That's some S-TIER patience on Chunky
He saved that move that ended up winning him the set. Hasn’t attempted a grab not a single time after jumping over the wall to get to that corner. He’d only throw out a back air, nair, or fake out and jump back. This conditioned that Steve player to hold shield every time chunky got over the wall.

Chunky's strategy was so weird. Everyone tries to stop Steve from getting diamonds but he just allowed it a won the fight afterwards
Considering how popular Steve is, he's probably played thousands of Steve sets and did a lot of experimentation to figure out the best strategy. Steve has strong disjoints (like his bair) that just beat most of DK's options, so you could see him really trying to bait and punish rather than approach.
I don't think he could've. I think he HAD to play it that way. He knew he needed a godly amount of patience and he delivered.
tweek tried something similar vs acola but it works better when a diamond hit won’t insta kill ur character. chunkyking let steve mine so he could punish any move from a full hop position. as opposed to going in and getting jabbed to fair off ledge.

There's a lot of talk about how annoying this Steve player is and how he doesn't ever approach, but both players were doing exactly what they should be for the matchup.
DJDon knows that the moment DK gets in, even a single grab can put him at kill percent, so walling him out and baiting bad approaches is his best option. On the flip side, Chunky knows that being too aggressive and not holding center stage will put DK's gigantic body at a severe disadvantage in tight spaces.
It may seem boring and even irritating, but there's a lot of mental gymnastics going on between both players that shows they really know their characters.

No hate to dj but the skill difference between the two players is monumental. Yet, chunky is still struggling so hard with the MU.
Pretty ironic that even though Chunky can pick up a boulder with relative ease and makes crushing rocks seem such a breeze, he can't do anything vs stone blocks
I rarely even play this game but Jesus I actually do not like steve. His gameplay of hiding and mining is so boring, way more boring than sonic at this point.
