    I own one of these and it works great! Everyone asks about it. The motor is plenty powerful enough to zoom past traditional cyclists uphill on the Manhattan Bridge. I purchased it second hand and replaced the battery since the LiPo one it came with only did about 15 miles.

      Great suggestion... this is a viewpoint I haven't gotten very frequently because it requires a second person and I prefer to go off on my own for reviews (even this one with Peter there was a bit different). I would have been able to comment on the systems more thoughtfully myself (read the written review for a better more critical look). Anyway, I'll try to get this in the future when time and location permit. Thanks again!

    $500-$600 every 2-3 years, on a battery alone!!!
    Not forgetting every 3 years you'll want to replace a lot of bike components including spongy brake cables, and maybe even worn our rims…
    Warranty on the motor is 1 year…
    You can get washing machines with a free 5 year warranty.

    • @ElectricBikeReview

      Alex Stedall It's a relatively new space in the US and many owners are seeing 2,000+ miles per battery (when cared for). If you ammortize even 1,000 cycles and include the price of electricity at ~$0.15 kwh then you're paying ~$0.60 per charge to go ~25 miles. It's one of the most efficient and affordable ways to get around, even compared with traditional bikes when you factor in the price of food, efficiency to digest and burn it and lost time.

      +ElectricBikeReview.com I've not heard anything about a Brompton produced ebike. It wouldn't be a bad idea though. At my local electric bike shop, where I got the Brompton warranty void information from, they've actually sold out of the emotor they use to convert the Brompton, as so many people have had their bikes converted. If Brompton don't start producing an e-version of their own, they'll be missing out!

    I find front hub motors suspicious because I always imagine that when you ride uphill with such a bike, almost your entire weight lies on the rearwheel and the front wheel looses its grip and starts spinning. Has anybody experience with that?

  • @Vectorebike
    @Vectorebike 10 років тому +1

    I like folding bikes, but I fund not really suitable it with electrical motor. The main things about folding bicycles is that they are light, and usually owners of folding bikes don't pedal too far, so no sense in electrical power..

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 років тому

      It's a trade off... given this bike only goes 18mph vs. 20mph and some other folding bikes only reach 15mph I can see how some people wonder why you'd even want a motor. It's also nice to keep these light so you can carry them up stairs onto trains etc. The biggest benefit I see for folding electrics is that they aren't always as easy or enjoyable to pedal due to the smaller frame. Sometimes if you're just trying to get from A to B having a little motor is nice. NYCeWheels did a great job on this conversion but this is really a tough segment given the points you've made.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  8 років тому

      +Make money with your Longboard To be honest, I have not dealt with tube changes or flat tires on the Brompton bicycles but if it is anything like a traditional bike you might need some tools to loosen the nuts on the axle then tire wrenches to get the tube out and back in as well as a pump of some kind. Changing any tube can be somewhat difficult, many people flip the bicycle upside down to do it if they don't have a bike stand. Hope this helps :)

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  9 років тому +1

      I realize it's a rare material that is mined in politically sensitive areas of the world and this drives price up however, I'm hoping that the economies of scale that Tesla and other EV manufacturers are bringing will balance that out and their research into light weight capacitors may pay off down the road.

    Leg power wins hands down and is still better for the environment - and better for you!
    Imagine all the e-bikes around the world hooked up to the grid, charging away, it's not really what you call green or Eco-friendly, and the amount of effort involved making these batteries and motors…
    Buy an extra banana in the morning and start moving your legs, you'll thank yourself when you're 70, walking around unhindered!

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  9 років тому +14

      Alex Stedall It sounds like you should switch back to a mechanical typewriter instead of using a computer then. It's better exercise for your hands and you can mail a piece of paper without wasting all of those batteries and electronics being produced in Foxconn by people who would just assume kill themselves (source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn_suicides)
      In my opinion ebikes are incredibly efficient, practical and environmentally friendly. You can recycle most of the components (including the battery) and they offer great utility over a human powered bicycle. You still get a cardiovascular workout but may be able to go further, reduce knee strain and avoid sweating (depending on your climate). They can substitute for cars and are compatible with public transportation.
      I absolutely love the light weight performance of human powered road bikes but do not commute with them. I also like bananas, and tend to skew vegetarian, but not everyone eats that way and the efficiency of our electrical grid (with increasing solar and wind input) compared to mass produced meats and grains shipped across the world, ingested and then burned by humans on site may not be such a big gap. It may actually be more efficient and sustainable to ride an ebike than a pedal powered bicycle when you do a full cradle to grave analysis of energy production. Each bike offers something unique and electric bikes certainly have a valuable place in our human ecosystem. I appreciate your deeper thought on this subject and hope my response challenges you to reconsider your bias.
