Always nice to see Graham Parker get a mention. He is so overlooked. Discovering Japan is a brilliant song and the whole album Squeezing out Sparks is amazing. Great from start to finish👍
Great video as normal Chris. One chord wonders would be at the top in my list as it sets the tone for the rest of the album so well. I wonder what we'll play for you tonight. Something heavy or something light. Something to set your soul alight. Those first three lines says it all.
What a wonderful song that is . I always say I prefer Gary Gilmore‘s eyes but that’s probably for nostalgic reasons. One chord wonders is a better song. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Best wishes, Chris
Great video Chris, great choices. I love your videos as they often prompt me to get albums and singles out that I’ve neglected, Real Life is on the platter now 😅, cheers
Hi 👋 i was 17 in 1977 , and i felt very excited about what was coming out of Britain with the Punk scene. Im 64 now and sometimes listen to albums from the past. The only thing is its all nostalgic. Long gone is the excitement that i mentioned. I have a regret that i didnt enjoy myself fully back in 1977. Im in old age now , and there is no going back. Anyway good records . I like Magazine very much.
Hi Chris, superb selection, and your comments spot on. Stiff Little fingers knew how to start an album, with Gotta Gettaway first off on Nobody's Heroes.
Hi Chris hope you are well mate another fantastic video highlighting 3 or 4 of my favorite albums that have ever been recorded Elvis Costello the stranglers magazine siouxsie and the banshees uk subs wonderful stuff have a fantastic rest of your weekend until the next video STEVE
Very enjoyable..delighted to see Art School being rated so high. Only thing I wasn’t sure about was your difficulty getting into Germ free adolescents as an album…I have always found it very accessible.
Hi Ben, I think it’s a voice that gets me. I’m not a massive fan of the female voice in rock music if I’m honest. But there are some tremendous songs on the album. Cheers, Chris
@@TheVinylOrchard Aah…OK…yes, if you don’t resonate with a voice it’s hard to get into it. I know people had the same with Kevin Rowlands…a marmite voice you could say. Also watched top 50 singles…will watch more of your content, I like it.
Excellent…. 2 of my fav opening tracks are Running with the boss sound from Generation x 2nd album “ Vally of the dolls” and Kill the poor , Dead Kennedy from Fresh fruit for rotted vegetables.
Great list!!!! I’d add: - Your Phone’s Off The Hook (X) - Change Of Ideas (Bad Religion) - Private Eye (Alkaline Trio) - No Revolution (The Explosion) - That Song (The Bouncing Souls) - Walk Away (Dropkick Murphys)
@PunkRockPete I like music from its original era. For me punk is a 76-79 thing. I don’t listen to any beyond that tbh. I feel the same about hard rock although it’s a much longer period 67ish to 83ish.
@PunkRockPete I disliked Oi and the like. So much preferred the post punk sound. For me personally punk served its purpose early on and beyond that era sounds rather dated.
Hi Chris, what can I say, can't fault your choices. I would have to put Holidays In The Sun as my favourite opener, like you said, the sound of the Jack Boots marching the beginning. For me that is the best by far and appropriately EMI ending the album. Another underrated band in my opinion The Vibrators, Pure Mania, an absolutely brilliant opener. 10/10 for your choices though. Cheers.
Nice list Chris. Other notable album openers: I Feel Like - the Stranglers Tank - the Stranglers Dazzle- the Banshees Watching the Grass Grow - Punkadelic (Nik Turner's punk band) Bata Motel - Crass (cmon Chris - where's are the Crass tracks in your list!). Cheers
Great picks as always. Love Precious, Chrissie with the absolute best ´F**k off!´ in music history. The Jam always opened strongly. Pretty Green and Burning Sky being my favourites.
@@TheVinylOrchard… thoroughly enjoyed this variation on a theme, and totally agree about sequencing. It is an art now lost in the world of digital downloads. Similar thing goes for live set lists. You’ve already got me thinking about opening tracks on LPs from other genres …
I'd offer Adam and the Ants. Cartrouble (Parts 1&2) on Dirk, Dog Eat Dog on Kings, and even Scorpios on the much maligned Prince Charming are all solid opening tracks
There are so many great ones a few that come to my mind are magazine because you're frightened from the correct use of soap, simple minds somewhere, someone in the summertime from new gold dream, split enz dirty creature from time and tide, the police next to you from outlandos D'amour and Ultravox slow motion from systems of romance i have many more these are just a few that came to mind
Great review. I can't disagree with much here. The Dead Boys did release a follow-up album, "We Have Come For Your Children" Sire 1978 (and a live album 1981). The second album is very similar styled first wave punk that is enjoyable, but not quite, as good as the debut. You can sense why there wasn't a third. Despite being rarer it sells for about half of the cost of the predecessor with a low median of only around $20.
Ultravox xtc the stranglers by far they were absolutely the best of the best back in the day live few others came close but theses were the cream of the crop 🎉
Chris check out witch in My view of xtc drums and wires black sea I se you have the early ultravox one ha ha ha is great then sysytoms of romance then foxx went down the electric route still brill metamatic and of course first three albums by the stranglers or and don't forget tubeway army 😂@@TheVinylOrchard
'Cascade' ....Good call... a great track! better on 'nocturne' tho but not the opener of course!! 'CID' by the Subs!, 'suspect device' by SLF!!, 'Holiday in the sun' by the Pistols!!! The Ruts....all brilliant!.... What about Albatross by PIL ?
Top pick not for me this time Chris, never liked Patti Smith, never got The Saints either even though it's the genre I love 🤷 Holidays In The Sun for me music changed with that opening stomp. Ruts could've been the biggest band in the world, they were so good 👍
I find Gloria a fascinating song that probably doesn’t really fit with the choices but it inspired the video so I included it. Holidays is brilliant and on some days that would undoubtedly edge Ruts. Thanks for watching again my friend. Have a great rest of the weekend, Chris

Absolutely right Thomas!
💯% agree , got every studio album he's ever released an absolute under the radar legend and still going strong to this day .
Not one bad selection there Chris - what a fantastic playlist those choices would make!
I must omit I’ve been toying with the idea of putting a link to a Spotify playlist below the video. Cheers, Chris
Well done Chris fantastic video.

Some great tracks but just not all at once. It’s an exhausting listen! Cheers Roy

Cheers sir!
some great choices there, bit later but I thought of FFF by PIL on Album or Dumb Waiters by The Psychedelic Furs on Talk Talk Talk
Still looking for a cheaper copyof that album.
Makes me lament losing most of my album collection. A great pre punk opener would be Dr Feelgood's album Down by the Jetty with She Does it Right
Great choice
Lovely list as usual. Would you consider The Cutter leading off Porcupine or One Hundred Years opening Pornography as appropriate here?
With exception of Siouxsie from 82 most is 70s based. Great songs though. Cheers Richard, Chris
@@TheVinylOrchard Sooo how about Television's See No Evil or Talking Head's Thank You for Sending Me an Angel from their second album.
