- John Smith was an American actor who rose to fame in the 1950's. He was a formidable talent who has left behind a legacy of great work, much of which was in the western genre. His finest work was in the role of Slim Sherman in the immensely popular television series Laramie.
Great actor, John Smith. Wish we had more like him today. Those cowboys were the best!!!!
I wish we still had JOHN! We still have Robert. And he still misses "Smitty."
still watch it today..sick of the evil trash on tv..
Lots of trash now days Susan!
Susan nothing but crap been made since the 90s for the most part. But nowadays is the worst of all. Been wonderful if these shows could have been made with today’s technology.
A always loved and watched Laramie, and of course John Smith. This were the good old times!!!
Rest in peace, John Smith, whose taken name has a funny story to it. He shined as Slim Sherman and his show still is watched anew and bought anew by generations onward. Each episode holds real meaning, and John’s role was pivotal and although the studio had its issues, changing things abruptly season too season, Smith and Robert Fuller held it together for all. Production under John Champion of Laramie was amazingly well done, the scripts and stories and direction all held real meaning. “A Sound of Bells”, as one of my favorite Laramie episodes.
We miss and love John, a gentleman and an honorable, “decent” man.
May God rest his lovely, funny, intelligent soul
My husband and myself watch Laramie on the Encore channel every afternoon. Watched it when I was a little girl with my dad and now as a senior citizen with my spouse. Good series.
Yes bring back the good films at
Rerun time please
I just discovered Laramie a few months ago on a network named Grit TV. I am hooked. John Smith and Robert Fuller were outstanding. They were just naturals. This series was done before I was born. I have so much fun spotting actors that I only really knew of in their later years and seeing them when they were young. Actors like Eddie Albert, Ernest Borgnine, Cloris Leachman, James Coburn, Nanette Fabray, Jim Davis, George Kennedy, Charles Bronson etc. Laramie is a great show. R.I.P. John Smith.
The Law of Divine Oneness see, I hate that they don't make these announcements in the. news.didn't know he passed...rip my hero
Same here, just discovered this show myself and I love it!!
I believe what made "Laramie" such an outstanding series was that it was so realistic. Almost no sound stage settings. Outdoor with waterfalls, canyons, rivers, mountains, great horseback riding (which produced great butts on John and Robert Fuller), and authentic town.
Robert Fuller always got second billing below John Smith, even though he frequently carried an entire show himself without Smith.
P Fulton
I noticed that too! They actually shot outdoors and the show was realistic and every situation probably happened in real life at some point. And I like that some shows mainly featured Slim and some featured Jess Harper and some were them both together. What a Great Show! I’m glad I found out about it only because of Grit TV Cable Channel that features Westerns. I’m sad that John Smith is gone but if he was anything like Slim he was a great guy! I like how he treats Jess Harper like he’s his kid brother and they kid around!
I’m surprised this show wasn’t as big as Bonanza, Wild Wild West or Gunsmoke!
Laramie is every bit as good as any of those shows and I think its actually better! So it’s better late than never and I’d like to buy the whole show on DVDs!
Thankfully Robert Fuller is still alive to see the Resurgence of this show at 85! I’m so glad he gets to see the show get more popular than ever! It’s like Grit TV gave it a second chance!
God Bless them both and RIP John Smith -What a great guy! Authentic and Real!

These are great to have since most are gone now...Thanks for the posting of this series. I have always been a fan of old westerns...
John Smith
It's been a wonderful trip down memory lane watching Laramie again. Love John and Robert and it's so much fun watching all the actors from that era guest star. Reminds me just how old I am too. I wasn't in my teens when it began; can't say that when it ended. Enjoying all the old westerns on Metv and INSP. Get Laramie in black and white in the morning for 2 hours and in color in the afternoon. Such fun!
terry nolan isn't it fun!
all I can say is they broke the mold when he was born all I can say is he came down from heaven like an angel
And Robert Fuller top actors top guys
I recently started watching Laramie on GRIT, and have become a big fan of the Show, and John Smith. The man was Cool.
Smith was a good actor, and seems like a really cool guy. "Laramie" was one of the best shows, and he was terrific on it.
I'm still watching Laramie on GRIT TV LOS ANGELES...
Mee, too, here in Indianapolis. GRIT is the best channel ever.
Iam still waching it in Australia
Getting old we miss the actors we grew up with .There will be a great gathering in heaven God Bless You for bringing back some very happy memories.
Watch it as a little girl, with my mom and dad, now watch it everyday with my husband, Laramie was and still is a great cowboy movie series. I just love watching John Smith so darn handsome.
He seems as nice as his character on Laramie.
I Love that show. Slim n Jess are the best!!
I’m 52 and started watching Westerns with my grandfather back around 1969 or 1970. I really watched them on my own in 1973 because I had a crush on John and Robert. RiP John Smith - “SLIM” you’re dearly missed
I wish John Smith could have been added onto the permanent roster of "Emergency". He had great chemistry with Robert Fuller and would have been a great fit.
Dustin Blythe I think he did one episode of Emergency! as Capt. Hammer; I remember him handling the K-12 saw and wearing a faceshield, rescuing a trapped burglar in an air shaft.
WE MY SISTER AND I WATCH LARAMIE EVERY DAY DOESN'T MATER HOW MANY TIMES WE SEEN IT BEFORE AND IM OLD ENOUGH THAT I SAW SUNSET CARSON IN PERSON LOVE WESTERN MOVIES.
@@ronaldrobertson2332 Apparently, he had an offer for his character to be recurring, but he turned it down. Shame it would have been great if he was a regular
Still watch Laramie today every day.
Today July 29 is mine and Robert Fuller's Birthday. Robert Fuller and
John Smith are my cowboy Sweethearts always will.
HAPPY GREAT BIRTHDAY ROBERT
FULLER
Y

🤩
Absolutely love John Smith on Laramie. Wow. He and Robert Fuller, had such great chemistry on that show. Such a talented and very handsome man. Love him.
So long slim. you are missed
I don’t even watch regular tv, only cowboys for me! God Bless all the cowboys....
l love watching old westerns and I especially love Laramie. John Smith was so handsome and a great actor. I have some Laramie shows on DVD. I watch them on TV four times a day. Good clean shows......not so much regarding the current shows today. I miss John Smith.
I Love Laramie. And I love John Smith. He was very handsome, good natured and a great actor. Sad he's not her anymore, but he will always be here in Laramie. I look at it everyday.
So glad that starz bought the rights to Laramie. All in hd and Dolby sound . All episodes of all seasons. It is so wonderful to watch these old shows in hd.
Watching GRIT WESTERN channel with my dad. Brings back memories! Sure were lots of jerks and bad guys passing through Laramie! I really enjoyed this video. Thanks!
I've only been watching Laramie the last year or so. It was before my time. Cool show. I knew Robert Fuller sort of from other shows, but not John Smith. He does have a particular goodness to him. It is true that a segment of America is long gone, although I'm not sure actors really represented what the Old West was really all about. I don't think they were this polite.
Awesome men, love Lamamie !!!!!!
I AM NOW IN MY FIFTIES AND I LOVE WATCHING THE OLD COWBOY MOVIES-ESPECIALLY THE OLD BLACK AND WHITE CLASSICS. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I NEVER GAVE IT A THOUGHT OF WATCHING THESE MOVIES. GOOD TO SEE JOHN SMITH IN LARAMIE. HE WAS A VERY HANDSOME MAN THEN AND LOOKING AT HIM NOW ON INTERVIEW, HE STILL LOOKS GOOD.
Love watching Laramie and Tales of Wells Fargo on Grit! These are the best of tv! Hope they don’t try to erase this history or take them off because of the war on guns.
loved his work on the great western laramie,he had such great chemistry with robert fuller another actor who i love.
I'm 63 yrs. Old and watched this guy come full circle! Great actor! Him and fuller on Laramie was one of the old great ónes along with Bonanza, Rifleman, and a few others! See em'a here on YT is great!😀
wish we could have some good old westerns on tv like they use to have. I watch Laramie all the time. Now a days tv time is wasted by talk shows that spew hatred.
Thank you so,so much!

Longtime friend Robert Fuller.
Good actor 😊
I believe John was a good man , love him
I have always enjoyed watching him on Laramie and could not imagine anyone else playing Slim.
They originally cast Smith for the Jess part. But Fuller talked his way into the Jess part and Smith switched to play Slim. Thank goodness.

John Smith and Robert Fuller were great !, Laramie is one of my favorite westerns, so is Gunsmoke! Thanks for sharing this. 😊
I LOVE LARAMIE AND JESS AND SLIM...I DIDN'T COME HERE TO DISCUSS POLITICS, SO KNOCK IT OFF.
True white men. Not a racist bone in Slim or Jess. I'd love too work for and listen to their stories, as well as having them as friends.
I love slim god I don't think of him gone I Just think of him off cowboy movies cause I see him every day in the morning and in the. afternoon I wish I could get all the 139 acts on Laramie I on dvd any one know where I can get them I also see him on cimmiron city
Great actor, love him.
My western heroes of the 50's and early 60's were great role models for boys. They were certainly a force for good.
Johnny Mac hey, im a girl and live in the city, but my cowboy code has served me well. i sleep well at nite...
I love watching Laramie still today. I can dream of a day, turning on the TV and there's a brand-new episode of Laramie. Just imagine how great that would be!
I watch Laramie every day now I would like to say thank you Mr. Robert for quality acting love the show I can relate to ole Jess sure would like to meet you but funds are limited on disability I live in Louisiana so if you ever get this way I'm in Elizabeth louisiana I'd love to bar b que for you my name is Tim Tyler . March 6th 1931- January 25th 1995 aged 63.
For those interseted...this clip is circa 1982. This and several other clips were filmed for a show that Sunset Carson wanted to air but he passed on before it could happen.
Demi Elliott thank you. I like to know dates...
Thanks
Wow, so Laramie had been gone only about twenty years, and here after sixty years since it started, Laramie still draws new fans. Pretty dang impressive.
I saw Laramie for a first time about a year ago. I was so hooked, that I went (from Europe) to MidSouth Nostalgia Festival in June 2023 to see Robert Fuller❤. He is 90 and so unbelievably gorgeous. So sad John Smith❤ abandoned us in a such young age.
Loved This Show.
Wonderful format and so professionally accomplished. Thanks for sharing.
My wife and I still enjoy "Laramie today we are both in our 70's❤😄💪🏿
Just discovered this on Grit! I grew up watching reruns of shows like Gunsmoke and Laredo with my parents so I am surprised I'd never seen this show before!
It too bad but this is the ONLY interview with john Smith I can find. You cant screw with SLIM SHERMAN
Sadly he died way too young. You see a lot of Robert Fuller because, bless him, he’s still going strong.
Looking at the grips on that gun John is holding makes me think it might be the same one he wore on LARAMIE.
Maybe he got to keep it. I know Fuller brought his own gun to the show and even used it when Laramie ended and he went to Wagon Train.
I watch Laramie on Grit TV @5:00pm & 6:00pm. I watched Laramie when it aired on NBC. Hoagy Carmichael wrote my favorite song Star Dust.
Michael Quarry loved hogie too
I'm on S4 of Laramie. I just luv it. A great and wholeome show🕊
What a wonderful Actor John Smith, MAY YOU REST IN PEACE ALWAYS, YOUR FAN😀😀😀😀🙂
A great actor in Laramie continued to rest in power!
I watch Laramie on grit el paso tex every day hope Laramie continue I started watching it about 6months ago I'm hooked on watching it everyday
The airplane noise kinda ruins the 'old western' mood! But this guy still has it!
So sad that they are all gone and I do agree that they should do more western moves like they use to
Robert Fuller aka Jess Harper is still with us.
Thank you so much for sharing
nothing like real cool cowboy's.
I loved John Smith he was a very good man and actor, now all three of them are gone 😢 now may God bless there souls 🙏 rest in peace, so good to hear them talk especially John Smith what a treat it was to listen to them talk 👄 ❤️ 🙏 💙 😢 ♥️
he was a fox with his tight jeans
John Smith great cowboy RIP
I love Laramie me and my dad watched it before he passed
I have seen all the Laramie episodes
I like John Smith
He said he would stay single, to heck with that marriage stuff.
at least to heck with the alimony stuff
These are real men. Not the manginas today.
You do know that they were acting right? Kinda like Trump.
They were great at what they were doing, trump on the other hand doesn't have a clue
Janet Martin Sad but true. And we have 4 years of that sociopath being in office. It's like a bad dream.
Stuuupid , using this to hate on Trump . If John were alive im shure he would be happy the man came along to save us from the likes of hillabeast
Trump didn't just ''come along.'' He has been in the public eye for many years. Mainly on the WWE., the Celebrity Apprentice and Home Alone 2. He has no government experience, no ideology and no core convictions. What could go wrong? smh
great actor
Laramie ... My favorite Western Series. John Smith was a great actor.

The sound was so low all I could hear was the laughing! I tried to turn it up!
David Coffman by
"stayed single" Amen to that John You had a rough time RIP
I loved watching John Smith and Robert Fuller on Laramie. John was a handsome man. My husband and I watch old westerns on TV. The Lone Ranger, The Durango Kid movies, etc. Sorry that John Smith is no longer with us.
