- The African Union estimates that about 70,000 skilled professionals emigrate from the continent each year. Africa, the world’s most youthful continent, has an estimated 10 to 12 million young people joining the labor force every year.
But the continent is only able to create about 3 million jobs annually. So what happens to the rest?
Many young Africans are moving to Europe and America for economic opportunities. On the other hand many European countries, like Germany, are welcoming this talent to meet their own shortages. It's estimated that the German labor market needs to grow by 400,000 workers per year. So to fill the gap, the government is reforming its immigration laws to attract foreign professionals, with the introduction of a "Blue-card."

Let's say the inability of politicians to not have a vision for the nation is the reason for guaranteed generational poverty.
The problem is that almost all countries in Africa focus on politics more than developing the economy, alleviate poverty, support job and entrepreneurship creation etc.
At least you're not Somalia, we are at least 50 years behind most african countries. I personally think it is time to balkanize somalia, meaning all 6 tribes who keep fighting one another get their own country, end of story. End the nightmare now.

The irony is the geopolitical expert who is stating that Africa is losing it's brightest minds is an African living and working in the US.
It’s always those type of people. They are telling skilled people to stay in a dysfunctional country while living in the developed world, with safety and privilege that comes with it.

They need to educate the masses, be in politics if necessary and lead their country towards prosperity. Since the educated are escaping hence these countries are being run by dishnst politicians. The developed world today has the safety and privilege because they worked hard for it in the past, unlike you they arent co ward escapees and didnt escape when their country needed them to build it.

But FYI there are countries like South korea, Singapore, Taiwan etc. which comes in the list of developed nations too and none of these were colonizers instead they were themselves colonies to outside powers until the end of WW2. Their development is very recent and you have a lot to learn from them. Even the west appreciates these nations and give them similar status for the tremendous growth these countries have shown just in the past few decades. After gaining independence, the citizens of these nations worked hard to build their country rather than complaining about their colonial past, finding excuses and escaping from their own countries like you, and hence their hardwork proved to be fruitful and soon they joined the leagues of developed nations. They built their nations from ground up. And if you look around you'll find more such examples. But instead runaways like you are busy complaining about past, finding excuses while looking for opportunities to escape out of your country by pushing your own country more into turmoil.

Why the 35 year old age limit? If Germany is desperate for professionals, lift that barrier to 50. I work with a team of professional developers, designers, project managers and business analysts whose ages range from 26 to 45. If that age limit was applied to our company, half the staff and 70% of the managers would be missing.
He mentioned that you only need to fulfill 3 out of 4 requirements. If you speak German, have a degree and 3 years of work experience, that is enough.
That is only one of the visa options, too. A company can still hire any foreign skilled worker via the regular blue card. There, the only requirement is that there is a job offer and the employee is skilled.
Germany is desperate for young people who can pay the taxes to support the social welfare system.
50 unfortunately is quite old. You will be retiring in 17 years, and then the welfare system will have to take care of you. It is possible that the state will spend more on your welfare than you contributed in your productive years.

Exactly. My South African girlfriend used to work in her home country energy sector, and the corruption there is insane. No wonder she went to Denmark to study and work here.

Whenever I hear this skill shortage brouhaha, I really scoff because I know too many foreigners like myself who did Bachelors, Masters and even PHD here in german universities and are currently unemployed. Some have even been forced to leave because their visas have run out and they can't get a job. They have made thousands and thousands of applications to companies that have bluntly refused to hire them. This is just unbelievable hypocrisy. Who are this people fooling for real?!

Most of my other foreign classmates have left the country and I hope that I can get a great job elsewhere and leave very soon as well. In my opinion, I believe that Germany is looking for university educated workers to fill really low-skilled positions and it just does not have enough guts to blatantly state this fact.
Moreso, I have read a lot of comments on several UA-cam videos from professionals who have risked migrating to Germany for work and I must say that a lot of those comments appear laced with regrets. A lot of these professionals seem stuck, perhaps because they do not want to admit that they made a mistake with their decision to move here or because they stayed too long that it seems quite defeating to start over elsewhere.

Germany's vision to attract skilled and highly qualified workers unfortunately does not align with what is actually happening at the immigration office. The German government should prioritize improving and simplifying procedures at the grassroots level, similar to Canada and Australia, going beyond the efforts in the Bundestag and media coverage. Otherwise, their policies will not have a meaningful impact.

Most professionals are never well appreciated in Africa. My friend and his colleagues worked in the IT department of a major oil company for over 4 years without promotion or salary increased despite the currency devaluation. Last year, they all resigned and moved to various western countries. Should you blame them for taking this step? Please relax the laws further and let more Africans relocate to Germany.
The brain drain is no joke. I’m originally from West Africa, I’m an Engineer, I have 3 siblings, 2 are Drs and the 3rd is a Computer Scientist, none of us is in our home country. We’re all based in Europe or America. Once we have kids, they’re going to be based here as well and by the 3rd generation, they’d probably lose their ties to my country of origin.

I lived in Germany for almost a year,I think German society is hard to integrate for foreigners. I think USA provides more opportunities
German and Polish girls like me the most lol then it's french. I don't like the lifestyle in America and it is a very dangerous country, everyone is walking around with guns. Dating life is chaotic, social life is mehhhhh but they have good sports, so if you're a sports guy you will love america.

@@wise5674 Dude i live in Canada and if you asked me to give up the free healthcare, relative (and these days it is dwindling) safety for the US, i would pack my bags right now and go. There's just way too many opportunities in the US. Nothing and I mean nothing is happening in Canada, if you're a new immigrants you get free money, free housing all at the expense of tax payers. After living in Germany for several years, I think the primary thing to solve is the issues related to "Bureaucracy"i.e. long waiting times with appointments, the cold behaviour inside, the shortage of staff and "No" to English are the real problems to resolve. The main thing is the govt has not much time left to fix these issues, statistics show how the population is aging and more and more young people are needed. Please take steps on immediate basis.

I understand the difficulty to learn German. The Germans rarely speak perfect German themselves. In the field of music there Aretha German songs called Lieder. Well, the great singers from the UK/USA all had to learn German and they tried their best. Still one hears the English way of pronouncing German. A few in Germany learned English, but how many learned German. There is still this British arrogance in the English language. In the long run, lets say 100 years English will become integrated into the German language which created already new English sounding words as handy for the mobile and showmaster for the person guiding a show. Well, in precise technical machinery and instruments I do not like so much the British approach of today with troy ounce and inch. What has become of the car and train industry in the UK/USA ? There is a tragic decline, Brexit was the start. There will be a day when England disappeared in the sea.
The lack of technically trained people in Germany will be solved by AI. In the near future the technical work is done by robots and we humans have time to do sports and pranayama and enjoy gardening etc.

If you want to live in Germany you should learn German. It is an absolute must. If you want to migrate to a new country and settle there permanently learning about the culture and learning the languages is a top priority.
Good luck with that. Germany sold out a long time ago. Same with Canada where I live. Inevitably what will happen is erosion of culture due to mass immigration. We're seeing it already in Canada.

There are many reasons that the foreign workers either do not want to come to Germany or do not want to stay here longer. 1) You can not bring your parents. 2) Almost impossible to find a specialist doctor when you need it with govt. health insurance. 3) The livable and normal apartments are very expensive and difficult to get. 4) Even if you speak and understand the standard German, people would not give up their local dialect, when talking to you. And, you are supposed to understand that too. . . . . . . . . This country used to have innovation, now it is running only by selling its old brand value. Most of the big German brands are just the sales companies, they buy from other small companies in the EU and sell them at higher price with their own brand name.

Am afraid that is true. Am from Nigeria. Am a medical doctor. I recently went back to practice in my country and now I see why people are leaving. Some people are forced to work more than 100hrs a week. And no one cares what happens to you. No matter how many times we complain and try to fix the situation, those in power just don't care.
It is a very pleasant solution for african politicians. But it is not OK. Africa need business, jobs and production. Not migration.
Our African governments are so hungry and greedy that their behaviors doesn't put them in the position to develop suitable environment for it's youth to thrive. The truth is they do not care about this brain drain because their sole purpose is to feed their bellies and their families only; it's the crave for a lavish lifestyles for their family.

Only when opportunity cost isn't considered. You still earn less in Germany than in the US, Canada, Nordic countries, Australia. In some years, more German doctors move abroad than graduate from local medical schools. For them, the opportunities are better abroad despite already being native German speakers.

I beg to differ on the perspective about leaving the African continent because of more or so call better opportunities else where. The continent of Africa in its current state has more opportunities than anywhere in the world. with many sectors being untapped by Africans produces numerous opportunities for the people to be pioneers in various sectors, to become industry leaders on the continent. Countries in Europe has already develop these sectors in there respective countries and offer high wages to attract African talents to serve in these sectors. Africans, instead of going to further advance the capacities in other countries that have played a part in the exploitation and underdevelopment of our beloved continent, focus your energies, talents and intelligence in creating the Afrika we all thirst and desperately long to see.

I'm British-Nigerian I was on Holiday in Berlin around October 2022 and I didn't enjoy the couple of days I was in Germany. I definitely wouldn't move there and I'm a British Citizen lol. I noticed White Germans were very cold to me when I approached them for direction, but I noticed their body language changed when they heard my accent then they relaxed a bit.
Many Nigerians have a strong build and can seem intimidating. They are also known to be tough and agressive.
So it was probably your appearance that might have intimidated them.

Even if the government welcome highly skilled workers, the society won't be welcoming (at least in my experience of living two years in Germany).

consider the language barrier that skilled workers face and to give students and young adults a chance to prove themselves in the workforce. By doing so, you can help bridge the gap between skilled workers and job opportunities, while also creating a more inclusive work environment.

The argument of Ehsan Vallizadeh that countries - here Germany - need 400,000 additional people per year is simply wrong. There is enough manpower in the countries, many companies are just looking for cheap labour and/or offer their trainees too few incentives. Especially care workers and other social professions provide the least incentives. This must change instead of filling them cheaply. And with increasing automation, autonomous driving, overall better artificial intelligence and "smart industry" etc., many professions become redundant and a lot of jobs will be "gone" very soon. In the meantime, there are very few people in the population of industrial nations, e.g. in Germany, who welcome such a mass of immigration. This leads to instability, loss of prosperity and massive political problems which divide the counties (e.g. emerging populist parties). The smart thing to do would be to support the countries of origin and strengthen them economically so that there is no reason to emigrate. Create prosperity over there instead of stealing brainpower.
I agree and whenever they talked about immigrants, high skill immigrants from other EU countries aren't mentioned. Young professionals from countries like Spain, Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria, Poland etc are migrating to Germany for better wages. But they're simply neglected

Germany has a severely prohibitive tax structure for workers. I'd never go there.
Some of my friends went to Berlin in 2018 for higher studies, he told me I saw mostly old people everywhere on streets, markets. They need young people no doubt but laws are strict and preventive enough to not to allow in workers. So saying is something and doing is something else.
I wouldn't move to Germany either, miserable country with miserable people.

I can share what the situation is like in the Philippines.
Language courses are free in certain job sectors, such as nursing and gastronomy. The costs are covered by the German employer who has to actively employ a job recruitment agency. That also fulfills the visa requirement for a job offer. Only big employers who feel the pressure of employee shortages and have the foresight to invest in foreign workers that may come after a year or two utilize that route.
For nursing, it is rather well-known. Nurses in hospitals discuss it with others as many of them have a friend or relative who has done exactly that. There's also a good presence online on social media and the recruitment websites.
They cover the costs for flights, the bureaucracy (incl visa) and even initial lodging. Many even offer a small allowance so the language student can focus solely on learning the language.
This sort of offer is available to trainer nurses and even aspiring nursing trainees who only have a high-school diploma.
I'm a medical doctor from the Philippines myself and I would love nothing more than to help my colleagues come to Germany as well, but it is virtually impossible. Doctors simply receive no support whatsoever from German companies, the government or job placement agencies.
As a point of reference, the cost for the language classes to B2 level and one attempt at the examination sum up to 7500 EUR. It will last for at least 38 weeks of daily classes (Mon-Fri) of 4 hours. You can probably see how that is incompatible with working, especially when there is no flexibility whatsoever when it comes to the language class schedule.
A trained nurse earns roughly 200-400 Eur per month in the Philippines. A resident doctor earns around 400 Eur (private hospital) to 800 Eur (government hospital). A moonlighting medical graduate can earn around 800 Eur as well. That is working 80-100 hours per week.
That sort of salary does not allow for savings; it's all hand-to-mouth.

in my country Botswana government IT structure are slow and always down at the same time educated IT professionals with barchelor degrees are roaming the streets or are working non IT jobs like farming. Nurses were jobless so they started applying to the UK now the government is crying foul. where i live in the last general election the so called POOR people voted a well known thief over an educated person for a council seat but cry foul when there are no developments. I am upgrading my qualification and leaving in 2years I will come back when i am 60

This Scheme is devoid of striking a balance between actually finding a job whose medium of instruction isn't German and actually learning the language for socialising purposes. It pushes a language first model and you are looking at 5 years losing valuable time to jump straight into a propelled career growth

The problem with Germany is that they need skilled workers but they don't want foreigners. It's a cold and stressful country.
This discussion completely neglects the colonial legacy on the African continent. It neglects the impacts the imf and world bank have on African governments ability to fund public services. This was very half assed
It's definitely a half assed presentation on immigration. It glosses over the fact that colonialism set Africa to be a source of raw materials for the colonisers. Labor is included in this extraction. The SAPs of the late 80s of the world bank and imf made it worse as African countries could not provide social goods to their people and people were forced to leave for the West to fend for their families. These are inconvenient truths that the immigration debate likes to gloss over. If they ever did then we would be questioning why African professionals cannot work and create wealth in their own countries. Meaning we would start resisting the extractive role Africa has been made to play in global politics. They know if we refuse to be good boys and girls play the extraction game, the Global North would be dessimated.
So basically African countries have to spend money educating people who then leave for the German labor market. That's a bad deal.
As a workman in as much as we love our countries, we sadly have to go where we are appreciated especially in pay and working conditions, it's not an easy choice but we have to make it, though it has its downsides as well...

While the issue of brain drain from Africa is true, I can't blame any young qualified African with professional skills who decides to work abroad when the home country does not care. My own country Benin is one such example that does not care at all about how qualified one is...

As a social welfare state, Germany needs highly skilled, high earning workers to pay taxes into the system. The question is will they be allowed to stay long enough to reap some of these benefits? Immigrants collectively benefit their host economies than they gain in return, often times.

Lots of people work abroad and make much more money for the same or even less work, then they send money back home to their family. The money ends up in their country. You can't see this as a loss to Africa. Africans working globally will help this world with acceptance of all races being equal.

I think the Nordic countrys will be a better bet for african professionals. There are huge job opportunitys in all matters computing and engineering. Our societys are fully digitally integrated, work/life balance is excellent. Free healthcare and free child care. 4-5 weeks paid vacation and people that dont have the "germanic" angry mind set. They are also more liberal then germans and dont mind speaking english with foreigners in the work places

Your Nordic countries are renowned for unfriendly people, horrible weather and rising nationalism(eg. racism and xenophobia). Just like Germany. Work life balance includes good mental health.

The salary in Germany is very low. The tax is one Of the highest worldwide!!! Many Germans leaving the country. I was leaving Germany already 2012 with family and business. Was the best decision ever!!!
As a Brazilian working in Germany on a english job, I've been trying to learn the laguage to better fit in. Today a German colleague said to me "HAHA! I if was a foreigner working on a english-only job, I would never learn German"!! What an incentive hehehe

Africa countries need to step up. Coming from a country where talent is not recognised I don’t think westerners creating jobs is brain draining. Because our leaders are brain killers so it’s better to travel to a country where they accept your talent pay you and your able to take care of yourself and families while building more talent and skills at the same time. I start to believe in the German labor shortage when I see a significant rise in wages. But currently, wages remain stagnant. Adding to this inflation, energy costs, and taxation, which limits the appeal for skilled people to come to Germany. Germany is an unwelcoming and cold country both in terms of climate and socially.

The jobs should be prioritized to the unemployed. The jobs should not be wasted on immigration. Poverty shoud be reduced. Not imported.
That won't work. The video has already said that 400k immigrants are needed each year. Currently, we get around 250k immigrants per year which is higher than was predicted.
Those numbers are from the German government which tracks demographic developments. Without immigration, the current proportion of the active work-force will have shrunk to around 60%. The economy would collapse when not only the population shrinks but the work-force shrinks at an even greater degree. An enormous proportion of the currently active workforce retires with nobody to replace them. It cannot be countered even if you enforce mandatory reproduction. The whole system is incapable of even training enough people.

@@MarcRitzMD Without immigration, there would have been less unemloyment. There would be less poverty. The workforce would have been better trained. The young would have a brighter future. The fertility rate would have been far higher. The population would have been far younger. It simply would work very well.

Maybe all countries need more education if their own people so they can take care of their country's people. Instead we're doing the opposite. Sapping countries of needed professional service providers.

Well, you can't force the people to go to school. Schooling is hard and one must have a goal in mind. A lot of these African professionals did not go to school because they want to. It is a way for them to succeed financially. They heavily study in the STEM fields not because they don't like "fine arts", but because it's a way to escape being poor. Failure in school is not an option. And a lot of these African Universities are harder to graduate from, compared to Western Universities. Case in point, most African students perform extremely well in Western Universities due to the foundation from their home country. Without these driving force, even if you make post secondary education free like in a lot of European countries, their children are not going to school en mass.
