I get asked a lot of questions about cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil-mostly about using one as a substitute for another in a recipe. Here's how they're different any why they don't make great swaps for one another!
Cocoa butter
amzn.to/29vA4aW
Shea butter
amzn.to/1U1baOB
Virgin coconut oil
amzn.to/29xxlNo
And if you want to swap, these are pretty good ideas:
Cocoa butter for kokum butter
Shea butter for mango butter
Coconut oil for babassu oil

I use Cocoa on my face, Shea on my body, and Coconut in my Oatmeal breakfast mix.
Mixing fat and carbs together is dangerous for your health because of the Randle Cycle
I use all...coconut oil on my skin and hair...you just have to know how to use it
I really appreciate the quality of your videos, like all the natural organic type things i search for you seem to have videos on.
Thanks, Olivia! Be sure to check out my blog as well, I've been blogging for much longer than I've been making videos (5+ years), so there's TONS of content over at humblebeeandme.com/ :)

These three are so different I wouldn’t swap any of them for the other. Thanks for including your swaps because mango and shea do mimic each other and it’s good to know kokkum is like cocoa. Thanks!
Very informative. Thank you from someone who needed this information
Enjoy and happy making!
this is so helpful, I have made so many mistakes before. Thx!

I absolutely love when my hair products contain these 3.
Yes
Hi everyone, besides the consistency, l learnt that cocoa butter has a longer shelf life than Shea and mango butters. Hence cocoa butter seems to be the best option when making lotion bars!
I dont comment often but i had to say I really liked your video. This is how people should make a video! it sticks to the point, does not have extra drama, and all aspects of comparisons and scenarios were covered. excellent job!
Thank you so much! :)

Thanks Marie!! I'm just really loving your youtube videos!! You have the sweetest lovely personality!! 😆❤❤❤
Thanks, Susan! :D
Thank you. I was wondering if the coconut oil could replace shea butter in my lotions. My current carrying oil is coconut so I’m going to try the coconut oil today in one batch. My first batch used neither and the lotion was smooth and nicely spreadable. All this stuff is quite a learning curve for an old man, but it’s a great hobby. Your videos are really helping. Keep up the good work.

YESSS!!! GIRL!! I love how technical you are...some of these DIY videos can get on my nerves because sometimes people can't describe scientifically why they use an ingredient, or do what they do. I LOVE THE WATERFALL OF INFORMATION

Shea butter is the least problematic for my facial skin, personally. Coconut oil breaks me out. Haven’t tried cocoa butter though.
Personally I'm not much of a butters-on-the-face person; I prefer something lighter, like a liquid oil or emulsified lotion. Your experience with coconut oil is pretty common, though! I'm not sure why so many people laud it as an amazing moisturizer... it's thin, greasy, and breaks a lot of people out 🤷🏻♀️
COCOA OR SHEA BUTTER DARKENS ME SO FAST U WOULD WONDER IF I WAS EVER ON THE BRIGHT SIDE.
@Millicent Ihedioha, as opposed to the dark side?
@@lynnwilhoite6194 MA DEAR COCONUT OIL IS THE BEST THINGY DAT EVER HAPPENED TO MA FACE, OVERALL SKIN AND EVEN TEETH N ORAL HEALTH. ESPECIALLY THE COLD PRESSED COCONUTOIL ITS A WONDERMENT AND I CANNOOOOT LIVE WITHOUT IT...SKIN DEFERS OKAY! WHAT ROCKS MA BOAT MAY SINK YOURS SO EXPERIMENT N STICK TO WHAT WORKS BEST FOR U..CIAO
Humblebee & Me i have read that refined and filtered coconut oil is the problem but if you use it just raw and unfiltered the skin loves it, i use the Trader Joe’s raw unfiltered and it’s lovely and a good natural spf and antibacterial. Thoughts? I also love shea butter around eyes-i apply both verrrry lightly for night hydration but my go to moisturizer is avocado and/or rosehip oil.
Rarely do I come across a channel with this much indepth and hands on explanations, and not only is the content pure quality, so is the presentation. Absolutely well done. You have earned a lifelong sub.
Thanks so much, Christopher!

The problem with coconut oil is that it is comedogenic (it clogs pores), so it is especially bad for acne or oily skin.
I'd recommend giving this a read: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/will-this-clog-pores/ :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe I went to read it and its gone 😩😭
I use coconut oil on my face and don’t have issues with acne, so I feel like it’s different for everyone.

Thank you for your explanation of these different types of butters and what butter is best to substitute. This is very helpful!
I'm so glad you found it useful- happy making!

marvelously explained
Thanks! :)
This helped me have a better understanding for what to tell customers at work of how to apply it and the results of why is comes out different if you don't use a certain one that you thought you could substitute it with. Thank you.
Woot! Thanks for watching :)
You're my go-to person when it comes to DIY.
You don't go essential oils are the one stop solution to all live's problem like some do but keep it scientific, practical and explain the rationale.
Thank you so much!
I recently discovered your channel. Loving all of your videos so much. Thanks for making them!
Fascinating... so much easier to understand on video! I have been guilty of swapping cocoa and shea butters and have had no problems, so I've been lucky. It would be great to have the names of the the swapping oils written out on this video too.
Thanks, Kathy! There's so much to be said for seeing instead of reading, I'm goad this video helped :) Everything is written out in the description box below!

Great video!
Many thanks for sharing
All Good Medicine!
Only just seen this great advice great video, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
The Shea butter can indeed be a great alternative for cocoa butter and vice versa, yes they are very different in texture but their healing properties and benefits for the skin are very similar, the only major difference is that cocoa butter smells like chocolate while Shea butter has more of a nutty scent. I do agree though that you can't swap coconut oil for the butters as they are very different but you can use any other oil to replace the coconut oil, not just babassu, you can use olive, sweet almond, grapeseed, jojoba it doesn't matter as long as you're using a moisturizing oil. So I say just use whatever you have on hand people. If a recipe calls for cocoa butter, but all you have is Shea butter then just use that, the benefits are more or less the same anyway, when you melt them they are both the same liquid oil.
Shea butter is non-comedogenic whereas cocoa butter has a greater propensity for acne.
I wish you would have talked about the difference in health benefits for each
can I use shea butter for my face

I plan on mixing all of these to make a beard balm, on the hopes of a soft and natural look
Happy formulating!
Thanks for this video i understood everything g i need
great video, loved the demos and the bonus info on what *can be substituted.
Thanks, Samantha! Happy making :)
Thank you for that info
Thanks for watching!
Which should I use, Palmer's cocoa butter lotion or Palmer's coconut oil lotion?
Thanks for the info! I'm in the early stages of creating my own beard balm business. So I'm researching different oils and butters to use in my products. I learned some things in your video, but I have a suggestion to make it more educational. Maybe provide some finer details about each ingredient. Like specific benefits of one butter over the other. Say one has more vitamins or whatever the case may be. That sort of information is extremely valuable as well! Thank you! Have a great day!
Hi! I think you will love the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) :) Happy making!
I wrote a book called Natural Oils & Butters: A Color Encyclopedia with full monographs, fatty acid profiles, uses, chemistry on 172 natural oils.480 pages, full color. Not trying to promote per se but people like you are the very reason I spent 8 years collecting data and 2 full years of writing after I retired as a Registered Nurse. If you go to Amazon and look up that title, I think there is a 'look inside' feature. It is spendy at $49.95 but that is the retail the publisher recommended based on the size of the book, color illustrations (which I did myself after spending years learning photoshop). Good luck on your business. PS. There is NO BOOK on the market that has 172 oils and butters outlined.
Great info... but can u add difference in terms of vitamins n absorption n clogging pores... according to u coconut is smooth n thin but it doesnt hydrate my skin n additionally promotes breakouts... while i know for a lot of ppl shea buter gets aborbed n is anti inflammatory
COCONUT DOESNT GIVE EVERYONE BREAKOUT O, I CANT DO WITHOUT IT. IT KEEPS MY FACE N BODY SMOOTH,YOUNGER, GLOW,FIRM,BRIGHTENS A LIL. COLD PRESSED IS BEST, LEST I FORGET MY NATURAL HAIR LOVES COCONUT OIL FOR SHEEN,SOFTNESS N GROWTH.
There are too many factors. It all depends on where you live, how sensitive, thick, thin, porous your skin is, etc. Even how much water you drink and the foods you eat. Everyone’s skin is different. If coconut oil breaks you out, don’t use it. Shea butter does nothing for me, in fact, it breaks me out. My skin isn’t dry enough or thick enough for it. Coconut oil has worked wonders on my skin. Just plain old Unrefined, Extra Virgin, Organic Coconut Oil, not mixed with anything else.
I concur. Coconut oil gave me breakouts, so it's not for everyone.
@@channelmovedtoalluringplan1452 agreed everyone is different, I use shea butter on my face and no breakouts, and I live in tropical humid weather. Never tried coconut on my face but cocoa tends to break me out.
@@millicentihedioha4918 Coconut oil does not agree with everyone but it agrees with me.....you can mix coconut oil with other products rather than putting it direct on your skin
Thank you so much for good information, I have many doughts about cocoa butter and Shea butter before watching your video, now I can make my won lotions and others thank you
very helpful ,I was in confusion between cocoa and Shea butter ....now I will purchase cocoa butter as because my skin is combination type not extra dry ..Thanku 😘
Happy to help, and happy making!
Is it cold press coconut oil or vergin coconut oil.
What's different in both and what should be our priority according to application?
Marie would you consider doing a video on the making of cold process soap? I'm a melt and pour gale and want to learn how to make cold process but it looks so complicated with %, lye etc. hope fully you will consider it🙃

I don't normally comment but your channel (and website) are great! I probably haven't read far enough through everything you've got yet but I would like to know if it's okay to blend any of these butters to work with?
Thanks for watching! You can definitely blend any or all of these butters together :)
Thanks for the great video. I'm new to this and your video is helping me to sort things out.
Thanks for watching and happy making!
Marie thank you for your suggestion on me watching this video. Super helpful. I have one more question. How do I get my vanilla lip balms to smell and taste like vanilla? I tried vanilla extract and vanilla essential oil but nothing happens. Am I using the wrong kind or not putting enough. Thank you.
Try a vanilla flavour oil :) Both vanilla extract and essential oil are water soluble and will not work well in lip balms at all. Happy making!
can mango butter be substituted for shea butter?
can you make another video on mango butter compared to the other two butters pls :)
Probably not, but you can learn more about mango butter here: www.humblebeeandme.com/project/mango-butter/ 😊
@@HumblebeeAndMe thank u so much, and I love all your videos, but one more question, one of my friend felt diy lip product is not very sanitary, is that true? Because I love making lip balms

The problem with coconut oil is that I can't keep it solid where I live so it really isn't a good choice for anything I want to make unless I try to add beeswax to make it firmer. Plus like others have said it seems to cause skin issues for me, it just isn't a good match.
Love the hair :)
Thanks!
I feel like a mad scientist learning about all fo this! *muahahaha!! *
👩🏻🔬😄
I only use cocoa butter lotions(not unrefined) I love the smell and the firm none sticky texture is perfect for my skin. But i use coconut oil for my hair and beard.
Lovely! I cannot get enough of the smell of cocoa butter ❤️
So love your videos. New fan. I'm binging this weekend and learning
Thanks so much for watching!
Hello humble bee I have dry hair, fluffy and fir and sensitive skin .I mixed almond oil, coconut oil, shea butter and argan oil plus glycerin ,but left my hair mangled what do you advice to do? thank you
@Maysoun Beate thank you
What I am looking for specifically is if there is any conversion difference in substituting the shea for the coconut oil. I make my own THC infused massage oil using coconut oil but with the weather getting warmer, the oil really liquifies all summer. Wondering if I try to make with shea butter if the product will stay in a solid through the summer. TIA!!!!
There really isn't; that's a bit like asking if there is a conversion between cucumber and tomato. They're pretty fundamentally different ingredients, with different slip, skin feel, and melting point. Check out my massage butter formulations (www.humblebeeandme.com/search) for some solid ideas :) Happy making!
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Would you use BOTH Cocoa butter AND Shea butter for MAKING LIPSTICKS?
You certainly could, though I typically don't due to the likeliness that they will go grainy.
Love your recipes. Fo u have any face scrubs
Yes! Check out my blog, I have quite a few :)
Do anyone of these help to tighten skin?
I love all 3 in my skin care and hair routine... You can mix them with other products
They are lovely!
Can i use cocoa butter on my face?
What about in soap? Does shea butter vs. cocoa butter make 2 completely different bars of soap at 15%?
No-try sending some different recipes through SoapCalc and watch the values for hardness, lather, etc change :)
Please if i want to mix the three
Can you tell me how many presently
Can i put from each one
I just purchased PEG-50 Shea Butter. Never used it and can't wait to try it in a lotion! Have you tried it yet?
I do have some, but I think the only mentions you'll find of it on the blog are as substitution possibilities for things like Olivem 300 (Olive Oil PEG-7 Esters) :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe ok so I introduced PEG-50 Shea Butter and polysorbate 20 to my lotion formula and here are the results. It kept my lotion VERY fluid!! I mean it didn't even thicken at all!! It's been about 2 weeks or so and it is still fluid to the point that I can pour it out of the container. All I did was switch regular shea butter with the PEG-50 SB and added the polysorbate 20 at 1.5%. Both new ingredients went into the water phase.
I used cocoa butter and shea butter.. to make soap either way at the end of the day a soap is meant to clean not to moisturized.. we can use a lotion for that.
Agreed!
Good video I’m a bloke an new to all this stuff I’m on a healing journey frm in and out and I have ordered both 500gs of organic raw unrefined Ghana Shea nut butter and the same with the cacao/cocoa butter.
Ive fair irish skin and a bit to sometimes fair-dry skin !!
What would you recommend I try first
I currently just wash my face with warm water foam ok face wash. Then put witch hazel on me face then use either sweet almond or some days Aloe Vera Or both,I’d love your opinion which is best for dry skin on the face and body tks good video my Other half got me into this as before this I would only wash me face with warm water and slap a bit of big brand multi chemical toxic crap on my face an odd time!! So in my head I thought when I missed a day with my skin cleaning I would go really dry and be dependent on these for moisture (crazy I know)
So stripping everything back and use home blends or pure form ingredients but have never used either Shea or cocoa pure on there own so any advice be appreciated nice one 👍
Can I use juniper capsules with powder in it for making beauty lotion (adding preservatives)?
Stick to using cosmetic ingredients; if it's a cosmetic grade extract designed for use in skin care follow your supplier's usage recommendations :)
So, if a recipe calls for coco butter, is there anything that can be subbed? I have used it and it has an overpowering scent that EO's just can't cover.
Body butter for instance. I don't like smelling like a chocolate bar. Got the answer at the end. Thankyou!
I mixed all 3 in equal parts to make a beard butter and hair butter works grate
For skincare, does it matter if you use organic or non-organic?
That's a decision you'll need to make for yourself; I don't bother with organic, but many people do.
Very natural beauty!
You're wonderful!!

Why not just check out my blog? humblebeeandme.com. I also have several recipes in my book, Make it Up (www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/)
I was following another one of your videos where you made beard balm and loved the end results. I did read somewhere else though that cocoa butter can be used to make beard balm. Would you recommend it as a substitute to shea butter or used with shea butter?
Honestly, pretty much any oil or butter can be used to make a beard balm, so I wouldn't get too excited about cocoa butter-it's a great butter, but it's not a beard balm lynch pin. I'd recommend getting some, working with it, trying some things, and having fun. It's great with shea butter, it's great with other things, it's great on it's own. There aren't really any rules here! Also, I'm going to delete your other comment since it is identical to this one. There's no need to leave identical comments in multiple places, they just end up stacked on top of each other the big list of comments I see in the back end :)
Thanks for the fast reply and apologies for the same question in two places. The shea butter is working a treat. I checked out your website and signed up.
Awesome! Happy making :) I do try to be very good about replying to comments; blog comments are generally my top priority, and then UA-cam-so if you have a question, comment away!
Can I mix these 3 plus olive oil?...
Niece video.thank u
Thanks for watching!
do you have a recipe for a nice baby lotion? Is e wax safe for babies? thank you
The only thing I'd be concerned about for babies would be essential oils (don't use any), and ensuring you include a preservative since baby immune systems aren't great-we don't want to tax them with exposure to the sorts of things that can set up shop in an unpreserved lotion. The lotion in my basic lotion video would be a good place to start :) ua-cam.com/video/6KKR7D_KNt4/v-deo.html
hi ... I have loads of non emulsifying beeswax ... please let me know how to make a light weight body lotion as I'm in the tropics and have dry skin
You can't, I'm afraid. The thing that makes lotion light is the inclusion of water-and generally speaking, quite a lot of it if you want a really light product. It is impossible to make a lotion with an 80% water phase using beeswax-you must use a proper emulsifying wax. Sorry!
So if I wanted to formulate a shea and cocoa butter cream what percentages should I use for these two butters I don’t want it to melt in the summer months
If you live somewhere hot, those butters will melt no matter what % you use. I'd try an emulsified approach instead :) ua-cam.com/video/M4PDskyzXgk/v-deo.html
is there any way I can add something to make Shea butter remain soft permanently after bring whipped and packaged?
www.humblebeeandme.com/whipped-shea-citrus-body-butter/ :)
Where do you buy your coconut oil? .. i've been using it for couple years and it has never had a coconut smell.. i think i would enjoy it more if it did!
Brianna V.B. Try dr bronners coconut oil
Mine is from New Directions Aromatics-make sure whatever you're getting is virgin and it should smell lovely 😊
Yes yes yes
I wish you could add kokkum butter
What is the best for lotion bars?
It depends, really-that's sort of like asking what the best fruit for pie is :) I would usually choose cocoa butter, but they could all work depending on the rest of the formula. Happy making!
I use cocoa butter during the summer and coconut oil in the winter because during the summer cocoa butter melts better and it hardens on my skin in winter.
