  • Learning how to spool a reel is likely the first thing you’ll need to learn about fishing. Much like the difference in casting a baitcasting and spinning reel, spooling a baitcaster can be a little more of a challenge compared to the spinning or push-button reel. In this video, TackleJunk81 breaks down everything you need to know about spooling a baitcaster. Including many simple tricks you can use to spool your reel more efficiently and properly.

Good tutorial but make sure when you're showing how to put it through the spool you keep the camera there for people who can get lost easily, and not keep switching camera angles.

I still haven’t found a Video on how much Mono to put on before the Braid and how to measure so you don’t use to much an send up with a little bit of line you can’t use on a spool. I think a line counter may be a good investment to save line but still new to this stuff.

Clockwise and counterclockwise depend on perspective I think it’s less confusing if you just say to spool it the same direction it is filled on the line holder

About 6 years ago, maybe more I bought a baitcaster because I wanted to learn how to use it. It was an abu Garcia and was about 80$ and I just couldn’t use it at all.I tried everything that was in the videos. So I gave up and gave it away. And it wasn’t till just recently I realized that the baitcaster I bought sucked. Well I wanna give it another try. So I did some research on what kind of baitcaster, would be good. Not just for a beginner but good overall. So I went to dicks sporting goods and purchased a Lews Mach 2. I read that it’s an extremely good and reliable baitcaster. I spent 200$ on it. I’m so excited to try and use it but I won’t be able to for a while
Unfortunately. I live in NY and 95% of all the lakes and ponds are frozen. Even the rivers by me have massive pieces of ice floating down it.

CRNATN for sinking baits use fluorocarbon line since it sinks. Use monofilament when fishing baits in the middle of the water column or top water. And preferably use braid for the same stuff as monofilament but braid is more expensive plus it’s better for fishing heavy cover

    • @michaelhochman5694

Normally I use 10-20 lb braid 10 lb monofilament and 15 lb fluorocarbon

if you are spooling braid onto your reels always start off with a little bit of mono on the bottom. Braid is slick and can roll on the spool, called under spooling. Mono is slick but sticks to the metal of the spool.
1- arbor knot the mono onto the spool as shown in video.
2- wind on three to four layers worth of mono....if you want to save money then go half-way with the mono
3- connect mono to Braid using either a Blood knot or Uni-to-Uni knot
    4- spool on the braid.
I like a 50- 65# braid spool with mono or flouro leader.... this does kinda hampers casting a little, smaller braid will improve casting.

So what if your buddy had an actual job he or she needs to be at when you decide to spool your reels? Or say you you get a wild hair at 1am to go fishing at 5am?
What I did was use the pencil (or rod) through the plastic spool of fishing line and then placed that rig on top of my sneaker (or boot) where my leg/foot would go. That held the spool perfectly while I reeled the line through the lowest eye/guide of the rod to which my reel was attached. Of course one must think a little ahead and have that stuff ready, then thread the line through the lowest guide of the rod and then on to the reel, etc. When reeling up the line, I keep pressure on the line as it passes through my fingers that are gently wrapped around the fishing rod.

I have a question for you. Why is it that some baitcast reels work better with Mono or Fluoro instead of braid? My newer reels Lew's, Shimano DC, BP-Johnny Morrison, Quantum Smoke? The best reels I've find for braid have been Daiwa. Bad thing about their reels, make my hands hurt after a day of Fishing. Maybe it just me? I've fished many of tournaments in my day and at 57, I would fish all my reels with braid. Now, cranks - on fluoro and plastics - on mono.

It’s actually the line guide on the spool that guides the line as it lays onto the spool...not you!
If you went through the trouble of ensuring the spool is centered inline with the spool so that the spooled line isn’t “lopsided”, then make sure your line guide on the baitcaster reel is all the way to one side when you tie the line to the spool, otherwise, you’ll get a little bit of unevenness because it will spool whatever that differential space is first until it reaches the end of one side before going back to the other side. Although, with small reels, it’s usually not really perceptible.
