He was my first modern bass hero (after the classics like Geddy, Geezer, Mel Schacher, etc.) when I was a budding 13-year-old bass player. I taught myself to play by playing along with Rush, Sabbath, GFR, other classic stuff, and the Dave Matthews Band (mostly Under the Table and Dreaming and Before These Crowded Streets), on my first bass, a cheapie OLP Stingray. 20 years later, I'm reminded of those early days learning Stefan's awesome bass lines, and I own the real Music Man basses of my dreams (a Sterling 4 H and a Sterling HS), soon a short-scale Stingray) among quite a few others. I REALLY hope the Sterling gets the 'Special' treatment like the Stingray did, I dig what they've done with them and I'd love to see it on my MM weapon of choice. And yeah, oil/wax-finish Music Man necks are the absolute greatest money can buy.
My old '89 Stingray 5 makes me feel like Stefan described as heavy as it is. Got it used and I mean USED but it is my go to five string and I have three including this one and I love them all.
Its so funny you mentioned being happy and In love, I borrowed my buddies copper 04 sr5 and litterly fell in love.and traded him my 18 barolo bongo which is a top of the line bass for the sr5 which is just a beast of a bass, I had to have her. Thats my girl
having owned an original 77 MM stingray I loved the range of sounds and feel it had. It was stolen so with the insurance $$ I tried the Ernie Ball version and thought it was a cheap attempt to recreate the original. I'd love to try the new generation and see if they recaptured that ol MM. Having moved from Alembic to now owning a 68 Jazz and a 4001CS Ric I don't miss having that anchor around my neck. Only drawback to the original bass.
A wrap. It kills the unwanted overtones from open strings without muting the tone of the fretted notes. Used to be you used tape or foam or cloth under the bridge, those wraps work for getting a less muted tone.
Is there really enough of a difference between the 4H and 4HH model to warrant the extra dollars? What are you really getting with a 4HH model that you cannot get with the 4H? Thanx .....
Not for me, but if I was a Stingray guy instead of a Sterling player, I might feel differently. The series/single/parallel switch on the Sterling (also the SR5) gives you three quite distinct tones from just the one pickup, which is all I can imagine needing or even wanting. The versatility while still being simple, to me, is the magic of a Music Man bass. With a 4-string Stingray (or 5-string Stingray Classic), however, all you get is both coils in parallel, so it might indeed be worth it/desirable. If you can find a Music Man dealer within driving distance (fortunately I'm about 20 minutes from one), I'm sure they'll have one or two of each to try out, only you can really determine which one is most up your alley. The price difference is small, and at the prices these basses sell for essentially negligible.
I always asked myself "why I don't like musicman ?". Is it normal that I always heard a musicman as the same way as an de-tune piano ? At 2:00 (specially the last note, same effect at 2:25) I feel that hamonics are not tuned with the note. This is not a troll, I just feel sad to not appreciate a legendary bass.
I guess the intonation isn't right and I think that the focus of the pickups on the treble frequencies pronounces that. (0:08 - the saddles are all pretty much at the same position, seems impossible if that is the right string length for the B string)
Some would venture to guess it's the oversized pole pieces/ strong magnets. It may be. My old music man had a wobble that I couldn't get rid of, I was young, got frustrated and sold it. Those basses do record well, however.
Those Neo magnets have to be adjusted lower than the Alnico and ceramics do. They do cause pull on the strings if they are too high. Creates sting buzz and harmonic issues
Yea, I hate to agree, but I do. Not a single one of the colors on the Stingray Specials are good at all. Hell, a lot of the Ray34/35 colors and tops look way, way better.
A great promo video featuring a serious bassist on a very serious bass!!!
One of my favorite band's bassists playing my dream bass? What's not to love about this?
IDK how great that bass is but he sure makes it sound amazing! Stefan is a mind blowing bass player!
I bought one and everything he says about it is true
Quite the bassist. I remember him when he was like 17, with DMB. Great work.
dreaming tree is my fav bass line by him and he played it right off the bat lol
I just watched stefan use these 2 basses on july13/14th
Wow do they sound incredible.
Me too!!! Spac
That's a thoughtful way of expressing "in the pocket." New Stingrays look and sound incredible.
When he talks about the ergonomics- so true.

I love the dreaming tree, one of my all time favorites of theirs. As well as crush lol
stefan is a goat. plus i love seeing that Eden World Tour rig behind him! 50/10 bass tone.

I just bought that exact bass. I hope I like it as much as my Warwick Thumb.
Perfectly happy with my Classic Series Hybrid Stingray 5!!!!!

What's that mute he's using over the nut?
It's to clean up the sound and prevent noise from open strings or when changing positions on the fretboard, etc. I hate seeing players use them.
@@och70 it's actually mostly used to mute the sound from the strings behind the nut here. It's no playing aid. It just cleans up the sound
Also not necessary unless your playing a six string or above.

Marcie Warner Yes it is worth it. A much wider range of tones. If you’re going to get a Stingray, the HH is a no brainer
personally, i prefer just the single pickup. the neck pickup is in the way for me when i pop.

I have a 4HH and a 4H. I like tbem both but if I had to part with one it would be the 4HH. The 4H just sounds richer!

I'm with you on that. They have ALWAYS sounded a bit off to me too and I want to appreciate it more. I just can't.

that pick guard shape is horrible. i was waiting for new music man colors.. disappointed. just gonna get a lakland.
