    Here's how we did our recreation of one of my favourite visual / practical effects from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade - the "Path of God" scene where Indy must take a leap of faith into a high ravine, where an "invisible" bridge is camouflaged through the use of forced perspective.
    Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) created this amazing effect by filming Harrison Ford against a blue screen, and compositing him into a shot of a model bridge and matte painting backgrounds (cheaper than building a full-size set). A puppet of Ford was used to create a shadow on the model.
    We attempted to recreate this effect in our studio using a green screen (our green screen is bigger than out blue screen for full-length shots) and a slider to do the sideways camera movement for the character. We couldn't do as long a move as in the film, which was most likely done using a track and dolly, and when building the model we had to scale down the move even further. I am by no means a master matte painter like they had at ILM, so the result isn't photorealistic but hopefully demonstrates the technique!
    We didn't have any kind of motion control like ILM probably did, and so instead we filmed the full-scale element first, filmed the model at half speed (guessing the distance though trial and error) and then used time-remapping to match the timing to the first shot. Then we used motion tracking to do most of the matching to "stick" the figure into the right place to the bridge, with some manual adjustments of position keyframes to finish.

    I was at ILM when they were wrapping this set-up, and it was pretty cool to see this effect in person. A true magicians trick! I was also impressed with the 35mm still camera shooting the mine car sequence. Old school Innovation!

    Of all the illusions in that movie, this was the most awesome. It literally blew my mind. This goes to show that the movies of the 70s and 80s were the best. BTW, you did an incredible job using off the shelf parts and cameras. Well done.

    @1:06 they used a motion control rig, that can scale the motion, so that the motion of the shot of Harrison Ford matches the motion of the miniature bridge.

    This is seriously impressive! You achieved an effect done in 1989 with just your computer and a few equipment at home. I wanna say, where getting to the point where someone at home with a YT channel can pull off better effects than a major studio with a 200 million dollar budget!

  • @David0Perez0

      89, but yeah. The whole photochemical process for combining actual physical film must've been exhausting on its own! Truly genius people at the top of their game - again and again 👏

    • @Dargonhuman

      Seriously! Even with modern technology, that single shot was very pain staking and time consuming, I can't imagine having to do that on film and without modern computer programs.

      *1989
      The tedious part is the motion control photography and part with the optical printer(luckily they were slowly phased out at the time when I started doing VFX).

    • @justmythought7658
      @justmythought7658 3 роки тому +1

      I thought it was stupid, because it only works in movies with a controlled camera. Indiana Jones should have been able to see the bridge easily.

    • @steepfrugut
      @steepfrugut 3 роки тому +1

      @JustMy Thought Yeah, I see your point. I just always assumed that the illusion was "intended" to be seen at Indy's eye level, and once he took a few steps "on faith" that the bridge would be visible. The idea being that it was not visible _until after_ he took the first steps. The fact that the perspective has to be different for the camera is just so that we as viewers can also be tricked by the illusion, if that makes sense. At least that's how I always understood it.

    Works in the cinema but they proved that it wouldn’t have fooled Indy (wasn’t myth busters, but some similar show). Having two eyes on it your brain can work out the perspective difference. Obviously it works in film as you’re viewing a ‘flat image’. Not taking anything away from the scene (or then while film for that matter), it’s awesome

      This shot goes by pretty fast in the movie, and it’s an effect most people have no personal experience with. (And it doesn’t really quite work in person if you have two eyes or move your head at all.) So I think many, many viewers didn’t understand what was happening. Too bad, because it’s a clever idea and well executed.

    If you have a dslr turn the lights of in the room, and get a high powered torch and put in in the viewfinder, it will project the light onto the area, you can with chalk mark off your limit, then go to the finish position and do the same, at the finish point you can put in a camera slide transparency in the view finder make sure its gridded then you mark off the grid in chalk on the model and use this to line up the painted areas. I am a matte painter. ;)
