The Appassionata is one of only two of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas that actually ends in tragedy, the other being the Moonlight. And it ends far more dramatically without the lengthy repeat in the last movement, as Backhaus superbly perfoms it here.

Backhaus playing Beethoven is always a pleasure to hear. He made that wonderful Bösendorfer piano sing so majestically.
