Test drive for demonstrational purposes in a 1998 Chevy Cheyenne 1500 short bed pickup truck with a 5 speed manual transmission.
All stock 4.3 Vortec V6 engine.
As you said the power on this truck is respectable given its the V6 model I would say it has exactly same horsepower Per each cylinder (compared to its v8 brothers of the time) and pretty much the same torque.
🤟
88-2000 actually people forget that. I have a 2000 obs dually 454 and a 89 Cheyenne 4.3 5speed
Its really beautiful, and it is a real truck
I have an '88 Cheyenne with the same v-6/5-speed combination. It is a good all-around truck, with pretty decent gas mileage (I used to get around 25 mpg on the freeway with conservative driving habits). But, like your plans, I would like to put in it an LS engine, with hopes of using the same transmission. I would probably stay with a 4.8 or 5.3 LS engine to be able to safely use the NV3500 tranny without destroying it. If you have any techical skills and experience , and it does not take much expertise, you can swap these engines as DIY projects. Plenty of U-tube video tutorials on doing this and many other LS swaps, available and cheap engines in the Pull-a-Part yards, and loads of after market parts to make most any swap possible. Many u-tubers claim to be able to do these swaps for under 1K $s. Good luck.
Ted Tolentino thanks! I really want to get a Ls Erod swap that way I can still smog it like normal.
Yeah ,got the same truck to ,got it 4 years back I am still working the truck, but your look a lot better then my .
Fantastic! OBS FTW
Very cool, clean truck. I have a 92 Scottsdale trim in dark gray. 5 speed, 4.3. I am looking to fixing a few driving issues and then move on to bodywork.
Nice !!
These or old truck to,they wear out Mosley all the bearings from the front to the back so easy on the old chevy don't go over 90 miles in hours, they good truck,🚚
Yes it is a nv3500, i have a 1990 GMC Sierra Sl with the 4.3l, it has the 5 speed
Yup nv3500 is what would come stock
In the earlier trucks (1988-1990) it was different. The transmissions look simialar, but the earlier ones had the 5lm60, or Getrag 290, which had 3 shift rails and a different imput shaft bearing compared to later models (1991-1998) nv3500, which had 1 shift rail and a different slave cylinder
@@mattconner8469 I have a 90 it has the 5lm60
All Chevy trucks of that generation could be had with a manual trans. On the 1500 series, standard was the NV3500 like this truck or the Getrag equivalent in 1993 and earlier models. Optional was the NV4500(1992 and later models) which was the HD version of the NV3500 that added a deep "granny" low and was standard on the 2500 and 3500 series trucks. Optinal on the pre 1992 models was the Saginaw 4 speed which was the predecessor of the NV4500.
Bubba J Thank you ! That’s great info !
So late to this vid but I have a 94’ stepside Chevy and it came stock with a Nv4500 but my pops swapped the engine with a 5.3 way back early 2000’s
That noise is most likely the shifter linkage rattling due to vibration from the clutch/engine
Mine did that. It was the throwout bearing.
That's your throw out bearing making that noise brother. You've probably have figured that out by now. I'd imagine its gave out
Yes I changed it out and now the sound is gone! 😄
Thanks for making video, very professionally made.Have a 98 GMC 4x4 regular cab, long bed v-6 with 5 speed, how rare is that?
I had a 5 speed 96 GMC 1500. Loved it. When I moved to Austin TX. I had to go back to an automatic as Austin is not ideal for a 5 speed.
Russ Haeber Nice! Too much traffic In Austin?
At times, but a majority of traffic lights and a lot of stop signs, etc. are either going up or down a hill. Feeder roads are hilly as well. Were I was prior was small town where all roads were flat. I didn't find it enjoyable anymore.
Speaking of manual transmissions, I miss the old 3 speed manual on the columns from back in the day which a lot of people called them "3 on the tree." I've seen a 1987 Chevy Silverado fleetside short bed with a 4.3 litre V6 & a 3 speed manual on the column coupled for sale & I wish I would've bought it & now I regret. It was one of those old square body pickups. The 4.3 litre V6s replaced the inline 6s in the Chevy & GMC fullsize pickups back in 1985 & 1987 was the last year for the 3 speed manual on the column.
Well done 👍👍👍🥇🇺🇸🤓🙋♀️
Called the 2400 rpm at 80! My 96 Burban is the same
These are awesome vehicles I’ve got a 96 Silverado does 80 at about 2000-2200 uphill
Like the truck
I have a 5.7 in mine but it's a 5 speed granny gear
So you have the nv 4500 like me. I have a 5.7l 3/4 4x4 5 speed nv 4500. Its built to tow
@@codydietrich4246 yes sir. But I changed axels from a 4:10 to a 3:73. Better millage and RPMs
@@sweettooth80 you bet. Mine came stock with 3.73 but an open diff... Eaton Locker coming soon. Electric locker for the front
@@codydietrich4246 that would be sweet I got a limited slip suprisingly. But I might go to 3:53 idk be good for millage but idk about towing
@@sweettooth80 I'm going to stick with the 3.73 it's still pretty decent for Towing. I'm currently watching videos on marine intake swaps. That way if you have fuel regulator issues so you can just change it or changing injectors individually. Plus it's a bonus there's nothing inside your intake plenum so it's 100% air flow for your engine.
I have a 93 Chevrolet k1500 single cab shortbed with a standard
I've got a 350 in front of my 5spd and first gear is almost unusable unless I'm going up hill with a full load in the bed. I might have to change the rearend gears to get full use
How did you go about the wiring harness I’m currently working on my truck I got a 5.7 with the nv3500
Did you have to get a custom harness made for it?
That’s the NV4500 trans with a 5.7
Mine is fairly decent, what, for an old mud truck made to my daily. It's got the NV3500 with a 350 in a '94 GMC SLE K1500 Z71, and it's geard pretty low, I'm out of first at 15 MPH usually. But, it's probably not as fast as it should be, what with near 300,000 showing. But I'm going to be putting a clutch in it tomorrow, though.
I have a clutch install video for nv3500 on my channel if your intrested
@@matthew1er Ha, nice, I bought the same brand clutch. I'll check it out, but I was going to try to disconnect the driveshafts and the cross member, and move it all about six inches back. Though how has that clutch treated you, out of curiosity?
@@sdusb1243 I’ve had my truck since 2001, I put a new clutch in 2007, used a sachs clutch kit - been great ever since no issues around 200k on the truck now
I’ve got a 5.0 5 speed manual v8 I love it
Hey
Would you be interested in selling
@@danielrobinson993 it’s a passed down truck, has a lot of sentimental value but if the price is right maybe
Ok can u send me some pics please whatapp 2425540108
@@danielrobinson993 i don’t have whatsapp but text on Instagram @_timoringo_
Mine use to scream at 5,700 rpm lol with the 5.7 350 tbi mine has nv4500
I have the same setup in a 2500 Cheyenne
Nice man I have a truck just identical to yours but mines red
I still see quite a bit of those fourth generation Chevrolet & GMC C/K series pickups on the roads today.
Yea true
I see one in my garage every day, haven’t driven it for about 10yrs
I have a cheyene 1995 5 speed v6 4.3 step side
I got the same exact truck you got 1998 Cheyenne mine‘s Vortech 5.0 L V8 automatic only 130 K miles I’m actually going to sell it dude I got the SS 454 style rims on it wit BF Goodrich radio T/As probably going to ask around 12 K if anybody’s interested
What long tube headers can work for a V8 LS swap? I have a 97 Sierra 4.3L with a NV3500 5speed....
I'm looking at a 1996 silverado 1500 and it is 5 speed manual but before I buy I can't find online where they sell engines or transmissions exactly for that model year and all in case worse comes to worse and I have to replace. What do I look for? I've Googled and came up nothing
Just look up auto dismantling in your area
I have a 99 with that same drivetrain, newer bodystyle - damn that truck gets very decent gas mileage
You cannot screw a new knob on that shifter, the threaded part is at the bottom, under the boot
Keep it in gear, unless you are stopped. Go from 2nd to 1st at about 5mph. Should be able to let the clutch out in 1st before you stop. Not to compression brake, but to stay in control
Ok
What year is this truck? Great series btw, looking to buy neighbors 95 5 speed 1500 truck with bad trans and your subsequent videos are very helpful
Mine is a 98, a 95 might have a slightly different transmission
Grandson has this truck lately it pops out of gear at highway speed 4th and 5th … why would it do this????
It probably needs new shifter assembly.. it's most likely just worn out.
How did you put your Sarape on your bench seat? Mine keeps falling off 😢
Beautiful truck man that’s in Vacaville I notice because of the Mexican meat market are used to work there on Brown Street
Yup! Thanks!
That sound you are hearing is most likely a clutch.. just make sure if you change it you do the fly wheel to
Comes as a kit
I have a 95 2wd 1500 with a 305 and a nv3500 5 speed mine is slow as shit
The 91 350 stick five. 7 L V8
Thanks brotha for the post!
I have an 89 Chevy ss350 it has 5.7 v8. 5 speed manual
Single cab?? What color??
Yeah single cab. It's gray with racing stripes
I have the SS red stripe 5 speed B&M short shifter a must. Drives like real muscle car.
@@johncunningham3202 mine has a hersh shifter or something like that. Yeah all these kids be trying to race cause I roll up with a loud truck with tinted windows poor things don't no my 32yr old truck can blow their doors off. Bahahaha
I have a 94 extended cab 5 speed over drive
What manual transmission and differential oil does it take? I have a Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup year 1995, 305 tbi 5.0-liter 8-cylinder engine, 238 thousand kilometers and I don't have the vehicle manual, they are the same models from 1988 to 1995
I believe it is Synchromesh for the transmission oil , I'm not to sure about the diff tho ..
Use the gm sychromesh, or penzzoil or royal purple synchromax
I’ll buy this truck off you, sir!
Sorry not for sale
I have one I will sell, it’s a ‘96 auto though
Where are you planning to get your LS?
I want to get a brand new one with cats (Erod) so i can still pass Cal smog . either jegs or GMperformance
I’m learning how to drive manual in this truck but do you have a way to downshift ?
Smokechop just rev-match when you down shift an it should be smooth
Thank you 🙏 kinda hard when it doesn’t show the rpm lol
Just bought a 1989 chevy 4x4 5speed
Sick !
U got a bad throb bearing I know I’m a year late but I had to comment that
Thanks yea I changed it out and problem solved
How reliable are these manual transmissions?
They are great. unless you are trying to run over 350hp it might not be a great choice
Thank you! I’m looking into getting a manual 93 1500 today’
What notice about this transmission you can't miss use ,I am thinking put my T 56,this truck you can't haul heavy stuff on it,for my truck trying make it last long enough it a good truck, my 2008 silverado didn't last long and it costs to much I don't like it.
The trans should be a NV3500
Is this near Roseville?
No that’s Vacaville
That’s on Brown Street I noticed it because I used to work there a Mexican meat market
I have a 97' 1500 v8 5 speed manual
shannon fitzgerald nice!
Put a Flowmaster Super 10 or 40 Series Original on it because it makes it sound like a v8
My 93 makes the same noise XD
lol do you have any idea what it could be ?
I’m gonna be replacing my clutch and pressure plate here soon so I’ll find out for sure
It also makes noise in 5th my uncle says it might be my pilot bering going out and at high rpm it just gets louder lol can’t really hear it though unless idle or 5th not completely sure thigh gonna have to wait
My 96 v6 5spd ext cab does same thing just put a new slave in it. However its a good truck thank God runs fine just that noise?
HENSON GARAGE I figured out that my barring was out in the bottom cluster gear in the rear of the transmission finally went out me and my brother replaced it with the whole kit for like 180 dollars
HENSON GARAGE and my throw out herring was also out that was the noise when I shift but the bearing issue was a constant noise when I hit the gas in 5th and it is a NV 3500 it goes out when the wrong oil is in it
By the way my 94 has 5.7 5 speed overdrive
I have v8 Manual transmission 5-7
So how the what's the fuel mileage now??
Mine gets about 30 mpg if I drive nice
It’s probably a Nv3500
Looks like a 98
Entero Real It is
Shit my 1993 5.7 v8 won’t go past 85
Dang lol
I found this trying to find anyone else that has the high rpm till complete stop problem. I have 96 4.3 5 speed.
Replaced both inner door handles
Cleaned air idle control valve
New fuel pump
New alternator and belt
New throttle position sensor
New coil
Simply opened the hood to fix the wiper not working problem
Each of these left me stranded lol
3 month of owning and 5k miles
You need a new vehicle speed sensor, small piece screws into the back of the trans, cheap part, simple install
Ticking noise is a bad throw out bearing
Yea I changed it out and it fixed it
Yeah ,got the same truck to ,got it 4 years back I am still working the truck, but your look a lot better then my .
