It's like doctors studying to be doctors for many years and attaining the title of doctor after working hard for it don't get refered to as doctor this or that. When teachers study to be teachers I guess it's a respect thing,to call them their last name instead of first name if you won't say professor etc. I know it's a joke but looks bad from the outside also if a teacher's too close to one or some student(s) it might not look right to other adults .
I think University is more like an adult's environment, so that is why most people (students and teachers) call each other by their first name. Meanwhile, High School is more like a children's environment, so students are being expected to call teachers by their last name as a way to show respect as a child to an adult.

I had this really cool teacher who told us especifically not to call him professor, teacher or Mr.whatever because that was a way of depersonalizing him and establishing a sort of distance and hierarchy between him and us, giving him a place of authority and superiority over us. He said he believed he was no better than us and we were no better than him, we're all learning and he'd respect us as long as we repected him. We always called him by his first name. I have more respect for that guy than for anyone I was required to call Mr/Mrs.
