hes the only person ive seen to use a vocoder in this way. he runs an oscillator through it and has the key dialed in so when he changes pitch by twisting the knob its always in tune (i saw a video where he explained part of his setup somewhere). creative. dude kills it
delnuggets The base of his board has always been a microphone into a digitech Whammy then that signal gets run through an oscillator into the vocoder. I think its where he picked up that hand wiggle thing he does when he gets really into it.
I saw him around 2012, I think? A relatively small crowd and with two drummers on stage on either side of Dan, essentially playing the same thing. The whole audience was on cloud nine. He handed out lyric sheets for Wham City and everyone sang along. To this day, it was the greatest live performance I have ever been a part of.
The energy he puts behind those vocals, I never knew. The album is polished, so there is no way to know that he is really belting it out. This was cool to see. It made When I Was Done Dying so much more powerful.
I’ve loved Dan Deacon for over 10 years. And he never fails to perform in a way that makes you aware of the fact that, despite whatever sounds he uses, it always feels like a real human opening up right in front of you. If you haven’t actually read his lyrics for these songs, you need to. Some of them haunt me still.
This is one of those recordings of which I remember exactly where I was when I heard it for the first time. Very visceral and intense music, could not stop listening.
Fun fact: When I Was Done dying sounds different live bc its literally impossible to sing it. The studio version is multiple takes stitched together, and trying to sing in that cadence for as long will make you pass out.
Yeah. I imagined covering it with my old band, and I figured what we’d do is trade vocals every couple of lines to maintain the cadence without anyone passing out.
Wow. This popped up on autoplay, fucking amazing. Thanks KEXP for featuring crazy innovative people like this. I'm an instant fan. That first song is too good.
Holy fucking shit why is no one talking about that absolutely amazing Improvisation perfectly transitioning to Learning to Relax?? Those sounds were so damn clean and beautiful. My lord even the ending is tickles my brain in all the right places.
this is funny. I've seen maybe like 90% of all the KEXP shows. but I can't remember single one that went into real improvisation on that spot. Everybody kind of wanted to stay cool and professional.. It will be interesting to see more people step out of their regular setups. Not that I prefer improvisation over the sets but thanks to this video I realised that it was something I've been missing here.
I bought some acid from Dan Deacon once thinking it was mali cause he said it was. before he handed it over he donned a stethoscope, checked my heart, looped it into a fat beat, then told me to close my eyes, lean my head back, and open my mouth. I've been saved ever since.
I love that while he has his own distinct sound and rhythm (which I have blatantly copied in my own music), his music has evolved and matured over time. I think the lyrical side has especially grown in prominence recently.
Anytime anyone asks me what taking acid feels like I show them this. If you know you know. Ex girlfriend had a deer tattoo. I lived that deers life all 900 years
what is his set up? like i known over the years but this set up looks different like that knob he turns during the improvised part what is it i would like to get my hands on that :)
That synth he's using during the improvisation is a wave generator running through autotune in ableton and some effects, the other guy got the rest pretty spot on

Is he even using the Op-1? Fuck, I use mine with almost everything I write.
like Laurie Anderson
i run the vocoder through my ass
It's strange watching Dan perform without an audience. The social aspect is such an important part to his music.
I looked up his boiler room set after reading your comment and I gotta say he knows how to handle a crown.

Was thinking same. It was nuts when I saw him live.
I've absorbed this set sooooo many times... "learning to relax" has so much fucking emotion to it ❤️😭

love it when music makes me cry joyfully.

I saw Dan support Future islands last year in Glasgow and he was absolutely amazing

Always impressed when a live performance is as good or better than the recordings. Great set!!

Spiderman of the rings was my introduction to mr Dan Deacon & 20 years later I'm still in love

Clipping. did a couple improvised bits
He creates some of the most beautiful sounds.
Keep it up Dan. Never give up.
Such a showman. Love watching him twiddle that knob as though it does anything at all.
the knob literally changes the pitch of the oscillator he's running thru the vocoder
The knob from 19:12.
@@foxtonstreetI think that us a scatter knob that chops things up
Also the best version of learning to relax. or maybe no1 agrees?
He's a GENIUS and so authentic... Just loving this! THX so much...
When I Was Done is fun, magical, wonderful; the last lines are like an absolution.
Beautiful
Pretty cool to see someone do this live
Amazing what one person can do with today's musical technology combined with some creativity.

I've been saved ever since.
+Nick Stephens Not sure how you mix up lsd and molly, but sounds incredible nonetheless!
***** dude, probably shouldn't trust someone who confuses molly with LSD.
I'm pretty sure Dan's sober.
+Nick Stephens
Beautiful.
+E P the smartest dealers aren't users themselves....duh
This is really DG. Amazing
I love that while he has his own distinct sound and rhythm (which I have blatantly copied in my own music), his music has evolved and matured over time. I think the lyrical side has especially grown in prominence recently.

Woah, wow. I didn't know he was a one-man-band. Some incredible.
Love it!!! Dan Deacon sounds great!
This is the first time I've seen dazzle camo used on a synth/controller rig. That's... kind of an interesting idea.

I will listen to this @9:30 "anytime, anytime."
1000 POINTS FROM POLAND!
I wish acid made me this talented. All I do is grab fistfuls of dirt and talk about extended sneezes. Dan is the man
Dan claims he has never used acid to write his music.
@@dont-feed-ben4833 or at all

He’s so good at those knobs
Anytime anyone asks me what taking acid feels like I show them this. If you know you know. Ex girlfriend had a deer tattoo. I lived that deers life all 900 years
