I have no idea how Confucius inspires so many here to mock him, making up sayings in a style that he never used. I just came here from an Archbishop Fulton Sheen lecture in which he calls Confucius "a very wise man," explaining how the philosopher observed that, over our lifetime, most do not become better people but merely sublimate the base desires of their youth. A very modern take, said 2500 years ago. So I am glad that you too are wondering what the heck is going on, and you put it in a funny way.

    ACTUAL quotes from Confucius-
"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."
"Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it."
"The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones."
"He who conquers himself is the mightiest warrior."
"To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge."
"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."
"Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart."

These are not actual quotes. Here’s some actual quotes:
“To study and sometimes practice what is learned, is that not enjoyment? To be visited by a friend from faraway, is that not happiness?”
“Respect the gods but keep a distance from them. If one cannot serve other humans well, how can one serve the gods.”
“To govern with virtue, is similar to the Northern pole: staying in its own place, yet supported by all the stars.”

It's interesting how similar Confucius's summary of his philosophy sounds to Jesus's summary of Christianity, and Rabbi Hillel's summary of Judaism, and Guantama Buddha's summary of Buddhism, and really every major world religion. "Don't be a dick" seems to be a pretty universal religious concept.

In Catholic school, Confucius was actually mentioned in a few of our theology textbooks, along with other religious leaders. Apparently his advice is known as the silver rule and is actually found in many cultures and religions, because it's good advice, after all. The Christians follow the silver rule and also the golden rule, which says to do to others what you would want done to you. Apparently the only distinction is that the silver rule is basically "don't be cruel to others if you don't want them to be cruel to you," while the golden rule is "be nice to others if you want them to be nice to you." Basically the same idea though. Religion is weird that way.

There's an painting that summerizes the three main Eastern philosophies, the Buddha, Confucius and Lao Tzu standing around a vat of vinegar. Buddha says it is bitter, Confucius says it is sour, and Lao Tzu says it is sweet. The vinegar is our lives.

Like some of this ancient philosopher's quotes. He once said "he who slings mud, losers ground." My stepmother (dad's 5th wife) had a refrigerator magnet that had my yearbook picture attached to it on their fridge. Don't get me started; that was the same year that I got class favorite in elementary school! This video is well worth watching. 4tg grade should have been a good year. 1992 Central High School K-12 Florence, Alabama.

"Human character is formed in the family." (1:30)
My heart had stopped and I became unconscious. There appeared to me the sum and summary of what my life had meant to me. Presented to me as a spreadsheet (of all things) of a list of events in my life sorted by meaningfulness. To me (your mileage may vary) they were sorted by family first, then friends, acquaintances, and, finally, strangers never met.
Forgive my "sage" advice (you already knew):
A most meaningful slice of life is interaction with other human beings being human too. Make your life more meaningful to you by making the lives of people around you more meaningful to them.
