I have had my Magnolia Jane for 10 years in my Wisconsin garden, 30 miles from zone 3. It is doing great. We had a winter a few years ago that had 59 days with below zero temps and she pulled through. Didn't flower, but we were just happy she survived. I never knew about fertilizing though. I can't imagine throwing Magnolia blooms on the ground like that.
If i lived in a climate that would allow this type to flower without frost getting them every spring I'd have them all! So i gotta stick to the summer flowering ones my favorites are the umbrella and big leaf magnolias but not for the flowers but the banana like leaves.
Hi Matt! I live in Ontario Canada. I have a Royal star magnolia….I had it now for 3 years…Canadian winters are brutal. However, I will add mulch for the winter this year. I have noticed that the blooms this past spring were not as abundant. We had severe frost during our Spring of 2022. And, as a result, I did lose a lot of buds. You can plant it in a southwestern corner and in the winter put up a few wooden sticks and protect the tree with burlap. Give it a try! Good luck, Susan. PS. I do have a tree company that does a deep root fertilizer in Spring…….
@@animalsareourangels93 their the same as acer palmatum my climate we have frosts and freeze every single spring. Zone 6A 2500 feet in far southwestern Virginia with zone 7 thirty minutes southwest and zone 5 thirty minutes northeast plus the ridge just east of me is the spine of the Appalachian chain. Any of those early spring mags get got every spring. I've had 2 star mags but regardless the spring flower freeze issue I can't get the scale to go away. I got an Elizabeth which is a hybrid with the native cucumber magnolia thinking it'd be resistant but no its eat up with scale and far too large to try and treat it tho I've tried. Plus the Elizabeth is supposed to bloom later avoiding the frost which is a lie. It's a very hardy cultivar you may wanna try it. What truly gets me is all the native cultivars such as big leaf, umbrella, Frasier, and cucumber do not get scale nor do the evergreen types. Why the spring flowering types get eat up with scale idk when the others are completely resistant to it makes no sense. With your severe climate do try the Elizabeth magnolia it's very hardy and grows quickly and should work well for ya....if you can keep the scale in check.
@@mattlloyd9054 Thank you so very much for this information! I will definitely look at this species of Magnolia tree. My Royal Star Magnolia is actually 6 years old. I did purchase it from a tree farm. I had them plant it because it had to be dug out of the ground and as you can imagine, the root ball was enormous. Although they charged $1000 to plant it, it does have a five-year guarantee that if it should die, they will replace the tree with the same size. Since I’ve had the tree in my backyard not only do I get it fertilized but I do have them spray for scale every spring. I know that this is a common problem and can kill the tree. Apparently, they are predicting that we in Ontario Canada are going to have a very cold winter this year. That is obviously some thing that we don’t have any control over, however, I still worry that it may die. Thank you once again for this information. I do appreciate it ! All the best, Susan
This is so interesting ... I planted the rare variegated Chinese dogwood behind the Australian eucalyptus looking tiny leaves rare plant. I have those and the Japanese maple what feels like 2,000 miles away north to south. The line technically works in causim east to west.
I planted magnolia two years ago. When I bought it had flowers, but now for the second year did not have flowers.i wait for the next year after I planted and never had flowers. Can someone tell me why?
I bought one saucer magnolia, now two feet, grow quickly and two yellow birds. grow slow, I will transplant to big pots. now under one foot, hope grow faster.

What are the fertilizers called i want to know. I have magnolias trees at my backyard and we have no idea how to take care of them. But watching this video helped out a lot.
I have two lovely magnolia trees and the new leaves are crinkled. The tree looks very sad. Can anyone tell me what is wrong. Do they need a specific feeding regime? Any assistance will help.

Nice video but it's customary to credit the location and personnel being interviewed. I'm going to take a wild guess this is at the National Rhododendron Garden in Olinda?
@@ozzycosco3716 HA, I admit I had sped past the few seconds they were on the golf cart and missed it. Still, would have been better to put it in the description, or to open the segment with an announcement of the location. As is customary with such reporting.
Many possibilities, it too young to flower (particularly plant from seed) usually spend more time until they ready to flower. Or maybe it about fertilizer or PH soil, magnolia prefer ph5.5 to 6.5.
It would have been nice if you would have touched on magnolia fungal foliar diseases, otherwise; magnolias are to die for. Perhaps foliar diseases don't flourish in that climate.
Anyone else felt nostalgic when she shared the memory of her mama? 😍
The magnolias are blooming in Melbourne now, I love it. This video is so educational. Thank you 😊
absolutely invredible. wonderful camerawork, capturing the beauty of these trees!

I really enjoyed that profile on magnolias. Minus the evolutionary comments as I think these were created and designed ❤️
No, they evolved over millions of years. Evolution is a fascinating process.

Just 1/2 a hand full of a good quality slow release general purpose fertiliser every 3 months
What should i do with left over of flowers in my little gem. I believe it will be the seed pod. Should i leave it there or cut it off. Thanks
Leave it.
How much water do they need? For a young 3 year old? What preferred drip irrigation?

Ce se întîmplă pe timp de iarna dacă o ți afara
There's absolutely nothing in this video about actually growing Magnolias.
You must have missed the crucial to growing information at 1:05 onwards
Lol agreed...in the beginning there were some basic point on care. Maybe need to change the title of this video. It was a good video
God made them wonderfully didn’t he? They were made with that big flower because God is wise. Not because the plant was wise and created itself.
Eeerrrrr they dont pre date jesus though ….so get your fact right
