It's funny that this gentelman, even with Sir Peter, the teacher, right next to him has a fear of cutting too much. It truly is hard as a beginner to cut out branches. This has been a great teaching tool for us. Thank you again Sir Peter for all your courage and lessons we've learned from you! And, beautifully said that little birds should b able to fly through!
That's why Peter always says women are not as bold, they just can't hack off as much as a man will do, they are nurturing by nature, and men are the wood choppers.

Helpful lesson. For my part I found the bag trick especially helpful for this use with the forest. Even if I can imagine shapes I do feel like bag helps with focus and avoiding being overwhelmed by the number of trees.
Ohh wow...what a difference in appearance a little trimming & 'savvy' makes! Now most of the tree branches are lying on the table. I'm always so scared to trim my bonsai for fear of ruining it. Pops really knows his bonsai's!
Thank you Peter for showing us how to better look at forest groupings. I have my eye on an aspen raft I plan to yamadori in the spring and your videos are a great reference for styling. Keep up the good work!
So funny, I thought at the beginning, the birds can't fly though that forest. Picea take a lot of taming, I love the bright green in the spring, and the wonderful smell. I probably have 20 and my favorite forest priced really high at the local nursery where I sell my JBP and JRP, priced high because I want it on display, not taken away after 5 years. Thanks for a very informative video Peter, I have some forests to build.
I am definitely guilty of that I took a bit too much of a couple of pine trees I had, but I have put them back in the ground to grow for a few years and try again
remarkable video, the subject "forest" has enormous potential. A lot of humility and pedagogy revealed the wonder that was hidden in the origin, fantastic teamwork! Mutual satisfaction. Maybe it's good to draw the current project on a sheet to learn to see its future... in 1 or 2 years without pruning it will return to its original shape. A work of communication/observations remains to be done between the man and the tree. Reading books on shapes is a good source of inspiration. A final question: have you chewed the cut wounds for better healing ? 🍀Take care💚 THX, 💕✨
I would add, cut back only 1 to 2 year old branches and if you want to be precise, cut to already formed bud somewhere on that branch. Older branches are not likely or very sporadically to bud back on spruces and like it was said, you need to left some green on a branch when you cut. It can help to budback when you remove 3 years old and older needles on branches which already lost their purpouse.
@@peterchan3100 Hi Peter many thanks for the awsome tree education you've taught me. A lifetime of knowledge of one of my favorite hobbies. Your friend Karl. Take good care Peter.
Thank you....🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan, so much wisdom, so much knowledge,,,, I hope I can honor you by absorbing, a small amount, and passing it on. Especially your teaching style and patience. That was a wonderful demonstration of all of your teachings and on a group of trees, a forest. I, for one, can say I always learn a tremendous amount from your videos, all that I viewed thus far. I must add,,, it was very "interesting" to watch Godfrey's transitioning from customer to a student having a personal lesson from, the one I call the master. His chin and jaw. Sorry I just had to add that. One question, why were your Bonsai scissors(the ones with the red tape or paint) so "loud", not the secateurs? Your cuts sounded,,,, so exact,,,, so final,,,, so sure,,,, really. That is the best way I can state my question. I could not determine if you had a personal microphone and Godfrey did not or what,,,, so I ask. Thank you again. 🙏 🖖 🙏 😔 🙏
Peter I was checking my garden Japanese maple that is no more than 8 feet tall but it’s planted 15 years ago. It has some leaves curly and dried and other parts green leaves. It doesn’t look healthy and I was checking for pest and I found big brown ugly grasshopper . What can I do to get rid of this things.? I am in Northern California.
The grasshopper may not be the cause of the problem. More likely it may have had an infestation of other pests - ? I am not familiar with the pests and diseases you get in N California. Cut out the dead branches next Spring and it should recover. Good luck.
Tiny birds?!? I thought mosquitoes... then flies .. then karate kid. Imagine if Daniel would of just learned bonsai😆 Do weeping cherry trees bonsai well?!?
I sometimes wonder why someone would buy a Bonsai and then either neglect it or let it overgrow and then not have the courage to do something about it and I am sure the work Peter had done would not have been cheap, a Master is worthy of his time and expense.
hello mr Chan, sorry but i think the first forest was much better before the cutting, the look like the trees more stronger then after cutting. Sincerly.
It comes out great in the end. Start as a bush end up a group of trees.

@@steveanacorteswa3979 very true. But I got BOLD like Mr. Chan said and my Fukein Tea looks great!
@@Teresa-ih4sn Bold and Brave!
Thats why I only work with junipers. If I see a branch that needs to go I just deadwood it

And all the branches in the background can indeed clutter up the view. Very helpful.
The trick to using a white background is a great idea for working with a dense group of trees like in this case.
Thank you Mr Chan! Somehow it’s even more helpful to see the overwhelmed mortal under your tutelage.
This is absolutely marvelous. I’m not gonna lie, you are BOLD and it works so well
What a pleasure it was to watch this transformation. Little birds definitely can fly through the trees. 🌲
Great Mister Chan , best teacher ever!
This was a great teaching video, always with Peter but even better watching someone learn right there. Very great forecast reveal
That bag trick of isolating the individual trees is a very neat trick. I will definitely use that when I’m going to prune my forest plantings!
Very good lesson. Very informative.
You are a magician, Mr. Chan !
Beautiful work, great video, very informative and I loved the commentary from both of you. More like this please! ~Smile oN
Master of the masters.
Very nice forests😍
Wow excellent work and I love the idea of using the paper towel it really does help identify the area that you're working on great video thank you 💗
Looks beautiful, very brave 😊🇬🇧❤️

Look like raft very beautiful
Clearly he need more experience to do cutting. Lucky him, Mr. chan is around to help. Good video. Thank you
He will be back in 9 years 😉
Nice trees Peter. I was wondering if a piece of root from a pear tree will sprout into a tree trunk leader? Karl
I have never tried taking a root cutting from a pear tree but as it is from the Rose family ,it might do.

I dont usually mark my own tools but that one happens to have a red tape round it. The sound is probably due to the way I cut - with boldness !!

Yes they do as bigger size bonsai
I do not think the forest style suits the pot, would maybe look better in an oval pot as Peter suggested.
Didn't you listen to what I said to Gofrey about the pot?

Its all about the learning experience. But while it is growing, he enjoys it. So what is wrong with that?
