    I get asked a lot of questions about cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil-mostly about using one as a substitute for another in a recipe. Here's how they're different any why they don't make great swaps for one another!
    Cocoa butter
    amzn.to/29vA4aW
    Shea butter
    amzn.to/1U1baOB
    Virgin coconut oil
    amzn.to/29xxlNo
    And if you want to swap, these are pretty good ideas:
    Cocoa butter for kokum butter
    Shea butter for mango butter
    Coconut oil for babassu oil

      Personally I'm not much of a butters-on-the-face person; I prefer something lighter, like a liquid oil or emulsified lotion. Your experience with coconut oil is pretty common, though! I'm not sure why so many people laud it as an amazing moisturizer... it's thin, greasy, and breaks a lot of people out 🤷🏻‍♀️

      Humblebee & Me i have read that refined and filtered coconut oil is the problem but if you use it just raw and unfiltered the skin loves it, i use the Trader Joe’s raw unfiltered and it’s lovely and a good natural spf and antibacterial. Thoughts? I also love shea butter around eyes-i apply both verrrry lightly for night hydration but my go to moisturizer is avocado and/or rosehip oil.

    The Shea butter can indeed be a great alternative for cocoa butter and vice versa, yes they are very different in texture but their healing properties and benefits for the skin are very similar, the only major difference is that cocoa butter smells like chocolate while Shea butter has more of a nutty scent. I do agree though that you can't swap coconut oil for the butters as they are very different but you can use any other oil to replace the coconut oil, not just babassu, you can use olive, sweet almond, grapeseed, jojoba it doesn't matter as long as you're using a moisturizing oil. So I say just use whatever you have on hand people. If a recipe calls for cocoa butter, but all you have is Shea butter then just use that, the benefits are more or less the same anyway, when you melt them they are both the same liquid oil.

Not trying to promote per se but people like you are the very reason I spent 8 years collecting data and 2 full years of writing after I retired as a Registered Nurse. If you go to Amazon and look up that title, I think there is a 'look inside' feature. It is spendy at $49.95 but that is the retail the publisher recommended based on the size of the book, color illustrations (which I did myself after spending years learning photoshop). Good luck on your business. PS. There is NO BOOK on the market that has 172 oils and butters outlined.

      There are too many factors. It all depends on where you live, how sensitive, thick, thin, porous your skin is, etc. Even how much water you drink and the foods you eat. Everyone’s skin is different. If coconut oil breaks you out, don’t use it. Shea butter does nothing for me, in fact, it breaks me out. My skin isn’t dry enough or thick enough for it. Coconut oil has worked wonders on my skin. Just plain old Unrefined, Extra Virgin, Organic Coconut Oil, not mixed with anything else.

    I only use cocoa butter lotions(not unrefined) I love the smell and the firm none sticky texture is perfect for my skin. But i use coconut oil for my hair and beard.

    What I am looking for specifically is if there is any conversion difference in substituting the shea for the coconut oil. I make my own THC infused massage oil using coconut oil but with the weather getting warmer, the oil really liquifies all summer. Wondering if I try to make with shea butter if the product will stay in a solid through the summer. TIA!!!!

      @HumblebeeAndMe  3 роки тому

      There really isn't; that's a bit like asking if there is a conversion between cucumber and tomato. They're pretty fundamentally different ingredients, with different slip, skin feel, and melting point. Check out my massage butter formulations (www.humblebeeandme.com/search) for some solid ideas :) Happy making!

      I do have some, but I think the only mentions you'll find of it on the blog are as substitution possibilities for things like Olivem 300 (Olive Oil PEG-7 Esters) :)

      @@HumblebeeAndMe ok so I introduced PEG-50 Shea Butter and polysorbate 20 to my lotion formula and here are the results. It kept my lotion VERY fluid!! I mean it didn't even thicken at all!! It's been about 2 weeks or so and it is still fluid to the point that I can pour it out of the container. All I did was switch regular shea butter with the PEG-50 SB and added the polysorbate 20 at 1.5%. Both new ingredients went into the water phase.

    Good video I’m a bloke an new to all this stuff I’m on a healing journey frm in and out and I have ordered both 500gs of organic raw unrefined Ghana Shea nut butter and the same with the cacao/cocoa butter.
    Ive fair irish skin and a bit to sometimes fair-dry skin !!
    What would you recommend I try first
    I currently just wash my face with warm water foam ok face wash. Then put witch hazel on me face then use either sweet almond or some days Aloe Vera Or both,I’d love your opinion which is best for dry skin on the face and body tks good video my Other half got me into this as before this I would only wash me face with warm water and slap a bit of big brand multi chemical toxic crap on my face an odd time!! So in my head I thought when I missed a day with my skin cleaning I would go really dry and be dependent on these for moisture (crazy I know)
    So stripping everything back and use home blends or pure form ingredients but have never used either Shea or cocoa pure on there own so any advice be appreciated nice one 👍

      Stick to using cosmetic ingredients; if it's a cosmetic grade extract designed for use in skin care follow your supplier's usage recommendations :)

    So, if a recipe calls for coco butter, is there anything that can be subbed? I have used it and it has an overpowering scent that EO's just can't cover.
    Body butter for instance. I don't like smelling like a chocolate bar. Got the answer at the end. Thankyou!

    I was following another one of your videos where you made beard balm and loved the end results. I did read somewhere else though that cocoa butter can be used to make beard balm. Would you recommend it as a substitute to shea butter or used with shea butter?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 років тому +1

      Honestly, pretty much any oil or butter can be used to make a beard balm, so I wouldn't get too excited about cocoa butter-it's a great butter, but it's not a beard balm lynch pin. I'd recommend getting some, working with it, trying some things, and having fun. It's great with shea butter, it's great with other things, it's great on it's own. There aren't really any rules here! Also, I'm going to delete your other comment since it is identical to this one. There's no need to leave identical comments in multiple places, they just end up stacked on top of each other the big list of comments I see in the back end :)

    do you have a recipe for a nice baby lotion? Is e wax safe for babies? thank you

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 років тому

      The only thing I'd be concerned about for babies would be essential oils (don't use any), and ensuring you include a preservative since baby immune systems aren't great-we don't want to tax them with exposure to the sorts of things that can set up shop in an unpreserved lotion. The lotion in my basic lotion video would be a good place to start :) ua-cam.com/video/6KKR7D_KNt4/v-deo.html

    hi ... I have loads of non emulsifying beeswax ... please let me know how to make a light weight body lotion as I'm in the tropics and have dry skin

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  5 років тому +1

      You can't, I'm afraid. The thing that makes lotion light is the inclusion of water-and generally speaking, quite a lot of it if you want a really light product. It is impossible to make a lotion with an 80% water phase using beeswax-you must use a proper emulsifying wax. Sorry!

    I use cocoa butter during the summer and coconut oil in the winter because during the summer cocoa butter melts better and it hardens on my skin in winter.
