The Future of Interstellar Spacecraft
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 гру 2021
- In science fiction, spacecrafts explore every inch of our universe. Starships travel at warp speed across the Milky Way. Massive space stations drift through the cosmos, harboring ships and spaceplanes from strange planets, orbiting different suns. Science fiction paints a pretty picture of interstellar transportation, but will humans ever explore the universe beyond our solar system?

The beautiful music, the wonderful animatics, it gives me so much hope and awe. Just like Kurzegadt, except in their early years it was about making us be in awe while terrified at the same time.
Lmaoo it still is if you ask me
Frick kurgzersagt koranos has more details
yes i too like " Kurzegadt "
So, I'm not trying to hate but I really did not get the same level of enjoyment out of this as I do out of kurzgesagt so I've thought about why and @koranos hopefully I can offer constructive feedback:
-Video title
Almost all of the video is about OLD ideas about how to achieve interstellar travel, and about existing spacecraft. There's really not much hypothesizing about the future in this video.
- Project Daedalus
Daedalus was sort of a sister to project ORION, but this video kind of misses the point of both of those projects. Yes, they would go fast.. but the point is that they could go SO fast as to achieve relativistic speeds, which in layman's terms *slows down time* and means that humans could reach another solar system in a single human lifetime (even though a thousand years might go by on earth)
- Antimatter thrusters and warp drives
Umm no, you should just cut this part of the video out. Antimatter thrusters are not considered to be plausible by any reputable scientists. 'Warp drives' are interesting on paper in the same way that string theory is. There is no proof or even reason to believe that they are possible to make.
It is *very* likely that nuclear pulse detonation engines are the best thing we will be able to make for quite some time, and possible the best thing that is physically possible to make. The only other *remotely plausible* way to power a spacecraft would be if we were to create a fusion generator to use as an engine, and the science is still out on whether that is actually physically possible either.
Kurzegast definitely is the Steph Curry of science animation videos - changed the game.
This one is good tho. Glad the way had been paved for this.

The warp drive briefly mentioned at the end is the Alcubierre drive, which does NOT exceed the speed of light, but instead warps space so that it can travel vast distances in much less distance at much more manageable speeds.
@@Jonasv20
LETS GOOOOOOOOO!
A lot of time people people just abbreviate it to "faster than light" since it's easier then explaining it every time
@@nothingtoseehere8771 Yeah, it's just pedantry every time it's pointed out. It's not technically FTL, but in every practical sense it is.
I propose LSC - Light Speed Circumvention
@@nutbastard It gives the wrong idea to people who don't already know what the Alcubierre drive is though. It'd have been better to explain that it warps space to travel huge distances quickly rather than to say it travels faster than light speed. Especially since to anyone who doesn't know about it already, it seems like we're just throwing Einstein out the window and pretending physics doesn't exist.
But I agree, in a video specifically about the Alcubierre drive or warp drives in general, it would be better to lie down the concept and then from there refer to it as faster than light travel.
@@nothingtoseehere8771 I replied to... the wrong person?
See my reply to Nut Bastard lol
Sending any object to another star system, regardless of its size and function, would be a stunning achievement. One problem we have though is patience, these things, like colonizing new worlds, might be something achievable over long periods of time. The problem is we live in an existence where countries struggle to last individual people's lifetimes, and thus, we may not have stable enough institutions domestically as a species to support such major feats.
We have more than enough stable institutions. We just lack the will to confront these issues at the moment.
As for the colonization of new worlds. Ark Ships such as sleeper vessels and or generational ships will likely be our best bets for interstellar exploration with humans onboard.
Everything we need for such ships is currently on Earth and the solar system. Create the technology that we need neccessary for deepspace travel long term for either preserving individual humans and or insuring that a colony ship is able to be a temporary home for a generation or more for long term travel to a distant solar system.
All we need is the will. Education, encouragement, and the willingless to work with each other is the main issues to deal with.
@@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent "Everything we need for such ships is currently on Earth and the solar system. Create the technology that we need"
You know this is a contradiction right?
My point about the institutions is that we would have to have stable governments in place to routinely launch these trans-generational voyages. Them getting there and firing us a "we made it" note could be several lifetimes apart. Establishing something stable and turning it into something more than two disconnected planets may take time also.
There is also a flaw in transgenerational ships. There is a possibility they could end up being stranded in interstellar space. For example, if we launch a ship that takes 5 generations to make it to the destination, and then technology develops where it is only one lifetime, there is a good chance the transgenerational ship will get passed up and left behind by the one generation ship with no one able to do anything about it.
We will somehow need to move at light speeds by nuclear energy or come up with a cryogenic freezing system
@@wys.stefan Maybe, but to move mass at the speed of light you need an infinite amount of energy. Sub light speeds are most likely going to be the solution. A system to replicate the cryogenic freezing concept might be incredibly hard but time dilation might be a part of the solution as well, but in limited scope.
@@jnnfccc1794 you need an infinite amount of energy to move a finite amount of mass at a finite speed for finites amount of time? that's confusing
Hi Koranos! Whenever you use miles (miles per hour or as a distance) it would be nice to have the equivalent in kilometers. For exemple in a corner of the video. It would make it easier for the people that don't use miles to understand and also the metric system is the universal system is science!
Yes, indeed.
Thanks
Exactly, whenever I see anything in miles its obviously an american, who are basically the only ones who still uses this ridiculous system.
If science has chosen Metric System, why would a science channel be using something different? It's just nonesense.
I love the videos but you can't grasp what they are saying when using this old imperial system.

I was onboard until the "m-drive".... I like it better when you stick to science.
Amen to that!
amen
Just because you can't understand it doesn't mean it's not science...
Most things we now know were magic to scientists decades ago. Science is not only for the things we can see and touch, its also (and sometimes mainly) for theoretical porpuses.
Wasn't the emDrive proved to be a measurement error? Nontheless it certainly doesn't provide "huge amounts" of thrust.
Look at harold whites work
no the theoretical design produces huge thrust, the attempts at a prototype so far weren't significantly better than the window for a measurement error
Yeah. If it is questionable, build one big enough to produce clear results one way or the other.
I think the jury is still out, and further testing is warranted. It needs to be scaled up and tested outside of all the interference present on Earth. You are correct that it provides very little, if any, thrust. The important part is that if it works, it can provide constant thrust with a relatively low fuel mass. Ridiculously low compared to chemical rockets.
It's been more or less proven now that the only "thrust" being measured from an EmDrive comes from the magnetic fields of the PSU and the power cable.
This is a science-based channel, so consider using SI units instead of (or in addition to) the antiquated "miles" etc. You would do a service to your users - and to yourself too, by reaching out to an international audience.
"After studying Jupiter, Pioneer X passed the main asteroid belt": I don't think so - the main asteroid belt is closer to the Sun than Jupiter. Also, it is the first time I have seen Pioneer X's plaque drawing censored. This is one of the most iconic and widespread images in science communication: why?
There's unfortunately a lot of misinformation in this video. It's probably completely unintentional but they really should do more research on this stuff before making an entire video about it.
A delicate compromise so wider audience might understand. Works well for me. We definitely get the point of the video. That’s all they matters. You’ve got to sacrifice something.
FYI, not everyone outside the US used exclusively the metric system. The "international audience" is a mistaken belief the whole world must see through European eyes. And they call Americans arrogant.....
But in terms of those of us interested in space, yes we are used to using metric numbers in relation to space.
@@icecold9511 who uses miles other than the US?
@@LewisWallin Indeed. Carefully fact-checking a script must require a very minor effort compared to, you know, animating the whole thing. For the next video, they should spend less time censoring spacecraft naughty bits, and use it for factual verification.

I thought this was from Kurzgesagt for a minute, up until I was a few seconds into the video. But that's a HUGE compliment so don't take it the wrong way, Kurzgesagt is one of the best channels on UA-cam! So being similar to them means you are on the right track for sure! And plus, you sound a lot like their narrator, which is also a plus because he does a great job as well. I like your animation style too, I think it was mostly the thumbnail that reminded me of Kurzgesagt, their animation looks similar to the thumbnail. Keep up the good work bud‼️💯🙏 You're doing great
Yes… total copycat 😬🤷🏻♂️😅
It’s a total rip off of Kurzgesagt if you ask me:
Distinctive vibrant colour palette ✅
Big bold white text in thumbnail ✅
Rounded off animated shapes ✅
Science/space themed content ✅
Narrator with British accent ✅
The only thing that’s missing is birds.
To any naysayers, unless he literally took the same narrative from an episode of Kurzgesagt, I wouldn't call it a copycat or ripoff.
There's nothing wrong with using a similar visual style. Most visual styles have been used by many different creators. And Kurzgesagt literally has videos up telling you how to animate like them, so it's basically an invitation to join the community.
Koranos did a great job here and I wish I could pull this off.
@@praveen25 So any animated video made by a British person about science is ripping off kurzgesagt? Hate to break it to you dude, but pretty much all vids from space are animated due to the fact there aren't that many HD cameras in space

This is fast becoming my favourite channel. Well made vids, beautiful music and voice over...very educational.
The EM drive has been thoroughly debunked at this point.
Nasa never created prototypes either, an independent lab within Nasa created an experimental setup which reported anomalous thrust readings. The thrust was never "huge" it was absolutely microscopic, within the error margins of the experimental setup, and that is exactly what other labs determined was happening - the "thrust" was actually from the interaction of the earths magnetic field with small magnetic fields created in the wiring of the experimental setup.
Also the "Interstellar Probe" is just a concept, NASA isn't panning anything yet, it has no funding.
It is very telling that ALL the comments AROUND this one are kissing the channel owner's butt and all of them are hearted, but THIS one which is genuinely valuable and quite correct is not.
I love those videos, but could you use the metric system while explaining things? It would be so much more correct and understandable by everyone in the world.
They both have there uses but yes it would be good to have both systems in the video and have 1 in brackets
Nothing brightens my day like looking at how far space travel has come and how far we have yet to go!

@@User0000000000000004 IMO, a very bad reaction.
(I'm gonna sound salty)
You can't make that conclusion from a single mistake. I feel like the more creators push the content quality, the more people get "spoiled" by the extremes of high standarts and just think everything else is not worth your time. This is still an incredible channel, can't even imagine how much effort went into making and animating these videos...
If i had done anything close to this, I'd be perfectly eligible for shitting on it. But this type of quality content is a rarity here...
I'd recomment you reconsidering your opinion :)
@@User0000000000000004 It is very telling that ALL the comments AROUND this one are just kissing the channel owner's butt and all of them are hearted, but THIS one which is genuinely valuable and quite correct is not. Also, you should know Kurzgechortle (or should I say Kurzgesagt) is quite unscientific as well. I remember seeing them ponder the final fate of the universe, whether it would be the big crunch and bounce, big freeze or big rip or others, and they actually said at the end of the video that they would CHOOSE to believe in the big bounce because they found it the most "uplifting". That is a position which is antithetical to science itself, to believe against evidence, what you most wish to be true. So the lesson is, don't have any heroes, they will disappoint you. Sabine Hossenfelder and PBS Spacetime are the most accurate source of information as far as science channels on youtube go, I find. Followed by the science asylum. The rest all have their zealous fans but they are ignorant people. Especially ridddle. That one is the most ridiculous of them all.
The real question is if I and you and any others finding the video less than stellar are about to find our comments deleted and any future comments "hidden" on the channel. The way to test this is to leave a comment and then come back not signed in to see if it is still there. If you are shadowbanned it will try to trick you into thinking you have not been censored, so you need to test while not signed in.
Amazing video. Although similar to kurzgezagt your artstyle is more surreal and I love it. Keep it up!
You video quality is simply impressive! :) keep it up!
Great vid, man 🖖
The fastest man made object is currently traveling at around 0.0000364% the speed of light (393,044 km/h).
So, When you say that "No human-made spacecraft has ever accomplished to travel more than the speed of light"...What.
With current knowledge about physics, nothing can travel faster than light. To travel the speed of light you must have no mass, and nothing we know of, human made, is mass-less. Also, to travel the speed of light would require infinite amount of energy, and we can not do this.
So I am not sure who are the audience of this channel. I'd suggest getting more serious about the data you share because all and all this has good potential and presentation.
You are right, nothing can travel faster than light. The warp drive at the end of the video doesn't travel faster than light but warps space instead so it can travel much more distance at slower speeds.
@Michael Jay When he says it like that, it seems like it is actually accomplishable, or that something like that has been tried, but we are too much time before we can even get close to it. So yeah, it's right, but misleading.
So your issue is the way he said it? All the effort put into the video and your issue is he needs to get more serious about "how he presents his data"because you dislike his phraseology? That's nit picky, in bad faith, and just overall a rediculous problem to have with the video. The video is made for young adults who want to learn. Yes there is a huge gap between the fastest speed traveled and light speed. But your basically condescending because he said what you wanted but didn't say it HOW YOU think he should. Also condescending about their wording when you have trouble putting together a sentence in a readable manner is, well it's ironic to say the least
Also, looking at your channel and videos, more irony abounds. Because the difference between your videos and this one is like the difference between the fastest man has traveled and light speed
@@goodanytimej8688 Yes I may have been too harsh with the comment but all I say is that this things should be presented accurately.
Because of videos like that I, and many people I know who love this subject had a lot of misconceptions about space.
It struck me a few years ago to understand that all the milky way photos are just artist representations and not the real deal. Why? Because I saw misleading videos.
So if you have something constructive to say, do it. If you need to personally have a go at my bass playing abilities, fuck if I care :)
Your videos are amazing ! One of the best on youtube
The narrator is just amazing!
The bell hath rung once again, my friends.
i think StarChip might be our best proof of concept for now. 20% of speed of light to our closest solar system Alpha Centauri would take 20-30 years. It can then examine the exoplanet Proxima Centauri b, which is in the habitable zone.
StarChip is mostly a bullshit project. First of all, you need an insanely powerful laser. Gigawatts of power! An additional problem is that the efficiency of the laser would drop rapidly as StarChip moves away. Another problem is how StarChip itself would handle the insane amount of radiation. The laser would simply melt it. A collision with even a grain of sand would absolutely shred it.
