Fun fact: the voice actor for Donald is the same guy from the '87 series, just with 30 more years of practice. On top of the training from the ORIGINAL Donald Duck VA, who hand-picked this guy to take over the role.

Yeah; it so happened that Tony Anselmo had a passion for voice imitations of Disney, but he couldn’t quite get Donald down. But Clarence Nash showed him, and mentored him because he would be dead in less than a year (and most people didn’t know). The fact that Anselmo had never wanted to be an actor but takes it so seriously to uphold Bash’s legacy, that he ALWAYS plays Donald, is so meaningful… even if a project is bad, he’s giving it his all. And yes, he’s only gotten better; he was rusty in the 80s in that he couldn’t do as much emotive range, but has gotten considerably better with time.

That's not unique to this series as Mickey's friends have regular voice actors that usually only get recast after the old one dies but it is unique to donald as he is one of the two characters in this show (the other being goofy's guest appearence in the third season) who retain thier regular voice actor for this show
Glomgold is very much intended to be an over-the-top Scottish stereotype, because he’s meant to serve as a foil to Scrooge, and his “realistic” Scottishness.

"Curse me kilts" is actually one of Scrooge's most popular catchphrases, along with "Bless me bagpipes." Davud Tennant is so perfect for the role. Also, Donald is voiced by Tony Anselmo, his main voice actor since 1985, and professionally trained by the original. Ironicly, not being able to understand himshows how great he is at the role.
He is an absolute legend.

"What in Dismal Downs..." is also a semi-frequently used Scrooge-ism. It was fun to hear them slip one in when he discovered the kids in the 'trophy room'.
That character that driving the car in the submarine is an iconic character. His name is launchpad Mc quack concert. The character is he crashes everything but he’s a beloved character in this universe.
Fun fact: Huey, Dewey, and Louie have always been referred to as Huey, Dewey, and Louie, in that order. So when giving them distinct personalities for the first time with this series, they treated that as their birth order- giving them personalities based on the stereotypical Oldest, Middle, and Youngest child traits.

I noticed that they were given characters, but I never noticed the age order stereotype. Huey: the responsible one, Dewey: the attention-seeker, and Louie: evil. Standard three siblings.

Obviously the rift between Donald and Scrooge happened because Scrooge insisted on attending a fancy dinner party in glory of him becoming the richest duck in the world, and Donald choked on one of those plastic spears for appetizers, which fucked up his throat and made him sound like he does now. I would be pissed too

Webby is voiced by Kate Micucci, probably best known as Sadie in Steven Universe. She does very much pour on the screechy delivery in her first scene, but that's really just because Webby is so excited to have someone to talk to and she quickly relaxes into her regular voice.
I guess as a voice actor that might be where she is known from but I know her best as Oates from Garfunkel & Oates

The mom reveal was such a big thing when this aired! If I remember correctly, before this all we really saw of her was in rare comic appearances, most of which were just references. She's one of the biggest mysteries of the franchise, and it's handled brilliantly in this show!
From what I remember, all we had was a single note from her when the triplets showed up for - like - forever. Even the official McDuck family tree had her space covered up. So this really was massive.
@@Brasswatchman I mean, technically only their father's portrait was always covered up in the family trees you can find of the McDuck family because he was officially out of the picture before the twins were born. You can still see her picture without obstruction when you look at the family trees.

@@Brasswatchman She also shows up as a silent childhood cameo in Rosa's Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, and before this show there was a more recent Danish comic that gave her a full adult speaking role while explaining her absence.
Later in the series, Keith Ferguson also pulls off a decent South African accent for a character called Duke Baloney, and since Scottish and South African are both notoriously difficult for Americans to fake, let's all give the man a round of applause.
Odd that they add a new south african character and make Glomgold scottish because in the comics, Glomgold is Boer.

This show is full of references to not only the original DuckTales but all the Disney shows that were on the Disney Afternoon TV block around the same time as the OG DuckTales
And the original comics.
I love Donald. The reboot does an incredible job with him.
With Launchpad well him being a skilled pilot who always crashes is a huge part of his character. But the fact that he flies a plane and pilots a sub with ease despite Scrooge not knowing he a pilot is pretty impressive.
Launchpad is a very competent pilot, even though he always crashes. It's not just anyone who can crash a plane face first into the ground, and have himself and EVERY SINGLE PASSENGER walk away not only alive, but completely unscathed.
The artstyle thing with paper textures and character designs is based on comic books, since that's where they first originated
Huey, Dewey and Louie's mother being a part of this was actually a huge surprise when this show started; she's almost completely absent in the comics and other adaptations (not dead or anything, they've just been living with Donald for so long they're more like his children than his nephews)
I believe, though, in their very first ever appearance, the tripplets were nephews of Daisy. Donald had top put up with their hellraising while waiting for Daisy to get ready for their date.

You missed how monumental that "Mom" reveal was. We had never seen Hewey, Dewey and Lewey's parents in animation until this scene. They had always just been alongside Donald or Scrooge in past shows.

Don't let Mosco find out that the Spear of Selene actually enables time traveling and Scrooge really doesn't want the nephews to know that he is a time traveling version of Donald, after he got elocution lessons.

Season one is very Dewey focused. Same with season two for Louie. Huey kinda gets the short end of the stick because his season was the last one and they had to wrap everything up but he’s my personal favourite of the nephews, I just like his character type a lot.
Edit: I should add that there are episodes through all of the show for each one. The overall plot in the season is what I’m mostly referring to
So, yeah, in the comics The Joke about the triplets is usually that they're practically the same person, to the point where they'll usually say one third each of every sentence they deliver.
In DuckTales 2017, like Quack Pack, they have more distinct personalities, though:
Huey is the most like the traditional comic book triplets. He's the responsible, book-smart one.
Dewey is the reckless, adventurous, fame-seeking one
Louie is the scheming but kinda lazy one. Also the evil triplet.
Webby, meanwhile, has aspects of all three (book-smart, adventurous, capable of scheming), while also being the socially awkward one.
Louie is the *morally ambiguous* triplet, let's put it that way. At least until Season 3, anyway.
Also, each of the triplets represents a specific aspect of Scrooge:
- tougher than the thoughiest (Dewey)
- smarter than the smartiest (Huey)
- sharper than the sharpiest (Louie)

Technically, this is actually the first two episodes, which were released at the same time and shown back-to-back: “Whoo-oo!” and “Escape To/From Atlantis”. In case you worry about missing an episode.
Actually they were originally one single episode, but the Disney Plus releases split all the hour long episodes.
This show is such a gem. The artstyle inspired by the original comics, the fresh takes on the characters, great humor, and the perfect casting of David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck. I so excited to watch your journey through this series.
The original Scrooge McDuck voice, Alan Young, was born Angus Young in England near the Scottish border to Scottish parents though he moved to Canada at age 6 where he grew up. Is that Scottish enough? :)
My dad’s middle name is named after Alan Young and I’m named after my dad so Alan Young holds a special place for me. Although, David Tennant does have him beat for a Scottish Scrooge voice.
If you pay close attention to the background, it includes a lot of references to the the original DuckTales Cinematic Universe. Some in this episode include the place Dewey tried to drive the boat to, Cape Suzette (the primary location of the show TaleSpin), the marbles given to the boys (originally they had a set of marbles that served a key role in a set of episodes, one being replaced by a pearl and the shooter being used to get them out of a trap), the doll stuck to Webby's wall with an arrow (Webby's original design), one of the people next to Donald in the interview lobby (Roxanne, Goofy's son's girlfriend from a Goofy Movie and House of Mouse), and the giant disk that the triplets and Webby hid behind from the ghost, sword, and horse (it has the same symbol as the Temple of the Golden Suns, and all of their coins, from the first five-episode storyline from the original series). There's a *lot* more than just these, but I didn't want to write a full essay's worth of references.
It shows that the creators grew up with the original shows, and are making this as a proper homage, rather than a cash-grab, which I will always appreciate.
That is why this reboot is worth watching. It was made by people who loved the show and the comics, it is not just some easy cash grab and no ideological propagandistic revisionism.
How to remember the triplets:
Dewey--Dew, as in water
Louie--L, as in leaf
Huey--Hue, as in red
Yeah, the last one doesn't work, but it's what I use.

My favorite part of this show is how it plays with so many actually legends and mythologies, and as a suck up for mythology, I can’t help but love it for that 😂
This show is basically the diamond in the rough for reboots
Can't wait for Disney to mess this up by making a live action remake of DuckTales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, starring Saoirse Ronan as Uncle Scrooge and Usher as Uncle Donald.
She-Ra was a reboot too, and I think that was better than this.

Donald's girlfriend was named Selene, while fighting off the Beagle Boys, Scrooge threw a spear and accidentally impaled her. Donald hadn't talked to him since until now.

I grew up with the original and i absolutely love this version too. This show is how you do a reboot properly. Louie was instantly my favorite of the triplets.
My favourite episode is the one where it's revealed that Duckworth, Scrooge's butler from the OG Ducktales, is actually the big bad of the series. Goosebumps!
No way is it as good as the kids' mother being the ultimate Anti-hero! Nor the identity of Darkwing!

No spoilers, but you are in for a fun ride. This series is one of the very few reboots that not only respects the original series. It expanded on it.
The moment at the end with the mother revealed really got me. As someone who had watched the original show from back in the days (yes I know, I'm old) it got me instantly interested that here they acknowledged that there has to be a mother for Huey, Dewey and Louie.
Hell, they hadn't even covered that in the Carl Barks comics! This was brand-new ground.
If you're a Disney fan, this series goes for the DEEP CUTS. I'm talking stuff you haven't seen in decades.
My favorite episode is where the Headless Man Horse stalks the kids during Halloween only for it to be revealed he just wanted their candy. And then he can't eat it anyways because his head is stone.
Can't wait for the Darkwing Duck crossover episode where it's revealed Negaduck is Darkwing's father.

The reason Donald and Scrooge had a falling out is because Scrooge accidentally hit Launchpad, Donald’s former best friend, with the Spear of Selene, which broke his mind and changed him from a brilliant adventurer to a bumbling himbo
I've always loved Ducktales and I love that this series took what was great about the original series and then improved the rest. For instance, in the original series, the triplets have the exact same personality and are indistinguishable aside from their different colors - but for the reboot, they have been given distinct characterizations and separate story arcs, which is great. And Webby was the "token whiny girl" in the first series who didn't do anything but throw tea parties and complain about the boys, but they totally revamped her for this and let her be as much - or more - of an adventurer than the boys. And Mrs. Beakley also got a total revamp. Donald also didn't factor into it before, but he's such an important part of the reboot and I'm so glad they've decided to include him.
And perhaps the most important part -- we finally get to actually learn about the triplets' mother, Della, and what happened to her. All in all they did a fantastic job with the reboot, and I'm glad you've picked it up!
Here's a fun fact, turns out that Scrooges favorite song is in fact "the Irish rovers- Donald, where's your trousers?"
Ah hell yeah! This series and David Tennant (The Tenth Doctor) kicked ass!! And it had the voice of freakin Sonic the Hedgehog as Dewey.
Fun Fact: The blue sailor uniform in the beginning was what DOnald wore in the original DuckTales series. The black sailor uniform is what he wore in the comics.
Also, Webby action has the best Metal Gear Solid theme tune.
Fun fact: a group of vultures are called a committee of vultures so Scrooge is meeting with the committee there.

One of the best examples of a reboot revival with so many members of the cast we love! David Tennant (freaking Dr. Who!) is fantastic as Scrooge, I love Ben Schwartz (Dewey’s just another fun blue character in his catalog), Katie Micucci for Webby (who you’ll definitely like going forward). I LOVE THIS CAST!!
The Spear of Selene is a cursed magical item. Donald was hit with the curse which is why he's so accident prone and sounds so unintelligible. Donald blamed Scrooge for that, but as a double ironic twist, him staying away from Scrooge made the curse worse due to Scrooge's natural good luck.

Donald and Gladstone used to be one person of average fortune, until the curse of the Spear of Selene split them into two entities, one cursed with bad luck and one cursed with great luck.
Fun fact: You can see Donald's classic blue shirt at the start of the episode, but after getting the job he got a black shirt, this is a reference to the classic Donald comics (where the series takes a lot of inspiration apart from the 87 show) where he wore a black shirt, the reason of this was for printing problems but stayed as an aesthetic choice

... okay, sorry, I should explain that one for other commenters. H.P. Lovecraft was an early horror writer who pioneered the whole "journal left behind by a doomed protagonist" trope. In one of his stories, he literally had a guy writing down what was happening to him as a hideous beast is dragging him off down a staircase.
You're in for quite the treat, Ducktales 2017 is probably the best cartoon reboot out there. So much love and care was put into it, there's also so many references and cameos from other Disney cartoon characters.

The Spear of Selene is actually a spear belonging to the goddess Selene. In the episode we learn about the spear, we also learn that Selene is the mother of the triplets and Donald actually is their father.
This show is one of the very few times when the reboot is better than the original.
Mos when you get to it, the cast did a live reading for a season 1 episode that you can find on UA-cam. If nothing else you need to hear David Tennant pretending to be Glomgold.
Launchpad is actually a very good pilot outside of not being able to land for shit. Even though he crashes every time everyone on board always walks away from it no worse for wear. It's what makes him worth keeping around during dangerous adventures.
Man it’s really crazy how Scrooge killed Donald with the spear of Selene then had to resurrect him by killing the triplet’s mother
In season three, Walt Disney himself invades Scrooge's Vault to steal all of his wealth. In that episode Donald becomes a unicorn also.
Sea Shanties are all well and good- gotta love “Wellerman”, “Hoist the Colours”, “The Wave-Soaked Maiden”, “Uk’otoa”, etc- but true shanty enthusiasts know Space Shanties are the future- “Pull the Curtain Part the Veil”, “Stellaris: Aquatics”, “Space Shanty, by the Senate”, “If It Flies, It Dies!”, “Long Dead Star”, “Pushin’ the Speed of Light”, etc.
Fun facts about the voice cast: Sam Riegel, the voice director for the show and who does a couple of voices in season 1, is also Scanlan Shorthalt from Legend of Vox Machina, hence why Tennant appeared in the pilot episode of that.

I may be completely wrong, but I felt that the "inked comic book" style of the series was chosen as a deliberate homage to "the Duck Man" Carl Barks' epic adventure comics that inspired the original _DuckTales_ series.

You mentioned the background texture being like printed paper. It's a big reference to how both this version of the show and the previous iteration of Ducktales were both based on the Disney Duck comics by Carl Barks. Donald himself was created by Walt Disney, of course, but the city of Duckburg and many of it's inhabitants, including Scrooge and the triplets, were created by Barks for the comics.

As someone who grew up on the original show and went to the theater to see Ducktales the Movie when it released as a kid, as well as the spin-off series Dark Wing Duck (Launchpad was a main character in that show its a goddamn spin off), this was an amazing remake series. I loved this Duck Tales show
The art direction looks like paper because the series is based off of the DuckTales comics that were very popular in Europe.
The Carl Barks comics are extremely well regarded in the US too, if not as well known if they should be. (Which isn't to say the European comics didn't do some amazing stuff, from what I hear. Papernik, right?)
27:30 No spoilers, but before the Ducktales 2017 reboot, there was literally only ONE appearance of the triplet's mother in ALL Disney media EVER. So her even being alluded to after all this time was a major bombshell.
Be warned however, looking up that appearance is a slight spoiler (as the writers of this show wanted to be as respectful as possible to all prior media).
Unrelated to all that, there were rumors that their father would have made an appearance, albeit likely in a flashback, had they continued for a fourth season as was initially anticipated. A lot of fan works have him as a friend of Donald who was in the Army (complementing Donald, who was in the Navy).

This show was a very pleasant surprise for me when I first watched it. I love that they gave the triplets their own personalities rather than essentially being one character, as well as gave Webby more personality than just being "the girl one". Also, this is probably my favourite iteration of Scrooge (Though the Carl barks comics' portrayal of him is also very good).
