China’s decision to suspend the release of youth unemployment data as of August 2023 has drawn attention from pundits and commentators from around the world. But how severe are China’s youth unemployment issues really, and how does the government calculate the figure?

This is just one of those things any rapidly developing country must address sooner or later. Just as people realise that the expectation that "house prices will rise forever" is a myth, they will also realise this other myth "getting a degree will get me a better job". It may have been true when only 5% of a cohort is university educated, but it will not be true when 50% of a cohort has a degree. People must be realistic in their expectations.
It's just basic supply and demand. In the US where everyone is college educated due to student loans, the blue collar workers actually earn more. You have to understand that even the Hispanic immigrants have their kids finish college as well.
It's not even just skilled labor. Everyone is aware that plumbers, carpenters, welders and commercial drivers are earning big money nowadays but it's actually not limited to those. I know someone who's a "baby nurse", basically a nanny for newborn infants charging $300-$500 a day just to babysit an infant while their college educated parents work. The house cleaning business is also very lucrative if you are independent and do your own marketing. No one thinks of cleaning toilets as lucrative but it is so long as you speak English and you don't have to give a cut to agencies (which is why hispanic immigrants earn less because of the agency's cut).
As long as population/immigration keeps increasing faster than new houses are being built, why wont house prices keep rising? The UK has many more immigrants entering the country every year than there are houses for them. Now they're putting them in hotels. Yes if the population of China halves like is predicted housing there would become cheaper. But it depends on supply and demand.

@@darthbumblebee7310 true but what kind of housing can be rapidly built? A different style to the current style. Such as 3D printed apartment towers, so the traditional property will still be desirable and more valuable, and the population will continue to rise
i actually have a very similar situation from playing a city sim City skylines. I have pushed my city's education level to the max and have around 95% poppulation graduated university. Then nightmare started. Theres just not enough position for highly educated people and no people is willing to work on loow educational position/ people are over educated for their position.

I think the data and it’s definitions are perfectly fair. They are consistent with other countries. The fact they stopped publishing it when the numbers got bad is notable though.
It speaks SO much louder than if they had just continued publishing it (well, for whatever the CCP’s numbers are worth, to begin with)

The rate cited includes 16-20 year olds, whether or not they're looking for work.
In the US and EU, that's labor participation.
The equivalent rate in the US is 45%, because tertiary education is more prevalent.
Its because blue collar jobs do not pay well so everyone has focused on education and thus competition is extremely tough as a result.

College graduates are after white collar jobs. Even with an economy as big as China’s, it is not quite possible for any economy to add that many white collar jobs every year. It looks like an oversupply of 60 percent at least, more likely 75 percent oversupply.
Just not accurate for developed economies. People retire. New graduates come into the workforce to replace them.
I'm going to make an assumption that many of the Chinese retirees aren't white collar. Stuff breaks down when economic cycles are condensed.
Not only add. Isn't the number might be reduced instead? The zero-covid policy was disaster along with the many business crackdowns in the last 3 years. Foreign investors are running away, and the rich keep trying to flee along with their capital either to US or Singapore.
I imagine there are plenty of high demand/high paying trade jobs that need to be filled, but the problem is that nobody who went to a "prestigious" college for 4+ years wants to work a trade.

The reality is, modern economy just doesn't need that many people (or we are too overpopulated for available resource). The reason is they are lying flat. There are jobs for them, but it pays little and with no career path. They rather live with their parents.

Its a priviledge to study without break till doctorate degree. Having a family to support you plus scholarships are essentials only few can have. educated people are increasing, scientific development have decreased the need for human participation. Also the problem is just more glaring with the western press specifically looking for bumps and dings and dents in the Chinese economy (not just for propaganda purposes, but in a genuine attempt to work out how the economy is doing so as to make prudent investment decisions).

This is happening in all economies where high skilled jobs are getting sparse and calls for a restructuring of the economy. The white collar demand is on a decline globally. Constant growth was never sustainable and we don't need to constantly produce more electronics that are quickly turned to waste. China start brainstorming! The future of all global economies looks at a 30 percent reduction AT LEAST.
Not entirely, China has a significant shortage of skilled workers in certain fields, such as in semiconductors. But Chinese universities are just not producing enough of the kind of talent and skills needed by the market, and too many university students are taking degrees which are not useful in the market. China also needs better technical schools to produce workers like skilled builders, electricians, high tech assembly workers etc. A big part of the problem is that parents often have outdated attitudes towards university education which they impose on their children and essentially set them up for failure. The Chinese education system also over-emphasises rote learning which, again, doesn't nurture the creative skills which the market needs.
The situation is same in India also huge population causing lot of problem😢😢

By not publishing the unemployment rate the government lost its credibility. It's a problem that has happened elsewhere, just not on such a scale. At some point SMBs will need to start competing on additional value and not just low prices, which would mean hiring better managers, marketing, design and engineering graduates.
China is to use AI to calculate unemployment rate, said by officals. it is simple, Since China is a cashless society, people pay digital, therefore, AI can quickly get unemployment rate by checking their income and spending.

@@josephwu3136 Yes. Employment is an indicator of economic growth, which Beijing considers to be an indicator of progress. Otherwise, China's Five Year Plans wouldn't have economic growth targets.

I am retired now and looking back on where I was between 16-24 years old - I was in high school and then in college. I only started work towards my late 24. So, what criteria does this survey tries to measure on the unemployment rate of youth between 16-24. Is it to measure how many are not working between the said age group when they should be in school? I also noticed most of the young people in China looking for jobs are in their 20's and less so between 16- 20 or late teens. Therefore is the said 20% rate of unemployment accurate?
Students aren't counted in unemployment statistics. The "20% rate" is means that >20% of young people who are actively looking for jobs can't find one.
You start work in 24, that only means you start late because you studied college. If u come out of your bubble, it is more accurate and reflective to measure young employment from age 18 - 25. Remember no matter which country, each year the number of graduates are far lesser than non-graduates entering the work force.

Actually the command of English is not significantly impressive which also prevent the youth from getting overseas remote jobs. Also one of reasons which makes them unemployable.
When there is a bear market, there are boundless opportunities for entrepreneurship. Deflation is coming and demand will come back to China in a few years. It's painful now but a more sustainable economy in the future with affordable housing.

I'm lucky to get a 5% interview rate from employers in Canada. And I have 2yoe as a swe... not from a prestigious school or prestigious companies in my cv though.
The best way to reduce unemployment percentage rate is by not showing it for a while, then 'recalibrate' the counting method. 😊😊

I think it is expected. We are in recession and business is not making money. Personal assets also shrinking, for example retirement stock account, etc..
During this time, less jobs and jobs with less benefits jobs are expected. Unemployment is expected to go higher. For new graduates with lack of experience, it will be harder to find job. The quality of the degrees could be a problem. Maybe there are just too many graduates from universities that aren't well ranked. Maybe the degrees that they're getting are inherently hard to monetize (like archeology let's say).

basically too much ppl are going to college when they aren't suppose to. after college, they don't want to work in physical labor jobs. USA has the exact same issue. The only reason why you not seeing physical labor jobs shortage in USA is cause immigration and migrants. In 2019, the unemployment rate in China is 10%, but in 2023 the unemployment rate becomes 21%. If it’s really due to oversupply from saturated market, it should be a gradual process but it’s actually not true from statistics showing. Hence, it’s more due to a lot of companies going bust or moving out of China within this Covid period resulting in the sudden staggering unemployment rate.

1- actually it has been going steadily higher. I'm using FRED history and it aggregates it at the annual level which is a bit weird. Months have be compared with each year's same month for seasonality purposes. Too lazy to find month data.
2019: 10.7%
2020: 12.7%
2021: 12.4%
2022: 13.2%
2- Likely, but not necessarily it means companies went bust. The "Youth" age bucket is defined as 16-24. But, its tilted heavily towards the 22-24 age bucket (people that graduated from college). In theory, if all companies froze hiring in 2023, it could push the rate higher.

In what world is18-24 year olds "normally considered students"? Most of the world does not pursue education after 18. Even in the U.S., only about 35% of those age 25 or older have a bachelor degree.. One quick google search would tell you that. Even in many parts of the world, high school education isn't attained by the majority. Even in the U.S. only 87% of the people finish high school. In other words, many many many people start working once they finish high school at 17 or 18. Some may not even finish high school and start working at 16-17 in the U.S. and in MANY places in the world. It's not uncommon AT ALL. Your confusion is a result of your ignorance.

On a bigger picture, we live in the era when a lot of jobs became obsolete due to automation / ai, while the younger generations no longer want to do the actual jobs, and many growing up dreaming to become "influencers", youtubers, tiktokers, cybersportsmen, etc.

21.3% of jobless rate for age group 16-24. Anyone with a functioning brain will understand 16-24 is the age where kids are still studying in high school and university. Why did they even publish that statistic in the first place? Its pointless.
China, like most east Asia countries, has a problem changing its old school mindset which will be its fall. the 16-24 was an old measure for when China was malnourished and very few went to school let alone graduate.

This stat serve no purpose. What the Chinese government should be publishing is the number graduate in each age group and each discipline that are unemployed per city and region. The problem of graduate to industry mismatch is a serious problem in all countries. The youth needs this information to plan his career and Universities need it to plan its intake. The government also need to manage quality and quantity of Universities to be approved and licensed.
Of course the government also needs to find our the employment demand of each industry in each region and city.

China is the most populated country in this world and though it is large but it is still not the biggest spacious country in this world.

United States asked nicely for the past decade that the huge trade imbalance in your favor should be addressed by making your currency float more freely. Nobody cared in China’s part thinking that the US cannot do anything about it. USA had no choice but to make some trade restrictions in return and that what’s causing this long pause in China’s growth. Now Chinese exporter are having a hard time adjusting.
Having worked in China for many years, the CCP is right in that their calculations are flawed. The youth unemployment rate in china is calculated based on whether you can find jobs the first year you graduate. So lets say you find a job the second year after you graduate you are still considered unemployed for the youth data. Also the company you work for must be legally registered for taxes, so if you work for a company that pays cash its also not calculated. Thus the unemployment rate is actually much lower than 21%. However, the quality of jobs in China is indeed of question and salary for the second biggest economy in the world is still very very low.

One of the main problems in China is that the level of automation of work is simply much much too high.
Almost everything is automated.
I watched a video of a car factory of a luxury EV brand in China, there were almost no-one in the factory!! It was all automated.
The situation in restaurants are similar. People look at the food menu and order their food on the app. They pay on the app.
So what used to require 2 or 3 people now require only 1 person.
Same with everything else. Jack Ma's supermarkets have no-one in the shop!!

python都没岗位，研发类的都是三轮技术面试，首先第一步是学历筛选，然后就是笔试筛选，之后是面试项目给你挖，数据库怎么设计，怎么设置索引，怎么测试的最大连接的，如何在单机坏了的情况下进行恢复。然后再问你python迭代器模式，装饰类模式，还有数据结构有哪些。怎么实现的，是不是线程安全，如何设置多线程，之后就是给你做算法题，像反转链表这种题目。最后还会问你一下linux相关的，还有docker之类。循环3次，才有可能拿到2w的offer，之后就是过了半年，就把你fire。
