In the South African Boer war (1899 - 1902) 45,000 Boers (Dutch / French / German descendant farmers) were organised into the Kommando system, essentially district based volunteer units with elected leaders. The Boer kommandos (militia companies) kept 450,000 regular British troops occupied for 3 years and won several major conventional battles and later guerilla skirmishes against much larger British formations. The Boers were light cavalry who knew the land and veld and excellent riflemen. Man for man were better than the British regulars. Each Boer, when called up for service had to join the Kommando with horse, rifle (usually a mauser) 200 rounds of ammo and food for 2 weeks.

I'm a former Marine Infantry. Another person in the group that was a pain in the neck, was the steroid muscle guy. They lacked endurance and stamina. They were always asking you if you had any food that you were not eating or food to spare. They had to keep their muscles fed or they would get lethargic. They were the biggest babies in the field. It was always best to have lean strong guys, that had the mix of strength but also stamina and endurance.
@@Bucky1836yeah, i did landscape gardening..a guy who lifted weights a lot came to work with us and had to take a break after ten minutes of us moving 75kg bags of sand from the van through a house to the back yard.. he was not used to moving/walking with weight at all.. and us skinny guys were not finding it a problem at all..i never felt i built up to doing that kind of weight of bag, we just did so much carrying and digging of stuff that our core strength and stamina developed naturally..
This is true! I was in the Corps and a lot of Marines are all muscle. Those guys couldn't run and had no endurance. They could life heavy shit for a few seconds. They have energy in bursts then they are cooked.

Since the military trains you in counter insurgency tactics and the minutemen were insurgents then it makes perfect sense for minutemen to learn the counter insurgency tactics that the enemy will use. Just like the Swamp Fox Francis Marion. He served in the british army but then was a guerrilla fighter leading a militia unit during the Revolution. It was well documented how bad the militia guys were in the Revolution but Francis Marion was a notable exception. He knew british tactics already and was familiar with native american tactics and used his knowledge against the british. And that was my Nasty Guard unit 200+ years ago lol

As a vet, I know plenty of vets and currents who are sympathetic to the minute concept, but, if the minute concept doesn't have legitimacy or pops off the wrong way, no one is siding with them. Plus the paychecks the VA paychecks etc, if they are all tied to "pro" the only people on minute side will be Billy Bob. Without an infrastructure to maintain some of the pay even if slightly cut, it'll be over before it starts.

That's not true everywhere. Small rural communities often have that very dynamic working in their favor. I'm a new transplant to my rural area, and everyone knows everyone. I introduced myself to everyone after about a month, and we all trade goods and services. The cities are the ones that will tear eachother apart. I'll be trading transportation (we keep horses) and basic home security (I'm no soldier, but I know my way around a weapon, have food, and have simple perimeter training) for whatever is available.
During my service in Nicaragua and El Salvador I organize two man teams that devastated the enemy. Guys, if you don't own land & can't run drills, you can use public land to ruck & learn survival skills. Wars are not just won by gunfighting they are also won by producing & acquiring enough food as well as knowing what is needed to stay warm & dry. Lots of stuff involved. Work on your bags. It shouldn't just be filled with fighting gear; in our case we need to be able to survive without a huge infrastructure backing our every move.
Excellent suggestion on using public land! I live adjacent to the affluent Bethesda area outside of DC, and I frequently go to the woods in the very affluent Potomac area. Lots of wooded land, rocky (granite) terrain, prehistoric flora, interesting fauna and the Ohio river courses through it, and it borders Maryland/DC/Virginia. Most rich folks are largely liberal, vote Democrat, are pro-big government and love authoritarianism. This includes the “Oath takers”, military, politicians, law enforcement types living there, along with lawyers, judges, media personalities, celebrities, lobbyists and big industry heads. Suffice it to say that I typically bring along my PDW in my ruck when doing runs in the more advanced goat trails. I know I’d get into trouble if caught, but, hell… I call it the “Freedom Run”! Did mine yesterday, while most prepped for the Super Bowl. :D

I'm 60 and have injuries that would limit my abilities these days. I am well aware I can no longer be an asset to a patrol. I can instruct and pass on knowledge and be a positive asset on a perimeter. Logistics is the basis.
Gotta have cooks and mechanics and smiths. Everyone has their own skills that they can contribute. I would recommend practicing and perfecting your first aid skills. You may not be fighting but you can help the wounded and sick.

True...to a degree. Even the minuteman/guerrilla needs some fashion of logistical support too, though. You're just not going to get very far unless you have locals support for hiding, food, ammo cache resupplies, forms of transport besides on foot, communications with others Intel on enemy, etc. The whole lone wolf thing needs to die. That's pure video game/movie fantasy. Even as a minuteman/guerrilla, if you don't have your own logistical support systems.... you don't fight. Well, you could, but then that's suicide mission territory.
Only at intial deployment. Minutemen were required to always have their pack packed, and have at least 60 rounds of ball and powder, and a gun, tomahawk and knife. That's a combat load. However, once deployed, Minutemen often received resupply from the folks back home via various means
I definitely agree, but I think I can add a little bit to this from a little bit of a different perspective. When I did what I'll just refer to as unconventional work for the gov't, we didn't have the same rules regarding hands in pockets. We were also able to set up our kit and use certain things they had, request certain items, as long as "it's reasonable" (whatever that meant). The difference I noticed as far as discipline, was we all had self discipline. That's not to say the conventional military doesn't at all. Some guys certainly do. We all had to have self discipline and meet performance standards, or you were out. I mention this to help put (I'm sorry, but I don't remember his name right now) GP's point into perspective from the unconventional SOF side. While I recognize I have a bias toward that side, due to that being my experience, I would still make the argument there are a lot of lessons, standards, and TTP's that can apply to a modern minuteman group. One of them being self discipline. If you can only appear to have discipline while you have a babysitter, you don't have discipline and shouldn't be rewarded with trust. Personally, I would rather have a squad (which for us was 12) of guys with self discipline, than a platoon of guys who need a babysitter to act right. I know, I know, I can already hear someone saying "Well, we aren't SOF". Bro, I'm not anymore, either. However, you can still have that self discipline and trustworthiness. Throw in the ability to have insight (so you can lose your ego, and accurately evaluate yourself) and you become a very trainable, valuable asset. I hope the points I intended on making were clear, and most people weren't too lazy to read a few short paragraphs. As I think this is an important subject.
You are correct. It’s easy to learn the wrong lessons from discussions like this. I have a sneaking suspicion that many envision themselves on long range recon or CQB, but never consider long hours spent in an OP in pouring down freezing rain. There is a method to the madness when it comes to self discipline. Attention to detail creates good habits when shit goes down at 2 A.M.

Hell yeah you'll have a role! Transportation and logistics will always fill a critical role. For example; If the "high speed team" "takes" a Home Depot who's gonna be called in to haul off "the loot"? If a base camp has to be torn down and moved it will probably be very handy to have a tractor trailer and an experienced driver ready to go. Most people probably wouldn't even know they gotta hook up the air lines let alone be able to maneuver around obstacles or back it up. As far as combat skills, you just have to defend the area around that truck which could at any time become "The Alamo". Im an older vet, now a trailer mechanic, but in the military was involved in some convoy road ops. We won't have air support but hopefully we'll still have trucks and trailers!

My senior thesis in political science was about why the federalists stood for Lockean Natural Law more so than the anti-federalists and purist libertarians today. And the biggest argument I had was the necessity for a professional army to secure freedom and security. And I mainly focused on Washington and others criticisms of the militia guys and their cowardice and lack of discipline compared to the continental army and the british army, then Rome creating a professional army to defend from ruthless Gaul attacks while the Gaul warriors were genetically larger and stronger and trained from childhood to fight and then finally I showed how the American military dominated the Viet Cong and the Taliban even though many of them were tougher and had more combat experience. I also threw in my own experience with the National Guard and how the regular army would dominate us easily yet we would dominate civilians easily. Point is I think you're right from a historical standpoint about the necessity for regular training and discipline in a militia.
John Lovell over at WPS made a succinct point that the Afghanis deterred Alexander the Great, the British, the Soviets and the Americans. And the difference is that they subsist on very little. No training required, because they are survivalists daily. No amount of military training can impart self sufficiency. That is something we need to implement in our daily lives.

Its awesome to run into a former 38B, in CA we operated in SOF mindset to having tactical mindset of SMC. Also, everyone brought something to 4-man team and rank got put aside as well pride. I see E4s with Doctorates or SME in an area.
The strength of America was always in our civilian working population until 'they' moved industrial production out of country. The American military since after Vietnam, has been a place to keep a roof over your head, meals in your belly and money for college. No average young man could afford rent from the mid to late 1970's forward, (me) There were no decent union paying jobs except for select government employees in civil service jobs, like today. Any grassroots counter revolution against the current communist globalist insurgency today, is going to have a deadly learning curve because there's no hard men left with a lifetime of hard family, hard work, lean food and daily discipline of study, chores and hard play. The military training is no substitute for a lifetime of hardwork, hard play, hard study and proper nutrition of lean food in modest amounts. Any attempt to stop the current communist insurrection is going to be very costly. The positive side is they're no better off, facing the same human frailties but they've already conquered the propaganda part of the war by owning most of the news.

During my time in 7th SFG there was NEVER any rank during any operational deployment. The Officers were our administrators but they NEVER made any decisions about anything without our input. CSM Chapa
I’ve been in the military and have been a F&I, and Rev, reenactor for decades. The Militia were mostly a defensive force. Minute men were the QRF of the town or County militia for either defense or offense. While Rangers ranged as Scouts, gathered intel and conducted ambushes. and warned of enemy activity. Even the older folks were fit. Common defense is everyone’s responsibility but serving as a Minuteman or Ranger was the elite.
Truth. Being older does have its limitations. However, if you are a skilled tradesman, you definitely can bring your craft to the fight. A lot of people don't realize there's a big support and logistical structure to support one 11 bang bang. 4 or 5 people doing different jobs keeps one man in the field.
To be real, you can't run a "camp"/"base" on younger guys, sometimes, 20 young dudes are worth less than 5 older guys. Expirience has its toll and just as fighting is important so is knowage and driving experience and crafting experience and so on.
There's always a need for someone to cook and clean in any organization. If you're willing to step up, own it, and take accountability for your decisions.
As am O-3, I can tell you there is a big difference between stateside and combat situations. NOT being a ring knocker got me some respect, but I quickly learned to listen to what I was being told by the specialists. It saved our bacon more than once, and helped build a team. Now that I'm old, I use that in the corporate world. You're right, I know I won't be on patrol anymore, but I can get along with people, help work logistics, and still hit my target at around 700 yards.
As an obese 28 year old man, I completely agree. The fear of being left behind/alone is an incredible motivator and I'd feel horrible if someone else, especially someone I care about was at risk just because of my physical inability to keep up; it would be even worse if I got off scottfree and they paid the price for my inabilities. This has been, in conjunction with the current state of affairs in the nation/world, the primary motivator for me to get this fat off.
Stateside kills are so much different especially when you get into a gunfight and a few hours later you find yourself at home changing your kids diapers. It freaked me out

What has made the American fighting man what he was is the fact that he brought his civilian lifestyle to the fight. Those who grew up shooting dinner could hit better than the best professional soldier. They brought their civilian trades to the fight keeping things running when it should have been out of action. He would not blindly follow orders. Instead, he would think freely and carry out orders instead of simply obeying orders
Uh, no. The Germans surrendered on the Western Front in WWI because the presence of the Dough Boys showed that America was finally serious. They weren't afraid of the Dough Boys. The Krauts could've easily dealt with them. The Germans were afraid of what was potentially behind them. Artillery, and airplanes, and mechanized warfare on a scale the world had never seen.
Logistics, organization, and technology are on the side of the professionals. Resistance to that will be sporadic and weak with hit and runs where the enemy is weakest. You’re looking at a long, bloody conflict, probably akin to the Irish and Britain.

Going back to my days as a grunt (88-2004, with a break in service in the 1990s), we used to have a standard that was set, in each of our units. Minimum score of 225 on the PT tests, with a MINIMUM of 75% in each category. Our unit routinely had to meet the "fit to fight" standards at the time, which, as I recall, was 70% minimum in each PT category. If you didnt meet the standard, you had fat camp at the end of the day. We also did weekly ruck marches every friday, up to 8 miles, with a monthly 15 miler. Being short of stature, I HATED those, as I was constantly jogging. Our PT sessions were pretty good though. Our CO was ex SF, and our 1SG was ex ranger batt, so our PT was pretty varied and interesting. We did things like HMMWV pulls, cart races, man down drills, gun range runs, etc. These days, I am old, with bad knees, bad attitude, and partly deaf. I kinda miss those younger days.... Except monday morning drunk runs. Those sucked.

Also you have to think about you're gear as a minute man vs military. When I first got to the Marine school of Infantry we were still using the old ALICE pack and LBV etc. Then they started giving us the new gear and with the new gear a repair kit. The ALICE gear I was using was very old and beat up, but was still serviceable. The new gear was designed to be light weight and the material was thinner to accomplish this. There was a lot of plastic used in the new gear. We started seeing a lot of failures. A lot of times after one deployment you had a lot of gear you had to get swapped out. That leads me to my point. Don't buy the Gucci gear just because it's cool. You need to make sure you get gear that will last years, because eventually you will not have eBay, Amazon, etc. to order from. You also need to learn to sew, by hand and machine.
Your service is nothing compared to what's going on in Eastern Europe. Get office your high horse "experienced veteran" or whatever you called yourself
How would you suggest to balance ability to do things like combat patrols with your need for numbers? Say hypothetically you have 40 people but only 10 of them are physically capable of a 9 minute mile and only 5 of them are capable of an 8 minute mile. What do you do if you have a need for more people but they don't quite measure up to the ideal fitness standards?
"Discipline is discipline" might be the most underrated statement of that entire video. So crucial yet most of the time whenever I see a "militia" group training, it is complete disorganization and beer bellies.

I'm 65, not exactly that lean, mean fightin machine I used to be. I can still keep up for a while, but only for a while. This shit's a young man's game. I don't need to be out there dragging the team down, being a liability rather than an asset. But what I can do is exactly what you were talking about: support activity. I can help train younger troops, handle supply & transportation, organize, go take a look around town, communications, security around base/camp....somebody's gotta do the cooking, right? I can still do those things that insure the team's success. And as you know, it takes a shit-ton of support to keep people operating in the field. Just because you're not fit for active combat, doesn't mean you're not fit to serve. But like the man said: " I may not be as good as I once was, But I'm as good once as I ever was." I'll do what I gotta do.
I was talking about the same things you touched on a few days ago. The main idea is that we all have our strengths and weaknesses, what we do well and not do well. We need mechanics, electricians, logistics guys, technology/drone guys, people who can organize and coordinate. EVERYONE IS NOT AND CANNOT BE a grunt.

Some of the modern minuteman who were veterans wrote books on this were people could understand it better than trying to reading the military fields manual
Deployed back to back with the guard in 03-05 to bagdad we never had support but we were used to it we had enough civilian backgrounds we could accomplish anything as a unit unlike the professional military. I don't care if you think less of my service because I saw what we did day in and day out with nothing, in a fob the 82nd took over and lost control of the area we had in sadar city that the guard controlled through the first election.
I contracted in Iraq and could easily see the difference between the Guard and the regular army. The Guard was usually way more down to earth and much more competent at problem-solving.

I concur with this entire video. I did not fight my medical retirement from Iraq because i didn't want to be that broke-dick SSG holding a spot up for a perfectly fit soldier. I can still think like a 12B, but i can't perform like one should. In a MM situation, I am more than happy to do Logistics or Commo. I would rather give my best supporting those that can, than holding them up.
As an old American Combat Vet (US Army 505th PIR 82nd Airborne Division). To ME, this "Minuteman" seems to be very tense and highly agitated, HIS pacing up and down, his heavy sighing every sentence of two, his slinging an Assault Weapon, as if the Enemy were coming any minute. (This was only done for dramatic effect.) I am a 100% American Patriot. However, I advise anyone to not pay attention to this disgruntled, and psychologically disturbed, "Militia Man". His rants are disjointed, and at times unintelligible. I could pick apart all his BS, but there is not the text room for this. Again, I been in combat. I know the territory. This man is misleading you by error, or on purpose with an agenda. Either way, he is wrong. Furthermore, this man is very obviously Mentally Unstable. He is mostly just an embarrassment to any Military Professional. And, I mean All well trained Military Men and Women of any Free World Country. By the way, every professional Military of the World...American, British, French, Mexican, German, Russian, Ukrainian, Canadian, Polish, Spanish, and on and on, Follows the, "No Man Left Behind" Principle. This sounds like a group that has the potential to actually be effective and survive. Great insight and reality. Managed projects nationally for years on the civilian side. Coordinating and putting the correct people in place to be effective is the only way to achieve objectives successfully with minimum issues.

I've actually thought about this quite a bit. You're right, meritocracy wins. We have to face reality. We are what we are, not what we were. But it's not as linear as you make it sound. Does Randal want someone that doesn't know shit next to him just because he can keep up? Or does he want someone a little slower and older who can give a sitrep, a target indication, whose personal admin in the field doesn't leave a breadcrumb trail to the location, or whose personal skills allow him to avoid becoming a weather casualty? I know what I'd prefer. Ultimately, it's mission-dependent. But in most cases, we'll need as many guns in the fight as possible because we'll always be the underdog.

We haven't won a war in almost 80yrs. And even then -- The Soviets did most of the killing of nazis. Professional soldiers follow training and doctrine. As a result, the US Army is always following what failed in the last war. They're still running units through mock Iraqi villages at 29 Palms today!!! While in Ukraine, we see drones being used even down at the platoon and squad element, mk 19 -type weapons mounted on ATVs, etc., etc. A strongly motivated, irregular, indigenous force will ALWAYS defeat the US military. At home, or abroad. Note: Von Steuben was a CHOMO. That's why he was in America. The Prusssians couldn't stand him. I'm an old grunt. Almost 60. I can still outhump most guys 1/3 my age. I dryfire daily, train to MEUSOC timed and scored standards for carbine and pistol weekly. Now, I can't go balls to the wall more than a few days before I need my recovery time. The Soviets did most of the killing because that is where all the Germans were. On the western end there was just a skeleton crew. The Soviets just used human wave attacks because they so greatly outnumbered the Germans. The Germans inflicted insane casualties on them, the ratio is ridiculous they killed over 20 million Soviets. I wouldn't give the Soviets too much credit for that. Commies don't care about their people or their troops. They are also lucky that the west convinced Japan not to attack Russia. If the Japs had attacked Russia at the same time as the Germans, it would have been over for the Soviets, no doubt.

How good of shape should I be in?? I'm 56 years old, 5'8" and about 205 pounds. Last July my my 10k time was 1 hour and 5 minutes. I load hay in my 4x4 truck every day to feed cattle. I also run through the corral carrying two 5 gallon buckets of grain to feed almost 30 1500 pound linebackers trying to get their grain. I get bumped, hit, kicked, stepped on, etc. almost daily.

I used to routinely run a private cadet corps/JROTC as opfor against NG, reserve units, DEA going overseas and even SF and we made them better by being aggressive and innovative. We were the spirit of the militia. Our honorary colonel in chief was Col. Aaron Bank (look it up if you don't know your military history). I even have a certificate making me an honorary member of 2/5th SF. I grant you all that was said but ultimately victory comes from motivation.

You've got to be brutally honest with yourself and hold yourself accountable to reality. Example: I'm a 58 year old vet that is fit in every aspect except arthritic knees. I had to come to terms with the fact I can't go out on an op. My new role would be a support role such as transportation to the infil point and to be there for exfil. That's as close to a field op that I'm gonna get. Out side of that I can fulfill whatever support and logistic roles are needed that fit within my skill sets or abilities and I'm good with that. Sh!t, If I have to dig latrines or fighting positions I'll do it.... I won't like it, but I'll do it. Alot of dudes don't realize that most of war fighting doesn't involve shooting. It's lot of setting up camps, constantly improving your position, tearing it all down and moving. Rinse and repeat. You've got to play your position. Purely hypothetical, but knowledge of professional tactics and stratagems. This is not to emulate but to be able to anticipate. Michael Collins fought professional soldiers straight from four years of combat in WW1. Mr. Collins had no tanks, artillery, or such. His squad had handguns. They invented tactics which drained the world power. Ahmed Jibril of the GC-PFLP was able to fight even the IDF Sayaret units. So one must not try to be what they are not, but become what they need to be.

In the South African Boer war (1899 - 1902) 45,000 Boers (Dutch / French / German descendant farmers) were organised into the Kommando system, essentially district based volunteer units with elected leaders. The Boer kommandos (militia companies) kept 450,000 regular British troops occupied for 3 years and won several major conventional battles and later guerilla skirmishes against much larger British formations. The Boers were light cavalry who knew the land and veld and excellent riflemen. Man for man were better than the British regulars. Each Boer, when called up for service had to join the Kommando with horse, rifle (usually a mauser) 200 rounds of ammo and food for 2 weeks.

I'm a former Marine Infantry. Another person in the group that was a pain in the neck, was the steroid muscle guy. They lacked endurance and stamina. They were always asking you if you had any food that you were not eating or food to spare. They had to keep their muscles fed or they would get lethargic. They were the biggest babies in the field. It was always best to have lean strong guys, that had the mix of strength but also stamina and endurance.
Steroid junkies can't hold their own weight, they also have limited range of motion.

This is true! I was in the Corps and a lot of Marines are all muscle. Those guys couldn't run and had no endurance. They could life heavy shit for a few seconds. They have energy in bursts then they are cooked.

Since the military trains you in counter insurgency tactics and the minutemen were insurgents then it makes perfect sense for minutemen to learn the counter insurgency tactics that the enemy will use. Just like the Swamp Fox Francis Marion. He served in the british army but then was a guerrilla fighter leading a militia unit during the Revolution. It was well documented how bad the militia guys were in the Revolution but Francis Marion was a notable exception. He knew british tactics already and was familiar with native american tactics and used his knowledge against the british.

Without an infrastructure to maintain some of the pay even if slightly cut, it'll be over before it starts.

I'm a new transplant to my rural area, and everyone knows everyone. I introduced myself to everyone after about a month, and we all trade goods and services.
The cities are the ones that will tear eachother apart. I'll be trading transportation (we keep horses) and basic home security (I'm no soldier, but I know my way around a weapon, have food, and have simple perimeter training) for whatever is available.

Guys, if you don't own land & can't run drills, you can use public land to ruck & learn survival skills. Wars are not just won by gunfighting they are also won by producing & acquiring enough food as well as knowing what is needed to stay warm & dry. Lots of stuff involved. Work on your bags. It shouldn't just be filled with fighting gear; in our case we need to be able to survive without a huge infrastructure backing our every move.
Excellent suggestion on using public land! I live adjacent to the affluent Bethesda area outside of DC, and I frequently go to the woods in the very affluent Potomac area.
Lots of wooded land, rocky (granite) terrain, prehistoric flora, interesting fauna and the Ohio river courses through it, and it borders Maryland/DC/Virginia.
Most rich folks are largely liberal, vote Democrat, are pro-big government and love authoritarianism. This includes the “Oath takers”, military, politicians, law enforcement types living there, along with lawyers, judges, media personalities, celebrities, lobbyists and big industry heads.
Suffice it to say that I typically bring along my PDW in my ruck when doing runs in the more advanced goat trails.
I know I’d get into trouble if caught, but, hell… I call it the “Freedom Run”! Did mine yesterday, while most prepped for the Super Bowl. :D

Only at intial deployment. Minutemen were required to always have their pack packed, and have at least 60 rounds of ball and powder, and a gun, tomahawk and knife. That's a combat load. However, once deployed, Minutemen often received resupply from the folks back home via various means
I definitely agree, but I think I can add a little bit to this from a little bit of a different perspective.
When I did what I'll just refer to as unconventional work for the gov't, we didn't have the same rules regarding hands in pockets. We were also able to set up our kit and use certain things they had, request certain items, as long as "it's reasonable" (whatever that meant). The difference I noticed as far as discipline, was we all had self discipline. That's not to say the conventional military doesn't at all. Some guys certainly do. We all had to have self discipline and meet performance standards, or you were out.
I mention this to help put (I'm sorry, but I don't remember his name right now) GP's point into perspective from the unconventional SOF side. While I recognize I have a bias toward that side, due to that being my experience, I would still make the argument there are a lot of lessons, standards, and TTP's that can apply to a modern minuteman group. One of them being self discipline. If you can only appear to have discipline while you have a babysitter, you don't have discipline and shouldn't be rewarded with trust. Personally, I would rather have a squad (which for us was 12) of guys with self discipline, than a platoon of guys who need a babysitter to act right.
I know, I know, I can already hear someone saying "Well, we aren't SOF". Bro, I'm not anymore, either. However, you can still have that self discipline and trustworthiness. Throw in the ability to have insight (so you can lose your ego, and accurately evaluate yourself) and you become a very trainable, valuable asset.
I hope the points I intended on making were clear, and most people weren't too lazy to read a few short paragraphs. As I think this is an important subject.
You are correct. It’s easy to learn the wrong lessons from discussions like this. I have a sneaking suspicion that many envision themselves on long range recon or CQB, but never consider long hours spent in an OP in pouring down freezing rain. There is a method to the madness when it comes to self discipline. Attention to detail creates good habits when shit goes down at 2 A.M.

Hell yeah you'll have a role! Transportation and logistics will always fill a critical role. For example; If the "high speed team" "takes" a Home Depot who's gonna be called in to haul off "the loot"? If a base camp has to be torn down and moved it will probably be very handy to have a tractor trailer and an experienced driver ready to go. Most people probably wouldn't even know they gotta hook up the air lines let alone be able to maneuver around obstacles or back it up. As far as combat skills, you just have to defend the area around that truck which could at any time become "The Alamo". Im an older vet, now a trailer mechanic, but in the military was involved in some convoy road ops. We won't have air support but hopefully we'll still have trucks and trailers!

My senior thesis in political science was about why the federalists stood for Lockean Natural Law more so than the anti-federalists and purist libertarians today. And the biggest argument I had was the necessity for a professional army to secure freedom and security. And I mainly focused on Washington and others criticisms of the militia guys and their cowardice and lack of discipline compared to the continental army and the british army, then Rome creating a professional army to defend from ruthless Gaul attacks while the Gaul warriors were genetically larger and stronger and trained from childhood to fight and then finally I showed how the American military dominated the Viet Cong and the Taliban even though many of them were tougher and had more combat experience. I also threw in my own experience with the National Guard and how the regular army would dominate us easily yet we would dominate civilians easily.
Point is I think you're right from a historical standpoint about the necessity for regular training and discipline in a militia.
John Lovell over at WPS made a succinct point that the Afghanis deterred Alexander the Great, the British, the Soviets and the Americans. And the difference is that they subsist on very little. No training required, because they are survivalists daily. No amount of military training can impart self sufficiency. That is something we need to implement in our daily lives.

The American military since after Vietnam, has been a place to keep a roof over your head, meals in your belly and money for college. No average young man could afford rent from the mid to late 1970's forward, (me) There were no decent union paying jobs except for select government employees in civil service jobs, like today. Any grassroots counter revolution against the current communist globalist insurgency today, is going to have a deadly learning curve because there's no hard men left with a lifetime of hard family, hard work, lean food and daily discipline of study, chores and hard play. The military training is no substitute for a lifetime of hardwork, hard play, hard study and proper nutrition of lean food in modest amounts.
Any attempt to stop the current communist insurrection is going to be very costly. The positive side is they're no better off, facing the same human frailties but they've already conquered the propaganda part of the war by owning most of the news.

I’ve been in the military and have been a F&I, and Rev, reenactor for decades. The Militia were mostly a defensive force. Minute men were the QRF of the town or County militia for either defense or offense. While Rangers ranged as Scouts, gathered intel and conducted ambushes. and warned of enemy activity. Even the older folks were fit. Common defense is everyone’s responsibility but serving as a Minuteman or Ranger was the elite.
Truth. Being older does have its limitations. However, if you are a skilled tradesman, you definitely can bring your craft to the fight. A lot of people don't realize there's a big support and logistical structure to support one 11 bang bang. 4 or 5 people doing different jobs keeps one man in the field.
To be real, you can't run a "camp"/"base" on younger guys, sometimes, 20 young dudes are worth less than 5 older guys. Expirience has its toll and just as fighting is important so is knowage and driving experience and crafting experience and so on.
There's always a need for someone to cook and clean in any organization. If you're willing to step up, own it, and take accountability for your decisions.

As am O-3, I can tell you there is a big difference between stateside and combat situations. NOT being a ring knocker got me some respect, but I quickly learned to listen to what I was being told by the specialists. It saved our bacon more than once, and helped build a team. Now that I'm old, I use that in the corporate world.
You're right, I know I won't be on patrol anymore, but I can get along with people, help work logistics, and still hit my target at around 700 yards.

As an obese 28 year old man, I completely agree. The fear of being left behind/alone is an incredible motivator and I'd feel horrible if someone else, especially someone I care about was at risk just because of my physical inability to keep up; it would be even worse if I got off scottfree and they paid the price for my inabilities. This has been, in conjunction with the current state of affairs in the nation/world, the primary motivator for me to get this fat off.
Stateside kills are so much different especially when you get into a gunfight and a few hours later you find yourself at home changing your kids diapers. It freaked me out

Those who grew up shooting dinner could hit better than the best professional soldier. They brought their civilian trades to the fight keeping things running when it should have been out of action. He would not blindly follow orders. Instead, he would think freely and carry out orders instead of simply obeying orders
Uh, no. The Germans surrendered on the Western Front in WWI because the presence of the Dough Boys showed that America was finally serious. They weren't afraid of the Dough Boys. The Krauts could've easily dealt with them. The Germans were afraid of what was potentially behind them. Artillery, and airplanes, and mechanized warfare on a scale the world had never seen.

Logistics, organization, and technology are on the side of the professionals. Resistance to that will be sporadic and weak with hit and runs where the enemy is weakest. You’re looking at a long, bloody conflict, probably akin to the Irish and Britain.

Going back to my days as a grunt (88-2004, with a break in service in the 1990s), we used to have a standard that was set, in each of our units. Minimum score of 225 on the PT tests, with a MINIMUM of 75% in each category. Our unit routinely had to meet the "fit to fight" standards at the time, which, as I recall, was 70% minimum in each PT category. If you didnt meet the standard, you had fat camp at the end of the day. We also did weekly ruck marches every friday, up to 8 miles, with a monthly 15 miler. Being short of stature, I HATED those, as I was constantly jogging. Our PT sessions were pretty good though. Our CO was ex SF, and our 1SG was ex ranger batt, so our PT was pretty varied and interesting. We did things like HMMWV pulls, cart races, man down drills, gun range runs, etc.
These days, I am old, with bad knees, bad attitude, and partly deaf. I kinda miss those younger days....
Except monday morning drunk runs. Those sucked.

Also you have to think about you're gear as a minute man vs military. When I first got to the Marine school of Infantry we were still using the old ALICE pack and LBV etc. Then they started giving us the new gear and with the new gear a repair kit. The ALICE gear I was using was very old and beat up, but was still serviceable. The new gear was designed to be light weight and the material was thinner to accomplish this. There was a lot of plastic used in the new gear. We started seeing a lot of failures. A lot of times after one deployment you had a lot of gear you had to get swapped out. That leads me to my point. Don't buy the Gucci gear just because it's cool. You need to make sure you get gear that will last years, because eventually you will not have eBay, Amazon, etc. to order from. You also need to learn to sew, by hand and machine.
Your service is nothing compared to what's going on in Eastern Europe. Get office your high horse "experienced veteran" or whatever you called yourself

I can help train younger troops, handle supply & transportation, organize, go take a look around town, communications, security around base/camp....somebody's gotta do the cooking, right?
I can still do those things that insure the team's success. And as you know, it takes a shit-ton of support to keep people operating in the field.
Just because you're not fit for active combat, doesn't mean you're not fit to serve.

Deployed back to back with the guard in 03-05 to bagdad we never had support but we were used to it we had enough civilian backgrounds we could accomplish anything as a unit unlike the professional military. I don't care if you think less of my service because I saw what we did day in and day out with nothing, in a fob the 82nd took over and lost control of the area we had in sadar city that the guard controlled through the first election.
I contracted in Iraq and could easily see the difference between the Guard and the regular army. The Guard was usually way more down to earth and much more competent at problem-solving.

I concur with this entire video. I did not fight my medical retirement from Iraq because i didn't want to be that broke-dick SSG holding a spot up for a perfectly fit soldier. I can still think like a 12B, but i can't perform like one should. In a MM situation, I am more than happy to do Logistics or Commo. I've actually thought about this quite a bit. You're right, meritocracy wins. We have to face reality. We are what we are, not what we were. But it's not as linear as you make it sound. Does Randal want someone that doesn't know shit next to him just because he can keep up? Or does he want someone a little slower and older who can give a sitrep, a target indication, whose personal admin in the field doesn't leave a breadcrumb trail to the location, or whose personal skills allow him to avoid becoming a weather casualty? I know what I'd prefer. Ultimately, it's mission-dependent. But in most cases, we'll need as many guns in the fight as possible because we'll always be the underdog.
As a former infantryman in the Corps--- i like your perspective--- we had dudes who didnt belong in a rifle platoon either. I was battalion level njpd for fucking them up. Oh well

We haven't won a war in almost 80yrs. And even then -- The Soviets did most of the killing of nazis. Professional soldiers follow training and doctrine. As a result, the US Army is always following what failed in the last war. They're still running units through mock Iraqi villages at 29 Palms today!!! While in Ukraine, we see drones being used even down at the platoon and squad element, mk 19 -type weapons mounted on ATVs, etc., etc.

I'm an old grunt. Almost 60. I can still outhump most guys 1/3 my age. I dryfire daily, train to MEUSOC timed and scored standards for carbine and pistol weekly. Now, I can't go balls to the wall more than a few days before I need my recovery time. I'vehad three spinal surgeries. But I can still outperform 98% of guys 1/3 my age. That's pretty disgusting, really. I mean, I'm literally 100% physically disabled, can walk but can't feel my feet and legs... but am still more of a warrior than these young guys. WTH?
The Soviets did most of the killing because that is where all the Germans were. On the western end there was just a skeleton crew. The Soviets just used human wave attacks because they so greatly outnumbered the Germans. The Germans inflicted insane casualties on them, the ratio is ridiculous they killed over 20 million Soviets. I wouldn't give the Soviets too much credit for that. Commies don't care about their people or their troops. They are also lucky that the west convinced Japan not to attack Russia. If the Japs had attacked Russia at the same time as the Germans, it would have been over for the Soviets, no doubt.

Yeah, I'm a veteran, too. I worked with indigenous forces in Afghanistan, including militia-type groups. One thing you misunderstand about the strength of militia is that they _won't_ leave a man behind. That was for a number of reasons, one of which which is OPSEC. That guy knows where your shit is. There's also the trust factor; a guy will do anything for you when he knows you'll do anything for him. Do a better job of screening and work distribution. That little hardass bit there about _your_ team was completely unnecessary and just an ego rant. It was poor leadership, too. You want to improve somebody? Show them and work with them. Or don't associate with them if you don't have the leadership skills to make him or her better.

How good of shape should I be in?? I'm 56 years old, 5'8" and about 205 pounds. Last July my my 10k time was 1 hour and 5 minutes. I load hay in my 4x4 truck every day to feed cattle. I strongly disagree with the cutthroat attitude of leaving a man behind. The saying is more than taking care of the weakest link, it’s a statement of loyalty to your comrades that you will never fail them in desperate need regardless of situation. A team of studs with an attitude like that would be useless and everyone would apply that mindset to other aspects. Going gets tough? Well why die, let’s just fucking desert
I used to routinely run a private cadet corps/JROTC as opfor against NG, reserve units, DEA going overseas and even SF and we made them better by being aggressive and innovative. We were the spirit of the militia. Our honorary colonel in chief was Col. Aaron Bank (look it up if you don't know your military history). I even have a certificate making me an honorary member of 2/5th SF. I grant you all that was said but ultimately victory comes from motivation.
Great video! There's too many people out there that buy Gucci gear and way over estimate thier true combat readiness. You've got to be brutally honest with yourself and hold yourself accountable to reality. Example: I'm a 58 year old vet that is fit in every aspect except arthritic knees. I had to come to terms with the fact I can't go out on an op. My new role would be a support role such as transportation to the infil point and to be there for exfil. That's as close to a field op that I'm gonna get. Out side of that I can fulfill whatever support and logistic roles are needed that fit within my skill sets or abilities and I'm good with that. Sh!t, If I have to dig latrines or fighting positions I'll do it.... I won't like it, but I'll do it. Alot of dudes don't realize that most of war fighting doesn't involve shooting. It's lot of setting up camps, constantly improving your position, tearing it all down and moving. Rinse and repeat. You've got to play your position. Everyone can't be the quarterback, but the team won't finish the game without the water boy. Nuff said.
I prefer a padded sling for any longer than an hour. And a 3x magnifier is pointless. 5x is much better. Better gear makes you a better fighter.

Purely hypothetical, but knowledge of professional tactics and stratagems. This is not to emulate but to be able to anticipate. Michael Collins fought professional soldiers straight from four years of combat in WW1. Mr. Collins had no tanks, artillery, or such. His squad had handguns. They invented tactics which drained the world power. Ahmed Jibril of the GC-PFLP was able to fight even the IDF Sayaret units. So one must not try to be what they are not, but become what they need to be.
