- A high-achieving north London school, previously dubbed Britain’s strictest, is facing a High Court challenge from a Muslim pupil over a decision to impose a “prayer ban”.
The student, who cannot be named, alleges that the policy introduced by the Michaela Community School in Brent is discriminatory and had “fundamentally changed” how she feels “about being a Muslim in this country”, a judge heard.
The pupil described the ban as “like somebody saying they don’t feel like I properly belong here”, a hearing in London on Tuesday was told.
In the legal action against the free school’s governing body, the Michaela Community Schools Trust, the student claims the decision “banning prayer rituals” also breaches her right to freedom of religion.
TalkTV’s Julia Hartley-Brewer says that everyone has the right to practice their religion - but schools must be separate from religion.

@DavidGetling The School is in a Muslim area with Majority Muslim pupils (50%). 100s of other Schools with similar ethos, building sizes, demographics and pupils have Prayer rooms which are mainly used by Muslims. Some even get better results than this school. This Teacher is Guyanese, and Guyana have way more stricter school systems and all facilitate prayer rooms for Muslim students and she knows this. That is why there is no issue. How comes all other thousands of schools in UK and in this teacher's home country have no issues with prayer rooms or Muslims praying but this ONE has the problem. That is very telling 🤷🏿♂️

A slight detour from the thread.There was a London Bus,which was used as a booking office for the Hop on Hop off tourist tour.This was stationed outside the Charing Cross Station railway station.There is no longer this booking station and the souvenir shops around Trafalgar Square,had no idea where to book tickets.This booking catered for spur of the moment tours.I had to walk far and wide and I am wondering if it is the London Mayor who was responsible for the removal of the convenient booking office Red Bus.

My daughter went to this school and parents from ethnic backgrounds are desperate to get their kids in there, Muslim parents know it’s strict and they know the rules she doesn’t bend to anyone. But they still fight to get there kids in there. You cannot get your kids in then turn on the school to make it bend to your religious beliefs. This should not be allowed. They can practice their religion outside of school. They already work around Eid, these parents have to be flexible. they’re not, these parents use religion every time to bend everyone for them.

Islam doesn't work like that. Prayers are at specific times and if they are not prayed at those times it is considered a sin.
You say they already work around 'Eid' ... Well... you can request time off for Eid and other religious holidays which is fair. Christmas, Easter is just free to everyone.
It is UK law to allow people to practice their religion and I'm sorry to say that this school has broken laws and has discriminated. This is why school follow strict policies. Even Catholic schools provide prayer areas for all religions as it is part of the law and ethos.
Prayer takes 5 minutes and has many benefits.

My kids went to a catholic school, no other religion were allowed. Now the Muslims are attending catholic school and demanding their rights. Unbelievable. It’s always about them 🤷🏻♀️

Ummm so…why don’t they go to a Muslim school? My daughter went to a predominantly black and brown Primary school years ago. She learnt absolutely nothing, they were more interested in celebrating every festival religious event in the calendar. She was bullied for being white. Luckily we managed to get her into a Christian school where she flourished…and celebrated the nativity for the first time in two years. We are a Christian country, the sooner the minority get it, the sooner they can stop expecting everyone to abide by a minority, which are loosing sympathy by the treatment and over exploitation of the UK.

That's not how İslamic prayers work. In İslam you have to pray 5 times a day at specific times otherwise you are late, which is considered a sin.

Reading through a good number of the comments we discover there are a bevy of contributors gloating as to how great this headmistress happens to be. As well, there are also a number of contributors who have the wherewithal, and the courage to spell out the stark realities of the sociological catastrophe that, the open-door intakes of immigrants from non-European and, MOREOVER, non-Christian religions have brought to bear upon Britain.
I froze a scene of the students in the dining room, and of the 19 faces I observed NOT ONE OF THEM is a European - let alone a person of Anglo/Saxon/Celtic heritage. In one other aspect of that clip there were 2 blonde girls, and 5 coloureds. Quite clearly, native British students in this school are the ABSOLUTE minority.
But to think that, in 1975, the White proportion of England’s population, which was nearly 47 million, was 86 percent. But now, in 2024, with England’s population being in excess of 61.3 million, the White-native component has been reduced to 65 percent. Ostensibly, it’s safe to say that almost all of the 15 million+ plus increase in the country’s population is due to mass non-European immigration, and the ensuing children they’ve bred. Additionally, this has been compounded by virtue of native Britons migrating to other countries in what can only be described as White-Flight.
However, in big cities such as London and Birmingham, Whites are currently the slight minorities in this duo of cities. But in 11 of London’s 32 boroughs, non-whites range from being between 75-85 percent of their residents. Furthermore, there are another 6 broughs where non-whites will become the majority of the residents by 2027.
With specific respect to Islam, its most ardent believers are always subservient to Allah and the Quran. To indisputably ascertain how dangerous Islam is to western societies can be garnered by viewing the UA-cam clip titled:
‘Three Quran Verses Every Jew Needs To Know’
Therein, the presenter spells it out in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, exactly what is written in the Quran. In a nutshell, it is the duty of Muslims to either convert non-believers or to kill them.
Between 2004, with the Atocha bombings, and later in London, in July 2005, along with Bataclan and Niece, etc, etc, all the way up Sir David Amess in 2021, there were 32 terrorist attacks carried out by Islamic fundamentalists: culminating with the heinous slaughter of 530 innocent souls. Yet, there has NEVER BEEN ONE SINGLE OCCASION that any Muslim or Islamic group has unconditionally apologised for these crimes. Moreover, and, indeed, more abhorrent, NOR HAS THERE EVER BEEN one low-life treacherous politician or gutless church leader who has condemned these actions by these primitive fundamentalists.
Tragically, Britain, as it is certainly the case with the US, Canada, France and Australia, has had its culture totally destroyed by being swamped with immigrants from cultures/religions who can never be anything other than culturally-insular tribes.

I think this Head Teacher should be put in charge of the U.K. education system. Her results speak for themselves. I hope the courts support her on this issue. Plus I’m sick and tired of this bloody religion and it’s supporters coming to this country, taking root, then dictating how it should be run and governed. If you don’t like our laws, culture and freedoms, then please don’t come. You will not be missed.

I simply do not understand, when there are other Muslim countries worldwide they can go to, they believe that by coming to Britain their primitive ideology would be welcome by all. When in Rome, do as the Romans do....otherwise LEAVE. The problem our politicians and schools have encouraged by bending over backwards for this damned religion is that it has encouraged them to think they can run things their way. her results are based on selection more than anything else... so really they are not telling the truth on why this school gets the grades it does. I know this because I have some knowledge on education. You cannot teach low IQ people to get 9s.. not every pupil is academic so I refuse to believe she is giving people a fair shot

I currently work in a catholic school. They should not be allowed it’s totally unacceptable to push this ideology on every child in the class.
They are not pushing any ideology on anyone, some children just want to pray by themselves for literally a few minutes. It is a calming and peaceful act, an act of meditation, it's very beneficial, you should try it.

Let the headteacher govern her school. The pupils wouldn’t be there if their parents didn’t think the school was any good, so therefore the children need to be in lessons. Why do the Muslim pupils feel they have to stand out from everyone else?

Read earlier the school doesn’t have a prayer room. I’ve no problem with that, esp. as all parents are aware of that when they sign their kids up to attend.

We had assembly every day and a prayer and hymn… but of course, that was back in the 50’s. We had a few Jewish children who could be excluded would go to Jewish prayers. Nobody made a comment, it was normal then. Isn’t it better to accept a countries culture and to respect it?

Yes we still had a prayer and a hymn first thing in the morning, just before any announcements, in the 1970's. There was a Jehovah's witness in my class, she was exempt and only joined us for the announcements.

Or have faith based schools and there are muslim schools. You know from the get-go whether it is a faith-based school or not. My son's school tacked on an extra 30 minutes to the school day for 'prayers'. For 17 students out of 890.

I was in A and E 18 months ago, there were no beds so there were about 7 of us 8n a small room on reclining chairs. A young muslim woman started her night prayer ritual which was uncomfortable for the rest of us but couldn't say anything because that would have been racist as we were all white

The answers are going to be something like 'I want to play with my friends, but I feel under duress to pray, or feel forced to pray'. My answer would be you're in a free country. Get your facts right Julia…I just watched an interview with this head teacher and she didn’t tell the kids to pray indoors at all. 50% of the pupils are Muslim and there is no room for large numbers to pray indoors without having to move furniture with extensive teacher supervision.

My husband was recently admitted to Hospital we went into the family room to visit but couldn’t stay as someone was praying on the floor, yet the hospital has a prayer room!
