Some existing NASCAR fans need to see this so they can stop complaining about "boring" races.

And side drafting actually slows down both cars and adds more drag to the lead car slowing it down at a quicker rate than yourself

Some other things that non NASCAR fans who are coming over for the first time might be the differences in pit stop procedures from other series. For F1 fans who see the car lifted up and all four tires changed at the same time with one person taking off the lug and tire, someone else putting it on, and the guy who took off the fire (with the air gun) put the lug on. They can do this in as little as 3 seconds, but the FIA doesn't allow for fuel cells to be refilled during the race. As well, each manufacturer team (FIA allows for 2 cars per team) can only pit one car at a time, but NASCAR has a separate pit crew/stall for each of the cars. NASCAR pit stop rules mandate that a max 5 members of the pit crew can be over the wall on a pit stop. Two tire changers, a tire carrier, Jackman, and gasman. The tire changers take off the lug and tire, and retighten the locking lug. The tire carrier will place one tire down at the front and go to the rear to assist with placing the new tire on. The Jackman will move to assist the front tire changer by putting the new tire on. The Jackman will then drop the car, and the entire team will switch to the other side of the car (typically right side to left, but could be opposite depending on the pit road layout at tracks like Watkins Glen) with the tire changers taking the old tires to tire handlers standing behind pit wall, and the tire process repeats. In the meantime the Jackman is filling the fuel cell with 2 can of Sunoco gasoline/petrol before the pit stop is complete. The record for fastest 4 tire pit stop in NASCAR is from a 2023 pitstop of the #54 Joe Gibbs pit crew working on Ty Gibbs car at 8.54 seconds. As well, penalties for pit road that some people might not know is "pit interference" where a tire or piece of equipment goes outside the pit box of the crew that COULD cause interference with the pit crew of another team. Having more than 5 members over the wall at one time, speeding on pit road (NASCAR doesn't allow for a pit limiter like other racing series, nor do they allow for speedometers for the cars), and going through too many pit boxes before yours. A driver must not drive through more than 3 pit boxes before their assigned pit box, if it's in use or not.. (AJ Almendinger at WGI)
Speaking of cars, the F1 has a max field size of 20 cars and drivers, but NASCAR can allow up to a max of 40 drivers. As well people might here of cars and "charter". In some races like the Daytona 500 might have more cars register, but only allow a field of 40 cars to race. However with the "charter system" that NASCAR has in place which allows the full time 36 car field who have charters as guaranteed spots in the races, leaving the other drivers/teams to duke it out for the remaining four spaces.
Qualifying for the Daytona 500 is also different that any other race as they have the main qualifying, but it only sets the front row. the rest of the field is set the in Twin 125 races on Thursday. With Twin #1 setting the inside line, and the 2nd setting the outside line.

Lil tid bit, there are some very slight track limits on some road courses. Example, the esses at COTA they weren't allowed to over cut, and cut through a chicane they make them stop and go.
But you're very right there are no time penalties for track limits on any corner.

As a European road fanboy who thought ovals are boring, I finally tried oval racing a year ago and started doing ovals weekly in iRacing and I'm loving it. Your videos have been invaluable source of learning and information. This Daytona 500 might be the first oval race I ever watch from start to finish - if only I can find where I can watch it here in Europe...

Formula 1 and nascar have very different rules when it comes to yellow flags and pitting...
F1 they don't need to catch up to the pace car before they pit, so it's all relative to where you are to pit entry...
Nascar you have to catch up to pace car and wait for the pits to open..
Plus the tire wear is a lot different for multiple reasons

I think side drafting is more about air getting into the wheel wells, specifically the rear wheel wells. Cause as we know side drafting is effective even with very small spoilers. there might be more to it than that though, but I know for sure it's not just about the spoiler

Because of our local Aussie hero that we imported from New Zealand, Shane Van Gisbergen I watched the Chicago Street Race last year. I'm not going to watch it again. Not because of the racing, that was good. But rather because of the broadcast presentation. Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship and IMSA Weathertech all have zero ad breaks during the race in the broadcast we have in Australia. Watching NASCAR was a shock because it's filled with ad breaks.

i liked the car you used to describe the different types of damage and how they effect the car. looked like Ross Chastain's wall ride car at Martinsville if i'm not mistaken. They actually have that car sitting in the lobby at Track house racing in Charlotte. I was amazed at how little damage that trip around Martinsville did to the side of the car. Great Video!!!

While oval racing is still not really my cup of tea but as a sportscar racing fan I've been taking a liking towards the Short Ovals with Martinsville being my personal favorite.
I really like how Its very aggressive like in touring car racing, has wild dive-bomb overtakes like in GT3 racing, while also being a contest of survival like endurance racing.

check out the Coca Cola 600 at the end of May at Charlotte. It's essentially NASCAR's endurance race, 400 laps around a 1.5 mile oval and the race often takes over 5 hours. As good an example of survival of the fittest as NASCAR has. You'll get multigroove racing, crazy restarts, dive bombs and 3 wide moves. and plenty of big crashes

    • @DJYeeJay
      @DJYeeJay  4 місяці тому +5

To my understanding it’s a carryover from Indianapolis being the first car racing track of its kind and having 4 distinct corner. And then I think it stuck because it became easier to refer to turns 1-4 instead of “entry 1 exit 1, entry 2 exit 2”

It’s so that spotters and announcers have a more accurate way to verbally indicate position of a car. If you’re coming down the frontstretch and hear “they’re wrecking in turn 2” on the radio, you know that it’s at the exit of the first 180-degree turn. If that entire first turn was called “turn 1”, you’d have no idea if they were wrecking at the entrance or exit of the turn as you barrel towards it at 150+mph.

I watched the Netflix series and what i found curious, is in the last race of the season William Byron was fastest car on track in first stint, but he wasn't able to keep up towards the end of the race despite everyone pit for tyres at the same time. Where these changes are coming from? Setup adjustment, track evolution, mix of both or something else?

I've been watching NASCAR for the last 10 years.
The first thing you should know is that NASCAR is not a "May The Best Man Win" sport. They are focused on "close racing" where they try to keep all the cars as close together as they can at all times during the race.
They do this by throwing cautions. Say the leader is running away with it. They can throw a caution and pull him right back into the mix with everyone else. This gives multiple other cars a chance to take the lead and potentially steal a win.
I like to think of it like spinning a roulette wheel and where the ball lands is the winner of the race. Every time they call a caution, they spin the wheel again and a new winner gets chosen.
The best example I can give is NASCAR Overtime. The race almost always goes into overtime and that is completely intentional to get that "Down to the Last Lap" scenario.
It is the same with the Championship. The NASCAR Playoffs are a complicated system, but it basically accomplishes the same random chance scenario and this time we are crowning a champion.
The final race is a winner takes all because it gives the best chance for "The Underdog" to win it all. The best driver of the year almost never wins the Nascar Cup Series Championship. They want their drama and they want their last race to be special. Knowing who will win the championship 1 or 2 weeks in advance doesn't give them that.
    TL;DR: Read the first paragraph.
