That's the problem,it'll be sorted with the new part, just lie on your back with a 10mm,or 8mm cant remember unplug the wire going to it first ,it's a fiddly job but undo both bolts slide the switch back away from the gearbox look at the shape of the rod coming out and and ease the new switchback on its sounds harder than it is and takes 5minutes to do,I remember it showed me the wrong gear on my dash I went through all the gears turned it off back on left it a minute to sort out what it does and everything was spot on .Good luck and don't worry all the best CRAIG
@@madchaders1 Thanks for the reply,,in one word,,a big NO,,, I took of all the fairing off ,but I still could not get my hand in near it,,, I think the swing arm on the RT is quite abit bigger (chunkyer)then the GS,,, I counted over 30 small screws holding the fairing on ( and of course lost one) So I have to get some garage to fix,,, I,m now of a mind to get a new part ,as I cannot imagine having todo this on tour....The bike has been laid up for a year and I was just returning from its MOT when the problems started...My old girl is an 05,,and this issue has got me thinking whether it maybe time too get shot....regards
Craig, thanks mate I am in PNG with no local support and have the exact same problem on my 05 12GS , appreciate the video, I have ordered a new sensor...not sure when it will arrive ... / John
sorry cant remember that far back but bought it from ebay for £35.00 i think there was only two different ones and i just got the one for that year, try a bmw specialist store online like motobins.co.uk they will definetly sort the right bit. Hope this helps you out.
Thanks Craig. I have a new to me 2005 model and it did this on a ride. Somehow the light came back on and got back home. I now need to open it. How do you know if its still repairable or is it just a replace?
craig dilworth cheers Craig. Had an ignition unit fail on a 800 gs. Couldn't turn it off! Had to leave it with the lights on, took the pilot bulb out but the led back light drained the battery during the day so finished work and had a useless bike. That was a crappy little microswitch
highdownmartin my front brake micro switch was dodgy as well bought a new one because the brake light keep coming on and draining the battery and it wasn't that it was the two wires coming off it towards a steering column had snapped and I had to solder them which fixed the problem.
craig dilworth worth remembering. Wires are too thin, I was shocked when I changed a heated grip and found the wires and connector more suitable for a battery connection on a sixties portable tranny. These are2A load! Micky mouse in my opinion, but I like old school electrics, feed, switch bulb earth. No bloody canbus bollocks Safe riding. M
I LOVE that you are working on your bike on the CARPET !!!
Doesn't anyone 😆👍
6 years later and your still helping 05 owners. mine is running one position off right now. I have it showing N but its really in first
That's exactly what mine was doing, hope everything is OK now
Thanks Craig, same problem on my GS of similar age. part on order.
you explained it really well and I'm relieved its not more serious....hopefully!

Oh great that thanks John, I didn't have a problem after that and if you lie down on your back it's easier to get to the switch best of luck mate 👍😊
Thanks for sharing.
Good stuff 👍..... mines OK but who knows .
Hello Craig, can you please add a link for the gear selector so we dont order the wrong one and also to have an idea on pricing. thanks.

Thank you, bro. I got the same problem. Try to find out It located. and you show me that? Thank you.
Estou com esse mesmo problema. Você poderia me informar qual o número da chave que utilizou para retirar o sensor. Grato . Manaus am Brasil.
Does it need re jigging in the ECU after you fit a new one?
Too many tiny tiny microswitches on bmws. When they fail your fucked.

It's just not worth trying to mend if I can remember it's a circuit board thing that moves around, easier to buy new and ten minutes to fix
hello Craig how did you manage to remove the male torx bolts??
Thanks
Hi mate it was no torx bolts on mine just normal bolts 10mm spanner put it on center stand and lay on your back quite easy from underneath
how many problems does this bike have?
To many...
Did it sort it?
highdownmartin Yes it did mate and no problems after, definitely replace the switch takes ten minutes
