    I hate it when people hate on my favourite book ( Harry Potter ) when they haven't ever read it. I can understand after you have read a book and you decide that you really didn't enjoy it but knowing nothing about and hating on it is just wrong

      Same! I feel like that sort of negativity is often towards authors like Cassandra Clare and Sarah J. Maas. Just because you've read ONE book (or none) and didn't like it doesn't mean that the series is trash.

    • @khonzahanny

      @@emma.328 I do that a lot with authors.. if I read one book from them and I didn't like it chances are I'm not going to read anything from that author again. And when people asked me I said I dont like the writing style (or anything that turns me off with his/her work)
      But people do the same with authors they like. Read another work of them

      So when we talk it is like:
      He: shut up or I'll hit you with this pen!
      Me: There's a pen in Percy Jackson!
      He: Shut up about Percy Jackson I'm not going to read it!
      Me: Why not, it's amazing!

    I remember how angry I got when a friend of mine said Fast and Furious 7 was really terrible, all because she said it like it was a fact instead of an opinion. That's what I react on. When they hate on my favorite books and movies as if it's a fact that they're awful instead of it just being their respectful opinion.

    The thing about books is that as a reader you pick what appeals to your personal tastes. So if someone don't love a book I do, they simply don't have the same taste and that is okay, there is plenty books to go around and everyone can find one they love.
    Like I personally don't like books with a heavy romance plot, but I don't mind that some do, (that said, working at a secondhand store with a book section I've noticed certain demographics lean towards certain genres)

    I think another reaction to why people get offended is when readers point out the flaws or notice problem areas in the book. Then, since they did not notice it at first they question why they originally enjoyed the book in the first place and unfairly take it out on the one who noticed it.

    Right, let's say pizza is your favourite food. You wouldn't get offended and give someone hate if you found out they didn't like pizza. You would look silly if you were like 'I hate her, she doesn't like pizza. The fact that she doesn't like pizza offends me completely.' I just don't get why books are different. Perhaps it's a bit of immaturity. Nor would someone not liking pizza ruin pizza for you. Someone pointing out the flaws of pizza wouldn't change the fact it is your favourite. It would still be your favourite food despite knowing that there are people out there who can't stand pizza. Someone not liking pizza isn't offensive. Just like someone not liking a book isn't offensive.

      @Katria People can have an attachment to food the same way people can be attached to books. People like some foods because of the memories attached. Comfort food. Food their parents made when ill. Food you were eating when you found out bad news. People can lean on food just as much as people can lean on books. I know many people turn to food as a comfort. Some people see food as their friend.
      But I can see your point. You can love a book, knowing it's got a few problems. Most things are problematic so nothing is ever going to perfect. There will always be something for someone to hate about every single book. You can love a ship that has problems but also know that that behaviour is wrong and you wouldn't stand for it. Characters can be problematic but you can still love them knowing that. People underestimate others sometime and think they are stupid. Barney from HIMYM is character that in real life would be an utter horrible person, yet people love him all the same. You can love Snape and still think his behaviour in the books is disgusting. You're never going to find a perfect character because us real life humans aren't perfect, so why would characters in books be perfect. Sometimes we humans are problematic. It's all about character growth, we'd all be classed as problematic if we were judged on the mistakes or problematic thoughts in our youth. I hate this cancelled culture because at one point, every single person would be cancelled.
      And I wish that too.
      Haha. My favourite pizza is pineapple, mushroom and sweetcorn. So I have had a lot of people think I'm strange for that xD

  • @jackietea8772

    Thanks for discussing the problematic "problematic" problem. lol. That's one of my biggest issues with booktube is that EVERYTHING is "problematic"....when real life is problematic. Thats honestly what makes stories interesting a lot of the time. People expect every relationship to be "perfect and healthy" when thats just not how life is sometimes. Also...it makes you feel guilty for loving a book that has "problematic" aspects. The "Shatter Me" series is a perfect example. I am so here for problematic Warner... fight me. I also love ACOMAF and when people try to throw out the "problematic" card on that one I get pissed. People literally try to find the problematic aspects in every book so they are able to identify as a "critical reader". It's just annoying to me. lol sorry about the rant. I had to get it off my chest. With that whole thing being said, I do think everyone is entitled to their own opinion and shouldn't make people feel like poop if they like something problematic. haha

    • @josephinerossi5584
      @josephinerossi5584 5 років тому +3

      The problem, to me at least, isn't that there's problematic elements in a story, the problem is this elements aren't adressed as problematic and are maybe even considered as romantic. Im soooo here for books talking about unhealthy relationships (romantic or in a family) but i don't want the book to tell me they are okay.

    • @jeweld.282
      @jeweld.282 5 років тому +4

      I respectfully disagree. I don't think that an author is bound to address something as problematic. Books aren't meant to teach morals. They are meant to entertain. If you haven't developed morals by the time you read a book, it's too late lol. Plus, problematic to you in a book may not be problematic to the author. You have to agree to disagree, cause it's just writing, and nobody is hurting anybody. :)

      don't get me wrong i definitely feel like there are stories where there are problematic aspects, like you are stating. But i think that sometimes that term is over used. I read a book recently about someone with a mental illness... and the husband was for the most part a good guy, but the girl was way too dependent on him, to an unhealthy degree. So many reviews were stating how "problematic" it was and removed stars... but in that particular story it worked because with mental illness things are often times a little messed up or NOT completely healthy.... relationships aren't going to be flawless and its okay to write it and show it and not feel like you have to equalize it in the end. Sometimes i feel like the term problematic dumbs down plots. Readers aren't stupid and thats what keeps people thinking and analyzing... it's okay if there are problematic aspects that aren't always equalized or stated straight out as WRONG. I think we need to give readers more credit and let people think about these things. We don't always need to be fed morals.. ESPECIALLY as adults, or even young adults. We should be exposed and able to come up with our own conclusions... it teaches critical thinking skills.

    I will never fully understand why people get so mad at others over not liking their favorite book. Everyone is different and no two people are alike. Yes, it's great when you find someone who loves the same book as you, but I also like to hear people's dislikes as well. It opens my eyes up to how other people think and their opinions. Even if they hate a favorite book of mine I'm not going to lash out at them. I just see that they have a different opinion than me and move on.

  • @Thaza
    @Thaza 5 років тому +1

    I am a bit older than some people here and I actually love to analyze books I read with friends and it's really fun to see how we all react differently to things. Someone is always saying "the book was sooo slooow" when someone thinks it was perfect, or when that first person is hyped, the second thinks the plot was erratic. We all have the things we are looking for, and everyone seems to pick up different things, up to the point that was the ending happy or sad.
    The problem arises when there are a lot emotions involved, because when I feel that sort of blinding love towards a book or aspect of it, I tend to deep down know that it wasn't perfect, but I am not yet ready to see it in uglier light. Usually then the best way is to tell that you are feeling too emotionally attached to the book/main character/etc and let others know that pointing mistakes hurts, so they know to thread carefully. They can tell their opinion and review, but they know to soften the words and remember also to bring something positive to discussion. And, well, sometimes you just have to wait when the emotional connection isn't as strong, and then you are ready to listen even negative reviews; you can't force it, so just know your mind and listen to your feelings, and I always want to remind that you are allowed to like badly written books, problematic books and unpopular books: only you can decide what books you like, and not a single other person will have your experience while reading the same book.

My favorite book/series is Red Queen, and even though it has common tropes and it can be slow, and that's why it hurts when you talk about it, cuz that's all I've heard from here... but I still love you're channel and respect ur opinion. I personally get very hot and out of breath when someone says they don't like my fave book, but I do my best to respect them even so. I know that there are things that could be changed in Red Queen, but keep in mind, Red Queen was Victoria's first book, and all the events- no matter how slow- had some sort of part to play in the end. Even if you haven't gotten there yet. Anywaaays, some books that I sort of enjoyed that also bored me were Divergent, Hunger Games, and City of Ash (or whatever that book is called, I cannot remember at this moment). Keep making vids Jesse, you're awesome!!

    I feel both sides of this. But we have to remember that everyone has different experiences that affect whether or not they like a certain books. Even if one person doesn’t like it, there are always a ton of people who did that you can celebrate with instead of being mean to the ones who didn’t 😊

    Thank you so much for addressing this. I feel it is especially hard for the younger readers or readers who don't feel they have a lot of irl support. Hearing you say this and empathizing with them will help them grow as people. For both sides of the coin. 💖💖 (EDIT: also I love that you have so much fun with these videos. It inspires me~)

    Yeah I know the feeling. There is this book that I grew up reading and loving. And I remember in elementary school, I gave it to one of my friends (force her to take it 😁). And then asked her how it was and she completely hated it. The memory breaks my heart even to this day 💔💔💔

    Jesse, you manage to make me smile every single time. Such a great video again! And about opinions on books, we all are individuals. It's no big deal at all if someone thinks differently. To be honest, I find it actually quite interesting to chat with someone who has a different opinion than I do. It is just important to remember the fact that we all love and hate different things. We have to try to express opinions wisely to make sure no one gets hurt or anything. Goes with any kind of opinions actually🤷

    Hi Jesse, thank you for making this video. Apart from opinions on books, the video very much relates to life in general - how to react in situations when people don’t agree with us or try to put us down by dissing our opinions just because they think they have more superior experiences . At the end of the day, it’s just their opinions, not facts. This video illustrates how a shift in ones’s thinking and can change the way we see perceive an issue and make us less upset. :)

    My former best friend and I shared the love for books, it was one of the thing that really brought us so close. She always refused to read my favorite book series, she said that she didn't like and wasn't appealing for her, which I can understand. But the way she said she didn't like it really made me upset, I can easily take that you don't want to read a book, I have books that I surely don't even want to hold, but saying you surely don't like a book without even reading it, it's just a big no non for me, you have to experience something to say you didn't like it. On the other hand, I liked her favorite books but I wasn't head over heels with it, which hasn't changed. And then we basically had an argument so bad that now we don't even talk anymore, but that wasn't about books. My point is, you can dislike a book but you can't say you hate it before you read it.
    I love your videos, by the way, you always make me laugh and I just want your book collection. SO MANY BOOKS... WHY I AM SO POOR... WHY I DON'T HAVE SO MAY BOOKS... And nothing, I live in a 3 floor house with my family and we have books even in the bathroom... so yeah I have tons of books, just not the ones I want....
    And I know it's trivia but, I just discover we share the birthday. When I saw it I way like: "Oh, didn't see that coming"

    I needed this video. I get so heated when people talk shit about the Beautiful Creatures series because that book opened my eyes to the world of reading. I had hated reading my entire life. (I’m 22.) I thought books were boring and when I was younger I used to get headaches whenever I tried to read. And then a couple months ago I decided to read Beautiful Creatures after watching the movie and my entire life changed. I am now a full on obsessive reader. I’ve read 32 books ( most 300-450 pages ) since the beginning of August. The thing is now when I look through Beautiful Creatures I realize it wasn’t the most well written and there are a lot of issues but it’s still a very important series to me and I can’t stand seeing bad reviews about it. Lol

    This is so true though!
    I usually just act all shocked and offended, then just stare at the person intensely for the rest of the day in a joking sort of way, though, I love that we all have books we love and hate and I think its perfectly OK!
    My favourite series is hands down Miss Peregrine's, I'm still trying to make my friends get round to reading them!

    I feel like I related to everything you talked about. My favorite book is Turtles All the Way Down by John Green. It helped to realize that I needed therapy and got me out of a dark time. I don't think I would've gotten into therapy without this book, so it probably saved my life. It was also the first book that made love reading again. A lot of people say the book isn't they were expecting, which I understand but I got something so much better than what I was expecting. It's hard not to angry at people who don’t like the book because the book represents me.
