the exact same result can be accomplished in 2 simple sentences. It's superfluous.
"This is the... I don't know if it even has a model name. The brand is... uh... no idea. But it has the address of the local gas station on it. If you press the top, the lead comes out. It also has a tiny eraser, which barely works. I use it every day."
The lead advancement feature sounds nice, but not for $40, so to me it's not over engineered just over priced. The rotating switch pencil IS over done though.
now I need a pencil that pushes the eraser up because I've thrown away so many good pencils due to tiny eraser syndrome (I had to put the lead from the tip because I couldn't get the eraser out)
I don't even like pencils, but now I want all of these for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I usually use a .33¢ blue BIC pen... And on really special ocassions, a .99¢ black gel pen. 😏
Probably the only feature I'd _actually_ pursue is the thing dealing with sweaty hands but then again, my current *_Porsche Design_*_ Tec Flex_ Series ( Mechanical or Ballpoint ) Pens already deal with this via their woven stainless-steel mesh also providing an unmatched comfortable grip 🤔 Just not in a price sensitive way 😉
I want a auto lead advance system with kuru toga always sharp to write and lead protection mechanism in one mechanical pencil that’s what I want. Oh additional too maybe lead sizes too so I can switch lead through multiple lead sizes.
Just got the Mogulair today at my school’s bookshop here in Singapore. Got it pre-filled with 2 piece of lead for 3 SGD, 2.17 USD. Quite a steal if you would ask me. Definitely the best contender for my Pilot Rexgrip replacement!
What feature did you like best? Do you think they're overengineered? Let us know in the comments and give the video a like to see more overengineered stationery!
I personally think it's just a matter of opinion. Some may find them over engineered, others may not. Again, just a matter of opinion. :)
Also, I think the lead window is actually not the silliest but most practical feature of all! The others may be hit or miss but knowing when you're about to run out of lead is priceless IMO.
Over engineered? No. Specific need identified and met, yes! I loved them all!!
@jetpens I have a Pilot Dr Grip multi pen with the .5 mechanical pencil. I have started using .38 ink refills that I LOVE. Is there a way to change the mechanical pencil portion to be able to use. 38 lead?
I would love the .38 and .5 pencil!! And I'd love the Uni Kuru Toga switch. I do love a smooth edge for drawing.

Does Daiso count?
@Unknown Person yeah ig but there aren't daisos in every us state
there’s a store in sf japan town that i always go to. they have everything
As a former kid who used to carry like 6 mechanical pencils around at all times (in school) because I never knew how much lead was left in them, the pencil with a lead warning made me gasp haha! 😅
i feel you!! there was always this anxiety haha. get this pencil!
why not just bring those lead refill container? they are more compact
All you need to do is to hold the pencil horizontally to shake it and feel/hear the lead inside, and keep a pack of lead in the pencil case at all times...
Backup mechanical pencil is more to do with if a pencil got stuck and no time to fix...

The nicolo would be perfect if it was 0.5 and 0.7 leads (for drawing) because most colored leads are 0.7 and you could switch between graphite 0.5 and colored 0.7
Or for drafting, switching between two different line weights (say, .7 and .3 mm) would be useful
That's a really good idea!
THIS!!! And mostly at stores like target (at least for mine) there are only lead refills for 0.7 pencils

Rotation lead and lead protection should both be in every pencil! Squishy grip is a bonus

Lmao
I wish there was one master mechanical pencil with all of those tools in it
agreeing with the guy above me, it makes sense. I feel as if a mechanical pencil with all of them would be too bulky and uncomfortable
It would not last long, as it tries to be everything.
One mechanical pencil to rule them all

Why do I love watching videos about mechanical pencils..? 😭
It's like I'm obsessed or something-
But hey, great vid :) I enjoyed it very much
Of course we think they are ridiculously overengineered. Thats why we love them so much
I need them all
The problem I have is the 0.7 has been forgotten or at least have been ignored. It's the goldilocks between 0.5 and 0.9 but don't have the selection as the 0.5 does.

Because they actually use it, their degree of computerization is still lower than most countries. That explains a lot.

1:54 I like the the way these pencil designs really think about the little ways to make things more convenient, like the airblanc for sweaty palms.
Rotating lead is a sketch artist pencil. Your lead always stays evenly sharp, without a chisel point !
OHTO multifunction guide is a great idea for me and my family & friends
Been using Dr. Grip for the longest time now. Love it!

Again, we need a pencil with all of these
The automatic lead advancement is so cool!
If I used a pencil (which I dont) the Pilot S30 sounds interesting. Never have to extend a lead? I might just like using a pencil.

Nothing is over engineered in Japanese products. They do it just right.
I wish I had these in school
I print a great deal so the rotating feature works very well for me - I guess if I needed to turn it off there is now an answer.
"This next feature, might just be the silliest on this list"
*Proceeds to list the single most useful feature on the list*
The lead advancement feature sounds nice, but not for $40, so to me it's not over engineered just over priced. The rotating switch pencil IS over done though.
Don't knock it till you try it. :) it's surprisingly nice.
I mean it's made of burch, you're paying for the novelty not practicality
