Oh my God, this content is S-U-R-R-E-A-L!! I am totally shocked by the quality of this! I am an avid consumer of cinematography content, and have never seen this level of tutorial before, with a cinematographer with this level of knowledge! Stunned! ps: the tape ball to lift the mirror and remove the reflexion was one of the most ridiculously obvious and mindblowing tip I have ever seen in cinematography. I had to pause the video to think "Geeh! Why haven't anyone ever taught this before?!!"
6:15 genius. The more I research lighting and filmmaking the more I learn it’s not all about fancy equipment but a lot of the time it’s the most practical, use your initiative type stuff that gets the job done. Fascinating and motivating to see 👏
This was a very solid tutorial Shane. The tape ball, probably like everyone else, blew my mind. So simple, but makes sense. Years of practical onset experience plus really paying attention. I love it. Keep em' coming!
I learned that tape ball trick several years ago when I was AC on the reality show Blind Date. We would be shooting in Restuarants all the time and there would inevitably be a mirror somewhere messing with the shot. I also learned that when you have two people sitting at restaurant dining table and not all the feet of the legs aren't touching the floor so you get that table wobble. Taking a C47 and taking it apart and using it as a wedge to keep it from wobbling. Simple fix when you don't have a grip department and you're basically run and gunning it.
I learned and improved x5 folds my results just by watching this video. At first, I was not convinced if that it will be "another one" but it is not. Highly encourage you to watch it!
Holy shit this is the real deal! I just learned some very important lighting. He made a wonderful presentation. I now have a basic grasp of what the numbers indicate on the false color chart. (I Didn't quite know anything about). The way He explained the dynamic of lighting this scene was truly incredible and easy to understand- even for a simpleton like me who only gets it when you dumb it down to grade school. The mirror play was genius. My rookiness would have made more work out of solving that problem by either adjusting the Westcott or moving the mirror entirely. Ok that's enough. Going to watch pt2.
Thank you Shane. I haven't used that Wescott fixture and I didn't realize it had 3 circuits or that the tungsten color temp looked so good dimmed down. I didn't see any magenta. I appreciate these videos so much. 🤗🙏🏾
Instant sub and I'm desperate for part 2. This was just excellent, so clear and informative. Lovely way to guide those interested in the ways of film lighting. Many many thanks!
This is amazing! I would love to transition from IT into this business. Thank you so much for sharing how lighting is done on set. Can’t wait to create something so that I can try with the gear I have.
Love these videos. Just watching everyone work through every little issue you might run across is so educational for me. The tape ball blew my damn mind 😆. Such a simple and genius solution. THIS is the kind of stuff you can only learn from someone who’s experienced. Thanks so much team.
Great video BUT not completely helpful for indie filmmakers who don’t have access to a sound stage. I love your thought process and showing us how you build around the practical (very helpful), but would love to see how to shoot interior night on location, ie and actual house. Also, would love a professional to give some advice on how to do this if your budget is low and you had to shoot interior night during the day?? Thanks.
Hi, thanks for posting this, an incredible video. Wanted to ask, what does tape ball mean here? Are you lifting/readjusting the mirror, or covering it in black tape?
where have u been! hahaha great thanks man! felt you so bad. This is what i really like, a moody scene just in the edge of black shadows with a sparkle of detail. :( too bad i dont have a great camera so my blacks are full of noise even with a fixed 1.8 50mm
anyone who dislikes these videos are probably UA-camrs who film their coffee and own the newest cameras only to make shat montage videos xDDD the man literally works in the business and showing us tricks of the trade and you dislike the video?! Cmon 🤡
they just put it on the corner of the mirror to move the bottom of the mirror from the wall (to create and angle) so basically mirror is not in 90 degree angle like this ( I ) but instead it is like this now ( / ) thats all, and the reflection is gone
@@Snstdrive Aha! So, the ball of tape is just to angle the mirror! Makes perfect sense! I thought it was something being applied to a lighting fixture.
Learning and teaching should actully be always free. Someone just thought it be goud idea to put a price tag on it and since then it,s become the norm.
What is so sad is that so many gaffers on tv shows do not know how to do this and the scene is too dark and you cannot tell what the character is doing

What is a tape ball though? I didn't quite get it what they did there.
we used corks in tv. I do it all the time! Tape ball is some scrunched up tape that sticks nicely

Loved this. The tape ball trick is actually genius. Cheers!
I agree! It’s stuff like that that makes my goblin brain light up.
Wow! and triple wow....
The "Tape ball" is seriously the unsung hero of this video!
What does that mean? What did they actually do on set?
I also didn't get it?
@@GO2CUT its a piece of tape balled up and put underneath the mirror to angle it so it doesn't reflect the light.

It's like Film School's on UA-cam
I used every piece of knowledge from this short video on my last DP job. Perfect!
Now pay for the course to say thank you 😊

Can someone explain about the tape ball...
Would someone explain how the “tape ball” works? I see the reflection is removed but I would like to know where this tape ball is placed.

why go through this stress for a single shot lasting less than 20s? To me, its a sign of great attention to details.
