I am a hunter, and fisherman, I have trophy's of animals that decorate my walls.... At the same time I see this abuse of government as sickening.... I have always understood the dislike that many people have towards us hunter's. But contrary to common perception you will not find a group of people that cares for mother nature more then hunters do.... While It might be a good practice not to treat wild animals as pets, its also pretty common that a rescued animal will have a very hard time re-adapting to mother nature. This squirrel was a loved pet, and its absolutely insane that our government would abuse its authority in this manner... I think humanity needs to re-embrace common sense as it just doesn't seem to be that common these days....
Ok so he has had this squirrel for 7 years, it lived inside with him, safe to say it didn't have rabies. Also what that animal rescuer FAILED to mention is that some animals when rescued young, or injured, may never be able to be returned to the wild because they either lack from injury or didn't develop from being raised by humans, the ability to use wild instincts and survive in the wild. Animals that are not able after injury, or lack instinctual survival skills are usually sent to a sanctuary or just fine living with the people that raised them. This was all unnecessary, and sounds like a personal issue, where someone wanted to hurt this guy. Sad

You don’t have to euthanize an animal to test for rabies. It just takes quarantining them for a week or so because rabies shows signs pretty quickly. This story is maddening and very sad, especially since the couple were planning to become rehabilitators.
Not entirely true. Some animals can carry the diseases but not show symptoms. But they likely didn't need to euthanize the squirrel as almost no small animal would survive an attack by a predator with rabies. (According to the NY Dept of Health.)

Oh My GOD. How horribly sad and perverse of New York State. How HORRIBLE
Sad
Yeah, she struck me as the typical "rules for thee not for me" personality type. No doubt she has many such animals in her care that can never be returned to the wild, but she'll justify it her mind since she has the "government sanctioned authority" to do so.

Is that what she was doing? You think CBS heard the news of the squirrel's death, scheduled an interview with Emily, drove out to Emily's rescue, filmed her making these remarks, returned to the studio, and edited the interview into this report on time to air hours after the squirrel's death?
Or did they already have a footage of an previous interview with her talking about her work, and decide to just stick the footage into this report?
Doesn't look like Emily even knows about this incident. If they wanted her timely reaction to the squirrel's death, they'd have to have done it in a phone or video interview. Not in person. And they'd have asked her direct questions about this particular incident and particular squirrel, instead of just letting her make vague and generic comments about squirrels and rescue work generally.

You don’t have to euthanize an animal to test for rabies. It just takes quarantining them for a week or so because rabies shows signs pretty quickly. I was once badly bitten by a neighbor’s cat, but it only took about a week with him in quarantine to determine he, and I, were fine. This story is maddening and very sad, especially since the couple were planning to become rehabilitators.
I was bitten by dog when I was a kid and we got the rabies report the next day .
Not entirely true. Some animals can carry the diseases but not show symptoms. But they likely didn't need to euthanize the squirrel as almost no small animal would survive an attack by a predator with rabies. (According to the NY Dept of Health.)
