Wow, I observed that the Duke Orgs were basically Team Rocket by the time Ura took over, but I didn't know that one of them actually had a Team Rocket voice!
Also, not only did Tsuetsue's actress play Sailor Pluto for most of Sera Myu's First Stage, but Tetom's actress was Galaxia right after that! So it was fun to see them apparently switch sides, especially in that episode where they get into a fight.

Based on the description of the High Priest Orgs, I think I get the thought process behind Saban's decision to make their counterparts generals and create Master Org to be the central main villain.
Also fun fact, the Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades Org costumes got destroyed in a fire, so Wild Force couldn't use them for their team up with the Time Force Rangers as originally planned. So they repurposed a bunch of old costumes to make the Mut-Orgs for the team up instead.
Well Master Org was not exactly PR only, but to go into it would require massive spoilers.
Damn, that sucks about the trio of costumes though. What were they doing in a fire?
Kaiju no Kami well there was the first master org in the entire series the story in 2002 is the second master org (which spoiler Territory) for the whole show

At the risk of sounding like an idiot ...Do you think a Kou/Sae relationship could work? Keep in mind Dairanger aired in 1993 so by the time of Gaoranger in 2001 they would both be 17. The way I see it, Kou would have moved on from his infatuation with Rin(now seeing her as an older sister) and develops a crush on Gao White after witnessing her and the other Gaorangers in action against the Orgs.
That's actually a pretty clever idea.
Fun fact: this was the super Sentai made the same year when I was born. So, in the fall of 2021, I decided to check it out for its 20th anniversary just out of curiosity, and I thought it was honestly a pretty decent Sentai series.

When it comes to the villains and their generals, if the Generals and the bigger final villain are often not having much screen time, I think I would prefer the comedy relief side villains.
Trying to lure the rangers into their haunted house while the rangers clearly see through their plot but still go in there anyway. I would take that over any boring Villain Generals or Final Villain any day.
True. Tsue Tsue and Yabaiba are far superior to the wallpaper called villains we have currently been getting. I do like those two, I just feel like the show didn't really know what to do with them nor what they wanted its tone to be.

Great review as always. PR wild force was one of my favourites as a kid so looking forward to eventually getting to watching gaoranger going to watch gingaman probably before I get to it most likely. Been watching more rider over sentai this past couple of months. Did take a couple months off from watching toku but got back in the swing of things. Also do you have any reviews of Kamen Rider in the works would like to see you cover some more.
I usually end up switching things up as I'll have a year of Kamen Rider, then a year of anime, then a year of Sentai, then a year of something else (like right now I've been blazing through Tom Baker's era of Doctor Who).
Kaiju no Kami first sentai I saw was winged squad jetman and that was back in 2007😊
i love the VS movie, i know its pretty much a clipshow movie, but im honestly i dont hate them like others, they give some people a chance to see the past sometimes, besides its like PROO Once A Ranger but better, and the songs they give the clips are pretty amazing
That's the thing though, the clip show isn't even half of the film, so that complaint seems moot to me. Plus, at the time, most of the older Sentai shows hadn't been seen in 15-20 years, if at all. It made sense to me why they were do that.
Agreed. The current team interacts multiple times with their predecessors, they learn and develop thanks to that, there's care and attention to the franchise's history, fanservice for both young and adult fans, it provides us with a history lesson, both teams are equally proactive and competent, no one is overshadowed and of course the final battle with multiple mechs and the appearance of all the Red Rangers.
But of course, the fans dislike it because "EEWWWW, STOCK FOOTAGE!!!".
The VS movie is one of the best. It's how i discovered Big One, Go Yellow and Mega Pink.

Yeah, I guess it was one of the most few sentai movies that actually did introduced me in the history of Super Sentai. But, honestly...Gokaiger is the better introductions for newcomers to actually get into past sentai shows with their respective tribute episodes to past shows.
At least 27 mechs in total.

My parents gave me Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger on DVD for Christmas 2018 and it is an awesome series in my opinion.

I like it when I hear about people supporting the DVDs. There is one Toku board that no one seems to buy any of Shout!'s DVDs at all despite the users there claiming to be Toku fans. I don't even know if anyone there has actually bought a Garo BD either.
I mean, I love all the custom forms they can make, and the potential of it, and wish they explored more combos. I can see why people can dislike the number of mecha, though. Might be a lot to remember, or if you're invested in one of the auxiliary mecha and it hardly gets used, it feels like a waste.
There's that, but it also gets out of control at times to the point where it feels like they are just throwing in new mechs because they are obligated to and the story suffers due to it.
This is it, this is where it seems like the Sentais started to become super duper flashy. For reasons you pointed out, stuff like the overused CGI, repeated animations, and weird special effects are the main reason I can't get into anything made after 2005 for PR/Sentai, just because of how off all the CGI stuff looked. I liked the practical stuff much more and it felt cooler that way in ways I can't explain. Despite that, I enjoy Dino Thunder a lot and I'm super excited to buy Dekaranger whenever that comes out due to the action, and i'll give Beast Morphers a shot, but I wouldn't be surprised if the modern sentais have been declining in views due to that reason.
I do remember the VS movie being a big thing on youtube years ago as well, since I saw clips from it and it was the first thing that exposed me to the pre-Zyu helmets, since I wasn't aware of the Japanese origins. I found a lot of the teams to look super cool although I remember Battle Fever J's helmet creeping me out due to the facial features.
I'm going to give Beast Morphers a shot because I want to see how Hasbro handles a PR series for the first time.

Gaoranger is ome of my favorote Sentai Series and finsihed watching it last year and I did have to explained why they can't say their real names instead of using the color names but their real names are finally revealed in the last episode

Nice review, it is my very first sentai too, i rewatched it 1 month ago, have seen some negative opinions about it and it is somewhat overwhelmed by it's american adaptation which is Wild Force but i actually found it very nice, loved the aesthetics, mecha, BGM and action, the characters doesn't have a lot of depth but atleast they weren't nobody thanks to fact that we atleast know their backstories and likeable personalities but the problem is.. they don't have a lot of special backstories which makes them to look poor in front of Timerangers, who had deep and complicated personal stories that goes through the whole series (which is why some people found the Gaoranger team bland) Idea about making heroes to abandon their names and keeping them for the end of the series was great, idea about showing us heroes’ dreams for the future, after they’ll fulfill their mission is great too.
About villains... they weren't amazing, Shuten was not memorable, Ura was actually interesting, realeasing Rouki to get the evil spirit and his ultimate form thing was shocking and the fact that he killed Yellow, Blue, Black and White in front of the screen was truly shocking and traumatic (but unfortunately 31st episode was the worst episode of this series) especially that broken helmet with bloody face. gladly they got revived when they send their wishes to red and defeat Ura with GaoIcarus. (my favorite mecha) Rasetsu... i couldn't get used to him, he just does nothing but eat and give orders to TsueTsue and Yabaiba (the only thing moment about him was episode 44 where he was destroying Gao rock and everybody) TsueTsue and Yabaiba weren't great characters but.. they were only comedic reliefs after all.😐
As for the mentor Priestess Tetom, she was way superior than Princess Shayla, atleast she wasn't a pushover idiot but despite that... she doesn't a lot stand out, doesn't mean i hate her though, she had a beautiful voice, gives advices to the team and that's about pretty much it.
The team up movies were fantastic, gao vs super sentai was a good way to celebrate the anniversary of sentai, Hurricanger vs Gao was also entertaining to watch, Jakanja becoming Gaorangers and fighting with them, later real Gaorangers joining them and finish things with TsueTsue and Yabaiba.
Overall i can say Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger was a series that trying to be as much entertaining as possible and sacrificing plot depths just for that. Which may be a good thing, since after deep and complicated Timeranger series it was a nice idea to make something to let people to have fun without much thinking, so i'll give this series 7/10

You think it was a mistake for Wild Force to adapt much of Gaoranger?
Also, did you know that suits of the three Greek god orgs from the Gaoranger movie were supposed to be in the Wild Force-Time Force team up but got destroyed?
I wouldn't say it was a mistake, but WF didn't do anything exciting for me. The music could have fixed that had it not been so bland.
Kaiju no Kami There was some good moments but this was not the perfect ending to the Saban era. Thankfully it wasn’t left as the series’ whimper ending by Disney.
Why would it be an ending though when the franchise has continued on?
Kaiju no Kami I heard Disney was initially going to end the series after Wild Force but the producers convinced the studio if the show was moved to New Zealand, the show would continued.

The Kiden Beasts. lol I love how the Phoenix, Pegasus, Kirin, and Lion act as armor for Ryuuseioh and Won Tiger. After that, it would probably be Grand Liner and Kakure Dai Shogun.

@@after-hours Which unfortunately, was the only best episode in the show for Gao White's character. Every other episode that focused on her as a character was just not very good.
But, as someone who is among the long-time fans of Super Sentai, I do recommend you checkout other Sentai shows such as Dairanger, Megaranger, GoGo-V, Timeranger, Dekaranger, Gekiranger, Shinkenger, Liveman, Gokaiger and Lupinranger vs. Patoranger. They have a lot more decent writing and memorable moments and storylines than Gaoranger does in my opinion.

I think the reason for the Shout Factory DVD having more lightning and less flash at the end of that fight was to reduce the risk of seizures.
I just find it weird that Toei would go and edit their own content for that, but they did it with Jetman...
In 2001 Gaorangers was released, thus ruining Super Sentai forever
On a side note, I find it an amazing coincidence that this Sentai was the first of the millennium and introduced new traditions for the franchise while Wild Force was Disney's first entry after acquiring the license from Saban and unintentionally giving the Disney era its unique touch that sets it apart from the first Saban era

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Technically Ninja Storm was the first complete Disney production and the first one to be filmed entirely in New Zealand. Wild Force's production was mostly by Saban, but it was done after the Disney buyout and by the middle of the series it switched from Fox Kids to ABC Kids. So you could say it was Saban-Disney Co-Production.
Oh, so the whole thing never aired on Fox?

If you didn't leave after Turbo you most definitely left after Wild Force because this unintentionally gave the stigma that Disney could not produce a good show. That's bad, so bad that They almost considered canceling the whole franchise at that point just to save money before former PR Doug Sloan came back and said move it to New Zealand for filming it's cheaper that way And we got two more shows out of him. Both the both original Super Sentai show and it's PR counterpart had a mixed reception at the time. A lot of children have a lot of fond memories of PR Wild Force not knowing the flaws of this show are inherited from the original Sentai. Even I took to the next season more kindly (PR Ninja Storm) as a little kid. PS. I would rather take it over anything from the Neo Saban Era. There are some shows that from the Super Sentai Series post-Gaoranger are very well liked because of the stigma this show and the PR gave It gave way to much more sillier series. When Toei had another crack at the animal gimmick in a much more serious vain ala Timeranger and Jetman because how bad The last series before that one was it ended up under performing giving away more nonsense. Blame the 3-year rule myth or at least a variant of it, once the serious stuff stop stopping profitable, The more goofier shows became more the focus.
I have to say I'm glad I didn't listen to all the negative reviews I absolutely enjoyed this from beginning to end didn't really have any complaints. I found every episode entertaining love the core group and the action and the Mech's and the characters all around. I like Yabaiba and Tsue Tsue especially. I think the thing with Gaoranger is the team is the character they are all about being together and team and I think that might be what some people didn't like because they didn't really get as many stand alone character episodes. I don't mind that though as they have a really tight knight group and it works well. I really liked Gaoranger great series for me I really enjoyed it.
I like Gao, though it's a series I find myself liking less and less with each viewing.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork it's hard to pick just one I like the arcs. I'd say probably The Org Ninja Invasion that's was really good or The God Takes Away. I liked a lot of the Rouki episodes and the Gao God arc. I think I'm just less critical than most but this one to me really was good all around, I found myself just wanting to keep watching more I was never bored.

Ura was a fun villain as he was one of the few villains to kill people/rangers which made him more dangerous
I guess. I preferred Rasetsu of the trio myself.

One of my favorite wild force episodes is the one where the red rangers team up!
It's cool in concept but way too rushed and I hated how they gimped Serpenterra.
Rouki should've been the main villain, he was the best thing of this show.

I have all the Shout factor releases except Gaoranger. So far I've enjoyed all of them with Dairanger and Zyuranger as my two favorites. I'd say with the exception of Ohranger that one I barely remember I couldn't really get into that one. And I have Hurricanger but haven't watched yet.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I wasn't a big Power Rangers fan just watched the original Season maybe some of the second but always wanted to watch the original show as the main reason I watched Power Rangers was for the Giant Monsters,Mechas and the fight scenes. I have to say I'm really glad Shout releases so many. I know they have stopped it seems but hopefully some more are rleased at some point.

Gaoranger put me in the camp of loving it cause I love it. Also that was a great opening to the video. But I have to say that I'm not sure what your talking about when it comes to the DVD itself. It didn't look different to me.
It's easier to tell the differences if you are looking at them frame by frame and in their original encoding rather than when I had to rip the discs to MKV and then convert them to MP4. Unfortunately, I have no way to fix that.
Also I forgot when I wrote my other comment but I was in the gym yesterday they played Danger Zone on the radio then I watch this and you played it.

When you mentioned gaosilver being mopey who thinks everything is his fault you reminded me of zyuoh the world's personality. I wonder if they got the idea for his personality from this show?

I love Zyuranger. I think it is the third greatest Sentai ever made. It's got a solid cast of heroes and villains, even if Dan and Boi are not fleshed out, an interesting plot, fantasy elements merged with modern (at the time) society, revolutionary mecha, and truly outstanding monster designs thanks to them being based on mythology. The show does so much right but it is often overlooked because of the children of the week plots even though there's a whole story reason for that.

Yeah, I'll agree with most of the points you've raised in this review.
The ending theme I had to skip as I watch Sentai on my lunch breaks before I have to drive to my afternoon site and I need to be awake enough for the journey.
But the opening theme and much of the in-show music are all memorable. On more than one occasion I've found myself chanting "You are the king, you are the king, YOU ARE THE KING!" without realising it.
Rouki / Silver's arc felt a lot like Zyuoh The World's with him starting out as a really strong adversary before joining the team and becoming a mopey emo.
On the other hand, I quite liked the episode with Charcoal Grill Org - this reluctant baddy feels a lot like a proto ToQ Rokugou in that his duties as a monster make him feel unfulfilled and he'd rather make people happy. They both take on human form and dislike their monster personas, though Rokugou does lean more towards the emo side (as they have to stretch his arc out for more episodes), he ultimately realises he has something to protect. But enough of the future...
I like the VS Super Sentai movie, at least the parts of it with story progression. The clips of previous seasons were a little excessive but it was great to see how the show had changed over 25 iterations. Also Miku from Megaranger made an appearance and it's always great to see her. The flashback to the Super Miku episode made me remember how much I like Megaranger.
Of the bungling Duke Org duo, I feel Tsuetsue gets more interesting over the final few episodes where she gets her upgrade to Org Witch. Being in Hell must have given her a personality shift as she comes across as more competent than before. And even Yabaiba manages to show some initiative late on when he has the Orgetts grow giant to destroy the clues to the location of the Org Matrix.
The CGI was overly ambitious. I feel it was re-used because it was expensive - looking at the credits, if I understand correctly (and correct me if I'm wrong), the CGI was contracted out to another studio. They may have charged an arm & a leg for the footage, so reusing it may have been a cost cutting measure - one that hasn't aged well. 2001 also brought us Pixar's Monsters Inc, although back then Pixar were still pioneers of CGI, so a small Japanese company might not have had access to the same skills and technology. I've seen worse CGI though.
I don't think I'll put Gaoranger on my list of Sentai to re-watch. It's not a terrible Sentai but I feel like I've got everything I'm going to get out of it in one watch-through.
Hopefully Hurricanger will be more entertaining... what's this? A speaking rodent?

Hurricaneger is vastly superior. As for the talking rodent, there's a reason for it as he's not actually a rodent. No idea on the CGI since I can't read the credits.

The team is smaller than I thought. Not bad for one person, but they really needed a bigger team on this.
Looking at the end credits for Hurricanger it seems they went with a different studio.

Gaoranger felt like a series that seemed to be as entertaining as possible but sacrificed plot depths just for that. But, I honestly don't think that it was a bad thing, because after how deep and complicated Timeranger was, I believe it was a nice idea to make something just to let people have a bit of fun without much thinking, and that makes this an alright Sentai in my book.
This could be true, they wanted something more simplistic compared to Timeranger.
I think gaoranger has some of the darkest episodes because of that 1 episode where all of the gaorangers except gaored and gao silver died as well as how all of the animals died

hmmm honestly I kinda like wildforce better aside from the zordfest it was handled really well in power rangers as they would be given a decent amount of screen time I also like the fact that they introduced the first human villain in Master Org in terms of looks he looks intimidating with emperor gorma's garb and I always liked his staff the dude's no pushover either and the main villains of the sentai were reduced the generals I also liked Jindrax and Toxica as far as comic relief goes I also liked Toxica's chant to make the monsters grow plus I like how well done the red ranger and master org's stories are intertwined to one another as cole is a protector of earth and the environment while Master Org himself is just a simple man who grew bitter and just wanted to watch the world burn and I think we can agree that their fight scene is badass
Right now I'm 8 episodes into Wild Force and I think it is worse. Half of the disc was just introducing the zords one right after the other without a break in between. The best scene has been when Cole confronts Master Org.

I'm glad you enjoyed the show. Because I didn't. I just didn't Gaoranger was that interesting of a show. Especially, when I have other Sentai shows that I should be watching like GoGo-V, Timeranger, Dekaranger, etc. Hell, even Kirameiger is actually pretty good and that is also a show that I should be enjoying for a casual perspective. But no, it had to placed after Ryuusoulger and I hate that.

I'm guessing it's TV Masters but with the sponsor cards cut out or streaming Masters. This one is a mistake on Toei's it's not complete total revisionism but they could have also had a new scan of the film if was was shot on there or had a new master made.

I’ll admit I was really excited for this season’s release on dvd because wild force is my favorite power rangers season. But I found gaoranger just okay at best I don’t hate it but I guess I had my hopes a little to high, also kaiju I enjoy your reviews but if you don’t mind me asking why do you seem to be against the aux mecha in this and shows going forward, I know their purpose is to sell toys. But I feel they help keep the mech fights entertaining and add variety, unlike the pre zyuranger seasons and gingaman where it felt like I was watching the same fight over and over again
I just feel like auxilary mech take away from the main form because they become so dependent on bringing in a new machine every few episodes. I tend to like the main designs and would rather just see the main design in action.
Also, reviewing them is a nightmare. 🙂
I guess that makes sense it’s just for me and some others watching the main mecha fight over and over again can honestly get boring so this is why I honestly perfer having more mecha it helps add variety and gaoranger just had such variety that the mech fights kept me the most entertained with gao Icarus being my favorite mecha in all of super Sentai and power rangers also some people like me actually prefer or like alternate combinations more then the main ones
