The latest installment of Fighting Game History is here, and we are covering the NESTS saga of King of Fighters! Covering KoF 99, 2000, and 2001 this video goes over all the important plot points and characters that make up these games. Often considered complicated and convoluted, I have done my best to break down the NESTS saga to its core parts so you know all the story you need to for these games! If you have no checked out the Orochi saga breakdown yet you can find it linked at the end of the video or in the video description. If you could spare a like for the video it would be greatly appreciated! 🙏
2 down, 1 more to go. I hope to have the Ash Crimson saga video covering KoF 2003, KoF 11, and KoF 13 live for the end of next week. After that... Its king of fighters XV time! Between then more news and whatever else I can dream up to be sure! Looking forward to the KoF XV launch big time!
Thank you for this, rooflemonger. Your storytelling is much greater than the one SNK chose to retell their saga stories. Yeah, I'm talking about that guy, neogeonow, who always ask for subscribers more than once annoyingly in every video he posted 😂
@@BigALBoomer KoF 14 does have a story! Just we are in the middle of the kof 14 saga right now. KoF XV is the next chapter. Everything that happened in 14 is basically the setup for 15 so there isn't much to say just yet so it wouldn't be its own video versus these sagas, where the story is fully complete
Even when the story was confusimg they still put a lot of care, emotion and tried some stuff with side characters. I hope 15 bring more of this kinda stuff back.
XV will be my frost KOF. Your videos were a big reason I got interested in it and now have the Omega edition preordered. Thanks for all the hard work putting all these videos out! It's just made the series more attractive to me and helped onboard me to the franchise.
I started with XIII, and have since gone back and played 98 2002 (big dream match entries) and Garou (tangentially-related through Fatal Fury). Had a blast with all of those even though I weirdly suck at JUST Garou and I'm not too sure why that is. Beautiful game but something about it just kicks my ass.
It’s so sad to me that the side story of team psycho soldier was dropped, it looked absolutely awesome, especially with that art. I don’t really like how KOF was meant as an SNK crossover series, but the characters crossing over have been reduced to side characters with comic relief stories (i.e. AOF team). Idk if they can even pick this plot back up since it’s been so long, but I hope they do.
Agreed the FF and AOF teams aren't nearly as important or at least don't have an important motivation for entering the tournaments as much as others. The Psycho Soldiers had an interesting arc but unfortunately Athena is the only popular one. Ron's involvement is more annoying when you consider other characters would follow after Lin for the same reason of catching Ron, so now they have a 3 person team in Lin, Duo and Xiao yet they haven't done anything with that smh.
Eh there is so many characters not everyone can be the superstar in the end. Id rather they focus on a few and make them stars rather than try to make everyone special, and then nobody is.
If there is new games of Garou or Art of Fighting, their protagonism for KOF would not be necessary, I think. I like that KOF keep their own original characters and change of protagonist like a change of generation withou forgetting the older ones. I would like that SNK retake the dragon powers plot, it seems they wanted to give some protagonism to the Psycho Soldiers, mainly Kensou, he is one of my favorites, in KOFXI he looked more matured and caring less his relation with Athena, I think he could have been a great protagonism for a saga, but since KOFXIII he go back to be the foolish boy of KOF94, so sad.
Nests saga is my favorite for obvious reasons. It brought k' and his team in kof along with some of my favorite characters like angel, k9999, seth and lin, ramon, and vanessa. Also had some the best Sprite art only surpassed by the ash saga.
I know this one comes under a lot of contention but still love the NESTS Saga as my 2nd favourite. Brought many new fan favourites for me like K', Vanessa, Ramon, Kula etc. Refreshing contrast of the villians being modern humans versus the entity Orochi and the Hakesshu and the unravelling of K' and Whip's history with the organisation along with the other Kyo clones. Plus the infamous Ignitz boss.
This is the Saga that Introduced me to the entire KOF Franchise all thanks to KOF 99 (my personal favorite Game of all Time). Also, this Storyline literally almost reminds me of the Story in the "Metal Gear (Solid)" series.
The NESTS saga brought us some of the coolest boss character designs ever made, Krizalid and Igniz (who was epically voiced by the Japanese voice actor of Cell from DBZ) are still my two favorite SNK characters and I wish they can at least return in the story, I know that Verse's destruction should revive them so...fingers crossed they do something with them in the future.
That was a spectacular summary! The NESTS saga is actually very missunderstood by many fans but if you take a deeper look at the story you can find great elements of lost passions, twists, mystery and friendship!
Just wanted to say your videos are some of my favorite on UA-cam. I was never BIG into fighting games until this year; and after finding your channel I have been really getting into fighting games. keep up the awesome work man! I'm super excited to check out your future vids on KOF.
Yep its pretty solid! Also unlike most spin off manga, its sorta canon. Sorta. Have to wait for XV to discard the parts they don't like and keep the parts they do like though
I’m so happy you’re doing this man! While also giving mechanics and tips the fact that you take your time to tell people about fighting game lore is much appreciated!
Happy that Geese and Rock will be in KOF XV! Couldn't get enough of Geese in Tekken 7, would've be really bummed if Geese wasn't in the game but I'm happy! I can wait till May, I have other fighting games to watch that'll keep me entertained
Man, the wait for the K' lore and trailer breakdown was definitely worth the wait! Seriously, though, great job making the NESTS insanity as concise as possible. Looking forward to the "Ash trolls everyone" saga next!
2 things: 33:21 - Something about Lin's face being RIGHT behind Whip's butt as they run cracks me up. 33:52 - Thanks for inputting the correct initials after you beat arcade mode.
I like it a lot. Ima coming from a fighting game with simplified controls so switching to motion inputs has been challenging but it plays nice and I usually have fun with it. I will say, I think not including cross play is a huge missed opportunity and I would love if they added that later.
This is invaluable for me, I'm writing a doujinshi based around this specific time era because it was the time era I remember the most as a kid growing up with the playstation 1 and 2 games. Thanks a lot.
thank you very much for this! Am planning to start playing KOF for the first time as a long time tekken player. I have to say, I am sure this isnt representative of the storys quality itself but these videos make me think that this is my fav. main storyline of fighting games so far.
Thanks for these recaps! I'm old enough to be around since the first games (I own KOF 95 and 96 on original Saturn CD/Cartridge combos) and since it was the early internet days could never figure out what the hell was going on with the storylines as I only caught glimpses of the intro sequences in the arcades. The guys who were really good at the games always just skipped past the endings and I was sure as hell not skilled enough to to battle either them or the CPU lol.
I thought about it but K' gets over meeting Kyo super fast and then basically could not care less after the fact. Its neat in the moment of KoF 99 but it never matters ever again. So I made the call and just kinda moved past it
Part of me really likes how stupidly complex the NESTS saga is, with having a clone of a clone of Ling, or the many clones of Kyo, etc. All that aside, I thank this saga for introducing one of the KoF big boys I enjoy playing the most, Maxima!
Oh man this was great. Orochi and NESTS sagas were literally my childhood so it was great taking a trip back memory lane and learning more about them. That being said, this is where I stopped with KOF, so I'm rather curious about the whole Ash Crimson storyline as a returning KOF fan for XV. Really incredible work. You have a knack for storytelling, with an excellent sense of humour in regards to the more ridiculous plot points in KOF.
Great video! I finally learned the lore behind the NESTs saga thanks to you. Man, 2000 had some classy presentation. The way they flash the title logo on screen at the end of every team's story is so stylish, and that great intro with K' walking past everyone. So good. Looking forward to your summary of the Ash saga next! Good luck!
Also technically there’s some mention of the Ron subplot in 2003 (I think, but it might’ve been 11), and that’s pretty much it. Which is a shame because I think he and Lin are really cool characters that deserve to come back into KOF.
You are the best Roof. I grew up playing fighting games before the time of influencers and the like. You and some others really have transformed the community and how it grows. Thank you for your dedication to moving us forward. I and many others appreciate it beyond measure 👌👍✌
I was about to post of what happened to the recap videos and then this showed up in my recommended list. Great recap as the previous, my second favorite saga so far. it would be neat if the Ash Saga recap (the one I know the most but still missing some contect) on February 14th because that's Ash Crimson's Birthday... Also something about love and friendship IDK P.S: While evryone love to hate that Femboy, I just love him.
Considering that 2000 was the last KOF game made by the original SNK team before they went bankrupt, and '01 / '02 were made by a different developer, I'm curious how the current team feels about the NESTS saga. The characters introduced since then dont seem to be given much improtance since, and many of the remaining plot threads seem to be dropped (K9999 nonwithstanding). It's worth noting that while in the official KOF XIV manga, "A New Beginning", the NESTS cartel reveal themselves again (spoilers), the canonicity of the events are questionable at best. At the very least, I'm glad K9999 is back, even if I personally preferred Nameless more. Thanks for all your hard work here Rooflemonger, this must of been a pain to recap. Excited for the Ash saga!
I as crazy with twist and turns KoF lore has the NEST Saga is my personal favorite as while I like K and his story kind the whole route "The unlikelyest of people coming together" That being K', Maxima, Whip and Kula a small family if you will and I enjoy that.
Truly I could’ve made this king of fighters saga where Nameless comes into the picture and actually fight against K dash, K 9999, and Kyo. But however though, either Kyo or K dash does some talk no jutsu and convince Nameless to seize his nest actions. But nameless doesn’t buy Kyo’s talk there. But then this ignis dude when he decided to crash the satellite after losing the duel and realizes that he’s no god, he realizes that Ignis is a terrible leader and decides to take a suicide path and stops Ignis. While everyone else escape the falling satellite, only Nameless stayed. But the twist is, Nameless survives the crash and decides to reform Nests.
Now that's a statement! I can see your point, even though I don't agree with it. But that's like saying I prefer ribeye to sirloin, they're both incredible.
And i thought Guilty Gear had a convoluded story. I'm as confused as hyped for the next saga. And thumbs up for the ASS rating. While I was trying to focus and hold up the information that really caught me off-guard XD
As much as I love kof their biggest flaw is that they relegate 90% of the cast. Having these big plots should involve the hero team yes but then rather let the team character sub plots play out. In 96 make terrys team fight geeses team as a final fight and make it actually have a reason. If a team does not care about orochi then dont have them fight him in story mode. This way all characters can grow and have meaning
Ah yes my favourite saga the NESTS Saga I prefer it over the simple Orochi Saga and the Really complicated Ash Crimson Saga Tho you forgot to mention that Kyo and Iori where on the space station because they have the power of being Main characters XD
@@rooflemonger that's fair. I feel like the only interesting story tid bits in the verse saga come from the set team endings, and most of those are like side stories to snack on
Nice video on the NESTS Saga, dude! Personally, I'm kind of "mixed" on this saga because it definitely has some interesting new characters (both in lore and gameplay)...but the story is a bit of a mess to be honest lol It also kind of sucks that most of the characters introduced in the NESTS saga kind of got flanderized later on, specially Kula.
K' and kula are fighting over icecream now so yeah their importance certainly went down lol, whereas Kyo and crew managed to get relevant again in the ash saga. Them's the breaks though, not everyone can be the hero
He was the one I missed because his trailer dropped like right when Melty Blood type lumina dropped. I was in a situation where I had to pick and choose because I had limited time and a whole new game launch beats a trailer
it was gonna happen but the embargo of kof 15 getting moved up 3 days early ate up the days I was gonna make the video. It will still happen eventually, just gotta get out of the release window
That's because they join late and pick the winning side. Also it's because Canadians, in most provinces away from the main hubs, are amazing people, but the Canadian government is HOT GARBAGE.
i dont know much about KH but its the 2nd most coherent of the main stories despite how crazy it is. ash saga is just weird and "shunei saga" is a non starter
Max does his thing I do mine. The numbers say max is a lot better though cause he gets 10x the views on literally everything he does compared to me though lol
98 and 2002 are "dream games". They have no plot, they exist just to put in the biggest possible roster, including people who are dead(like vice and mature in 98) or otherwise wouldnt make sense

5:41 i think main impartation was Wolverine. His design, fact that he is canadian, metal on the inside and so on.
@20:45 I remember the first time I required fighting energy to fire my zero cannon
I SAW THAT at 36:06! LOLed hard there!
That dragon spirit stuff could lead to a new saga, after verse saga, has potential, has history
well verse saga basically isnt even one, other than dead people come to life literally nothing happens so you can do basically anything
@@rooflemonger that's fair. I feel like the only interesting story tid bits in the verse saga come from the set team endings, and most of those are like side stories to snack on
Heelllooo! Yep,I'm one of those Ash haters. The NESTS saga is the last KoF saga I played religiously. I was a Shingo main.
The story starts with all those Kyo clones yet Kyo is barely in it...
Maybe it's because I'm a fan of MVC and I only played a little of the games with strikers, but I kind of like them.
Im hoping they go and bring back a lot of the forgotten storylines with this current saga going on
Thanks Roofy
I swear early KOF dialogue was written by high school bullies or something.
Nice video on the NESTS Saga, dude!
Personally, I'm kind of "mixed" on this saga because it definitely has some interesting new characters (both in lore and gameplay)...but the story is a bit of a mess to be honest lol
It also kind of sucks that most of the characters introduced in the NESTS saga kind of got flanderized later on, specially Kula.
K' and kula are fighting over icecream now so yeah their importance certainly went down lol, whereas Kyo and crew managed to get relevant again in the ash saga. Them's the breaks though, not everyone can be the hero
If anyone ask, Nest Saga is the best Saga!
Great Nests Saga covering. Did you do K' trailer breakdown? Because I am unable to find it.
He was the one I missed because his trailer dropped like right when Melty Blood type lumina dropped. I was in a situation where I had to pick and choose because I had limited time and a whole new game launch beats a trailer
Ron for NGBC2 and SvC2 Chaos
when would you do the next saga papa?? we would all agree we want to see it as well :)
it was gonna happen but the embargo of kof 15 getting moved up 3 days early ate up the days I was gonna make the video. It will still happen eventually, just gotta get out of the release window
Here's hoping for team Bernstein( rugal adelheid and rose) and team best ( igniz original zero and krizald)
I'm sorry Whip calls Krizalid a simp at 14:33 and I know it's not for the reasons of today but it's just funny to see.
What happened to 98?
It's a dream match game with no story.
@@mallow2902 oh ok thanks, makes sense but it was kinda weird how the video made it look like it didn't exist😂
That is a lot
You know what I’m here to say rooflemonger!!!!
40 mins shit yea!!
RYUJI YAMAZAKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this LGR's 2nd channel? they sound the same lol
Remember when fighting game plots were just about dudes beating each other up? Well that was never the case, they were always goofy
in kof 99 cd drama aka the canon story
krizalid was beating the shit out of team hero but kyo shows up JUST IN TIME and beat his crap
5:08 Canadian armed forces? Sounds menacing. They never lost a war through entirety of their existence. 😮
That's because they join late and pick the winning side. Also it's because Canadians, in most provinces away from the main hubs, are amazing people, but the Canadian government is HOT GARBAGE.
Is the Nests saga the KH2 of KOF?
i dont know much about KH but its the 2nd most coherent of the main stories despite how crazy it is. ash saga is just weird and "shunei saga" is a non starter
@@rooflemonger KH2 has a lot of clones, memory manipulation and a secret organization similar to Nests with convoluted goals as well.
Why nests reminds me of organization 13 from kingdom hearts 2?!
Did Whip really call Krizzalid a simp?
Back in the day it had a much different meaning. Simp is/was short for Simpleton, aka a dummy. Not so much the modern version
Your way better than max. Your content is way more interesting and helpful. Doesn’t mean I don’t watch max lol
Max does his thing I do mine. The numbers say max is a lot better though cause he gets 10x the views on literally everything he does compared to me though lol
Hey when is Ash saga!?
Its been up for a good while now! Its linked at the end of this video in the patron section
What happens in 98? The best kof game
98 and 2002 are "dream games". They have no plot, they exist just to put in the biggest possible roster, including people who are dead(like vice and mature in 98) or otherwise wouldnt make sense
