    I shudder to remember that i used to do my pixel art through Gimp instead of Aseprite. Krita looks better than Gimp, but Aseprite is delightfully perfect for what I needed

      Agreed! Aseprite is a pure joy to work in. I love its pixel art GUI aesthetic.

      What does Aseprite better than Krita? I tried Aseprite but i have a ton of stuff i miss from it (Like the possibility to add references,blending modes with folders, save presets for canvas sizes etc)

    Thanks for this! I've been making 3D games for so long and have been wanting to do a 2D game. I've even been watching Pixel Art tutorials to learn how to make pixel art. This is good to know about Krita though

      Awesome, thanks for the comment! I was surprised how well Krita worked for pixel art. It doesn't have the full features of Photoshop or the street cred of Aseprite, but it gets the job done and excels as a digital painting app. Good luck with the jump to 2D!

    Ive seen a massive problem with Krita that even GIMP doesnt have and that is with trying to draw perfect circles with pixel art. Even if you try to hold shift to maintain the circles aspect ratio in Krita, youll still get circles that look like unsymetrical playdough balls, especially on small image dimensions, which is what pixel art is meant to be drawn on, and this happens because Krita is 100% optimized for pixel art and uses something called "Sub pixel Precision" which is meant for Krita's main purpose of digital painting instead of pixel art.

      You can use a special pixel art brush with 'pixel perfect' options built into the brush. might make it turn out better, idk. About to try it myself, been using Aseprite and Promotion NG. Would be nice to have the same workflow/program for all my 2D art though.

    Hey, man.
    I really liked your video, it was very well explained and I needed these tips.
    But, I only have one question: before upscaling the pixel art, how big was the canvas you used? Or wich size you recommend to use?
    You really helped me too much with the video and I want to do a little pixel art work in this program that I have been using recently. :)

    • @mobypixel
      @mobypixel  3 роки тому +7

      Thanks for watching! For this piece the canvas was 120x120. A lot of pixel art in old retro games were multiples of 32. 32, 64, 128, etc. It's really just up to you and how you want to use the art. Best of luck creating!

    Krita has one caveat for pixel art imo. When you use line tool, it does not snap to your selected pixel, it snaps to one of the four corners of your pixel. It makes it extremely irritating when you want to draw a perfect line, because you have to take into account pixels four corners of pixels when drawing, and then at the end of the line you dont have any feedback saying to you what part of pixel you select, you have to wait for the line preview to update and to show if you didnt f*&$ something up, then to correct those weird angles that don't care what kind of line you tried to draw. Maybe it is fixable, but I couldn't find the option to turn this off. Whoever had an idea to use this feature as default should go on a permanent vacation from coding pixelart graphical programs.

    • @mobypixel
      @mobypixel  Рік тому

      Thanks, Linux Rant! What's strange is that if you draw a line quickly you don't get that same behavior.

    • @Utrilus
      @Utrilus 3 місяці тому +1

      I disabled snap to pixel under view > snap to > snap pixel.
      That removed the snapping problem that snaps to pixel edges.

    Limited features ???
    All i see skill issue
    It has way more features than asprite and very similar to Photoshop except AI for photo editing which is irrelevant for pixel art
    You can't use the forbidden techniques on this video with asprite btw 👇

    Yo , thx for video , but it’s possible to create it Krita sprites?

    • @mobypixel
      @mobypixel  3 місяці тому

      Sure, you can make sprite with it. You could make different layers for each sprite and export them separately, but there isn't an option to animate between them in the app like Aseprite.

  • @simpson6700
    @simpson6700 7 місяців тому

    i don't get the hate for gimp. it's not like you use any special tools for your pixel art and in the end of the day gimp can draw pixels and has a fill bucket. i would understand it if you used any brushes, filters or effects, but you don't.

    • @mobypixel
      @mobypixel  7 місяців тому

      I'm all about free, open source tools. Maybe it has gotten better since I tried it last. I think the biggest issue I had with Gimp was input latency. It might be better on PC, but on Mac if I draw a line, it takes a second before the pixels are render on the screen. It made it unusable as a realtime art tool for me. These days I tend to use Affinity Photo for everything--not because it's the best, but because it's what I have. Thanks for the comment!

    • @simpson6700

    Back when I used to try and make the pixels, I used Pyxl Edit, which is not free, but only $9. I've also seen it pop up in software bundles and such. Krita looks like a great option, though. Good video, as always!

    • @mobypixel
      @mobypixel  3 роки тому +1

      Yo Thanks, Travis! I remember seeing Pyxl but never tried it. I'll keep an eye out for a bundle deal. I feel like Aseprite is as good as it'll get for pixel art specific programs, but it can't break my Photoshop addiction.

    Now… how do you make the outline snap into place?

    • @mobypixel
      @mobypixel  2 роки тому +1

      I usually draw my outlines pixel-by-pixel but you could duplicate the character 4 times underneath your drawing, color them all black, and move one of them up a pixel, one right, one down, and one left. I'm not sure if the Krita outlines have nearest neighbor.
