- Recycling is a scam. Most of the recycled products dont actually make it into new bottles, they are just shipped off to china where they are thrown into a landfill or dumped into the ocean. The world is actually a sad place. a new study shows that recycling is actually a scam and most bottles arent even recycled. Plastic recycling has never been good and has never worked, its always been cheaper to make new plastic bottles than it is to make old plastic bottles into new ones.

Aluminum is actually one of the few materials that is 100% recyclable
This is false. it is just that to produce Aluminum from bauxite is so expensive that recycling is so much more affordable.

@SilverMe2004 Most plastics that are labeled as recyclable in the U.S. simply aren't. Glass bottles were more expensive, but more popular, so to help boost the sales of plastic bottles (cheaper), they started to put recycling labels on them, even though they weren't

I'm studying polymer science and I can tell you that bottles definitely can and are being recycled. Recycled plastic is often cheaper than fresh plastic, from a manufacturer's standpoint. The thing is, the more time a given piece of plastic is recycled, the worse its properties become. It melts easier, it's not as durable, it might even break down.
Point is, we can't keep recycling the same piece of plastic forever.
There are just a few little and mostly unknown companies that actually recycle those bottles. Sadly the bigger companies don’t do that. 😔

Plastic is cheap, and you can just dispose of them in a landfill, they will decompose after a really long time. Or throw them in some abandoned mine.
That may be the case in the US but i visited 2 plants in Europe (plastic bottle recycle plant in NL & plastic bottle downcycle plant in BE) The NL plant slices the bottles to small slivers which get melted into granulate for new plastic products , where the BE plant makes them into the basic ingredients for Food trays , Fleece textiles & home insulation.
Doesn't stop me from putting it in the same bucket as the trash.
The sad part is that it actually is. It's just more expensive to recycle it than to make it new and burn the old.
Just remember we live in a world where money comes 1st. Anything else is 2nd. So if someone says it can't be done, it's because no one wants to spend the money on it
nah money to companies are important, because if they actually lose all the money and taxes and debt come around and guess what, they don’t have enough ok boy shut down time.
There's some company (French I think) that puts plastic digesting enzymes in their plastic, that then degrades within months.
That's a pretty cool solution if you ask me, it doesn't require anyone to change their behavior and preserves existing supply chains.
does it wrok for all types of plastic? because you cant recycle different types of plastic together, and how much does it cost, bc you know corporations wont do anything expensive lmao
@@alexsnowball I think they are doing PLA at the moment. It's just polymerized lactide, which is perfectly natural and PLA just decomposes into water and CO2 if you burn it.
Technically you can do that for all plastics if you can find the right enzyme for it, and there are already very many known ones for many different types of plastic. Some more commercially viable than others. Although I'm not an expert.
But some plastics degrade into harmful substances that wouldn't be ideal if it pollutes the natural world. Like PVC is full of chlorine and some have fluorine and others or dangerous fillers.
Obviously some of these elements already exist in the natural world, but not necessarily in the compounds these plastics break down into. I know that these plastics cause issues recycling plastics through pyrolysis (heating in absence of oxygen to break them back down into "crude oil").
In theory you could design enzymes that break these plastics down in a safe way, but that's probably not realistic near term.
I don't think cost is an issue as long as people are willing to pay for it. And as far as I'm aware these enzymes can be produced relatively cheaply.
Plus I can easily see regulators making this mandatory, especially in the EU.
And some plastics will always be around for a long time since that's what they are needed for, you wouldn't want your breaker box composting in half a year. But this makes a lot of sense for single use plastics.
and then when people stop recycling they blame it on us DUDE
Uh- i didn't know where you got that info but my parents have recycling business and all the plastic bottles is turn back into little pieces of plastic which will be used to make new plastic in lower quality..

You're almost right actually most of our (America) plastic is loaded onto shipping containers and shipped to China and they "take care of it" which usually means exactly what op said they burn it they dump it etc, China is responsible for most of the trash in the ocean but we are definitely enabling/encouraging that behavior.
Moment of silence for your education.
Plastic is recyclable. When sorted correctly, and when there is a recycling plant available. Recycling is expensive and contaminants (wrong sorts of plastics) in the wrong bin can mean the whole lot goes in to landfill. But Authorities love to see the stats on paper about how much plastic they have stopped going in to landfill. It looks good on paper and someone somewhere gets a big bonus in their pay for reaching a target. It's still cheaper to use new plastic from petroleum. Recycling is still energy intensive and relies on oil or coal to fuel the plant. It would be better for the environment if we used steel bottles (cared for they can be passed down through generations and are easier to recycle) for drinks, and use hemp, reeds or bamboo for baskets, bags or clothing. We are running out of space to grow trees since we like to build houses where trees grow, so even paper is becoming expensive. Cotton for clothing is time, water and production expensive. Bamboo or reeds use less water and grow quicker. Personally I'm not sure about production.
They told us that plastic would degrade in 500 years! I wanna go in the time machine they used, get next weekends lottery numbers! It wasn't just America that was lied to!

I’ve been throwing my plastic in the trash, and several times I’ve got rebuked for that. Looks like I was right all along
Wasn't big corporations that said plastic recycling was real. It was government and environistas.
Exactly, less than 10% of the world's plastic is actually recyclable, not to mention plastic can only be recycled about 2 to 3 times before it's completely useless, so even if you do recycle plastic it will eventually end up as waste anyways, also most companies don't even try to recycle because it requires a lot more time, money, and manpower to recycle than it does to make more plastic and don't even get me started on the process of recycling, the process of recycling can actually be more harmful to the environment than the plastic itself, the only reason recycling has been shoved down the throats of the American public for years is because plastic companies create recycling adds, the reason they did this is because people were furious with them because plastic is harmful to the planet and takes over 500 years to decompose, but if people thought there was an easy solution to the problem then they would no longer be mad at plastic companies and it would shift the attention of the general public off of them, they even tricked people into thinking most plastic is actually recyclable when it is not, the companies who manufacture plastic used certain symbols in order to identify the trype of plasic items are made out of, but they made the symbol ( or the resign identification code) look exactly like the recycle symbol to make people think they could recycle their plastic when in reality it was not recyclable.
The biggest myth of all is that we are running out of refuse space! We have plenty of room for all our garbage!
