Her voice coach made her train her voice to become more nasally and high pitched thinking it'd be better. He didn't do his job right, he broke her. She's still great, I still love her music, but she would have been so much better if her coach had just let her use her natural voice rather than what we hear on the radio.

i think it`s sad that people compare Brittany unfavourably to Christina, they were def on a par at this age, Brittany had the same potential and was just as good, she still is but has lost herself a little on the way :-(

People get so caught up in hating the music that Britney makes that they lose sight and and turn their hatred toward her. I read somewhere that it was her producers and record label that manipulated her voice to be what it is now. When she first started on "...Baby One More Time" she was herself, but afterwards her label wanted to have the throaty, "innocent" sounding voice and they wanted to make that her signature sound so they made her sing that way. Sad huh??

The baby voice is not a "nasally high register" (it doesn't make any sense anyway). The baby voice is a vocal tract configuration to lighten the color of her voice. It is day and night because it sounds different but it's still her voice. it's only the resonnance that is different.
Remember Nicole Scherzinger? She did the same when she was in Pussycat dolls. Totally sang in pop mode. But she was trained to sing classical music. She would have been bigger if she used her real voice and talent from day 1. Now she is forgotten!

Max Martin admitted in an interview that he made Britney ( and N*sync + Backstreet Boys) sing in that 'nasally' way on purpose. He wanted that distinct 'pop sound' we hear from her til this day.
