I can relate -.- I have so many books that I've started, then put aside to read something else I was in the mood to read. Then by the time I feel like going back to one I already forgot everything and have to restart, but get distracted by YET AGAIN another book that grabs my attention.

Captured in Words I almost always stops reading 100 or so pages from the end... It's such a vicious cycle... I have so many books I have started and have yet to finished because I'm just not in the mood or I want to read the book in another format....

So sorry to hear about your mom passing away. I know what that's like, as my step dad passed away and I lost interest in a lot of things afterwards. Actually the reason I started a booktube channel later on was to help cope with that, and it's helped me a lot over the years! Omg and Game of Thrones was also a book I read halfway through but ended up putting down for some reason. I'm still interested in the series, so I'll have to just restart it at some point or another :P

I am a mood reader too but I kind of set up a structure for myself? I read a YA Fantasy Novel, then a more realistic fiction/contemporary one or horror or poetry book and then back to Fantasy. This helps me not mix up series or worlds as easily and accounts for my mood swings with reading!

What I find ultimately sucks with being a mood reader is when you have to read a book for school, because you are never in the mood to read it. Then you end up being in the mood to read it THE DAY AFTER the assignment for it was due, and you no longer have the book.

This sums up my 'normal' reading behavior perfectly. Once in a while I can just plow through a book, but I am such a mood reader that if I don't stop, it tends to effect my interest in the book. People always ask why I have so many books I am working on at once but it is all because my mood and interest in the moment keeps changing. And yes to every one of the problems and reaction you mentioned!

This video is quite relatable! I'm a mood reader too. I usually do manage to push through to finish a book if the book isn't too long, but if I buy (or am gifted) a book it can be ages until I'm in the mood to read it (also because I have a lot of unread books). I often pre-order books I'm really excited for, and then when it's release day I often find myself just not in the mood for that type of book, so it stays on my shelf for a while. I can't make monthly TBRs as I know I never stick to them. I usually decide my next read once I've finished my previous read. The exceptions to that: are 1) when I've got library loans, those take priority as they have to be read before my owned books, so in that case I have to choose my next read from my remaining library loans, and 2) once a month I hold my own read-a-thon (for me and some friends) for a few days, in which I read specific books (lately graphic novels, graphic memoirs and manga), I usually make a TBR for this beforehand and manage to stick to it (but it's only a few days, and usually consists of the series I'm currently reading as well as any unread graphic works I've purchased recently that I haven't read yet).
I've been re-reading a long book, that I loved when I first read it, but I find myself only in the mood for it sporadically, and so progress has been slow over the past few months (it's over 1000 pages, and I think I'm at page 280ish). That said, because I've read it before, it's less hard to remember what has been going on.
I really don't like it when friends keep asking me if I've read a specific favourite of theirs yet. A book is so much more enjoyable when I'm in just the right mood for it, and so hard to get through when I'm really not in the mood for it. I much prefer to wait until I'm in the right mood for the book, and I really don't like it if a friend keeps asking me about whether I've read the book yet, and then I have to disappoint them every time. I admit I have started books because people kept asking, but I usually find I don't enjoy it as much then as I would have, had I been in the right mood for it.
I'm sorry you struggle so much with this :(. I would like to be able to make a monthly TBR or stuff like that, I'm a planning in lots of areas of my life, but I can't do buddy-reads very well or read-a-thons with themes or things like that, because I'm often not in the right mood for specific genres or books.

  • @aliciacroft
    @aliciacroft 6 років тому

    YES!!!!!!!!!
If you are not 100% feelin it, dont try - or continue! The timing is either wrong, i'm in a book hangover and need a break for my brain to process the last one, or its just not right for me.
I think its an intuition thing. I keep thinking im in the mood for something (surface feelings) when its actually off and I should listen to my instincts/gut-feeling/deeper feeling. I hate taking a break from reading even for a day - sometimes if I switch to an audiobook its okay, but mostly my brain needs space to be myself, without being lost in someone else's world for a moment.
I just have to accept if a book wont vibe with me, and never read it, despite how shiny it might have appeared at one point, otherwise it will grate across me the whole time (for no good reason). You captured the struggle.

LITERALLY ME!!! It’s such a pain!! Literally, like, half of the books on my shelves I haven’t read yet because I’m waiting until I’m in the right mood to read them. And then when I am in the mood to read them, I can’t do it with my other life situations at the time! I ALMOST started FINALLY reading Throne of Glass because I was totally in the mood for it! BUT, IT WAS THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND I HAD OTHER STUFFS TO DO AND NO TIME TO READ!!! So aggravating. Glad I’m not the only one!

  • @FereNike03

Definitely me!) I hate that mood, when you found a book that you've wanted to read, but you are NOT IN THE MOOD. And then it just seats somewhere on your bookshelves and you are passing it for years. But my "favourite" kind of situation is when you started the book, and it's good, and interesting, and... You read a few chapters, then put it back to the shelf and in a month you want to come back to reading.....but you don't remember anything! Oh, hate that situation. And I hated being a mood reader for some time, bit now I love the way I read books - it's hard, but funny at the same time))

Oh my goodness! This video was so clever & funny! I don't set monthly TBRs for myself so once I finish a book I just pick whatever appeals to me next on my shelves. However once I start, I must finish! No changies!

I only choose the next book I want to read after I'm finished another book. I don't make a TBR list because I know I may not be in the mood to read it. I love finishing a book and figuring out what genre I wanna read next. Keeps it simple.

That friend part is so true! My friend lent me a stack of books I said I wanted to read and I’ve only read one book out of that stack. I have no idea when I’m going to get to the rest of it. Good thing she doesn’t live far from me so I can take my time.

SOOO RELATABLE 😂🙈 WOW! I have slowly grown into a mood reader these past few years and was so thrown off by my actions when I put multiple books down in a row when I was halfway through them...but I JUST WASNT IN THE MOOD! But, I think books can be that much more enjoyable when they DO fit the mood for a mood reader! Good video Jesse!

I RELATE SO MUCH TO THIS! Ive been in the biggest slump for like a year now, all because whenever i start a book i feel like its not GOOD and i stop reading, despite it being really popular and having great reviews. then i realised, maybe its just me and i was right. this has been fucking me up so much and im so happy i saw this video because i thought it was only me

I don't even create a TBR because I pick books up to read like I breathe air. I have 8 "currently reading" on my Goodreads shelf, plus I just started a book last night. Being a mood reader is hard, but I love it because it means that when I do get back to an old book I end up enjoying it.

I was nodding my head as well! This is 100% me... I’m actually reading 5 books right now and I haven’t finished several that I need to get back to. I hate it when I’m so into a book and then get distracted with a different book and start reading that one. It’s how I’m reading 5 at the moment. I’ll also read a book, get through until the middle and then get bored and put it off. My room is a Library at the moment with books like this.

Ha structure! I am flip floping between books getting that breezy look in my hair from how strong my booklash is!
Thanks so much for this video Jesse, I no longer feel so alone in my guilt hoarding of books in my TBR pile!

I am more structured with my reading. But sometimes I change around my planned TBR for other books to fit in. I try to finish books because I don’t like pushing them to the side. But I do relate when your friend keeps asking to read your favorite book and I still haven’t read it. I just haven’t gotten around to it but I will do it.

I relate to this so much! I started reading Thunderhead and got to page 404 and then decided I wasn't feeling it and let it sit on my floor for a month before returning it to the library. It's such a struggle being a mood reader.

Definitely a mood reader. I pined for a book because the cover was gorgeous. Was given that book as a gift. Three years ago. Have I read it yet? No, I sure haven't. But I will. Someday. When the mood strikes.

wanting a sequel and then not feeling it when it comes out is definitely something that happens to me way too many times. Also, reading a book and stopping and then not feeling it anymore when you pick it up again after months.

This is honestly so relatable but I also hate leaving books halfway through so I either stop reading altogether or end up pushing my way through the book and not liking the book as much as I would have

THIS IS SO RELATABLE. i always start so many books and then i let that pile sit next to my bed, judging me, so this month i decided i wouldn't start another book until i finished all the ones i've started. it's going great because i only have 2 books to read, and then i can start others. also the sequel thing?? me all the time and i hate it. loved this video 💕

I have also started and abandoned books even if I loved them Jesse. I know life gets busy or if I don't have a quiet time then I get disracted or am not in the mood to read. I feel you. I seem to like listening to an audiobook whilst doin dishes or laundry. I tend to say if I can do a chapter in the morning or before bed then I am happy and hope I don't get too hooked into the book if I don't have time to read more. I am glad you said just to enjoy the process of reading and remember your love of it. I currently took out a library book I am readin I started reading while visiting my Grandpa at the hospital. It's called Openly Straight. I dunno if you'd like it Jesse but I kinda picked it up for fun initially. I love it and hope to finish it despite having a tbr at home. I am proud to say I almost finished reading through The Bible as well. I used to remember finding the short stories in english class we read depressing and I mainly like happy endings although I have experimented trying different genres. I think that's why I wanna read Goosbumps. Thx for the video Jesse. Love you. You make my day.

a solution I've found to my mood book problem. I buy or borrow 1 book at a time, and it has to be something that is really peaking my interest in that moment. When I make long to be read lists, I usually just pick one at a time. When I finish that book, I then have to make a new to be read list because my interest change all the time!

I can totally relate to that. I'm also a mood reader and often books end up on my currently reading list and stay there for a looong period of time simply because I don't feel like reading it. And I never really have any TBRs for myself only suggestions what I could read e.g. this summer but I know I will probably read one or two and the rest will be completely different. The only thing I do manage is to read borrowed books once I have started them as there is always this voice inside my head reminding me that I have to return it
Thanks for the video loved it :)

That, is exactly what is happening to me this week. I have so many books that I want to read, but once I have them in front of me, I don´t feel like doing it and I propose it for the next day, and the next, and so they spend a lot of time ... and I never read them.

I have a hard time putting a book down for any reason. Even if I dislike a book, I finish reading it. I am sort of a mood reader, but even if that mood changes, I continue to read the book because sometimes it puts me back in the mood!

I'm sort of mood reader in that whenever I go to pick my next book I go for whatever I feel like reading. But, I still set TBR's. Sometimes, I do stick to TBR's, just in a different order than I initially thought. Occasionally, I need to read something else because my TBR might have a common theme that I'm just not feeling at the moment. Usually though, I don't set down a book. I try to stick to reading one book at a time and (hopefully) finishing it before I start my next one. I may take a break and pick up a manga (or something different), but usually I try not to let the story go for too long or I just might not get back to it.

This is actually really relatable... I will be super hyped to start reading a book, and I will be super into it at first, but then I decide that there is something else to read or I want to re-read something else... It's really annoying
