    Being from the Eastern Shore of Virginia and fishing in the ocean and bay everyday from April until rock season was over I can't remember not knowing how to put string on a reel. But my friend from the Midwest never fished but hunted and trapped nearly all year depending what critter was in season. Anyway he put three rod and reels together before visiting yesterday. I said wow Dan I thought you'd never been fishing before. He said I haven't but I watched this video on utube and just followed the guys visual instructions. If anyone needs quick advice on stringing a reel please watch this. The instructor is extremely clear and basic. Great job on the video dude.

    Reels with these mechanics are called "baitcasters" by almost everyone in the fishing world. While I will admit, that's technically this is not a baitcaster, the misnomer is so common that these types of reels are normally marketed as baitcasters. Technically, baitcasters do not have a level wind. Reels absent a level wind are called "conventional". However, both are normally marketed as level wind or conventional bait casters. All of that to make the point of, why call this guy out on something that makes absolutely no difference?

    • @SunnahSurvivalPMC
      @SunnahSurvivalPMC 7 років тому +1

      You're on the right track with your message, I like it, I gave you a thumbs up, but I disagree with the part where you said that a baitcast reel technically doesn't have a levelwind. Baitcast reels can be levelwind reels and levelwind reels can be baitcast reels. Most people have no idea what the mechanical differences are anyway.

One side to the other. Tie on your braid pull tight. Proceed as normal.with the amount of braid. Then mono should you wish

    When you cut the excess line off the slip knot, should you leave some amount of excess in case all your line plays out and the knot still needs to hold against a fish? Or should you cut all the way back to the knot and only exoect the knot to keep all the line from loosening on the reel but not to hold up against the fight of a fish?

      It's meant more to troll with from a boat. It's a big reel. You can still cast with it though. You may not be able to cast far due to the size of the reel.

    • @jeremymosier6116
      @jeremymosier6116 7 років тому +1

      kat eldiablo I know this is an older question, but no bait casters go on what is called a casting rod (eyes on top) and spinning reels go on a spinning rod (eyes on bottom or water side of the rod). Just make sure you are purchasing a CASTING rod if you plan on using a bait caster or conventional reel (regardless if it is levelwind or not).

  • @terryashton9213
    @terryashton9213 8 років тому +1

    When you put tension on the line with your thumb and Index finger, you should be allowing them to go left and right to follow the Level Wind. Not doing this is a good way to get the line piled up on one side more than the other. Should you find that the line is getting piled up more on one side than the other, continue to pull the line to the short side until it is straightened out.

    • @davidhopson2004
      @davidhopson2004 5 років тому

      True mono straight on the spool. The tape is to keep the braid tight to the spool. So it won't just spin without reeling it on to the spool

    What we have here is a level wind trolling reel. After tying the slip knot you should tie an overhand knot in the tag end. That will prevent the slip knot from slipping. You also want to have the line go on the reel the same way that it comes off of the spool to prevent line twist. Now that you are more knowledgeable you might want to redo your video.

    • @ChattCats

    Couple questions for you! Do you need to put tension on the line when you spool it or is gripping it between your thumb and index finger enough. Just got my hands on an old Penn 320 GTI Levelwind and I'm going to test her out for sturgeon this weekend, and pointers for using the reel? I always use spin cast reels, not too familiar with conventional reels, how to adjust drag, guessing lever down is free spool, stuff like that. Thanks, great videos by the way!

    • @ChattCats
      @ChattCats  8 років тому +1

      Great investment you got there! Yeah, you can just grip the line with your thumb and index finger for tension. Lever down is free spool. Do you have a button on the side that goes up or down. If so, that's called the bait clicker. If you push it down and put the lever down, you can hear the line run out when a fish picks up the bait. Keep the drag pretty tight, just enough where you can still pull line out. Hope this helps!

    • @SunnahSurvivalPMC
      @SunnahSurvivalPMC 7 років тому +2

      Nathan DeCastro...Shimano Tekota is not worth the money, the Bass Pro SS-30 is a much better deal and it has 5 star reviews due to its performance and durability. Also I've looked at the internals of both reels and the Bass Pro Snaggin Special SS-30 has stronger/beefier internals than the Tekota. Also, the SS-30 is not marketed as a trolling reel, even though its a great reel for trolling, its marketed as a big catfishing and snagging reel. Also the Shimano Cardiff is not high speed, its SLOW, its retrieve rate is 22 to 24 inches per turn depending on the model, even the calcuttas range from 23 to 30 inches per turn depending on the model which is still slower retrieve than the Bass Pro SS-30 which is 32 inches per turn. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

      Clay Jones No it shouldn't, he's probably using it as a musky rod of catfish rod, for blues and flatheads, use a higher speed casting reel instead of a trolling reel like his, I suggest using the shimano Cardiff.

    • @SunnahSurvivalPMC
      @SunnahSurvivalPMC 7 років тому

      Nathan DeCastro........You think a Shimano Cardiff is "higher speed" because it has a higher gear ratio? Well, sorry to burst your bubble but Shimano Cardiffs bring in 22 to 24 inches of line per turn of the handle while this reel brings in nearly 32 inches of line per turn, so this reel is WAY faster than a Shimano Cardiff even though it is a lower gear ratio. Gear ratio is meaningless if you don't understand its relation to the size of the spool because that's what determines your line retrieval in inches per turn.

    It's not a baitcaster reel it's a trolling reel. And the pole that the reel is on is also a trolling pole not a baitcasting rod.

      Trolling reel yes, trolling pole no - it's actually a casting rod

      Sami Alam What’s the difference? Not the guy but interested, don’t know. Lost line guide? The line feeding loop that floats back between left to right filling spool. Do you know what it’s called and can you replace them? Penn senator 4/0 113 reel, don’t know much about fishing, or even right rod to pair for use beaches Florida. Thanks! Sorry for ignorance. I’m not guy being picky about names of reel types.

    • @stevethepyro420
      @stevethepyro420 6 років тому +5

      I'm pretty sure it's a baitcaster, that's the only type of reel that sits on top of the rod. It's a baitcasting reel with a levelwind. Conventionals don't have the levelwind.

  • @bassmandan9484
    @bassmandan9484 7 років тому +4

    It's a conventional, but you can put the line on a baitcaster the same way, so quit complaining and catch some fish.

    Great vid......... but I purchased 2 penn level wind 309 reels, WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK!!! Never again. These reels are very cheaply made, and the clicker for some reason always stop working. Arbu Garcia and kastking are much much better reels, but a lot more costly.

    And that is how you can easily loose a fish, lure setup, fishing line, fishing rod and reel. If you care about your equipment do not do it this way!!! If you have more money than cents go right ahead!!!

    • @ChattCats
      @ChattCats  8 років тому

      I've never lost a fish, lure, line, rod/reel with the way I have been doing this....

    • @kd8fki
      @kd8fki 8 років тому +1

      Nor have I but I have has several close calls. What I do now when I replace my line I take a small pice of tape on the spool and tape down the line end then get it started. If say like what happened to me were at the lake, I backlashes the heck out of it and lost a lot of string. A few hours later I had a big one run it ran the line out and well the pole almost made it into the lake. If you use the tape method if something happens the fish will not ever take that pole as long as your spool is unlocked. The tape simply hold it down long enough to get the line started and after that it is weak and will allow the line to fly off. We all know how things happen leaving extra line at home, falling asleep night fishing, having to go to the bathroom. And when do the fish like to hit.? Well the Mose inconvenient times. Nothing wrong with how u do it but I'd rather loose some fishing tackle than everything including the pole. God know that is the heart of fishing.

    • @nathandecastro6677
      @nathandecastro6677 8 років тому +1

      Jump Matthew the tape method should only be used for braid because the mono tends to hold the spool a lot better

      Wrong. The philosophy of use of a reel is not determined by you, its determined by the manufacturer and/or vast majority of the users of that product. I own this exact reel(Bass Pro Snaggin' Special SS-30) and it was designed for casting and it casts beautifully. There are many conventional/levelwind/trolling reels that are also designed for casting. This is one of them. This reel is used mostly by people who catch very large heavy catfish/carp and some people who snag paddlefish. I don't mean to sound harsh but try to learn before you teach.

    • @ChattCats

      That's actually a pretty big reel for catfishing. I now use 50 lb mono on my reels. I use heavy line because of the heavy current we have in our rivers. It can be difficult pulling up a 50 lb fish with heavy current. Thanks for watching!
