Tim worked in that area from 77 initially Midland Bank and then moved to St James House to work for Royal Life in 85 and then Townhead House for Sun Life in 89. I was in the branch on Church St, horrible place to work it was run like something out of the 1950's, best move I ever made when I left. The financial district of Sheffield started to collapse in the early 90's when firms started to rationalise and cover Sheffield from their Leeds branches.

She avoided Campo lane like the plague in her lunch hour because of all the begging and drug abuse so sad Tim . Barbers shops and taxis best way to launder money!
I hadn't realised the Golden Ball had been demolished; the Golden Ball had 2 entrances one on Vicar Lane and one on Campo Lane i but can't pinpoint from this where was St James' Church though i heard the graveyard is now a car park😢 i was at Hartshead on New Year's Eve afternoon to discover the Dove & Rainbow was shut, however, you missed the horrors of Aldine Court that was full of garbage and vomit. It has certainly deteriorated in the last 5 year's and i once worked in St Peter's House in I975 it was an insurance company being a hive of activity opposite, as you say, the red "Star" vans lining up. The "Help Centre" building was the Quaker Friends' meeting house. Opposite the "Dove" was the rear entrance to Schofields (Cockaynes) and there was a classy boutique called "The Birdcage" with a display window. No rubbish in the street and no graffiti. The Sheffield Playhouse was not just for "kids" though i did go with the school once in I964 but the Crucible supposedly replaced it that was the excuse for knocking it down.
I have looked on the old map I sent you Lorna and see the exact site of the St James church. I forgot the modern Golden Ball was my walk up into town at lunchtime, I don't remember the original Golden ball pub that was knocked down.
I don't remember it Tim, but not sure what is on that site now🤔 was it the Steel City Plaza that became Plusnet building? I recall also a Scientology Reading Room in that vicinity. @@timawells
