Really great commentary by Rocky Marciano: an insider's point of view. Rarely heard this kind of insight in years of watching fights. Extremely interesting to hear his perspective.
Superb display by Floyd. So fast yet elusive and able to deny Archie punching room by getting close in with both arms positioned defensively. Terrific combinations attacking both body/ribs and then the Head. Designed to confuse and unsettle and it worked. Great KO punch. Archie was clearly on unsteady legs when the Ref stopped it. Thanks for the post. After many years, I've now seen it :-)
Both are legends. Floyd has that great training from Cus. Archie Moore was so unique. I loved how he slipped a jab and hit with an uppercut once underneath the head.
Very good commentary from Rocky Marciano. I enjoyed his analysis and it was honest. Great leaping Left Hook from Floyd to end the fight. He even lifted Archie off his feet. He was still dazed when the Ref stopped it so it shows that he was probably concussed. Very capable and organised stance and posture by Floyd. A worthy winner and Champion.
The fight is Floyd's and I'm a huge patterson fan but you gotta respect Archie Moore the guys record is really something he Won 185 fights with 131KO's and lost 23 times with 7 draws, Now that's ring expierience
@@Yobachi2007 I don't think Archie ever had dementia before he died. His longevity and health in later years probably come down to his excellent use of the cross guard. A lot of boxers used it to great effect after him, including George Foreman in his comeback.
37 year old Patterson troubled Ali. In the first fight Patterson was fighting with an injured back. Prime Patterson gives Ali trouble although he doesn't beat him.
Beautiful Gazelley by Patterson. Even tho ol Archie is a legend in the ring himself. A fighter that should have been Champion alot longer than he was. Definitely 2 LEGENDS of the game. Crazy thing is these days no one even tries to mimic these great fighters....
Patterson was a world ranked contender from the age 19 to age 37. He was 25 years old when he had what was probably his best ever performance in the rematch against Ingemar Johansson. Moore was great but Patterson was a bad match-up for him, especially a hungry, motivated Patterson. On a better night Moore may have caught him but not on this night.
Daaaaamn,u can sure see the same style in Tyson and Patterson! Tyson just had the power and was more aggressive, but D Amata did a damn good job with both of them!!!
Patterson here was SO much better than he was later on. His left jab was messing up Moore. Interesting how much slower Patterson's hands got later on. Marciano's comments are excellent.
This is weird like watching a skinnier version of Mike Tyson in black and white. Floyd Patterson also grew up in Brooklyn, both got arrested at a young age and were sent to boys schools and both started training w/ Cus D'Amato about the same age 13 & 14, both became youngest ever heavyweight champs. I think Tyson was a lot more aggressive, a little better head movement and defense, and a lot more power. Tyson seemed to have perfected D'Amato's style. Kevin Rooney and Teddy Atlas probably made a difference too. Tyson emulated Jack Dempsey's aggressiveness.
D'Amato said it himself that Tyson was the one that completely mastered the Peek-a-book fighting style that he manifested the style that he always imagined it to be.
Patterson looked especially impressive in this fight! Unfortunately, Moore was a couple of hundred years old at this point. I enjoyed the bout, as well as Marciano's commentary. Thank you!
Rocky gives Floyd his due in the commentary. Thoughtful remarks on Moore's strategy but real enthusiasm for young Patterson's skills. I've always thought Archie looked flat in this fight, though. Reflexes and punching were sharper vs. Marciano, and there was some talk wondering if this bout was on the level. No way to tell. But you can tell Floyd was a superb, small heavyweight, and even against moderate sized big guys, he could look impressive. But once you get up to the Liston-sized heavies, Floyd was a man without a country. Too bad Cruiserweight wasn't around.
The Floyd Patterson of the Archie Moore fight deserves alot of greatness and skill. Floyd of 56 era against 65 Floyd against Ali would have been a fight look at Floyd he would have given Ali alot more trouble if it was the floyd that fought Archie Moore. I respect Floyd however he should have proven himself more against Foley, Cooper and Machen, Williams and seen his real talents proper. Even Willie Pastrano fight would have made him a greater champion than he was given. Go Floyd the best

Marciano was the commentator but it was Jimmy Breslin who wrote the commentary.Styles make fights. The only thing that could beat an old Archie Moore was speed, and Patterson had the fastest hands of all.Big strong punchers were made for a crafty fighter like Moore, look at how at his advanced age he beat Durelle. It's just that Marciano was SUPER strong. Now on the other hand Patterson was made for a a human boulder like Marciano. He was destroyed by Johansson in the first fight and almost lost to him in the third. But I loved all three.Moore was the master, Patterson proved his greatness in his later fights, look at how much more easily he destroyed Cooper than did Ali.And as for Marciano, well - Angelo Dundee said he would have destroyed Lennox Lewis. If McCall and Rahmann kayoed him with one punch, so could Marciano.
I agree. Marciano's opponents were permanently damaged after fighting him. Roland LaStarza needed surgery on both of his arms because of his crab defense. Archie, Ezzard Jersey Joe, Joe Louis, Don Cockell, Lee Savold were never the same after getting beaten by Marciano. Marciano was brutal in a way the fans don't understand today.
@@browntrout611 I'd take Archie and Louis out of there. Louis only came back because he had to and was already past his prime. Archie went on to box for more than another decade and only lost to some of the greats like Patterson and Ali. Add Vingo Carmine to the list, though. His career ended the very day he faced Rocky!
@@Cableguy15 Archie's eight year record after the Marciano fight is questionable when you look closer at it. He fought two wrestlers who never boxed before, fighters with 50/50 records or 20 and 0 with no contenders on their resume. Archie's chin was shot for awhile after the Marciano damage as evidenced by how easily Patterson knocked him around. But chins of veteran fighters like Arch can improve with time and a little rest even though they're never quite the same as before. I see this in the UFC fighters like Stipe Miocic and George St. Pierre who took time off and came back pretty strong. So did Arch to a degree. He had a passion for boxing like nobody else.
I think if Patterson had fought Marciano, he would have got in a lot of shots, but Marciano would have taken patterson's best shots and come at him like a freight train just like veryone else. Marciano was a pitbull in the ring.
Old man Moore beat more than a few 20 year olds while himself in his 40's. It was just not his night, he had better nights after this (watch the Moore-Durelle bouts for example) and he was of course past his very best as well.
it's too bad that didn't fight at LHWT could've been the G.O.A.T at it. But there's just no topping the Heavyweight Championship of the World. And he won it at 21! WOW!
@TheGreatA Moore made a couple of records that will probably never be broken. He has the most KO's by any fighter (131), won the Light Heavyweight championship at the age of 39 and held it for 10 years, fought many 15 rounds fights after the age of 40,fought 10 fights a year for many years, and is the only man to have fought Ali,Marciano,Patterson and Ezzard Charles. True legend and what boxing is all about....
Marciano really really hurt Moore in their famous, and great bout. The knockdowns and the knockout Moore sustained that night probably ruined him for good -- at the very least they robbed him of speed, reflexes and also some endurance. The cumulative effect of concussions is now well-established. Here Patterson was young, fresh, powerful and fast, and he himself had yet to be knocked out. Moore should never have been licensed to fight Ali later on at his age and with his history of having been knocked out; and Patterson shouldn't have faced Ali either because he too was too damaged by that time by Liston and Johansson. It's a brutal and unforgiving 'sport' ...
@wamiqm ---u cant answer that question? Patterson had one of the worst chins in history. U dont think that Rocky would catch him and level him sometime over 15 (or even 12 rd ) fight? Floyd was very fast, and he punched pretty well, but he would not have a chance.
@TA152H01 Also Ali was heavier then, which plays a role too. Still whats most impressing, at any point in alis career, is how he was able to recover so quickly from hard blows, the cooper fight included. just as he was woken up, he came back and gave cooper the beating of his life.
Unfortunately, this video is slightly sped up. You can tell by watching the ref's movements as opposed to the fighters', and it's confirmed when Archie goes down. The counts are VERY fast.
Patterson was never as good again after his first title defense against Hurricane Jackson. His fights with Moore and with Jackson in his first title defense were his prime.
Patterson looks as fast as tyson, but don't have the power like mike, he may be faster, but it does seem kinda strange seeing someone else moving like mike, when i was younger i would watch mike fight and i knew he moved different than other fighters but i didnt know why, pretty cool style
Cus built Tyson up to fight just like Patterson only difference is Tyson has a power shot behind almost everything he throws with his Cus trained speed. although I think floyd is slightly faster. Man its such a great diverse and successful style of fighting.
Ezio Trinacria If memory serves me right Cus said in an interview Tyson was just as fast if not a -bit- faster than Patterson, which if you think about it, is really scary lol.
mistahjion I think your right I'm remembering this too. I just cant remember what interview it was tho. If he did say that very true, that is a scary thing.
Ezio Trinacria he did say that. And I would agree. Floyd was a different kind of fast. He was good at ducking punches. But he didn't really throw good shots after the duck. Mike moved his head side to side, slipping the jab. But he didn't lose any stamina doing that. He would take a quick step to the side throw 2 shots to the body and a vicious upper cut to the head. Mike moved quicker, and had way faster hands and I don't think I even have to say that he hit waaaaay harder then Patterson. Mike truly mastered the peak a boo technic. Floyd did not
Mike Brady well to be fair, Cus picked up Mike at a REALLY young age, and by the time Mike went pro he had like what? 5-6 years working under Cus' peek-a-boo. However, to make it more interesting, Atlas, Cus, and Rooney all agree Mike's overall athleticism was better than Patterson's iirc.
@auraliztic Maybe not one of the all time greatest Heavyweights, but pound for pound he ranks highly, in my opinion. He was more of a natural Lt. Heavy, and in fact started his career there with great success. Brilliant fighter at his best. If only he'd have kept at that weight for the majority of his prime.
You’d think the referee would have had enough fricken brains to stop the fight after Moore was knocked down. He was in a daze and completely defenseless.
Archie Moore has more heart than you may think! At 42, he went passed 5 rounds when he should have retired @ 35. Moore lost to patterson but i must say he was very impressive because he proved that an older many could go a good distance! IF Moore was young like Patterson, he would have gone the distance even longer or would have won! People do not realize how hard it is to go just 5 rounds - young or older! Try it and find out for yourself! Ali did the impossible with Foreman @ 38age!
At this point in time Patterson had UNLIMITED potential. Once he had the title his manager Cus D'Amato would not let him fight his top contenders (Machen and Folley) and unfortunately stopped his development.
i agree muskratrowdy, i dont see how floyde could avoid beign knocked out by the rock..especially over a 15 rd period, floyde would never shack the rock with any punches but the rock on the other hand lol would kill floyde with power shots, floyde would last no longer with his questionable chin than the rock would allow it to go once he got really aggresive with floyde..it would look something like the patterson liston fight.
@TA152H01 in his prime, prior to the break of 3 years when he wasnt allowed to box, probably his legs and reflexes were alis strongest weapon then. but his hands were pretty quick and most of all his punches were very accurate.
If Patterson wanted he could have been LH Champion. Actually, considering he beat LH Champion Moore....just saying. Today he would have the chance to capture the title at 160/MW, 168/SMW, 175/LH, Cruiserweight. I can't see anybody beating him from at least 160-175 right now.
What about Marciano V Patterson in 1956 if he hadn't retired? I'd pick Marciano because of Floyd's shaky punch resistance but I wouldn't say the outcome is certain.
Interesting. Most of the comments here are about the loser not the winner. All I'll add about "ageless Archie," is that in his memoires he said that he overtrained for Marciano and undertrained for Floyd. As for Floyd he'd have had a better legacy, had he defended his title against the dangerous contenders of the time, rather than the likes of Pete Rademacher and Brian London.
@loyaldude10 'due' to his weak chin? Its a great style to have regardless of chin, and I doubt Cus would have trained him differently had he been tougher..
@TA152H01 He got up quickly and won the fights convincingly (although the Henry Cooper fight with the gloves affair might be a lil peculiar lol). I also think Pattersons hands were quicker than Alis. But it couldnt make him last against the big guys in the heavy weight division. too bad cruiser wasnt invented back then.
Moore arose at the count of 8! However, and unfortunately, his complaints were to no avail. The fight was just getting warmed up. One wonders if Moore would have trapped Patterson as Floyd came in for the kill and got careless. It would not have been the first time in his legendary career that he had been on the floor from whence he arose and became a knockout victor. Moore was a master at forcing heavy exchanges on the ropes and landing mind altering shots spelling defeat for many a careless fighter.
Moore was just too old for a prime Floyd Patterson. Maybe if they were both at their best at LightHeavyweight the story might be different, but in this fight he was outclassed all the way.
i dont think it would matter if ali was in his prime or not, floyde just wouldnt win, floyde is a better conventional boxer than ali, but ali is more athletically gifted not to mention tougher and heavier and just stronger.
Old Cus certainly had his fighters clued in in the weaving attack. There's a lot of similarity between Floyd and Mike Tyson. The big difference is power. Tyson/Marciano would have been an incredible fight. Tyson slightly faster and about as powerful, Marciano miles tougher.
@TA152H01 I dont know man... Ive just watched that clay - cooper fight again and it really was a massive punch that hit ali... and cooper COULD punch. still in 1975 ali was tougher, as if he "leaned" how to take a beating- to compensate for his legs, which werent the same no more.
The "Old Mongoose" ... he was a legend. He was fighting at 40 when most were out of the fight game at 30. R.I.P. brother Moore
I'm here because we demo'd the kitchen and found a newspaper from 12/1/56 behind the cabinets. This was on the front page. Those are 2 big dudes!

At this point in time Patterson had UNLIMITED potential.
Once he had the title his manager Cus D'Amato would not let him fight his top contenders (Machen and Folley) and unfortunately stopped his development.
Best Hook in the buisness... wow did he load up on that thing, he was so crouched his bum nearly hit the ground before he exploded!
i agree muskratrowdy, i dont see how floyde could avoid beign knocked out by the rock..especially over a 15 rd period, floyde would never shack the rock with any punches but the rock on the other hand lol would kill floyde with power shots, floyde would last no longer with his questionable chin than the rock would allow it to go once he got really aggresive with floyde..it would look something like the patterson liston fight.
@rickosuave29 no its rocky marciano
Floyd Patterson left hook lifted Moor
@TA152H01 in his prime, prior to the break of 3 years when he wasnt allowed to box, probably his legs and reflexes were alis strongest weapon then. but his hands were pretty quick and most of all his punches were very accurate.
Patterson reminds me of the people that learnt how to weave but they just to do that, no punches follow after the weaving and slipping
If Patterson wanted he could have been LH Champion. Actually, considering he beat LH Champion Moore....just saying.
Today he would have the chance to capture the title at 160/MW, 168/SMW,
175/LH, Cruiserweight.
I can't see anybody beating him from at least 160-175 right now.
2 great fighting legends patterson and moore but patterson was better on this night
Moore was actually favored to win this fight.
i hate fighters who send their head in first like that.as a trainer i would never let a fighter do that!!
show the Leonard vs Green Fight hi being waiting on Deck 🦆 secure
What about Marciano V Patterson in 1956 if he hadn't retired?
I'd pick Marciano because of Floyd's shaky punch resistance but I wouldn't say the outcome is certain.
@Specktakool ---they were both trained by Cus D'amato. patterson had to use that style, due to his weak chin
Respect to Floyd Patterson. He actully beat the best heavyweight boxer of all time when he took revenge on Ingmar Johannson, undefeated world champion
The best boxer of all time hahha, Ingmar Johansson is a nobody.
TheJoker43211
lol name ONE who is greater than him!
I'll name 3 Muhhamad Ali the guy who beat Floyd Patterson. Mike Tyson, Joe Louis.
TheJoker43211 ok, you won :P but Johansson is atleast the greatest swedish boxer
Lol, yeah I agree Johansson was the greatest Swedish boxer.
@Nyatta06 is wrong.
Liston knocked Patterson out for a count of ten in their first fight.
Did the same in the 2nd fight.
That because he was a light heavy fighting heavys
Marciano easily.
@loyaldude10 'due' to his weak chin? Its a great style to have regardless of chin, and I doubt Cus would have trained him differently had he been tougher..
@drexelur1 usually yes.. but watch the Foreman-Moorer fight....
cus d amato rocks !
