- After eight series, Hirohisa Soda was finally ready to end his reign as head writer on the Super Sentai franchise. Thus, not only did Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman become his final series, but the series performed so poorly that it's follow up was planned to be the final Sentai series at the time. Is Fiveman that bad? Were audiences just burnt out on the franchise? Or was it just that Soda himself was burnt out and not giving the show his all? Watch to find out.

Fun fact: Arthur G6 is voiced by Rika Matsumoto, the Japanese voice of Ash from Pokemon.(As well as a singer for several Japanese Pokemon openings, and the Opening to Kamen rider Ryuki.)
If I recall, she was also the second voice of Bakura in Yu-Gi-Oh!. What's funny is that I forgot to look up Arthur's voice for the review. I looked up every other actor's bio EXCEPT Rika's. DOH!

Good to see G6 finally won a pity tournament after being screwed by writers for decades.
Fiveman is one of does Sentai shows that has a great concept but were never utilize more and it's sad because there's a lot of thing this show can pull off
Example:
- Keep the rivalries between FiveRed and Garoa till the end
- After Fiveman find out their parents still alive from Gunther, they trying to find more clues on their whereabouts
- Since the Fiveman were teachers, the school from the first episode should've been rebuild earlier so they could had more interaction with students, teachers and other staff members and maybe trying to find a way to sneak out of the school to go fight monsters
And yes you made a good point that Hirohisa Soda burnt out his ideas so I can't really blame him
Yeah, they didn't do much with their parents until the very end.
Makes you wonder why Toei couldn't find other writers to create Fiveman since Hirohisa Soda should have retire much earlier than continuing working for Toei for nearly 10 years.

One thing Fiveman has going for it are the visuals. The ranger costumes are superb, I like the set designs especially for the villains, and the fight scenes look awesome at times.
I do like the visuals.
In my opinion, unique concept with each member has their own expertise in academics and martial art. Also, the concept of sibling love.
It does have that. There was a lot I loved about the show, it's just that it dove into mediocrity so badly.

Well Sentai was already on the verge of cancelation thanks to Turboranger, but yeah, Jetman was going to be the end thanks to Fiveman.
Wow, Five Yellow's actress has a lot of names and identities like Keiko Hayase, Megumi Sekita and Ryo Narujima. I hope that she doesn't go for plastic surgery, cause I'm sure as hell won't anytime soon.

When she start as a actress, she use her real name in her early days(Keiko Hayase) until her marriage to Ryohei Kobayashi. She used Megumi Sekita stage name in late 1990s to early of 2000s before settling in her current stage name Ryo Narushima.
She goes by (I think) Keiko Kobayashi in public records.

Oh and if you're ever going to do a review on Turboranger, you should know that Remi(FiveYellow) actress was in an episode on Turbo Ranger in episode 37 who played Mika Yamaguchi, But not sure if she was a Villain or not
Only 6 episodes of Turboranger have been subbed so far, so I probably won't be touching that series for a loooooooooooong time. Thanks for the info though.

At this point I would expect Shout! Factory to release Turboranger before any fansubber releases it.
Years ago I watched the first 3 episodes and enjoyed it very much. It felt very much nostalgic to me that grew up watching Changeman, Flashman, Maskman and Goggle V. Now that I found the whole show with subs I watching it and just passed the half of it. Although the first half is pretty enjoyeable, I'm getting less interested in Fiveman as the tone grows inconsistent. I don't think the show is that bad but the shift in tone sucks and so is the lack character development (specially on the villains). I only recommend this show to people who really like old sentai and had already watched Bioman, Changeman, Flashman, Maskman, Liveman, Jetman and is looking for another sentai to watch.

lol If the puppets had been something introduced right at the beginning, I probably wouldn't have minded. However, the show's tone just does a complete 180 with the puppets, making them feel tacked on as if Toei wanted to attract younger viewers at the last minute.
At least they came from another dimension so I guess you can say that the Fiveman and Gerowa were cheering themselves on.

Maskman, Bioman, Fiveman, Jetman are the really famous super Sentai series in the Philippines.. these are my favorite childhood super Sentai Series

It’s an interesting approach that toei decided to make the team a bunch of teachers after last year turboranger. Also, fiveblack might be separated from five yellow like dynapink and her husband dynayellow. Their oldest daughter look exactly like fiveyellow. He’s even an active youtuber now.
Fiveblack actor said he passed the audition to play the eleventh kamen rider according to his socials. Rx wasn’t originally meant to be a sequel hence the suit being predominantly green, but due to kamen rider black success led toei to sign kotaro actor for another year, so fiveblack actor was offer a role in fiveman instead the same year. At least the 11th series wasn’t entirely scraped like zx after it movie special didn’t became a massive hit. It’s like mmpr white ranger/zeo gold ranger/vr trooper bts studio interferences with the casting of Tommy and Ryan.
I actually didn't even think about that. We had students one year and teachers the next. 😛
Actually something did come out of it. One was being demoted to toilet duty and janitor. The next was using the ships life force as they were unaware that it was alive and upgrading a Golem to make it more powerful and a mech leading him to kick the Fiveman’s buts initially and becoming a general once again.
That would be too many spoilers for the review though.
the start seemed good but it just seems like it just got week also I wonder how the fiveman were able to make the weapons and stuff they did I feel they got a bit lazy also the villains seemed like they had potential but it messed up
Despite the rumor that it was Chouriki Sentai Ohranger that nearly killed off Sentai, this season is the one that nearly caused the franchise to end, due to low ratings AND very low toy sales (likely because seemingly all the toys for this series were badly designed and shoddily made- one Five Blaster toy yellowed despite being put in storage for a year after having been opened once), although other shows have had lower ratings since then, it's worth noting that in those cases, said ratings were usually offset by toy sales; Ohranger, which had ratings of 4.452% in comparison to Fiveman's ratings of 6.49%, had some of the best toy sales in the entire franchise, selling 15.9 billion yen; although we don't know the toy sales numbers for all the pre-Jetman series, it can be assumed that they were lower than those of Mirai Sentai Timeranger or Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, which sold 4 billion yen and 5.4 billion yen worth of toys respectively, if only due to the fact that Toei didn't consider canceling Sentai after those shows. There were reports of Japanese toy stores having scores of unsold Max Magma toys

That is actually just a well-known children's song in Japan. It's not a Sentai exclusive song. I'm pretty sure kids learn and sing it in Japanese schools.
Shout Factory should put this one out simply so that they'll have released every 90's Sentai

Yeah, I like the combining weapons aspect. Although, I guess you could say the Patrangers did have to combine. :-p
As for Zedd, I never thought he lost his dignity after getting married. I do think he was shown a lot more threatening without Rita, but after he got married he destroyed the Thunderzords, destroyed the power coins, destroyed the Command Center, etc.
If they ever decide to adapt this sentai [likely 100% original footage] and kept the 5 sibling teachers bit, it would be very ironic since its usually teenage students that become power rangers.
Also if they change the name of the zord for PR, then the false advertising of 5 robo will indeed not be an issue.
Well they did have Tommy come back as a teacher for Dino Thunder. Though, it would be interesting if they brought in former cast members for the rangers in this one.
Hmmm that would be interesting. As long as they have them be teachers of specific arts like gym, music, etc to match their light motif.

I have not because it has not been fully subbed yet. Wandering Moonbeams has only gotten up to episode 37. Once they finish it, I will throw Turbo into my queue.

Fiveman is a good sentai in my opinion but good review the ending episode was great they defeat the strike force and rescue their salvaged parents 🤡

There was a plan that Ken (FiveBlue) would not be blood related to the other Fiveman, and in fact was meant to be revealed as Empress Meadow's son instead and the actors were even informed of this, but it was ultimately dropped because producers at Toei found the plot too dark for the show.
I don't think that would have made a lick of sense at all, specially if done at the last minute.
Well I just found out that Shout is going to be releasing this next on DVD. So that means like what you did with Jetman I look forward to when the videos get flagged then you can put them together.

I wouldn't expect Turboranger until either the end of this year or early next year at this point. I think they're going to start trending a release every quarter (the only reason we had 5 last year was due to Megaranger's delay in 2017) so it will probably be July/Aug for Fiveman and Nov/Dec for Abaranger.

Actually, I have to correct myself. For some reason I was thinking Gao was this year as I totally space it came out in Dec. As such, yeah, we might actually see Turbo by the end of the year depending if Shout! starts alternating between releases.
Also, Fiveman as a whole is what I like to call one of the good shows of all time. It is not excellent, it is not terrible, it is simply GOOD. I had a lot of fun. Jetman is better but I still come back to this one every now and then.
Fiveman can have a lot of great things in it, and a lot of bad ones, but it's entertaining.

I will say that Fiveman doesn’t entirely deserve to be blamed for almost canceling Super Sentai, as aside from the creative burnout that Hirohisa Soda was experiencing, the Nikkei index collapsed in 1990 which was an early warning sign that led to the bubble economy bursting and the Japanese economy crashing to create the Lost Decades. People saw their country’s stock market fall and panicked, deciding not to buy non essential items like toys, which led to Fiveman having the worst toys sales of a Sentai up to that point.
Not making revenue and having bad ratings would make any show loom over the chopping block and sometimes real life can disrupt the events of a franchise as we would see later with Ohranger.

Kaiju no Kami Fiveman is the best Super Sentai series after ended the kousoku Sentai Turboranger.
It may seem like an odd choice to have Five Robo have only three components despite being a five-man team. But when when you add Star Carrier and Max Magma, you have five components. I wonder if that was intentional.
Got to say your description makes this show sound decent, if only in terms of having good characters in an other wise, from what I've been told since I haven't seen it personally, a dull series.
Good point on the mechs. :-) Still, having 5 in the end was probably more of a coincidence than anything else.
It's okay, but like I said, it lost me in the second half and I feel like there were a few episodes I watched on what felt like auto pilot.

I will get around to them, but I've pretty much been holding off on the modern stuff for Shout! Factory to release them. However, I may be doing Gekiranger later on this year.

I think soda did a good job for Maskman. Maskman is good in general (do a review on it soon) 😊
I won't be getting to Maskman at all this year. I have mixed feelings on it though. Moreso than I did with some of his others.

I feel like in the Super Sentai Series and in Power Rangers, whenever the heroes have a Super form or they have a Super Robo, they'll continue using it at times when it's not necessary. I feel like it makes the forms weaker from each battle. Also, the second-in-command of Goggle V was Goggle Black. You mean FiveBlue was the first Blue Ranger since Sun Vulcan to be the second-in-command

There was a poster on the wall at Shout! Factory's booth today below a Kuuga poster. Nothing official was stated though.

The one thing I never got about this show is if the Galactic Warriors are supposed to be aliens, then why do they resemble and are named after earth animals?

Kaiju no Kami It was a awesome twist! Definitely one of the positives of Fiveman.

DOn't know, I haven't seen Ninja Steel. However, Nin pretty much feels like a low rent bootlegged version of Kakuranger because it is just repeating everything Kaku did better.

Also the villains base in ninja steel needs and *especially* the original villain suits need to be seen to believed, Cosmo royale is literally just baron nair with a big fake grin haphazardly stitched to his face and a voice that sounds like an ear gratingly high pitched version of the mad hatter. Saban apparently decided to theme the villains after that "ultimate ninja warrior" show which from what I've seen of it has *NOTHING* to do with ninjas.

Kaiju no Kami fiveman is a good sentai it's not great i am watching fiveman right now I am on episode 24 the worst written episodes are episodes 7 and 9 although they are a lot of fun to watch hurricanger is a great sentai👻

Actually there is a reason; hirohisa soda; a veteran Sentai writer: hit burnout during turbo ranger and fiveman, a bulk of the stories used could be seen as him loosing his spark, culminating with ohranger and carranger, ending his tenure on a very sour note

Yeah, he was clearly burnt out by this point and not even putting effort into his stuff. Though, Carranger is amazing.
Many Super Sentai reviews(also read it) noticed it when Fiveman story structure comes to analysis and Soda's burn out is the major factor.

That way all the Dino themed teams would get better writing, and not be treated as clones of one show with the same theme. That’s how I feel about the current Dino themed and believe they deserve better writing.

Five man is a show i really wanted to like more than i actually did. Its not terrible, but it could’ve been so much better. The sibling dynamic could’ve been interesting, but it doesn't really amount to anything, the villains could’ve been really cool, but they’re either way too one dimensional or their threat level completely diminishes in the second half. The only thing i truly liked in this show were the mech battles and the costumes. And Fiverobo’s theme was really great. You stated that Soda was getting burnt out on ideas, and i can really see why. Fiveman isn’t a bad series by any means, but its definitely one of the weaker entires of the franchise.
Yeah, Fiveman isn't terrible, just nothing good either.

You have Flashman and Go Go V which are amazing, and then you have Fiveman and Magiranger which are just mediocre to average. There’s no in between, Sibling Sentai can only have amazing entries and mediocre ones
