      I made the mistake of calling the alpe the highest mountain last year, so had to stick with it for this year 🤣

    @marcus_velo_9970 Рік тому

    well done, that's a significant improvement, there's no tougher test on zwift; now to go sub-60 its about repeatability of power at a lower heart rate zone. if you can make the same power at a lower heart rate then your fatigue will decrease over time and you'll have more 'freshness' to a point per segment - look at your stats you average heart rate was higher, should have been the same or lower (only by a bit). How to achieve? do longer group rides in z2/3 (seems counter intuitive to smashing it in a race). however - that way you''ll push your power up for less effort - by having a broader zone 2-3 to work in, this should mean same power for less effort, and for power output you can hold watts for longer without fatiguing. hence repeatability. Kinetic Cycle Coaching has some good z2 discussion on it. good work buddy.

  • @dtrjones
    @dtrjones Рік тому

    Wow that was quite the effort! You beat my best time of 84 minutes by 18 minutes. Last time I did the Alpe though I did it in 107 minutes during the grueling Uber Pretzel...

    Congratulations. Super ride. You've sure come a long way in a year. - it'll be interesting to watch your progress through another year. (And since the clock stopped at 66:00.45, less than half a second over, you can legitimately round it off to 66:00 - even though Strava rounds it up to 66:01)

    • @JMower
      @JMower  Рік тому

      hahah definitely agree with rounding down!
      If I can lose another 5kg then the 60 minutes shouldn't be too hard! 10kg and I could even be looking at perhaps 55mins!!

    • @ChrisP978
      @ChrisP978 Рік тому

      @@JMower I think they say 3.2 Wkg is the mark for sub 60 minute and that's what I had to hold to get 59 minutes. Although that was before I unlocked the lighter bike and wheels so that might help a bit. So at 90 kg and 10W power bump it seems achievable.
      Well done, great progress in just a year!

  • @kerpow212
    @kerpow212 Рік тому

    Great effort. The amount of power you need to put out at that weight is considerable. I did the same, 80mins first time at 90kg and got down to sub-60 mins at 85kg. Lose more weight, it will be easier! Also, you should have previous data to compare with. Knowing that you are beating your previous effort on each section is a massive morale boost. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be posting a sub 60 later this year.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  Рік тому

      Definitely hoping to get the weight off long term, if I could get down to about 80kg and keep the same power I would be a solid B rider`!

  • @danielhebert3528
    @danielhebert3528 Рік тому +2

    So here's a little tip for you on conquering Alpe de Zwift. If you were to actually climb this beast in real life you would go with a very easy group set that would allow to spin faster and not grind and kill your legs. So, what I do, whenever I climb APZ, I lower the trainer difficulty which in essence gives you more easy gears to spin and not grind.

    • @JMower
      @JMower  Рік тому

      Luckily I had a 34 small chainring and 34 on the back, so for most of it I could spin quite easily. Only when the gradients get to around 12%+ do I feel the need to lower the trainer difficulty

    • @lee-cycling
      @lee-cycling Рік тому

      I think a lot of that stuff is personal preference. I did my best Alpe time with a 52/36 and 11-28 and 100% trainer difficulty. Had to grind the whole way, but I seem to find that ok.
      A good strategy for the Alpe is to do a negative split. You need to hold 3.2wk to go sub hour on it. So do the first half a bit under, like 3wk, then on the second half, or even a little later, bring the power up.

  • @geoffbadger9597

    Great ride. Did you have the lightest bike and wheel option at your disposal? Huge improvements. Swift calculator works well and I would guess that if you lost another stone and kept your power the same you will be under 60. Keep it going. All the best.

  • @felixwolff8382
    @felixwolff8382 Рік тому

    Strong effort. Your Ftp might even be slightly higher than 270 judging by the amount of red in the graph you were able to sustain over a 60min effort. I know it make for a better yt title but the alpe is not the tallest mountain on zwift. That would go to the Mont Ventoux replica. Nice to see how you progressed in the last 1-2 years. Keep it up💪

    • @JMower
      @JMower  Рік тому

      My guess of 270ftp was based on what my garmin said from an outdoor ride the week before. It was actually set at 260 in zwift and updated to 270 after this ride. I think most of the red would've been orange if it were set correctly!
      I've been meaning to try Mont Ventoux, but it doesn't have the corner breakdown like the alpe does, so it would be such a boring ride... but eventually I'll get round to it 🤣

    Why do you eat during treshold effort? It doesn't help you at all, get enough carbs before the effort not during it, it can seriously mess up your performance as your intestines really have little blood supply since everything goes to your muscles.
