  • Finally back from my trip to Europe and time to create some new videos! I thought this week we would take a look at the Poly-Mod section of the Prophet 6. Poly-mod is quite a unique feature, even though the concept was first seen with the Prophet 5 in the 1970's I can only think of a handful of polysynths with this feature.

Excellently demonstrated P6 is a beast !. Those fm tones were luuuuvly. Polymod is just so powerful and adds that extra dimension to what could be a predictable sound.

It really is great, much more versatile than the P5 or p10 due to the onboard effects and stereo voice spread! :D

The FM (osc 2 to osc1) is basically similar to the FM available on the Jupiter 8. This adds a lot to the sound. The Filter modulation (osc 2 to filter cut off) is also available on the Oberheim Matrix synths and also very nice.
Didn't know about the shape and PW modulation options. These should be very nice also.
Thanks a lot for this instructive demo!

Thanks for the info... always wanted to get my hands on a Oberheim Matrix or XPander (even the 1000 racks or a 6). I don't know why but the Jupiter 8 has never been a sound I liked. There is just something about the filter on the Jupiter that does not excite me. I must be about the only person that is not seeking a Jupiter 8 :D

Still own a Matrix 6R, and although getting somewhat outdated these days I still like it very much because its modulation matrix makes it so versatile. You can use it to fill every niche and corner in a mix, of have it shine by itself. Had a Jupiter 8 but did not use it all that much. The oscillators on the Jupiter 8 are awesome. I doubt if the osc2 to osc1 was a linear FM, but you could get some nice bells and "pianos" out of it. The oscillators being all analog brought some natural warmth and liveliness there.

The Rev2 has 4 LFOs and the loopable aux envelope for PolyMod and in this respect blows the P6 out of the water.

Hey Mike, good to see a new vid! That P6 is really great. Classic signal path and a bunch of possibilities, but with reasonable limits. Makes it interesting but not overwhelming, as you demonstrate! 👍

Thanks Alex! It really surprises me how polyphonic modulation (much like Poly Aftertouch) has never become a thing.. Yes the P6 really is a great synth. I don't feel like I'm missing out since I sold the Prophet 5 any longer :D

@@100ThingsIDo Yes, wonder why that it is? Maybe because the FM synths did similar things like the bell tones and FX? So it got forgotten about?

Makes the OB6 vs P6 decision tough. Lot's of overlap but that SEM feel and SVBPF are so beautiful. Gorgeous video.

I was trying to purchase a Prophet 5 at the time I got this. I found it sounded more than close enough for what I needed, plus a much better key bed, modern Midi and USB functions and the effects section!. I have not had a play of the OB6 but I suspect it depends if your after that classic sequential sound or the Tom Oberheim SEM filter sound. Interestingly the Pro 2 which I also own has a SEM style filter! :D

Its one of my favorite synths. Close enough to the Prophet 5 to sit in the mix the same but with more features and a lot more modern. You have to spend quite a bit of time learning the 'tricks' with the synth to get the best from it :D

Normally I choose the scale based on the feel I want the track to have! For the last 5 years I have been working away from Tunes to more abstract or improvised tones. When I do something based around a standard tune structure once again I use the scale to define the flavor and stick pretty much around that! Hope that helps :D

subhuman - FM is one way to use polymod - you can modulate osc1 in each voice with osc2, at audio rates and tracking the keyboard if you want. That’s basic (2 operator) FM. It’s a very useful option on the p6, for example to make usable bell/xylophone/steel drum sounds that you might not expect from an analog synth.
If you use osc2 as a polymod source, but =slow osc2 down to LFO frequencies=, you can do a lot of cool stuff where polymod acts like a separate LFO for each note; e.g, notes you start at different times will each have a different vibrato, instead of all swinging up and down in pitch together.
(A definition: polymod is a simple mod matrix with two sources -osc2 and the filter envelope- and 5 destinations: wave shape/pulse width/frequency of osc1, plus the cutoff frequency of the lowpass and/or highpass filters. You can choose how much of each of the two sources you want, but unfortunately =both= sources modulate =all= the destinations you choose, and in the same amount. So you can’t, for example, modulate the filter with osc2 only, and at the same time modulate osc1 pitch with the filter envelope only. )
