An article in the FT yesterday was talking about the fact that used EVs at 2-3 years old (coming from the leasing market) are now selling for the same and in some cases less than their petrol equivalents. In many cases you will get more car for the same amount as you would spend on a new 'budget' EV and I think this will make used cars a more attractive prospect and could dent the sale of new budget models.
The micro cars fall into a different category with some having limited speeds, these are more suited to people who would otherwise thing about cycling; they are unlikely to be bought by anyone outside of city/town drivers as you wouldn't really want to be doing longer distances on major roads in one, I don't think you can even drive something like the Citroen Ami on the motorway for example.

There is the Silence electric EV microcar available in the UK but it expensive at £16k.

New small EVs are competing against second hand EVs too. An Corsa e or Pug e208 can be picked up on low mileage 2-3 years old for £15k or less. That is what the new BYD & Dacia Spring will be competing against. As second cars they are a pretty compelling option for many. I like the idea of stripped down motoring, but as has always been the case, the smallest new cars compete against bigger 2 year old cars...

EV manufacturers should never have tried to emulate regular ICE vehicles as their inherent failures were always destined to be pointed out when comparisons were made (range, load etc). Had the incentive been built around a genuine city-runaround (limited mileage, simple home charging, etc) they could have cleaned up both the markets and city air quality. I don't know of an EV user that doesn't keep a regular ICE vehicle as backup but considering it would only be used for long distance/holiday work it would be left at home for 90% of its life.

Hardly any EV sales are private purchases without any company/corporate or tax incentives. People are not spending their own money on these overpriced appliances, that’s why the market is stalling. Company cars and fleets make up the sale statistics but many private buyers are returning to ICE and it is getting worse and worse. The people who want cheap motoring are already aware of the high taxes, insurance costs and the increasing expenses EVs are subject to, in addition to the surreal depreciation.

    • @davetakesiton

But actually not true, private sales and leases still make up biggest growth.

    • @ComeJesusChrist
      @ComeJesusChrist Місяць тому

@@davetakesiton This is from April, this year, from Sky News, and since then, sales have fallen further:
Some 15.2% of new cars registered in March were pure electrics, down from 16.2% during the same period last year, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.
The industry body said the "tough economic backdrop" of low growth, weak consumer confidence and high interest rates was making it harder for drivers to "invest in these new technologies".
Year-on-year sales of electric vehicles (EVs) did rise during the month, but this was mostly driven by fleet investment, rather than from private drivers, the SMMT said.
Total uptake of hybrid electric vehicles rose by nearly 20% to 44,550 in March compared to the year before, while the registration of new battery electric vehicles rose by almost 4% to 48,300.
The SMMT's chief executive Mike Hawes said: "A sluggish private market and shrinking EV market share show the challenge ahead.
"Manufacturers are providing compelling offers, but they can't single-handedly fund the transition indefinitely."
It comes after leading electric carmakers Tesla and Chinese firm BYD both reported a sharp drop in sales during the first quarter of the year, prompting concern from some commentators that appetite for the vehicles could be declining.
Overall, the SMMT's figures, published on Thursday, said the UK car market grew for the 20th consecutive month in March, with a 10.4% rise in registrations.
The total of more than 317,786 cars was the UK's best March performance since 2019, although it was still more than 30% below pre-pandemic levels.
Registrations by private buyers fell by 7.7% and dropped by 8% among small businesses.
However, fleet investment in cars leapt by almost 30%, with "compelling tax incentives" driving the uptake of electric vehicles, the SMMT said.
The industry body renewed calls for the government to do more to incentivise private buyers to go electric too - including by reducing VAT on public EV charging.
"Government support for private consumers - not just business and fleets - would send a positive message and deliver a faster, fairer transition on time and on target," said Mr Hawes.

Getting there. New range of cheap electric good for second car but not enough range really for the only car in the household. For us we have a single electric car with a WPT range of 303 miles (realistic 250 from 90% charge). Any less would be a struggle for long distances. Current small cars seem to max out currently at 200 WPT. In a few years we might finally get the small cheap car with 300+ miles. That’s the next game-changer.

Would you do that? We did that trip last week over two days, 7am start down to just below Bordeaux (1 hour traffic delay), stayed overnight and did the next leg on Saturday, another 8 hours. We stopped because we wanted a break, loo, drink, let stretch and that's when the car charges.

From experience, family of four, plug in upon arrival at services, loo stop, buy coffee and return direct to car and unplug. That was 16 minutes. I was curious to measure it because so many people are convinced that their pee stop is no more than 5 minutes.

Apart from that we didn’t stop until we were queuing to get onto the tunnel (no chargers there) and in the tunnel (no chargers there either). How many EVs today can comfortably do those 350 odd miles with max 5 minutes of recharging and without any risk of running out of battery, and cost as little as a second-hand golf.
Stop kidding yourself and other people that it’s not a compromise to drive an EV, and start realising that for people who don’t care about ice car pollution, they are a risk. There are hardly any EVs with that range even now, and those are unaffordable unless you are totally committed to the concept of EVs.
