    At 14:50, you nicely mention doing an undercut first, so that the bark doesn’t peel off from the weight of the branch falling when the cut is made. My son is an arborist, this is a crucial step that a lot of homeowners don’t know about. He priced a pruning job and the homeowner declined and did it himself, every tree had several wounds from peeling bark, they looked horrible.
    You’re such a good orator, you would have made an excellent school teacher! Great video!

    Thank you so much for this video! I have a magnolia tree in my front garden in the UK (inherited when we bought the house) and it's become so large and hasn't flowered well this year. It's still very leafy. What month can I prune this please? As we are in the UK I thought perhaps now (August) but maybe I need to wait a little more?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for your question.
      As David mentions in this video the best time to prune these types of Magnolias is in early summer, just as the last of the flowers are ending. With you (depending upon your location within the UK) that is likely to be sometime around the end of April or early May, or perhaps even mid-May.
      We note you mention that your plant did not flower well this past spring, so if that looks likely again this coming spring, then of course you can begin the process sooner.
      The reason you do it as early as possible, is that this leaves plenty of time for the new growth to re-establish and set flower buds for the following spring.
      As you probably already know, Magnolias are wonderful for lighting up the spring scene, but sometimes, some of the earliest flowering selections can get damaged by frost and cold weather, which means that then they do not flower well.
      Should you be interested here's a link to a video David posted several years ago, that explains why later flowering selections like the DeVoss or Kosar Hybrids:
      ua-cam.com/video/U_rN2pHa1rs/v-deo.html are very popular and more reliable.
      We hope this all helps.

    Great video and clear, instructive advice. One question: one of my overgrown magnolias flowers twice a year (early spring and late summer). When should I prune it? I am inclined to wait until the second flowering is more r less finished, but do not know if this is correct.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for your kind remarks, it is nice to know our efforts are appreciated.
      As for pruning your Magnolia, David suggests you wait and do it immediately after the spring flowering ceases. That will allow the longest possible time for the new growth to establish and set flower buds, and also avoid the possibility of late growth becoming winter damaged, if you were to have a mild, extended autumn.
      We hope this helps.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Рік тому +1

      If it is a deciduous one (one that drops its leaves in autumn like here in David's video) the best time is after it finishes flowering in late spring. If you care to tune in again around the 3 minute mark you will hear David explain more about this timing and why its important.
      On the other hand if your plant is one of the evergreen sorts, then you can do it over a longer time period - in fact from spring through summer and even in winter. The only time to avoid would be late summer early fall, because there's a chance you might stimulate new growth that might be vulnerable to cold weather going into winter.
      Hope this helps.

      A well-balanced slow release fertilizer can be applied in early spring. To preserve our independence we do not specify individual brands but there's several good formulations available that work well, and when you talk to the experts at your local garden center: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ they will be able to guide you further.
      Regarding the flowers not opening, we wonder if this is caused by frost damage and therefore we direct you to this video that David filmed several years ago for our sister brand Garden Splendor: ua-cam.com/video/0NLPl2Bs26E/v-deo.htmlsi=Ab47boUXTsn_6kfX this will give you tips on how to protect your plant during these brief (but critical) periods.
