From the newer videos of Sam "Time Will Fly" is a genius. The song, the lyrics, the videography are all ingenious. In the video you will also learn a lot about Sam's coming to age, and his history with Ren by short clips and flashing images.

Great story about Sam and Ren… they first met when Ren was headed home from busking and saw Sam singing out on the street w/o any equipment. He stopped and listened for a few minutes, then unpacked his ‘stuff’ and set up for Sam to use it. They’ve performed together.. pls consider listening to Blind Eyed MC sessions. BTW - I just saw where Sam has sold out his upcoming concert in Toronto.. he’s such an incredible singer/talent.

Happy you finally decided to look into Sam! The first time or two I heard him I really thought he was trying too hard. I thought, honestly, he was a wannabe. It was about the third video it finally struck that he's the real deal, and he connected with me. I think it was one others have suggested, with Ren, "Blind Eyed, the MC sessions". You're in for a real treat here.

All of Sam's newer stuff is crazy good. Every song hits you right in the feels, whether it's about his lack of confidence, or his Dad, or anything else.
Sam has pioneered a way to make his vocal tone so appealing. You know a songwriter leans on his own lyrics when they can just harmonize the tone of the song with their vocal switches. Purely talented
Oh wow Chris, I didn't realize you hadn't done any Ren + Sam stuff yet! My god are you in for some incredible performances. Together, and solo Sam too. His pop is *almost* "not mainstream" enough for me to genuinely like his solo stuff, but mostly I listen to his solo stuff because no matter whether I like mainstream pop or not, his VOICE is something I don't want to miss out on (and the lyrics are often so beautiful/deep/meaningful).
My favourite is always when he's collaborating with Ren though, because their energy is THROUGH THE ROOF (and then it's not pop... or if it *might* be considered to be pop, it's Ren bringing his alternate takes on pop).
I can't figure out what would be my wish list "first Ren + Sam" video to see you take in...
... I mean, so many will say one of the videos they've done of Blind-Eyed, a song they wrote together right after Ren got his first effective treatment for his Lyme Disease and had a renewed lease on life (even if of course it hadn't *solved* the problem... at least he could live more of his life outside of the house again). And it went viral, gave Ren some of his first attention outside of the UK I think.
- The MC Session is my favourite version - GREAT live performance with great sound quality; best chance of catching the lyrics.
- Busking version - incredible to watch them at work in front of a crowd, but the sound quality is SHIT. Like, *really* shit.
- Music video for the official recorded version - super interesting/cool, but I'd be sad if you chose it because... I don't want to give spoilers for a reaction channel so I can't say, but let me tell you that YOUR CHANNEL'S FOCUS ON THE EXAMINATION OF THE HUMAN VOICE AS INSTRUMENT means you need to do one of the acoustic versions.
- Angry Car Park Attendant version - ABSOLUTELY essential viewing for fans and I think you would be utterly delighted... but its popularity is at least somewhat due to what it shows about Ren's personality and their friendship (as well as sure, of course, Ren & Sam's talent and skill). The MC Session is still the better experience of the *song* imo. Others will disagree.
... BUT... I actually wonder if the video that's titled "Improvising Around Stevie Wonder" on Ren's channel is maybe the best place to start, for you! Possibly THE most playful performance in Ren's (and probably Sam's) videography... which of course, is saying quite something.
You should check out Ren and Sam doing Latch live! The harmonies are phenomenal!😊

Its crazy how a mindset shift of "how it should feel" instead of "what I want it to sound like" is the most important thing you could do for yourself, as a vocalist. You do so well at explaining and demonstrating what things should "feel" like when you're attempting all sorts of vocals, and it's paid off like crazy for me in the past couple of weeks.

I’m so pleased you got around to this Chris. I’ve suggested it a few times. It’s my favourite Sam performance. Sam is very much a ‘ballad’ singer songwriter. He has some superb live performances 👍🇬🇧❤️

"what went wrong" part one and two are good one's with both ren and sam
I am with others that Blind Eyed is a must listen and there are multiple performances that really give just a sense of who they are as performers. The MC session is the most technically refined version, but after that check out the parking garage version - they started recording in a spot for the accoustics and Angry Parking Lot attendant chases them out, and they just keep performing with some laughs and vocal insertions of playfulness. They don't get distracted from the performance even when Ren's guitar string(s) snap and he keeps going hard without missing a beat.
Their stort of meeting and Ren mentoring him is a perfect example of the goodness of who Ren is, but the parking lot version shows who they are as performers - not afraid to be playful, make technical 'mistakes', and just have fun performing regardless of their surroundings. They don't get overly concerned about sounding perfect, which you highlight often, and their is just an ease with their instrument they make it seem effortless.
I am surprised you haven't heard Sam yet, because some of Ren's best work is his busking covers, and they perform together often in that form. Many of Ren's most gasp-worthy moments with his talents come in those performances, so I highly recommend them.
Hopefully you'll notice something extra special - whenever he duets live, when the other person has the main part, he takes giant steps back or even drops to his knees while playing guitar, as if in reverence of the person he is honored to play with, and he makes sure the spotlight and focus is on the other person. It is that humble, ego-less aspect that drew me deep into the Ren Rollercoaster, since the way a person handles those situations speaks volumes to their character. He doesn't demand the full spotlight, he makes sure the other person is getting an equal chance to shine, and it genuinely gives me chills sometimes to watch those incredibly pure moments of performances

You DEFINITELY need to watch Ren and Sam's original song called "Blind Eyed" live in studio on a UA-cam channel called "Music Crown" it's absolutely amazing how well they work together. Then watch another live version of that same song but it's on Ren's channel and he labeled it "Blind Eyed featuring the Angry Car Park Attendant" haha you'll see how they work under pressure and still manage to kill it!

So happy you have checked out Sam Tompkins - Time Will Fly official music video is epic but I personally love the vulnerability in See Me especially the live performance version, raw. Sam is in the States over the next few weeks NY, Chicago, West Hollywood, San Fran between 28th Sept and 14th Oct before returning to do some European dates (ps TORONTO Velvet Underground sold out!!) - If anyone is near any of these to check him out they def should!! he's a massive down to earth guy who is a writing and vocal star - such a lovely humble guy!
