  • In this video we show you one solution to white smoke coming from the exhaust on cold start of your engine in the morning. If you have white smoke coming out of exhaust pipe when you first start the engine in the morning, there are several possible solutions. But on this Mercedes C250 with the W204 engine, we have a pretty good idea of the root cause. If you have white smoke coming from engine, that could be a different failure mode than white smoke coming from tailpipe, so you need to be more specific about where the white smoke is coming from. You don't want to just say it is white smoke coming from car. This fix only covers white smoke coming from the exhaust tailpipe.
    ✅ Parts/Tools in this Engine Blows White Smoke Repair:
    ✅ Dewalt DWST11556 Express Folding Workbench: amzn.to/2EZuyNj

    Smoke from tailpipe on startup problem solved

      Good day,
      I'm Sbu from South Africa.
      Would this be applicable to BMW 2012/08 F30 N20 engine, has twin turbo.
      Has white smoke on startup, but pretty huge/enormous white smoke on startup, but afterwards smoke disappears.
      Is it the same diagnosis?

      We have heard from other car owners of different companies that this problem exists on many car, so you might expect this to be the problem with yours as well. You should look on a few BMW forums from other owners to see if that is what solved it for them as well. This problem was solved by us checking on a Mercedes forum, and got recommendations from a mechanic at Mercedes on the forum. If you search Amazon and eBay for Banjo bolts, you will see them selling these bolts for many car brands, and apparently these newer bolt designs with the back flow preventers in them seems to be a common fix for this common problem.

    Thanks for this video. My C-250 was also blowing white smoke at startup. I used the parts link, and everything arrived within four days. The whole repair took under 30 minutes. I opted to install the O ring. After completion I ran the car for a few minutes to blow out and residual oil. Fired it up this morning, with no white smoke. Very good video, so thanks for the quality of your video images. I replaced the banjo bolt without any issues but the two supposedly OEM copper crush washers ($15 each through Parts Geeks -Yikes!) for sealing to the top of the housing I received as an "OEM Part # ending in 6513 are indeed too large and should have an ID of 10mm, not the 13mm size. Otherwise the washers won't seal the housing to banjo bolt properly. I just reused the old washer from the defective original banjo bolt and hopefully there will be no leaks using it; I have heard some people, including here, have just used one correct-size washer, Teflon tape, and no washer at all and have had success. Those 13mm washers, along with the rubber o-ring, appear to be used with the oil line itself and not the banjo bolt. That bargain FCP Euro kit mentioned from another viewer here also has just one washer and the rubber o-ring. There's a lot of confusion out there about all of this and Mercedes should make these issues clear! So there are actually two separate issues to deal with - 1, the easy banjo bolt replacement causing the start-up white smoke and 2, oil leakage leakage coming from the oil feed line above the turbo due to a deteriorated rubber o-ring at the block housing. The latter is a lot more difficult to deal with due to clearances and tolerances to remove/replace either the entire oil line or just the rubber gasket. One last thing - removing the lower rear heat shield 10 torx bolt requires that you remove the two bolts housing the dipstick feed tube so you can pull it out of the way to get enough clearance to get a socket in there to remove it completely should you need to remove the oil line itself. Hope this helps future "do it yourselfers".

      Yes, I've seen other yt videos on how to replace the banjo bolt. They used 2 crushed washers, one on top and the other at the bottom of the banjo bolt. The rubber O-ring goes to the end of the oil feed line towards the engine block.

    • @NiloComo
      @NiloComo 6 місяців тому

      I'm doing mine this weekend. Another yt video shows the original banjo bolt has only 1 washer size m10 and the rubber O-ring goes to the end of the oil pipe towards the engine block. The TSB requires removing the turbo heat shield and not the exhaust manifold heat shield.

    a single puff of smoke from the tail pipe thats only there upon first startup is also a leaking nozzle/fuel injector because when you shut it off at night it drips all through the night into the cylinder untill the fuel rail pressure subsides, and makes a pool of gas on the piston top that turns into that puff of smoke when you start it up the next day

      There's really no way to tell without seeing it in action, but if the engine oil is dripping off of where the turbo bolt plugs in, then it is likely that it needs this fix here in order to seal that leak. If not there is likely other spots where your turbo can leak. We had a $900 repair about a year later than this for other gaskets that leaked around the turbo that needed to be replaced.

    I see you said you need two “washers” but you only demonstrated using one “washer” and one o-ring, where does the other “washer” go? Also do you put the o-ring on the housing location first, then screw the bolt onto it along with the “washer”? Thanks.

    • @carbuying
      @carbuying  4 роки тому +1

      It can be a bit of a head scratcher. The way banjo bolts work is there is supposed to be a washer on the bottom side of the banjo and on the top side of the banjo, where the banjo bolt tightens down on top of the banjo. The Mercedes TSB called for a washer and a gasket, although we have seen forum posts where service techs say you need 2 washers. But upon removing the old banjo bolt, we only saw one washer, it was on the old banjo bolt, but no second washer under the banjo fitting. So is the second washer needed or is the gasket needed? We chose to install the gasket, and likely either scenario would work. The real issue here is changing to that new banjo bolt with the flow restrictor. As long as you have a good seal, it likely doe snot matter whether you have the second washer, or the O-ring. We also don't know why Mercedes said to use an O-ring when you normally have 2 washers for the banjo fitting. At least the fix works as we implemented it.

    • @aidensmith6461
      @aidensmith6461 4 роки тому +1

      carbuyingtipscom where does the o ring go? On the bottom of the banjo or top of the banjo in between the bolt and the washer? I put the o ring on the bottom of the banjo. Then put the washer on the bolt and screwed the bolt on with the o ring being on the bottom of the banjo. Or should I have screwed the bolt with washer onto the banjo with the o ring being on top of the banjo? Does it matter?

    • @carbuying
      @carbuying  4 роки тому +1

      @@aidensmith6461 There's still some confusion about this. Usually on banjos with most cars, there is supposed to be a metal washer on either side of the banjo, and the service adviser at our local Mercedes dealer confirmed this with the E350. At the time we ordered all these parts, we saw from other owners that the parts purchased as part of their dealership repair included the O-ring, but no one knew where it goes, we've searched all the Mercedes forums, and no one has a clue. In this video we placed it at the bottom side of the banjo where it made the most sense, and there has been no leak at the banjo. I would suggest you try one metal washer on either side of the banjo, and hang onto the O-ring. If you see any leaks at the banjo, you can place the O-ring there, but we suspect you'll be just fine with a washer on the top and the bottom of the banjo. Look at parts stores online selling banjo bolts, you'll see their banjo bolt kits usually come with the 2 washers. Because of the nature of the repair and often times critical nature to Mercedes specs, we made sure we bought Mercedes only Banjo parts, but they are all sold separately. If we could ever get our hands on the TSB it might shed exact light on what to do with the O-Ring.

    • @aidensmith6461

      carbuyingtipscom yeah that’s what I ended up doing, put the o ring on the bottom and screwed the Bolt on with a washer on the bolt. Torqued it too much at first Bc I didn’t recognize the “click” then loosened but didn’t take th bolt off.. tightened it to 6nm once I figured out the “click” I still see smoke coming from the exhaust two days later after the bolt replacement. But don’t see any leaks with the banjo bolt. So I’ll give it some time. Thanks so much for replying!

      I already checked the harmonic balancer runout mine was doing around 1.5 mm runout. according to the data from WIS the runout supposed to be 0.3mm, no check engine light but there is a fault of torque calculation error, this is due to the loss of power. Harmonic balancer wobble makes it hard for ecm to compensate for torque lost. I have to get replaced asap

    • @wailmaghazi854
      @wailmaghazi854 3 роки тому

      Having a m271 evo engine you have to keep an eye for oil leaks from oil cooler and gaskets, banjo bolt as well as intake gaskets, and also one of the common failures are high pressure fuel pump and esl lock, harmonic balancer is also a common failure for this engine after a 6 or 7 years you should get it checked out before it destroys the front engine main seal and main bearings.

    Have 2010 C180. Have the smoke from exhaust at startup. Had mechanic look at it, told him about the banjo bolt as I was doing research and came across this video and his inside mechanic at a Merc dealer feels it's the banjo and least expensive repair to offer a possible solution. Initially mechanic thought it was valve stem seal repair (ouch!) Question is I'm in the UK and wonder if same solution here. It's a w204 so hope its the same...

      This is for a modification to the banjo bolt for the turbo. IF you have oil on the line you may have leak, which is not the same as the leak from this repair, which would be oil dripping inside, not outside on the lines.

      We have no way of knowing that you will have to either go to the BMW forums and ask there which is where we usually find information on our vehicles from Mercedes in Lexus for example in those forums. You could also Google online for repairs on your particular vehicle model and see if there's videos on UA-cam for replacing the banjo boat or just Google the banjo bolt for your car and see what model numbers come up. Also you can find out the model number from your local BMW dealer and then search online to see if anybody has a cheaper kit.

The last mechanic I went to found an engine, charged me 2.5k euros for the engine and work replacing, kept my old engine, and a few months later, same problem.
