  • Madam C.J. Walker was suffering from poverty and hair loss when she decided to concoct a hair regrowth lotion to heal her damaged scalp. Fast forward a handful of years and millions of dollars later, Walker was leading one of the most successful, and philanthropic, cosmetic companies to date.

Wow! So she invents a new item, she identifies the market and then sets out to establish this market. She hires, trains and benefits her employees while selling a good, honest product. She then identifies social needs and manages to promote good people. All of this while raising a family alone, and as a black woman!!! Even now that would be almost impossible.

I read a biography about Madam CJ Walker in 2010, she was exceptional, the Netflix series doesn’t really do her justice, but at least more people are learning about her. Yes, it’s a shame we were not taught about her in school, but that’s why books are wonderful, I have learned so much from books and having Google & UA-cam has been awesome, to further my learning. I went to grade school in the 60’s, High School in the 70’s & college in the 70’s-80’s.

@SpankBuda - 1. Madam CJ Walker also dabbled in politics. I think she would be FABULOUS on a 20 dollar bill! She took lemons and made lemonade!
      1. Straightening the hair with heated combs was the norm back in the day. The women would feel more appealing to black men also. Wearing the natural look, afro's and braids, would come in the 60's and 70's.
      2. Rerun the video. Her first product healed the sores on her scalp and helped to grow back her hair. It did not change the texture of her hair. So this was very beneficial to all women who had dandruff, etc..

They continue appropriating black ideas. Why? We blacks are so disorganized, self hating, and distrustful of each other. Too many of us don't want to be black and believe whites are our friends. They aren't. We have no friends and refuse to be friends to ourselves. We also won't support each other. Did you know that Ghana and Nigeria were making their own automobiles engines included? The Ghanaian car is Called KANTANKA and the one made in Nigeria is called INNOSON. Kenyans are also making their own car. IN Ghana and Nigeria these are black Africans designing and building these cars. A white Kenyan is in charge in Kenya although the factory is run by blacks. Guess what? In Ghana and Nigeria the blacks are still buying foreign cars. Solve that one.

Miss Walker was a very savvy business woman who capitalized on a market that Avon ignored or refused to serve when they started in 1886. Any woman, let alone a daughter of a slave, who started a business on her own in the late 19th century showed resilience, bravery and fortitude. It's sad that the sulfur she worked with for so many years was likely the cause of her kidney disease.

I see many comments stating, "Why wasn't this taught in school?"
It depends on the school and what decade you went to school.
Let me tell you where I learned about her. I learned from JET magazine. Back in the 80's they used to feature someone of color that did something special. If you were Black in my hometown, you subscribed to JET magazine.
I remember when She was featured, my hairdresser talked about the article in the shop.
Just another note, I used to do proof reading on State Exams before they were sent to schools, and they frequently used stories of American people of color who did something fascinating. They featured someone who lived in that schools state. So, if your kids get tests from a certain company, they include interesting readings like Madame CJ Walker.

Madam C.J Walker was an extremely intelligent woman, not everyone is able to discover a working formula like she did. It is not just taking this and that, she actually used her brains and even if she had no schools behind her, she was apparently a greatly educated lady who was even able to grow up her business that way she did.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was kind of a starter to the home parties for selling cosmetics and other products, that is what she did, she employed ladies to go door to door demonstrating to the women showing on them how it worked.
I think the world is due much more credits to her than there exist.

But in this day and time people always talking about sulfate free shampoo and no petroleum and everybody is creating a product when hair grew without any special product. Sometimes I wonder what has happened. Now I seem to struggle with hair growth and healthy hair more than ever.I’ve used protective styling in the past and had much success with hair growth, but I’d much rather deal with my hair in its natural state whether short or long. Most stylist nowadays don’t even press anymore it’s always a new product or a new way. I miss the days of simplicity when you could just use almost anything on your hair and it would work. Miss you Madam CJ Walker and many others like you including D Low haircare systems with Alternative Beauty Salon also Mary Peek.

A newspaper wrote an article stating she promoted straighting hair not natural. But when I see another journalist, black female journalist writes the story as negative pisses me off. However as a professional black female hearing about this story, It was inspiring it was about an African American woman who paved the way for other entrepreneurs. I personally loved the story. Fantastic and inspiring

Why is everyone giving her credit when she literally ripped off Annie Turnbo Malone from Metropolis Illinois????? Annie was the first woman to get a million from manufacturing. The 13 year old inherited hers.

I'm from Indiana, if I'm not mistaken Madame Walker live there for a while in Indianapolis, I was born in Muncie and grew up in Indianapolis. Downtown she had a movie theater built, THE WALKER THEATER, it's still there today, it's a historic place now. Just like it was when she had it built.

Just watched a short documentary on Mary Ellen Pleasant who was a bi-racial (?) woman bought out of slavery, lived for some years as a white woman, started her own business, used her privilege and wealth to help many other black people get a head start in life and earned $30 million dollars, and now I'm learning about this self-made millionairess. My question is, why aren't there more leangthy documentaries or movies about THESE KIND OF WOMEN? All we ever see are the typical victim types while these women actually DID something wonderful with whatever God gave them. They were obviously intelligent, insightful, were doers and go-getters and knew how to legit play the system that was against them at that time. I'd love to see more success stories such as these. 😊 Thanks for the upload.

Very smart woman indeed. On top of everything she cared for those who were not so well-off and an active advocate for civil rights. You will never, ever, find this in a history book and it should be told with other inventions done by people of color.

This a very wonderful story but what is missing in this story is Truley how she came to be. Annie Malone was the first self made millionaire & she trained Madam C. J. Walker in her beauty school & gave her the first job as hair care sales agent. The story Truley starts with Annie Molone which is / has always been removed from the Madam C. J. Walker story... It is safe to say without MS Annie Malone there might not have been a Madam C. J. Walker. Both of the sisters during that great time should be recognized. Do more research & learn about Ms Annie Malone
