Today on Valve News Network, we take a look at Portal Reloaded, a community mod aiming to add a third Portal to the Portal gun, this one allowing the user to travel through the fourth dimension, time. - Ігри
This isn’t “The community’s Portal 3”. To call it that puts quite a large amount of pressure on the single creator and developer, as well as raising the expectations of the community to an unreasonable level. What it does is expand on existing mechanics in an interesting way, not become the successor of a wildly successful game created by a paid team at a large corporation.
I don't understand your logic, but I can understand how this raises expectations. if you can, please help me understand your logic more.
(This means put it into stupid terms my brain doesn't work to good.)
@@momomocronx1938 This wont ever live up to the expectations that will be set by calling it "portal 3", this video is actively detrimental to the project because it sets people up for something that they wont be getting.
yas there also way more project that could be ''The Community's Portal 3'' like ''Portal Stories: Mel'' or the upcoming ''destroyed aperture'' this video is just again clickbait and one of the many reason i dont like this channel
It's more like a portal 2 expansion than portal 3 if all it adds is one new mechanic

Portal Stories: Mel is a free insanely polished, custom (and super funny voice acting) mod etc. that would qualify as a paid DLC.

There’s also another community project for portal 2 being worked on right now, portal 2 community edition, which reimplements unused features like adhesion gen, the paint gun, and schrodinger’s cube, as well as being able to change the physics and movement of the game back to be more reminiscent of half life 2 and portal 1, really awesome how much is happening with portal 2 nowadays
And it's also remastering the graphics and re-doing the Puzzle maker (they have an engine license and source code access btw)

Yeah, really hyped for that. I found out about that mod through the developer wiki: it actually talks about Community Edition as if it were actually an official version which really speaks to how big of a deal this will be.
I hope they make a mod where Cave Johnson was originally the antagonist. I've heard that they just remade Portal 1 because of the community's backlash on a new antagonist

even if we figure out the programming, we'll never find anyone willing to invest millions of dollars for servers for a decade old franchise unless they're really passionate
if it does come out, it'll most likely just be TF2 but without multiplayer / bad multiplayer, or just be TF2 but offline training exclusive

Calling Portal Stories: Mel, Portal 2: Abyss, and Portal 2: Desolation "High budget" is completely wrong, these games are ZERO budget. i am/was a developer for Mel and Desolation and these are both VOLUNTEER PROJECTS, as is Abyss.
Also, this little map pack is hardly a successor to Portal 2, and I am aware that as an outsider to the portal mapping community you do not realize this. This coverage is INCREDIBLY inaccurate, and I do not think that you are reporting on this type of thing without biases towards the developer that has given you a pre-release copy in order to boost their own publicity. I suggest everyone reading these comments to go look at the moddb page for portal 2, and take a look at all the new upcoming mods rather than to take this video at face value.
The mod looks very interesting, but it is not much that community maps before it havent already done, and it is only being picked up by VNN because he has a copy of it. Otherwise, the tremendous amount of high quality portal mods/maps with unique elements reviewed by VNN is very sparse.

@@vendybirdsvadl7472 i was a dev, but not one of the main ones, i was just kinda general support for the main team and did some prop retexturing. i do know a decent bit about the inner workings of dev on it because of that, though
I loved the Mel story, it was so well done. I first loaded up the tram scene in old aperture and it just felt like a true Valve title. Well done :)
I need to play more mods for Portal 2, some of them look incredible. A shame Tyler is blanatly mischaracterising the community for sick clicks.
Tyler, please don't refer to this as "The Community's Portal 3". For one, this is a result of a lot of hard work from a developer who actually has a name. Jannis deserves to have their name on their work, not co-opted by you for some nebulous 'community'. Secondly, don't place unrealistic expectations on an interesting puzzle mod by hyping it up to be some sort of Portal 3. It isn't that, and it isn't intending to be.
FACTS. I understand it brings more attention to call this video "The Community's Portal 3" but it's clear how obviously Tyler is trying to use this game to bring excitment and attention to his own channel, and not the developer. It's very unflattering.

@norcobick Valve don't make these videos. But yeah, I agree. I don't think he's taking *credit* for the game, but he's definitely claiming it for "the community" (which he sees himself as something of a standard-bearer for).

I’ve stated many times that Portal 2 is my favourite game of all time. I first played it in 2014-2015 when I was 9. This game made me realise that games aren’t things to be played as fast as possible then forgotten. This game introduced me to lore, character development, betrayal and VALVe themselves. I scoured the internet for every single thing about the game I could discover. I couldn’t wait for a Portal 3 and while I didn’t and still don’t truly believe it will ever happen, I can still hope.
I guess Tyler just missed the 5 or 6 Portal campaign projects that came out years ago

I don't really trust VNN with coverage of Portal mods really. He never seemed way too interested towards Portal as a game. He seems more focused on the development aspects of the game and not what the game has established. "This mod is essentially Portal 3/Portal 1 Reloaded" Sorry but it isn't. it's a mod, and will always be a mod unless Valve says so. They should never try to be something they can't be. In addition to that, the video felt like he was shoving two portal mods (Desolation and Abyss) under the bus. A while back he also put out a tweet towards another portal mod (Destroyed Aperture) that felt like he was trying to shove it under the bus. His Source 2/Half-Life coverage is nice, his videos about the development of Portal over time are also nice, but not when it comes to things like this.
SP2G 50000 tbh some mods could pass as their own game if they weren't dependent on the main game. (Sorry if my meaning isn't clear)

To be fair, Black Mesa started as a mod, became a full game in its own right (with Valve’s blessing), and is now even listed on the “Half-Life franchise” Steam store page, a privilege that hasn’t been given to any other Half-Life mode/fangames sold on Steam (sorry Hunt Down the Freeman). For that reason, I feel like it’s safe to consider Black Mesa an official game, just with the same asterisk we give the Gearbox games in regards to storyline canon status (canon until something made by Valve directly contradicts it).
Unless or until Valve gives another project that same treatment, they should be considered just another fan work, even in cases where the result is incredibly high quality.

Why does every mod have to be the new "Portal 3"? This is what happened with Portal Stories: Mel, as well as Aperture Tag. I dont understand why mods can't just be their own things instead of having to live with the pressure to live up to a corporations potential. As a Mod make i can say with certainty that I dont want my mod to be "Portal 3". Also next time, maybe do a little research before make a video.
due to theing being very big i would not even like to call it a mod, they are more close to being its own separate game then a simple small modification.

Can you name them please? Provided they are promising. I'm always interested in good mod projects but there aren't too many for Portal 2. Regarding upcoming projects I'm waiting for Destroyed Aperture and Portal: Revolution, but that's about it with the ones I've heard of...

If anything, Portal Stories: Mel is the communities "Portal: 3". Looking forward to this mod, but we already have a third game that even the makers of Portal consider cannon, despite it being fan made.
I’ve been working on a portal 3 story here is what I have wrote so far
Chapter 1: (this takes place after the ending of portal 2) glados isn’t done with testing the field was a trap and the fake screens fall down glitching as the fall, there’s one locked door and a button. chell (idk how to spell her name) uses the rusty cube and takes the elevator back down to the first test. Glados would welcome you back in a evil manner and says to make sure you will die this time. after the first five tests you get the blue portal gun after five more test you get the standard portal gun and go down the lift.
Chapter 2: glados: well seeing how you enjoy these tests so much we made a paint device for the portal gun. You get the paint device and after getting use to the blue and orange paint the purple paint is introduced. During test 16 the power cuts off then a wall opens up a male voice tells you to come here as you walk through the wall closes and an actual person is there he greets him self and tells you to follow him and you do. He tells you glados’ back story and how she created this place, turns out he has been writing on the walls that are hidden after a short time he sends you back to the test as the power goes back on after the last 4 test you go down a lift.
Chapter 3: while going down the lift it suddenly stops glados takes notice of this and goes to fix it. The male stranger breaks a wall open to help you escape glados for a while. as he helps you out. the lift falls at extreme speeds glados sees you alive with him and sets the alarms off. And deploys turrets after you that CAN WALK, they chase you down through the halls crawling on the walls like a spider until the man cuts them off by destroying the floor sending them to a bottomless pit, glados now pissed off threatens you to get back to testing or terrible things will happen later on. Of course you don’t then a claw grabs you and puts you in a room, in the middle of the floor a hyper turret awaits you. The man informs you that he will spawn a missile turret to hit the hyper turret (count this as a boss fight).after destroying the hyper turret your dropped into a testing chamber to continue testing.
Chapter 4: glados: seeing you try to escape me made me remember that time you tried to escape me with that LITTLE IDIOT but you should continue testing. In test 25 a pipe is transporting cubes and it’s broken glados tells you to not fall in while walking by it the thing sucks you right in and starts transporting you to somewhere random. While in the tube you see glados for the first time in ages but she see’s you as well. Your dropped off at a storage room where glados can’t see you or talk to you you meet the stranger eventually and informs you that glados has a control panel in her room so he tells you that once she’s distracted he can take control of her and send you to the real surface, you agree to his plan. After getting through the storage rooms you and the man find the core production area and accidentally reactive it then go through the turret storage and destroy all the turrets. The man tells there’s a room that leads to glados and you spread out. When you enter her room glados is furious that you made it to her again she grabs you by the hand and tosses your portal gun aside then she stops and drops you to the ground you hear the mans voice and tells you the plan was a success and calls the elevator when you enter he tells you thank for being with him and laughs to himself that laughing is cut short as he pulls you back down and gets close. “You think I will you go that easily well let me tell you something you aren’t leaving yet I’ve done so much for you I’ve saved your life twice I helped create glados AND AS A RESULT MY FRIENDS AND CO WORKERS DIED so I’m afraid that your going down to the oldest point in appature science good luck down there” and the elevator breaks apart sending you below.
Chapter 5: (cutscene) after falling for a while you some how grab onto a ledge and climb up and go through a door. After walking through a office for a bit. a stray core bumps into you he calls him self the assistant core he takes you through the office and gives your portal gun saying it just fell down here and he picked it up for safe keeping. he takes you to a lift and says good luck. You go through 10 tests before reaching a computer office. A computer shows a video of glados killing her creators and the man escaping before the video ends. During test 15 a red jell is introduced it carries the abilities of the blue and orange jells. Test chamber 25 has you enter a room and drop down. A turret attached to a drone flies in and starts deploying bombs (boss fight) the way this fight works is you supposed to use the orange jell to launch the bombs back at the drone every time it’s hit sprinklers remove the jell and a few missiles are launched at you when the drone is destroyed you move on. The assistant core congratulates you and offers to come with you to the modern day aperture science and he follows you into the elevator.
Chapter 6: after reaching the modern day aperture the man is angry to see you back so soon and decides to put you through in total 30 tests. The assistant core is able to tag along with you for most of the tests. Test 5 half way through the test a wall explodes destroying everything around the blast then a spike wall comes rushing through destroying everything it touches the assistant core tells you that the place is slowly being broken apart and destroyed. During test 10 the man sabotages a button to drop you into a room with a hyper turret inside and as a last ditch effort to kill you there the hyper turret explodes it’s main frame. Test 15 a spike wall launches at you when stepping on a launch pad nearly hitting you “sorry about that the things are out of control”. When you finish the test the assistant core tells you that the man can be stopped by putting cores on glaDos thus disabling her so you can get her back in charge.
Chapter 7: coming soon
Portal Stories: Mel is effectively Portal 3

I feel like the addition of "time travel" deserves something more than a simple "reloaded" subtitle, but that's just me.
I was thinking the same thing lol, it needs something clever and more in tune with portal's style of writting but I really can't come up with anything myself.
Well I'm sure there's enough time for that to change...

looks amazing but im REALLY worried that videos like this will raise expectations to a level even valve cant achieve. i think you know as much as i do how much weight "portal 3" has to the internet and to give a game created by a single dev that title is downright irresponsible. this is a free mod created for fun. its not portal 3 and thats a good thing.

I've played a few like these. But telling me this is community portal 3 gives hopes for a story line, we'll see though
it's not Portal 3 and it's not the community's Portal 3. It's a cool looking mod for sure, and I think the concept would have potential if Valve used it for a follow up to Portal 2, but this is blatant clickbait and feels disingenuous to both Portal fans and the developer, although apparently the dev gave Tyler a pre-release copy to boost publicity for the game sooooo >:(

@@CizorGG It puts a lot of pressure on the mod's creators by announcing it to the community as Portal 3, while ignoring many other mods that could run for that title (Portal Stories Mel, Aperture Tag, Thinking with Time Machine, Destroyed Aperture, etc).
Also, this is just a small mappack consisting of 25 test chambers, calling it a new game is ridiculous.

@@chargus Plus 6 advanced chambers, plus 18 challenges with 3 ranks each (6 of which, the steps challenges, are pretty hard to beat).
And besides, no, I wouldn't really consider Portal 1 a full-fledged game. It's still a game, but more of an afterthought added to the Orange Box.
@@tragedyplustime8271 The challenges are not different from the game at all, only a slightly different way to play 6 levels, i would more so say that there are really 6 that actually change anything, which are the advanced, so 21 maps + the 6 extra, so 27 maps. thats 2 more than reloaded, so why not call it a game, maybe not full fledged, but i would still call it a game, this is speculation, but i still think that is has a very strong chance of being between portal 1 and 2

I was just looking if something changed with information about portal 3 and came across here on 19th April I'm definitely playing this mod
I remember when a concept like this was first posted on the workshop. There wasn't anything to do on the map then, but I instantly fell in love with it. I can't wait for this project!
First Portal Stories: Mel, and now this? Mega Pog for Portal fans.
Honestly I don’t know how to feel about this. This third portal could be amazing. The implantation is really impressive, it being a square is very cleaver along with its contrasting color. But also it seems like it might be a bit gimmicky. Sure what we say is probably very early stage stuff but it was a lot of very simple puzzles. I have a hard time imaging how things like lasers and funnels and gel would work with this mechanic without just being a portal game where you have 2 somewhat rooms to navigate. And if all those portal 2 mechanics aren’t in it I would call that, personally, a step backwards.
More isn’t always better but portal 2 introduces a lot of concepts but all of them work together very well and were used in a verity of interesting ways. If your replaced all of that with 1 mechanic I don’t know it that can hold my interest alone for 25 levels.

the interesting thing is what looks like the past is the future and vice versa because in the future it is overgrown with plants and destroyed, but you would expect the clean section to be the future

I really dislike when portal or half life mods are named as "3" it puts the expectations way too high. Even with portal stories mel, its amazing but would I call it portal 3? Definitely not! These are mods, full stop.
I remember playing a map that had this time travel mechanic in it. Excited to give it a go.
Also if you want to see a game with portals and time travel that works in small stable loops, check out Gateways, a somewhat small portal-inspired 2d game that not only has some really good puzzles, but also new and creative portal guns.

Theres actually many things like this in the workshop, although when you move the cube in the past it doesnt move the cube in the future

one thing I wish they do is give the ability for custom test chambers in-game with the steam workshop as Thinking with the Time Machine does.

I think time travel is probably the next logical step for the Portal series, so this is great to see.

My brain is about to explode with this new sick portal.
An extra 3rd portal like this can cause some issues that hopefully the developer has addressed in some way. Biggest probably being duplicating cubes infinitely if you can pull stuff through the green portal and there are probably other ones out there that can cause problems
Wow. This sounds soo good. Btw, a little idea. It's cool that the dev added light for the portals. But please, give it a little fade-in effect when the portal being summoned. They probably did that, but if they don't, please! It would make the the game more polished

Sounds like inspired from Darksiders.
Darksiders has same stuff. Darksiders did same with 1st and 2nd game, later on you can upgrade it to travel through time

im guessing you would press middle mouse button / L3 or R3 for the 3rd portal if you can shoot it
so basically, the old cube is the new cube, because you move the official cube around you actually change the future because you moved that cube, so if you switch forward, the cube is still there, but of course, this doesn't work backwards!
