- I wanted to buy a watch to match a certain strap and I ended up buying this high end diver from Seiko.
After careful consideration and a month on the wrist, this watch turns out to be a beautifully designed and manufactured timepiece, with a few secrets under its sleeve.

This watch is a timeless masterpiece. It's an understated yet incredibly beautiful timepiece, it's so wearable and and simply the pinnacle of Japanese watchmaking.

@@leomarsic9814 yeah unfortunately Seiko has made this limited to 1700 pieces worldwide. If it were a normal run the price would have reflected that accordingly. I think everyones gripe here..

I completely agree with you - there's nothing in the GS range as genuinely attractive as this. It truly is spectacular in every way and we'll worth the money. What could be better than such an understated high end (for normal people) piece? Endlessly cooler than another "look at me" sub. Congrats, I can see myself doing exactly the same if I wanted to spend that on a watch.
Handled one in person and was so impressed with the everbrilliant of the 904 mix steel, the finishing and overall package. I never thought twice about it hearing about it originally. I want one!
This watch is a freaking killer. I'm vying for the sla055 hopefully soon. Seiko is killing it, those in the know, know. Avg Joe doesn't know.
The SLA series of Seiko divers absolutely amazing. They crap all over most sub 10k watches from technical and craftsmanship perspective. The 8L35 movement is fantastic! The main differences between this particular watch and a GS is the dial and movement finishing. Otherwise, its built to GS standards by GS watchmakers!

In my watch journey whitch started about 8-10 years ago,seiko was my first watch ,a birthday present, late 70's SQ ,still have ,still works well,i built up a collection of about ten or so seiko divers over the years then moved on to swiss ,2k hamilton the most expensive but i keep going back to seiko , my most recent a 62 mas re interpretation (6r35) will keep up with any swiss diver all day long ,70 hour power reserve for under 1k ...you can't beat a seiko

You wear a Seiko to check the correct time. You wear a Rolex to flaunt to your friends of your successful career or business.

Collecting vintage seiko watches is a amazing journey. Was fortunate to pickup a 1968 seiko LM or Lord Matic 25 jewel. This machine is very cool. Does not have the problem with the quick set. Always set it at 6:30 pm.
What a great testament to the quality of Seiko's movement manufacturing in that they don't have to regulate it because they JUST KNOW that it's already perfect!!

These 62MAS Re-Issue SLAs are lovely. I have one myself, the months earlier hi-beat one, SLA037. Sadly, the crown tube thread never worked particularly well from Day 1, and finally, the thread just gave itself in on one morning (meaning it no longer screwed or locked the crown down). Had to send the watch in to the Seiko Boutique Sydney for a warranty job, where I purchased the watch at. From what I've gathered, most of Seiko's diver watches, including these high-end SLA, don't have a crown tube that screws into the mid-case like their Swiss/German counterparts usually do. Instead, they are either machined directly out from the same metal block with the case (a very bad idea as threads would have wear & tear over time, and being an integrated part of the case practically means impossibility to replace with new parts); or friction-fitted press-in with some hyper strong epoxy compound to glue. Both configurations are extremely difficult to repair when it comes to a worn or crossed crown/tube thread. Seiko Service Center Australia still has my watch, and it's been close to 6 months now. I would assume they probably have shipped the watch to their Japan HQ, as it's pretty much not possible to fix it here in AU. Still eagerly waiting for the watch to come back. And I sincerely hope Seiko/Grand Seiko would one day up their game by upgrading all their crown tube into properly screwed down ones.

@kieran finney, except that the screwdown crown threads are a component that wear over time, and while a cheap watch that has planned obsolescence is fine, the SLA in question is not a cheap watch and should be designed with serviceability in mind.
I just bought the SLA057 with the new construction case with a separate tube for the stem/crown and it's just perfect now ! 😉🥂

@kieran finney To me these are just utter excuses. And I'm not sure which planet's Japanese watches you are referring to, because I'm positive as hell that these SLA, albeit being even more expensive than some GS divers, have unadjusted 8L movements that run a rather wide variation of timekeeping performance. My SLA gains around 10 seconds per day, which is more or less in the same league with Longines, and pretty subpar compared to higher end Swiss counterparts such as Rolex & Blancpain. This is not just one case, it's all over the internet with many many reviews mentioning that Seiko SLA are just not very accurate timekeepers. So I don't know where your theory of these Japanese watches being so accurate without needs to unscrew its crown is coming from. Even if it's a watch that runs perfectly in terms of timekeeping, you still need to set the date every now and then because it's not a perpetual calendar. So no, I don't think this is a non-issue. In fact, I think this is a big issue that Seiko also admits to have had because apparently they have rectified it in the SLA057 now. Let's give the Japanese watchmaking philosophy a break, come on.
@@kevinmosto yes you are right, the fact that the mouvements are not adjusted it's a shame ! but the 8L is a great mouvement and very accurate when is adjusted!
I said many times to my SEIKO Official dealer in Paris to sell 4K seiko adjusted like others brand ! .....in any case I love this SLA watches and It's not for a few seconds that I lose that I'll change my mind . My sbdx041 as been adjusted for free by Seiko when I had asked and insisted.

Total respect to anyone that can shell out this type of money on a Seiko. I myself bought a GS white birch, but this is a whole nother level of judging the watch on its own merits and not the name on the dial.

That's what I like about this watch, it flies under the radar, and only a very few and yourself know what you wear. No bling just a very nice and reliable watch

seiko is really killing it right now. They have desirable pieces at pretty much every price point that are great value. I picked up a king sumarai white dial last year and it also is taking up a LOT of time on my wrist and it was only 480 USD. It's not super accurate, but the presence, finish are very good and it's one the most stunning case backs on the market.
I tried it in a Seiko retailer, amazing piece and wears great. Was not ready to spend that much so I got a 300 MM reduced instead.
I’m not a diver style guy, but I just wired the money to Japan for an SBGE205, and I can’t wait for it to arrive!
One of the rules for my collection is no-Swiss, so the GS I ordered is my grail…I’m so hyped, I can’t even!

I call this type of watch a "sleeper".
It packs a punch w/o being over the top. You have to know watches to really "see" this one.

In the end, if you're happy with it that's all it matters. I love the uncluttered appearance of the watch.
I agree the top Seiko watches are probably better finished than most of the Top Swiss Watches with exception of Patek Phillipe,AP, probably and then Grand Seiko has the amazing Spring drive watches, so game over quality wise, they just don't have the hype and glamour that Rolex perceivably has

I’m in the same boat. This watch trumps my 2 Black Bays in terms of wrist time and enjoyment. I ended up getting the grey dial version as well. Couldn’t be happier.
"For those who know" is truly all one need say about Seiko watches.
As owner of both the SLA017 and the MM300 SBDX017, both with the 8L35 movement I can vouch for the positional variance, the accuracy hardly deviates in any position you put it.
The accuracy is astounding.
My watch journey began, like many, with Casio G Shocks. I then “moved up” to Seiko, etc. Finally reached Tudor and Rolex, only to abandon ship and go all the way back to Casio and Seiko. I had to learn for myself to only collect what I truly love. And, what can I say, I love love love Seiko.

Definitely a stunner. Instead of going high end Seiko or older GS , I'll be buying a Credor soon. A very underrated and undervalued brand ATM.

A watch is supposed to be worn ! Not to sleep in a safe in order to get sold at a higher price ! Because if your watch is missing a link when it was adjusted to you, if you scratch it and had it polished a few times, if you lost box or papers etc, then the price go down drastically !

Great video and beautiful watch. The 62 MAS is my favourite ever dive watch design. To me this is aesthetically more pleasing and superior in finishing to the Rolex sub. Not to mention a lot cheaper.

This is such a great video, and I'll admit that it helped open my eyes to today's Seiko as a brand. I have about 10 watches - Rolex, Tudor, JLC, IWC, Omega. My last experience with Seiko was 50 years ago - it was actually my first "real" wristwatch. Fast forward to now and within the context of this video - I just purchased a new Seiko SLA043J, today actually. I'm more enthused than ever about my watches, and certainly what this new addition to my collection will be. Thank you Peter for providing this wonderful look at this watch and Seiko as a brand.

I didn’t know about this watch until this video and the strap you have for it is perfect! Now I want one and they are probably all gone.
I will say that it looks beautiful and on the blue strap it looks equally beautiful without pretentiousness. But that’s a lot of cash. I can be equally in love with my blue RLG Odyssea for $600. Though it does not have that time accuracy.
I'm beyond content with the SPB147... I cannot imagine having this on my wrist. I'd be ecstatic.

Razor sharp edges is always something I'm trying to stay away from when looking for a watch. Smooth polished and well rounded angles are what a great watch should be all about.

At 8 inches you'll need a Seiko SLA023 or better still (if you can find one) the SLA025 ;)

If priced at Tudor / Omega prices, maybe. 7k not even a GS, not for me, but it is a sharp looking watch to be sure.
It is basically the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV, actually built by Ferrari for Alfa's reissue of a great car from the past. The same as Enzo Ferrari started in Alfa back in the thirties Grand Seiko was borne from Seiko. 🙂

Watch looks fantastic. I recently purchased a blue dial Seiko (SPB053J) and paired it with an Artem NATO in blue, red and grey and it looks fantastic! Perhaps the lovely blue strap you fitted is next on my list...

That is not just a Seiko...that is history. The 62MAS is history...amazing Japanese watchmaking history. Enjoy it! I have a Seiko 6159-7010 grandfather Tuna...it's a crazy looking watch that I absolutely love. Put it up to your ear and you'll hear that amazing 36kbph movement. You beat your ass this made Rolex sweat when they headed about it.
I paid $7500 for a white face Daytona. but today I wear seiko skx013 and the seiko sbbn031. both run better than my Daytona which I sold. great watch the seiko. SBBN031 is a new 2019 tuna had older one for many yrs. had buy another.

My 30 year old Seiko Kinetic which cost me nothing as I claimed it on tax as a seaman and my company picked up the rest. It had been languishing in a draw for the last ten years since I retired, I took it to a watch repairers Adelaide who for under A$300 put a new battery(capacitor) serviced the movement, fitted a new crystal and sympathetically gave the case and band a gentle cleaning/polish. Since getting it back it has kept (like yours) smack on time.My main watch an IWC Mk XV was serviced before Christmas and only gains about 2sec/month which I thought pretty good, but the workhorse Seiko beats it hands down, so it goes to show that Seiko can make very accurate timepieces for the common man as well as its superb watches at the higher price ranges, as you found out. Very nice and I do like that blue seconds hand.

I bought a SBDX041 who is the Beams JDM version contemporary to your 043 because I was looking for a all black Diver, a fantastic watch ! And a step forward compare to my SLA017(sold) ... and now I have bought the SLA057 and it's again a new step ahead for Seiko in the frontier of Grand Seiko world.
You have to have a closer look on it ,it's a fabulous watch a bit bigger but also thinner than your 043 and gilt . Is for sure more in the 6215-7000 side than 62mas and better than the SLA025 I have but man what a watch .as you I could bought others Swiss diver's but I choose the SEIKO charms & DNA.

Man it reminds me of the blue version of the Glashütte SeaQ, which is my favorite dive watch. I wonder how the movements compare.
That's when someone understood what Seiko really is: It's not a brand to show off. It is the certainty that you are getting the best value for your money.
If you talk about value, I'm assuming you mean RRP ? It's limited to 1700, so noone is getting it now at RRP. If you are interested in RRP, Rolex has much better movements for cheaper......than a Seiko! This is terrible value for money, and it's a Seiko so you can't even say you're paying for the image and brand - people will assume you paid £150 for this and whatever they say to your face, will think you're mad if you tell them you paid anything over £1k.
I can see why you love this watch, it's absolutely out of the top drawer!
I have the save the ocean 62 Mas clone. It doesn't have the special steel and is bigger by a mm or 2, but it does have diashield. It is so beautiful with the blue wave dial!
It is a lower cost and movement, but it is very well done as well for about 800 I think. I like arrow hands on my Seikos and this has a red arrow hand as well as 2 tone lume! Your wat h is very beautiful and with the 8l movement makes it superior to mine. I do have the 40th Gundam tuna. It also has the 8l movement and is a finer winding and hand movement than any watch I own!

This is a beautiful watch Peter , and thanks for sharing it. I own a few seiko dive watches , including a sumo and marinemaster . Yes Peter , you are right about the movement. It’s a grand seiko 8L35 . The marinemaster 300 has the same movement, but undecorated and not regulated. And a sealed body. But your watch looks more refined and classy . I have a co axial omega, but feel more comfortable wearing my seiko watches . Great video.

Free strap means you HAVE to buy a watch, too right. Ive liked all the 62mas reissues. This is a lovely look, glad the movement is good. I wonder what Seikos marketing plan is sometimes as they seem to be stretching from bottom to top end, and overlapping grand Seiko too, just seems odd - not to take away from a stunning piece

Yeah Seiko is starting to overlap with GS, which causes some concern for GS owners. Maybe in the near future the unique movements from GS will no longer be unique
to them.
From what I understand Seikos overlapping with GS comes from the goal to make Seiko everything from bottom to top as you said and then push GS way higher in the luxury sector, which resolves the overlapping. Of course GS is a luxury brand already but I mean smth around starting at 10K.. maybe im totally off with this though, japanes business strategies have me confused since forever
The Japanese market is big enough and loyal enough to Japanese brands that they sort of do what makes sense for themselves. Its the non JDM market that needs brand segmentation in order to parse quality. And remember that for most of grand seikos existence it was a dress line within seiko and doesn’t have the same heritage when it comes to divers. There was no Grand Seiko (dial) version of the 62M.
Congrats Pete, truly a gorgeous watch. I see why it's getting all your wrist time vs. your other watches. Excellent match with the strap from Artem. I think that strap would substantially elevate my Hitori Coral Blue diver....if only I could afford it :). BTW, awesome macro shots.
I wonder how much Seiko would appreciate the thanks to Grand Seiko at the end. This watch is a SEIKO. Just Seiko. And there's nothing bad about that.
Yeah you made a good choice. Whilst I've never seen one I'm prepared to be that build quality is on par with Rolex, and you can actually buy one. I've been saving for 10 years to buy a watch to celebrate my retirement next year. It was supposed to be a Rolex sub but it seems I'm not good enough to have one so Rolex can get stuffed. I'm now looking for an alternative and Seiko are high on my list.
