It wasn’t until listening to this song again this year, after loving it for 50 years, that I realized “drop a line” referred to what you would do from the ship when you were docking. But you got it right away.
It’s double meaning... morrison did that a lot, like in waiting for the sun.... it’s both literal, to Mary werbelow, but it’s also symbolic metaphor as you pointed out.... morrison at his best, wrote 4dimensional lyrics. They could tell 2 different narratives, yet in a transcending way converge to an even greater meaning... that was the Blake symbolist influence... morrison was inconsistent. But when he was dialed in, he’s mt Rushmore level lyrically in the history of popular music.

One reason was the great radio jock Ron Britain, who every Sunday night hosted an underground music show, the Subterranean Circus. At one Chicago show, he had the privilege of introducing The Doors: "Ladies and gentlemen, Jim Morrison and The Doors!" As Ron humbly recounted on air, at set break Morrison, in a high state of dudgeon, cornered him backstage and told him, "Jim Morrison and The Doors?!?!? It's not 'Jim Morrison and The Doors'! If it were 'Jim Morrison and The Doors', there would be five people on stage. There's only four people on stage!" Back in the late 70's - early 80's, there was a band in the NY area called "Crystal Ship". They were a Doors cover/tribute band. I still remember their commercials on the rock radio stations advertising their shows. They were supposed to play my high school once, but only a handful of us bought tickets, so they canceled. That's the closest I came to ever seeing "The Doors". 😔

"Drop me a line" was a common expression at a time when there was no Email. Mailing a letter to a girl, romance I miss. I saw the Doors in 1969 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, a long story, the best concert I ever saw. The sound system was perfect, The Doors were at the top of their game. Jim Morrison was great.

This was off their debut album and would have been one of the first if not the first time Jim was recorded on tape . This whole album deserves a reaction and if you approach it from the stand point that one of rock's most iconic front men had no formal singing experience or training as well as no formal experience on stage this album is nothing short of fantastic . some people just have it ..

When The Doors recorded their music, they brought in a bass player to do the bass lines, but live it was Ray Manzarek who covered the bass notes using the Fender Bass keyboard. Morrison viewed himself more as a poet than a singer or rock star.

This whole album deserves a reaction and if you approach it from the stand point that one of rock's most iconic front men had no formal singing experience or training as well as no formal experience on stage this album is nothing short of fantastic . some people just have it ..

Hey Jamel. Talking about appreciating the love brought to mind a band I think you would love. The band is called Love and they are contemporaries of The Doors in a similar genre and with an equally charismatic singer. And I would love it if you tried them out, possibly starting with "Alone again or". Just a suggestion.
Early Doors music, with Morrison's vocals plus Ray Manzarek's keyboard work, was hypnotic.

I love the Doors when they're doing raw and bluesy, and when they're going off on a psychedelic jam, but this is probably my favorite Doors song, because like you said-it's pure poetry. And even though I knew of course this song wasn't about me, it FELT like he was singing to me, or for me. Thank you for keeping great music alive!

When The Doors recorded their music, they brought in a bass player to do the bass lines, but live it was Ray Manzarek who covered the bass notes using the Fender Bass keyboard. Morrison viewed himself more as a poet than a singer or rock star.
