I love how Rick fixed the mistakes he made in the books, he literally thought the river was closer to the arch so he had Percy jumping to the water and in reality there's no way he could have made that jump

Fun fact (Greek Mythology edition): strictly speaking Olympus is not heaven and the Underworld is not hell. The gods are the only ones who get to live on Mount Olympus, everyone else goes to the Underworld. The misconception that the Underworld is akin to Hell comes from Biblical Translations referring to Hell as “Hades.” The Underworld is actually divided into various sections, the main three sections are Tartarus (Hell), Elysium (Heaven), and the Asphodel Meadows (a slightly nicer Purgatory).
Fun Character Fact: The reason Annabeth knows so much about the St. Louis Arch isn’t just because it’s her mother’s temple (which is a change from the books) it’s because Annabeth is an Architecture nerd. She loves architecture and wants to be an architect when she grows up (at least in the books but I don’t think they’ll change that).
The 'hell' section of the underworld is not Tartarus. It's actually the Fields of Punishments. This is where the evil human souls go.
Tartarus is where monsters go to regenerate.
@@meghnagoel6766 While you are right for the most part the last line is wrong. That’s just in Percy Jackson. In the actual mythology Tartarus is a being/place where the worst monsters are imprisoned. When Kronos was in control he put the Cyclopes and Hechatoncheris in there to be guarded by Kampe (This was referenced in one of the books actually). When Zeus took over he put the remains of Kronos and the other titians in there along with Kampe herself.
Also, Hades is actually a chill guy. He's not the chaotic evil devil stereotype assigned by primarily Christians (and Hollywood)
He's more of a Neutral Good or a True Neutral. I think. It's complicated.

The thing about the god Pan is based on something that actually happened in real life (reportedly). According to the Greek historian Plutarch, during the reign of Tiberius Caesar, a sailor, upon reaching Palodes, proclaimed that "The great god Pan is dead." Rick Riordan, the author of the books, then decided to turn this into an environmental message. Because Pan was the god of Nature and the wild places, after he died these places became more vulnerable to deforestation.
However, that person proclaiming "The great god Pan is dead" may have been a misunderstanding. The sailor may have overheard a group of people exclaiming, "Tammuz, the great god Pan is dead" and assumed they were informing a guy named Tammuz that Pan died. However, that sentence in Greek sounds very similar to "Tammuz the All-Great god is dead," referencing a different pantheon's own underworld-visiting myth.
I like the idea that Echidna thinks of demigods as monsters because, as in all the stories, they slay monsters. Like, that's their thing. Heroes like Hercules go out of their way to find and kill monsters simply because they're monstrous. So it makes sense that the mother of these monsters would hate demigods with a passion. And the added layer that she actually interacts with and teaches her children, unlike the gods, is interesting too. I mean, she's obviously not a good person, but millennia of seeing your children die to a specific group of people probably does something to a parent.
Echidna is knnwn in greek mythology as the mother of monsters. She is the wife of typhon, one of the greatest threats the olympian gods ever faced. Her children include some of the greatest monsters in greek mythology including cerberus (the three headed dog who guards the gates of hades), the hydra, the nemean lion (both killed by hercules), the sphinx and of course the chimera
And I think we can call Echidna Mother of Karens in this reaction universe. 😂
I don't think I read anything about Echidna when I read Greek mythology, so I remember her from Xena.
The voice in the river at the end wasn’t Athena. She was a naiad or a water spirit in the same way that the tree woman Grover talks to in an earlier episode is a dryad or a tree spirit. Poseidon is like a king of all bodies of water because all water eventually flows back to the sea so he sent one of the water spirits from his kingdom to send a message to Percy.
I wouldn’t have told her that. Let her figure things out herself.
That isn’t a book thing it’s a Greek mythology thing. She already said she doesn’t really have a understanding of Greek mythology so I am trying to help her fill in the blanks.

According to Uncle Rick, the Entrance to the Underworld is always found to the west, where the sun sets. Olympus is in the east, where the sun rises. In America, Olympus is in New York and the Entrance to the Underworld is in Los Angeles.

the parraells between medusa last ep and annabeth this ep makes me cry. medusa "embarrassed" athena by getting with poseidon (unwillingly) AND THEN ANNABETH GOT PUNISHED FOR PERCY SENDING HER HEAD TO OLYPMUS.

At the end of the day Medusa was lowkey right and Annabeth paid for her pride as a child of Athena
But Percy is the one who feels guilt while Poseidon is just...there
In the book there's no consequences for the impertinence. So this is a good change.
Fun fact. When Rick wrote the book he thought the water ran under the arch. So they had to create it for him to be pulled into the water lol. Was wondering how this would be done.
The woman in the water is a nereid, a sea nymph who works in Poseidons palace. "It is so hard for us all to stand back" "us" refers to all creatures that work for Poseidon. The sea nymph has to voice of Percy's mom and in the book he actually mistakes the nereid for his mom. (him being confused about her supposed death and all)
Pretty sure this is a minor spoiler dude, because she hasn't read the book so she will find out who that was next episode.. Just because she asks a question doesn't mean we should give her an answer if the episode itself doesn't give an answer yet because that's spoilers.

He’s technically the prince of the ocean so i think it is hard for the ocean to step back not to help him or anything. His dad is the king literally. The ocean has that amount of respect for him that if they could they would always protect and help him.

I like the contrast of how last episode Medusa said that Athena cursed her because Medusa embarrassed her, and then in this episode Athena put her daughter in mortal danger because Annabeth embarrassed her. Nice two episode contrast to really drive the point home about Athena’s pride and lack of caring when it is wounded.
The woman in the water calls herself a nymph. So basically percys dad must have sent a messenger to go and talk to him. Because his dad can't go and talk to him himself being one of the big 3.
18:14 i found it so funny how you yelled ahhhhh as he fell when that's exactly how it goes down in the books 🤣 the show dramatized it a lot (which i'm not mad about, i thought it was awesome) but in the book percy's POV is as follows, "I'd love to tell you I had some deep revelation on my way down, that I came to terms with my own mortality, laughed in the face of death, et cetera. The truth? My only thought was: Aaaaggghhhhh!"
The NYC/LA is just mostly geographical. The show doesn't really explain it but the premise of the series is that the Olympian pantheon moved with the heart of Western Civilization (i.e. Greece to Rome to HRE to France to Britain to the US) and that prominent places tend to emulate the ancient places. So the entrance to Hades is at the westernmost regions relative to Olympus. The Empire State Building becomes Olympus presumably because NYC was the most culturally significant centre when the 'heart of the West' moved to the United States in the early 20th century.
This might not be relevant because I haven't read the books and don't know the motivation of the author (and as many people have pointed out, Olympus and Hades aren't synonymous with Heaven and Hell) but...
I do find it interesting that New York has a place called "Hell's Kitchen" and Los Angeles is known as the "City of Angels", so I lowkey wonder if it could subconsciously be a flip of that? Because if it was like a Christian version of heaven and hell instead, it totally would have made sense to do it the other way, for those reasons 🤷
The person in the water is a River spirit and a servant to Poseidon sending a message. She had Sally’s voice to calm him down
Fun fact Walker Scobell the actor for Percy said that when he was "sick" they just didn't put any make up on him to hide his complexion. He's just naturally that pale, they just put some red make up around his eyes. He said since he's so pale, the light also added on to it.

I think that was actually a different scene, I think Rick said in a post on threads that he had makeup for this part and during filming people kept thinking he was actually sick and asking if he was okay
Somebody on twitter said that this first-half of the show is his hero origin story. And now that he knows he can breathe underwater and have started trusting his powers, he will be unstoppable from here on out.
Also since percy just learned that he can breath underwater even though he is scared of drowning. I cant wait for episode 5 and more main ship moments next episode!!
“Percy you little shit” is hilarious and sums up his character. Hes heroic buh also a little shit. This episode kinda changes some things like the last episode. The main change i didnt care for is athena setting up annabeth to die. Im sure in her perspective is like “if shes my daughter she’ll survive regardless with her wits” but to me its like, damn u let ur kid almost die. And poseidon’s like “I’m here for u son”. To be fair athena is kind of a bitch in the books and poseidon is more chill but this was kinda crazy to me
This is the same goddess that saw a human claiming to be better at weaving than her, challenged her on it, was defeated fairly and then as a result transformed her into a horrendous spider. Athena's just petty like that.
I mean she sent Annabeth and the rest of her kids into a death trap in the sequels, she fell to hell with her boyfriend and I don't think she's ever compensated for all of that damage
It does parallel the stuff that Medusa says. Poseidon/Percy got away with misbehaving and Athena blames Medusa/Annabeth for her wounded pride.

@movienightwithjacqui if i remember correctly, the Nymph that is speaking to Percy is supposed to have Sally's voice, which is what calms percy in that moment.
also the reason that she says that Poseidon has found it hard to stand back and not get involved is because it's very dangerous for the gods to even be around their kids. the only places that could really be safe for them to be around their kids are Olympus, and (depending on the parent) the underworld (even then, there's very few spots that would be safe there). that's why Camp Half-Blood exists: so that these demigods can have a footing in the mortal world while learning their abilities and to protect themselves
Two more fun facts for you!
1. You probably noticed how pale Percy's face was as the poison set in. His actor, Walker, said in an interview that the only thing the makeup team had to do to create that look was put some red around his eyes and leave the rest of his face untouched. The rest was up to lighting. He's THAT pale.
2. In the books, it's implied that the reason why LA has so many earthquakes is because the Underworld is just underneath the surface! So the earth shaking is because of the restless dead and their god! I love all the ways this story connects the ancient gods to the phenomena of the modern world. This won't be the last time we see something like this.
As a Harry Potter AND Percy Jackson AVID fan, I absolutely ADORE your constant Harry Potter references while watching Percy Jackson stuff. Makes me smile every time, I swear 😭

To be fair, Poseidon is mostly there for Percy (at least later in the books) and percy IS poseidon’s favourite child sooooooo
People are complaining that they keep leaving things out of the show from the books, the writing being bad, the acting being wooden, the cast not having chemistry, there being no stakes or sense of urgency, watered down from the book, not having suspense, too much talking, fights being way too short and bland, exposition dumping every episode, telling instead of showing and being underwhelmed etc and its really just hurt my mental health. I was enjoying it so much and these people have gotten into my head.
I’m so sorry the negativity has gotten to you! I’ve just started hearing it myself, and for whatever my opinion is worth, I think most of the criticism is hogwash. I’m really enjoying this series, and while I can understand why some people might feel the need to nitpick…why? Why not just enjoy it? I am! And I hope you’re able to as well 😄
If you care too much about the opinion of ppl online, you'll never enjoy anything. I've seen and joined discussions etc, but at the end of thw day when I sit and watch the episode, I have so much fun that none of that matters to me. There are so many great details that show how this series was made with care and love, and as a longtime fan of the books I feel very grateful and overjoyed. So my advice is for you to just turn off those voices and have fun. Enjoy it for what it is! You'll even find out that some of those takes are very ignorant or just not true at all (like the acting bit 💀 seriously the kids and also adults are eating up their roles here!)

12:54 I love that you caught that symbolism! I didn't myself, but it goes to show how much depth is in many of these shots. I think someone might have pointed that out to me from one of the trailers, although that can't be right since we wouldn't have known the context back then. I've loved the shot since the trailer because it was the first time we got a good look at Grover's distinct goat walk from the side.
I like how the only makeup Walker was wearing when he was poisoned was the redness in his eyes, the rest is just his natural paleness
I like how in Percy Jackson they kept one detail intact. The Gods and Goddesses of Olympus are prideful beings an I’m not exaggerating THEY ALL ARE but any form of disrespect whether by the minor gods/goddesses, mortals, heck even their own children they all lose favor to the higher ups.
Athena is no exception since she’s highly regarded as the Goddess of Strategic War and Battle Tatics an as expected, she’s disappointed in Annabeth for going along with Percy’s plan in delivering the head of Medusa, (Who’s she cursed by the way as read in the mythos.), which basically embarrassed her in front of the other Olympian Gods.

Me: Knuckles the Echidna. 🤣

Just a slight correction: all the "kinds of afterlife", good, bad, and neutral are in the underworld. Olympus isn't haven, its where the gods live. It may seam that way because of Christianity ideas, but is very important to see Greek mythology on its own.

@@movienightwithjacquiPlease don't mistake Hades for the devil. There are big differences. Hades isn't evil, though he does have his bad side. But someone had to be in charge of the Underworld, which, as others have noted, isn't equivalent to the Christian Hell.

I really love the extra nuance they injected into both Medusa and Echidna in the show. In later books in the series, Riordan leaned a lot more heavily into the ideas of what makes a monster a monster, and seeing the good in everyone even in those things that society deems wrong or monstrous. It's good to see the showrunners bringing those themes forward into the season 1 storyline as well, since it's such a big theme for especially the final book's plot.

Athena's deliberate neglect of Annabeth in this episode closely mirror's her disgust in Medusa from last week. Just like she did to Medusa, Athena punished her faithful daughter for something the son of Poseidon did and disregarded her life in the process. It reinforces the warning Medusa gave them last week about the gods' fickle and vicious nature. But also disproves it, because unlike what Medusa assumed, Annabeth was willing to put her righteousness aside for the sake of the quest by staying behind to die. And Percy was willing to stand up for someone he cared about even when it meant facing deadly consequences. What's incredible is that all of this was constructed for the show. You already know about the changes to last week's episode, and in the books the Arch was just a tourist attraction that Annabeth wanted to see while they were on a layover. Echidna didn't attack until she was alone with Percy at the top (because the elevator was too small/full for Percy to go down with his friends). The way the books handled it was also great, but the way the show expands on the central themes and struggles on this story by creating more connections, parallels, and consequences is astounding. These showrunners must know the soul of the source material like the backs of their hands -- everyone, not just Rick and Becky (his wife). The amount of love, care, and understanding that went into fleshing out these characters and their motivations is so breathtaking and beautiful and I feel so, so lucky that this exists.
The thing about the Greek Gods in this series is, we don't really know why they're so neglectful towards their children, but the most likely explanation is just that they really don't care that much to be in their children's lives. So yeah, they can be major jerks, remember, Zeus would take a shot at Percy if he was in his domain of the sky just because he suspects him, they are very petty.

I will mention since you did kind of hint jokingly in your commentary but ...Percy's mother does NOT know which God Percy's dad is. He never told her that he was Posiden. It's actually the case for the majority of the demigods within this world ...the god parent does not reveal exactly who they are which is why the claiming process in camp Half-Blood is a thing.... So yeah she just kind of vaguely knows that he's a Greek god but she doesn't know exactly which one he is... The show hasn't been clear about that but I'm almost positive that the book was very clear about it.

I thought Sally did know because Poseidon offered to take her to the ocean and build a palace for her but she refused? Although its been a while since i read the books so i might be remembering that wrong

She could see through the mist, so she must have known from the get-go. Plus, even if she couldn't, she met him at the beach, so she could've easily guessed which god he was

They USUALLY don't tell the human parent.
This was false. Its never fully stated what Sally knows, but with context clues in the books she totally did know more than she let on. Some stuff hasn't been revealed yet, but as the show has said, big three children are forbidden (there is a reason why). So Sally wasn't going to be telling Grover and Chiron that information until Poseidon reveals it himself, to protect the fact that Percy is a child of the big three. As percy's monologue stated at the beginning of the first episode, the more the demigod children know, the stronger their smell becomes and the more monsters they attract. Which is why Sally was giving him the whole demigod speech the night before taking him to camp.
Now Sally is a bit more unusual in the fact she knew the truth about Poseidon. Not all God's reveal themselves. Athena does, but she is a virgin goddess, so having a baby the normal way isn't happening and so giving a strange man his baby without making a baby would be a bit odd. @@movienightwithjacqui

The thing in the water was a Nereid. One of Poseidon's sea residents. He probably sent her as a messenger to Percy. Because... reasons, I guess 😅

It's starting to occur to me that having the captions on is actually a really nice way to know what/who the heck is talking, I would recommend turning them on, the water thing was a Naiad, Naiads are Water Nymphs, also you can think of them as Water Dryads

the LA and NYC location dig is pretty funny (as a SoCal resident myself) but technically in myth there is no "heaven" (or biblical hell for that matter) for ancient greeks the way you're thinking it! everyone goes to the underworld indiscriminately (depending on which era of the underworld myth you're referencing, later on they started to believe there was judgement between good and evil persons and then they were split up) and only gods and some demigods live on Olympus. so technically Rick indirectly or directly impliying that the seat of the pretentious, selfish power of the gods is up in new york while the place everyone generally goes in the after life is in LA is so funny to me personally, especially since most people conflate most afterlives with the biblical one and see this as a dig at LA, assuming the underworld is like hell and Hades is like Satan and the olympians as heavenly figures when Zeus and his kin aren't exactly the best of people themselves and Hades is considered to be one of the nicer gods (in comparison)
no, I don't think that in the water it was Athena, I won't say anything else, cause I don't know what they're gonna do with it in the show, but Athena wouldn't make sense, like she basically allowed Echidna to kill them, why would she try to save Percy now, she hates Poseidon.

One thing I didn't think about when I watched it but saw another reactor say it was when Percy tricked Annabeth to take her place to fight the Chimera, she said that was smart since her mother abandoned her for her impertinence and wasn't going to help, the only god that might help in that situation was Percy's dad. I don't think that's exactly what Percy was thinking when he did it though, he just thought he was probably going to die from the Chimera sting and wouldn't make it to Hades. But, her logic for that situation made a lot of sense. He did get help from his father, so his decision was luck...or fate? Also, the gods have rules they must abide, like was said in the 2nd episode, that demigods don't have to follow, so when the voice said to Percy that his father has always been with him and it was so hard for him to hold back, I believe it. Dionysus couldn't even get up to go get a bottle of wine for himself.
In case you were wondering, I haven't read the books (like you) and saw the first movie when it came out (like you) and don't remember much about it (like you). I'm loving this show though 'cause I was a little Greek mythology nerd as a kid and read my sister's college course Greek mythology book 'cause the stories were so interesting. Also, that take on Medusa being kinda a victim is not just some modern retelling of it. My sister was in college in the late 70s/early 80s (dating myself) and I was in grammar school when I read her book. It was kinda put that way in the book that Medusa didn't really do anything wrong (not to our standards) but was punished by the gods. That happened a LOT it seems that when humans got mixed up with gods, especially romantically, it rarely ended well for them. The gods were portrayed over and over as petty, selfish and prone to jealousy. Most humans don't have to deal with the gods directly, so that's good, but Percy's right, demigods have to deal with so much more crap. Sure, they get gifts for being half-god, but they also have a lot of trials and tribulations. Look at the most famous demigod, Hercules. SHEESH, the crap he had to go through. They made him kill his wife and kids by tricking him into seeing enemies! That's only one of the installments of crap that, I believe, Hera put on him. He's one of the few non-gods (if not the only one, can't remember) that was allowed into Olympus when he finally died because of how he kept overcoming the adversities put in front of him.
The way they did the chimera in this is pretty interesting, it's usually described as having a lions head, and goats head, and it's tail is a snake, but in this they kinda merged them all together. Personally it's giving more manticore, especially with the stinger, but it's still a cool design.

I don't know if anyone in the comments has said it or not. The woman in the water is not Athena, she is a Nereid, which is a sea nymph, this also puts her under Poseidon's domain being the God of the seas. This is why he sent her as a messenger, since he can't interfere directly he sent one of his "people" to offer aid on his behalf, it is a slight loophole.
The girl in the water was a naiad, or an ocean spirit. She was sent by Poseidon to help percy. Hope this helped lol.

Los Angeles is known as the City of Angels. I found that to be ironic that the entrance to the Underworld is in Los Angeles.
“It isn’t the gods who think that way, it’s everybody.” Is the point of Riordan’s works. The gods cannot exist except as extensions/distillation of human values. So Annabeth is totally correct when she says it’s not the gods. It’s people.
So the idea of Olympus over the ESB and the entrance to the Underworld being in LA is that the gods actually move with the center of Western Culture. They started in Greece, then went to Rome, spent a while in Europe, and then moved to America. And Olympus and other places of power went with them (as well as the monsters and their demigod kids).

well, the entrance to Hades is always in the far west, with Olympus being in the east.
That's a major reason New York (the biggest city in the Eastern United States) is the entrance to Olympus, while Los Angeles (the biggest city in the western United States) is the entrance to the underworld

Oh also- maybe there is some kind of hidden joke with Olympus being in NYC and the Underworld being in LA, but the canon reason is because the entrance to the Underworld is always in the west, so when the heart of their world shifted west, we have Olympus in the major east hub and the Underworld in the major west one. I do however like the joke idea because I'm from LA and just can't get myself to like NYC 😂 I LOVE what they have there like broadway, juilliard (my bff graduated from there), the met, etc; but it's so ard to breathe both physically and smell-wise 😂 public transportation is more abundant and established sure, but it's also always so crowded and muggy at any time of day that's not the lowest 💀 anyways lol

I know how you feel; I was so disappointed that this episode was shorter than the last one. I think my favorite character regardless has always been Grover, because somehow he’s much more relatable, and if anyone has an explained it to voice that you were hearing at the end was a Nereid named Eudora. The Nereids are the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris. They are minor sea goddesses and matrons of both sailors and fishermen.

We actually do know the reason! It's not very obvious in the show to someone who hasn't read the books, since it wasn't exactly voiced out loud, or directly at all. First, demigods are safest in the real world from monsters if they don't know they're demigods. Once they know, their scent becomes WAY stronger and "once they start coming, they never stop" (Grover, S1E1). That's why Chiron/Mr. Brunner and Grover tried to convince Percy too that there was never any teacher named Mrs. Dodds. Secondly, children of the Big Three are forbidden. Poseidon had to play is moves very carefully deciding when to claim Percy; because once he did, not only would bigger and badder monsters come after him (and do it with even greater motivation and personal malice), but so would the gods. Namely Zeus and Hades. Reasons they can't fly for transportation for example, like they mentioned on the bus. I'm loving your reactions!! Binging them right now to tide me over until tomorrow's new ep 😂 I'm glad I'm refreshing my memory as we go with the audiobook because you make great points that I'm only now remembering the book explains in further detail!
Just to clarify, Olympus=/=heaven, Hades=/=hell. Olympus is home of the gods, the underworld/Hades is the rhelm of the dead. If you insist on drawing Christian paralells, both "heaven" and "hell" (only using this termenology for simplicity) would be different feilds of the underworld. That would mean "heaven" is also in LA. Just thought I'd clarify that.

@@Personian The Christian paralells aren't really accurate. I was using them for simplicity sake in my comment (Olympus isn't in any way similar to Christian heaven of course being the biggest thing to discuss). Hades is much more "you do the crime, you do the time" than the straight up evil of "your finite crime will get you infinate torture" of the Christian god. I think a lot of people will be surprised to see that Hades isn't Satan when he shows up, while I haven't read the books I know enough about Riordan to know that he knows his stuff and for me as a Pagan (my Pagan journey ironically started when the leaders on a church mission trip to Nashville were for some reason brave enough to take us to the Parthenon replica, and I was fascinated by it as an architecture obscessed kid that loved my Puzz 3D models. I like having the Gateway Arch as a temple to Athena because the construction makes me believe it really is. I know Percey Jackson fans have thoughts on the Nashville Parthenon because of the movies being bad and changing the arch to the Parthenon but it's a real part of my Pagan development and thus holds a lot of spiritual weight for me, sorry) I'm loving the spiritual aspects of the show, and will likely get the audiobooks for my own quest to the west coast this spring that's in the name of teaching people about nature where I'll probably work in my religion some (I can tell they're good based on the show, even though I have heard a lot of people have said the show is better than the books they'll be good to have for the journey. Heck maybe it'll even inspire me to write a book myself. The Pagan traveling through LDS theocracy Utah will certainly make an interesting story).
