I still don't understand why this channel has to end. Can't there be some alternate funding? National science foundation? Grants? Collabs with SciShow? You guys got to do something. 😢
@@DakotaTuttle-k3xYeah I've noticed that too. I wonder why that's the case tough, the videos didn't change that much and the thumbnails all look pretty good to me. And the topic being too niche doesn't make sense, considering the views some of the videos got.
When the last video comes out, make one last everything video dear microcosmos. Love to you. Your videos marked a chapter in my life, one which I will forever be grateful for.
While we don't know for sure why it's sometimes purple and sometimes not, I think dietary factors ARE worth consideration- Kind of like how a flamingo is pink because of what it eats, but on a smaller scale?
I was thinking it might be response to ultraviolet rays which tend to be harmful to microbes, since its found on rooftops. Since it reflects violet it may also reflect ultraviolet like an overlap. Just a thought.

if you've ever knelt down in your yard near a soggy spot and just spent half an hour looking at critters smaller than rice grains in the moss, you'd be impressed at how much life the tiniest patch of moss can support. and thats just the minicosmos. would be neat to have a digital microscope you could plug into your phone and extend the lil legs, and dial it in on moss and stuff in situ
I'm loving this channel. I used to love sticking anything I could find under the microscope from my Gilbert chemistry kit. Note to editor: Good choice of music for the background, but please turn it down. Thanks!
I will be sad to see this channel disappear for lack of a better word. But the biggest thing I've learned... Maybe the greatest thing I've ever learned, is that if you reach out your hand, you will find life in the palm of it. What a beautiful world we live in. What a world we need to take care of. Thank you, James and Hank and all the others involved. ❤ we are stewards of this rockship Earth.
I love how evolutionists like to claim that single cell organisms are "simple" and that they are "obviously" the first of all the life on the planet, but single cell organisms are usually anything but simple. These things have digestive systems, light sensing parts, they hunt for food, and can communicate and work together in some cases etc. Not exactly so simple when you look closely, i mean, i know gen Zers that are less developed.
I always marcel at the beauty of the microcosmos and think about getting tattoos depicting some of the organisms, but I'm afraid this one would look just like a bruise, no matter how pretty the colour is
Well, it does have underlying structural elements, they just don't have any obvious symmetry, and just move towards or away from things that they 'smell'. In essence, our view of life is biased towards animals and plants, we don't understand how cellular life could work day to day, but then our own systems harbor trillions of cells most of whom have the same organelles and structures as the amoeba (we are all eukaryotes).
1. Behaviorism: input -> logic-processing -> output, explains a few things 2. Despite what you may heard, most of the cell is unknown, this unknown parts seem to be more capable of "computation-like" capabilities
This may be a stretch, but if they're found on walls and near gutters, is it possible that they can become airborne when cysts and spread that way? Maybe the outer blob dries up and acts as a sail. Mossy roofs may be a good place to find them.
There may be not a English saying about that particular situation but in Turkey There's a saying in Turkish : "Gökte ararken yerde bulmak" It literally says to find something on the ground while scanning the entire sky 😅😃
Can yall do an episode on oxalate crystals in houseplants (ex. Aglaonema commutatum) ? I have samples of a leaf which has necrotic spots and my professor said no saprophytic fungi or bacteria was found, but that the raphide crystals were stabbing the leaf tissue making wounds, causing the spots. Could you explain how those crystals ended up on the surface of the leaf epidermis if they’re made within the specialized idioblast cells?
I wonder if the mucus layer is an anti-viral defense? And the rod bacteria living there are like clownfish living in anemones, cleaning the mucus of trapped viruses?
I don't know if James has a way of testing for this, but there might be more sulfur in that purple blob than it's little neighbor microbes. I seen to recall a report on some purple sulfur bacteria in a warm pond somewhat recently. Perhaps, this purple amoeba is quite toxic to its neighbors? Or maybe it's good at removing sulfur from its living area? I don't know. Just a thought for some possibly avenues of research if James is stuck. I just think they're beautiful!
I wonder whether the pigmentation is something to do with tryptophan metabolism, possibly as a part of serotonin production, which some amoebae use to enhancepathogenesis. One branch of tryptophan metabolism leads to the formation of indigo, which is purple.
One thing i don't get about microscopic organisms is how come they don't speciate more? like how is it possible you find this ameba in europe and in james backyard(don't know where james lives) is it even the same species genetically, i get that they can be carried by wind, birds, people, etc but i doubt this chance addition to the genepool would happen often enough to maintain a distinct species. Microorganism species must have extremely diverse genes for a species or maybe they evolve really slowly, or convergently evolve though that wouldn't explain the genes idk... could it be that rarely they are the same species and we are really talking about a genus or something? What i'm saying is you grab an animal like a lizard and put in on a deserted island for a long time it's gonna be a divergent species but so are most of the microorganisms that originally inhabited the island right? but they are small so it would hardly need to be a deserted island, could something as simple as just being in another state or a few miles away... is it as simple as the wind being more than enough to seed need organisms around the globe and stop speciation?
Does it prefer to be purple, or is that "illness"? Is its pink v purple pH dependant. Are the bacteria on the surface of purple ones always the same type(s)?
You’re telling me we can tell the exact chemical composition of a star thousands of light years away, even identify the atmosphere of an exoplanet, but we can’t tell why that gutter blob is purple? 😅

Just not enough people watch it, probably. Other funding would be possible, but practically speaking not likely.
Not enough views. I was wondering why they did this show still when the view count was soooo low

Hello there, Life in Jars 😁👋

I love your channel!!
i made my first terrarium because of ur vids ❤
This is it. The episode that I am going to repeatedly play during my pre-bed routine until we more relaxed spoken videos

The problem with that is the color purple is rare in nature. Probably as rare as blue. So I highly doubt it's a dietary thing.

I still don't understand how the organism chooses to move and stick an appendage out without bones, muscles, brain, eyes or nose.
It just does.

In art purple and yellow make brown. Perhaps the reason the colors go brown are one color combining for survival.

I still might qualify as blob.
