Granted this layover was not particularly interesting! ;) Although that particular shot was really just an indulgence because the "Riveting content" explosion bit cracked me up so much...
That mall in White Plains was....something! I don't think you'd be surprised to know that since this was uploaded, the Galleria closed on March 31st, 2023, and will turn into mixed-use commercial and residential development. That body of water you saw at 10:18 by Brewster is the Diverting Reservoir which is part of the NYC water supply system's Croton Watershed. The Diverting Reservoir holds 900 million gallons of water at full capacity, making it the smallest reservoir in the city's system. Its drainage basin is 8 square miles of the Croton River watershed. It receives most of its water from the East Branch River, which extends from the East Branch and Bog Brook Reservoirs. Diverting Reservoir is connected to the nearby Croton Falls Reservoir via a channel and dividing weir. Water usually passes freely between the two reservoirs. Water from the Diverting Reservoir flows into the continuation of the East Branch of the Croton River, into the Muscoot Reservoir and then into the New Croton Reservoir. After moving through the 24-mile New Croton Aqueduct, the water enters the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx and goes into NYC’s distribution system.
I went thru a whole range of emotion in this video: me at 0:00- "oh cool, Miles took a train to my city" me at 1:23- "yea, I'd get off at Stamford too, Penn sucks lol" me at 1:50- "I-Bus? hmmmm...." 3:00- "silly, now he's going the wrong way lol" 10:00- "finally he's going the right way" 10:35- "hey, that's my street" 10:55- "AAA Miles was by my house!" Going through my neighborhood was a nice twist, I legit didn't expect that. I was expecting the typical get off at Penn and doing the touristy spots everyone else does :D
Something very fun about your channel is I’ll click on a video titled “I Spent $19 to take Amtrak to New York” thinking it’ll be a standard NEC trip, and then I’ll do something else for a few minutes while it plays in the background and when I come back you’re standing outside an abandoned Sears waiting for a bus that you’re not sure exists.
I go to school around westchester and it's so wonky to see parts of westchester that I've never encountered (at least during the day, I do a large amount of my exploration at night on a bike). Westchester is literally fucking huge and I always forget. Also dammit i'm on the west coast over the summer and I miss the weirdly calming noise of the M7A's electric motors regeneratively breaking.
I love those old high floor buses. Reminds me of good times when I was a young boy when my family would take trips to the mall or the department store.
Not amtrak, but I have an idea for " cheapest way to get to..........." Why not Cape Cod? It fits for the season, we have the cape flyer and Peter pan, but is there another way?
Okay, I've looked into it (to Provincetown, because go big or go home!), and the CCRTA Boston Hospital Shuttle (milesintransit.com/2020/05/29/ccrta-boston-hospital/) reigns supreme as the cheapest if you're able to walk to one of the hospitals it serves. That said, I'd be coming from Cambridge, which would lead to a different and much more interesting route...
Honestly, all these moments of waiting at malls or any other vacant location and just having faith that the bus will deviate (enough into the parking lot) and be flagged down is crazy and cool at the same time. Makes me grateful to live by a street that has decent bus service week long and it actually takes you to a mall that is alive, but ironically I actually don't like malls so I barely ever take the bus for that purpose.
Nice video but it was somewhat of a surprise in that I thought the title would show you going to New York City at the start. Instead we saw your main start of your adventure at Stamford and then took a series of local busses and trains to finally get to NYC. But the title was correct in that we saw you on an Amtrak train from New York and had the extra in that you were on an Amtrak train on their 50th anniversary of the start of their service.
Unfortunately, this video is unwatchable. Win noise, constant jerky camera movement and pointless remarks makes something to abandon after watching part way. Never made it to New York!
Very confusing trip but entertaing anyway. The route manages to bring you to every dead mall in Westchester.
